Abstract:Enhancing nonreciprocal light-matter interaction at sub-wavelength scales has attracted enormous attention due to high demand for compact optical isolators. Here, we propose a significant enhancement of the magneto-optical effect in low-biased gyromagnetic media via photonic doping. Magnetic particles immersed in a gyrotropy-near-zero medium act as dopants that largely modify the macroscopic gyromagnetic effects as well as the gyroelectric ones. Around the resonance frequency, the gyromagnetic activity is largely increased and even exceeds unity, thus providing a photonic band in which the wavenumber of one circularly polarized wave becomes purely imaginary. The sign of gyromagnetic activity flips at two chiral modes, and an equivalent switching of the external bias is revealed. A proof-ofconcept low-biased planar isolator is designed with a thickness of only 1/28 wavelength and a degree of isolation achieving as high as 0.94. This methodology is robust against disturbance of the biased magnetic field and can be flexibly extended to other frequencies, thus offering a promising platform to achieve giant optical isolation with infinitesimally intrinsic magneto-optical effects and reduced sizes. Abstract:The properties of optical vortex provide new insights into a wide range of optical and physical phenomena, giving rise to numerous applications in multiple disciplines. Notably, as much as the associated technologies have become increasingly flexible, it is still challenging to simultaneously generate multiple longitudinal polarization optical vortices with random topological charges (l) and tunable intensities at arbitrary positions. Herein, a novel approach that, by manipulating phase and amplitude at the back pupil of a high numerical-aperture (NA) objective, realizes arbitrary longitudinal polarization vortices within the tightly focused light field is developed. Building upon the same model, the impacts of polarization on the optical vortex field and its potential of tuning the ratio of the longitudinal polarization component are further investigated.

Abstract:Combining the vector diffraction theory with the inverse Faraday effect, we have theoretically studied magnetization shaping generated by tight focusing of an azimuthally polarized multi-Gaussian beam superimposed with a helical phase. By selecting optimized parameters of a multi-Gaussian beam and topological charge of a spiral phase plate, not only a super-long and sub-wavelength longitudinal magnetization needle with single/dual channels for a single-lens high numerical aperture focusing system, but also an extra-long and three-dimensional super-resolution longitudinal magnetization chain with single/dual channels for a 4π high numerical aperture focusing system is achieved in the focal region. Furthermore, by continuously changing the phase difference between two counter-propagating beams, these super-long longitudinal magnetization chains with three-dimensional super-resolution can dynamically move along the z-axis. It is expected that these results pave the path for fabricating magnetic lattices for spin wave operation, multiple atoms or magnetic particle trapping and transportation, confocal and magnetic resonance microscopy, as well as multilayer ultrahigh density magnetic storage.

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the magneto-optical rotation in cavity QED system with atomic Zeeman coherence, which is established via coherent population trapping. Owing to Zeeman coherence, the ultranarrow transmission spectrum less than 1 MHz with gain can be achieved with a flat-top Faraday rotation angle. By controlling the parameters appropriately, the input probe components within the flat-top regime rotate with almost the same angle, and transmit through the cavity perpendicularly to the other components outside the flat-top regime. The concepts discussed here provide an important tool for perfect ultranarrow Faraday optical filter and quantum information processing.

Abstract:Key advances in the generation and shaping of spatially structured photonic fields both in the near and far field render possible the control of the duration, the phase, and the polarization state of the field distributions. For instance, optical vortices having a structured phase are nowadays routinely generated and exploited for a range of applications. While the light-matter interaction with optical vortices is meanwhile well studied, the distinctive features of the interaction of quantum matter with vector beams, meaning fields with spatially inhomogeneous polarization states, are still to be explored in full detail, which is done here. We analyze the response of atomic and low dimensional quantum structures to irradiation with radially or azimuthally polarized cylindrical vector beams. Striking differences to vortex beams are found: Radially polarized vector beams drive radially breathing charge-density oscillations via electric-type quantum transitions. Azimuthally polarized vector beams do not affect the charge at all but trigger, via a magnetic vector potential a dynamic Aharonov-Bohm effect, meaning a vector-potential driven oscillating magnetic moment. In contrast to vortex beams, no unidirectional currents are generated. Atoms driven by a radially polarized vector beam exhibit angular momentum conserving quadrupole transitions tunable by a static magnetic field, while when excited with azimuthally polarized beam different final-state magnetic sublevels can be accessed.

Abstract:The phenomena of magneto-optical polarization rotation and circular magnetic dichroism are well known in the Faraday configuration. We present another effect, an odd magneto-optical linear dichroism, arising in nanostructures with polarization-dependent mode Q-factors. It reveals itself as the magneto-optical modulation of light intensity for the two opposite magnetization directions in the Faraday configuration. The effect was demonstrated on a magnetophotonic crystal with a cavity mode, the polarization-dependent Q-factor of which is due to oblique incidence. For a polarization angle of 60° (or 120°) and an angle of incidence around 60°, the magneto-optical intensity modulation maximizes and reaches 6%.

Vector optical fields with arbitrary amplitude and polarization distribution can be generated based on a spatial light modulator and a common path interferometer with the aid of a 4f system, and the polarization distribution in focal fields is numerically studied. When incident optical fields is centrosymmetric, the ellipticity of focal fields is the same as that of incident fields when the ellipticity keeps constant; however, if the ellipticity of incident optical fields is not constant, the ellipticity for focal fields is different from the input one. For the case that the intensity of incident fields is not centrosymmetric, the ellipticity of its focal fields is not same as input fields when its ellipticity keeps constant and orientation is inhomogeneous, and it is also the case for the condition that the ellipticity is not constant. These findings are the result of interferences of broken-symmetry input fields. Abstract:In this paper, the propagation dynamics of an odd-Pearcey Gauss beam (OPGB) in uniaxial crystals along the optical axis governed by the Pockels effect is analytically and numerically investigated. In this case, the left-hand circularly polarized OPGB gives rise to the right-hand vortex component possessing a topological charge of 2. Results show that the focusing intensity, the focusing distance, the focal point size, the efficiency of the power exchange between these two contributions and the conversion between spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbit angular momentum (OAM) can be controlled by choosing an appropriate external electric field. Furthermore, the right-hand vortex component can be utilized to trap the nanoparticles whose refractive index is lower than that of the surroundings. The energy flow and the angular momentum of the OPGB are also studied. Particularly, with increasing the ratio of the extraordinary index to the ordinary index in a uniaxial medium, both two contributions perform bifocusing behavior.

Abstract:An extension of the Maxwell-Faraday law of electromagnetic induction to optical frequencies requires spatially appropriate materials and optical beams to create resonances and excitations with curl. Here we employ cylindrical vector beams with azimuthal polarization to create electric fields that selectively drive magnetic responses in dielectric core-metal nanoparticle "satellite" nanostructures. These optical frequency magnetic resonances are induced in materials that do not possess spin or orbital angular momentum. Multipole expansion analysis of the scattered fields obtained from electrodynamics simulations show that the excitation with azimuthally polarized beams selectively enhances magnetic vs electric dipole resonances by nearly 100-fold in experiments. Multipolar resonances (e.g., quadrupole and octupole) are enhanced 5-fold by focused azimuthally versus linearly polarized beams. We also selectively excite electric multipolar resonances in the same identical nanostructures with radially polarized light. This work opens new opportunities for spectroscopic investigation and control of "dark modes", Fano resonances, and magnetic modes in nanomaterials and engineered metamaterials.
Dynamical Characteristics of Tightly Focused Vortex Beams with Different States of Polarization

Abstract:We report a comparative study of the dynamical characteristics, including the energy, momentum, and angular momentum (AM), of tightly focused vortex beams with different states of polarization. Following Richards and Wolf vectorial diffraction formalism, the electric and magnetic field components of focused vortex beams with linear, circular, radial, and azimuthal polarizations are derived. A general theory to characterize the energy, momentum, spin AM (SAM), and orbital AM (OAM) of tightly focused vortex beams is introduced. Numerical simulations are performed on vortex beams with different polarization states focused by a high NA lens into water. These analytical and numerical studies show that the distributions of field, phase, and dynamical quantities depend on the sign and value of the topological charge carried by the focusing vortex beam, and are strongly affected by the states of polarization. For the vortex beams that do not carry SAM, the change of the sign of the topological charge has no effect on the transverse SAM and OAM, but leads to a reversal of the longitudinal SAM and OAM. For circularly polarized vortex beams, which do carry SAM, the change of the sign of the topological charge has no effect on the longitudinal SAM and transverse OAM, but leads to a redistribution of the transverse SAM and longitudinal OAM. Our results will be useful in revealing the mechanism of spin-orbit interaction within the tightly focused beams and providing new insights into the dynamical properties of focused vortex beams that may be important in applications including optical trapping and micro-manipulation.

Abstract:The magneto-optical polarization rotation effect has prolific applications in various research areas spanning the scientific spectrum including space and interstellar research, nano-technology and material science, biomedical imaging, and sub-atomic particle research. In nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (NMOR), the intensity of a linearly-polarized probe field affects the rotation of its own polarization plane while propagating in a magnetized medium. However, typical NMOR signals of conventional single-beam $\Lambda-$scheme atomic magnetometers are peculiarly small, requiring sophisticated magnetic shielding under complex operational conditions. Here, we show the presence of an energy-symmetry blockade that undermines the NMOR effect in conventional single-beam $\Lambda-$scheme atomic magnetometers. We further demonstrate, both experimentally and theoretically, an inelastic wave-mixing technique that breaks this NMOR blockade, resulting in more than five orders of magnitude ($>$300,000-fold) NMOR optical signal power spectral density enhancement never before seen with conventional single-beam $\Lambda-$scheme atomic magnetometers. This new technique, demonstrated with substantially reduced light intensities, may lead to many applications, especially in the field of bio-magnetism and high-resolution low-field magnetic imaging.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the focusing properties of linearly polarized Lorenz–Gaussian vortex beams modulated with power order space-variant (POSV) phase, which is based on vector diffraction theory. The results show that the shape of focal spot can be adjusted by changing the POSV parameter . In addition, the adjustable phase parameter can flexibly control the position of the focus on the -axis. Immediately after that, it is revealed that with the increase of topological charge number , the focused pattern can be separated along direction. Even more interesting is the fact that the waist width is inversely proportional to the length of the bar focusing peak. Specifically, when the value of waist width is increased, the length of the strip-shaped focusing peak is continuously shortened. And the value of is inversely proportional to the size of the circular spot. A range of focal properties were acquired through the introduction of a space-variant phase with a power order. These new properties hold potential applications within various fields, including particle manipulation, optical modulation, and particle confinement.

Abstract:The insensitivity of photons towards external magnetic fields forms one of the hardest barriers against efficient magneto-optical control, aiming at modulating the polarization state of light. However, there is even scarcer evidence of magneto-optical effects that can spatially modulate light. Here, we demonstrate the latter by exploiting strongly coupled states of semimagnetic matter and light in planar semiconductor microcavities. We nonresonantly excite two spatially adjacent exciton-polariton condensates which, through inherent ballistic near field coupling mechanism, spontaneously synchronise into a dissipative quantum fluidic supermode of definite parity. Applying a magnetic field along the optical axis, we continuously adjust the light-matter composition of the condensate exciton-polaritons, inducing a supermode switch into a higher order mode of opposite parity. Our findings set the ground towards magnetic spatial modulation of nonlinear light.

Abstract:Using the Richards-Wolf formalism, we obtain general expressions for all components of the electric and magnetic strength vectors near the sharp focus of an optical vortex with the topological charge m and nth-order azimuthal polarization. From these equations, simple consequences are derived for different values of m and n. If m=n>1, there is a non-zero intensity on the optical axis, like the one observed when focusing a vortex-free circularly polarized light field. If n=m+2, there is a reverse flux of light energy near the optical axis in the focal plane. The derived expressions can be used both for simulating the sharp focusing of optical fields with the double singularity (phase and polarization) and for a theoretical analysis of focal distributions of the intensity and the Poynting vector, allowing one to reveal the presence of rotational symmetry or the on-axis reverse energy flux, as well as the focal spot shape (a circle or a doughnut).
