Abstract:In this paper, we give a survey of the index iteration theories developed for periodic solution orbits of Hamiltonian systems in treating various problems from 1950s up to now, including some recent developments, and some of their applications to periodic solution problems.

Abstract:We give a necessary and sufficient condition for strong stability of low dimensional Hamiltonian systems, in terms of the iterates of a closed orbit and the Conley-Zehnder index. Applications to Mathieu equation and stable harmonic oscillations for forced pendulum type equations are considered as applications of the main result.

Abstract:Heteroclinic orbits for one-parameter families of nonautonomous vectorfields appear in a very natural way in many physical applications. Inspired by some recent bifurcation results for homoclinic trajectories of nonautonomous vectorfield, we define a new $\mathbf Z_2$-index and we construct a index theory for heteroclinic orbits of nonautonomous vectorfield. We prove an index theorem, by showing that, under some standard transversality assumptions, the $\mathbf Z_2$-index is equal to the parity, a homotopy invariant for paths of Fredholm operators of index 0. As a direct consequence of the index theory developed in this paper, we get a new bifurcation result for heteroclinic orbits.

Abstract:In this paper we study the following nonperiodic second order Hamiltonian system−u¨(t)+L(t)u(t)=∇uR(t,u),∀t∈R, where L(t) may not be uniformly positive definite for all t∈R, and R(t,u) is asymptotically quadratic in u as |u|→∞. By applying a generalized linking theorem in Bartsch and Ding (2006) [8], we obtain the existence and multiplicity of homoclinic orbits for the above system.

Abstract:In this paper, we define mean index for non-periodic orbits in Hamiltonian systems and study its properties. In general, the mean index is an interval in R which is uniformly continuous on the systems. We show that the index interval is a point for a quasi-periodic orbit. The mean index can be considered as a generalization of rotation number which defined by Johnson and Moser in the study of almost periodic Schrodinger operators. Motivated by their works, we study the relation of Fredholm property of the linear operator and the mean index at the end of the paper.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a new index theory, S n index theory, which is an improvement of the S 1 index theory given by Benci in [1]. Also S 1 index theory is a powerful tool in the study of the multiplicity of periodic orbits of autonomous differential equations, the definition of index confined the functional space being composed by functions whose mean values must zero. Under the condition that the functional Φ is even, our new index theory can be applied to study the multiplicity of periodic orbits in Hilbert space of functions without the restriction of mean value zero. After the shift of the origin it can be applied to the multiplicity of periodic orbits with a nonzero mean value. Besides, we give in this paper a delay differential system as a complete example to show the calculation of the multiplicity of periodic orbits.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to extend the results associated with periodic orbits from two-dimensions to higher-dimensions. Because of the one-to-one correspondence between solutions for the monotone recurrence relation and orbits for the induced high-dimensional cylinder twist map, we consider the system of solutions for monotone recurrence relations instead. By introducing intersections of type ( k , l ), we propose the definition of generalized Birkhoff solutions, generalizing the concept of Birkhoff solutions. We show that if there is a ( p , q )-periodic solution which is not a generalized Birkhoff solution, then the system has positive topological entropy and the Farey interval of p / q is contained in the rotation set.

Abstract:Characterizing existence or not of periodic orbit is a classical problem, and it has both theoretical importance and many real applications. Here, several new criterions on nonexistence of periodic orbits of the planar dynamical system are obtained and by examples shows that these criterions are applicable, but the known ones are invalid to them. Based on these criterions, we further characterize the local topological structures of its equilibrium, which also show that one of the classical results by Andreev (Am Math Soc Transl 8:183–207, 1958) on local topological classification of the degenerate equilibrium is incomplete. Finally, as another application of these results, we classify the global phase portraits of a planar differential system, which comes from the third question in the list of the 33 questions posed by A. Gasull and also from a mechanical oscillator under suitable restriction to its parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, we first establish the Bott-type iteration formulas and some abstract precise iteration formulas of the Maslov-type index theory associated with a Lagrangian subspace for symplectic paths. As an application, we prove that there exist at least $[\frac{n}{2}]+1$ geometrically distinct brake orbits on every $C^2$ compact convex symmetric hypersurface $\Sigma$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ satisfying the reversible condition $N\Sigma=\Sigma$, furthermore, if all brake orbits on this hypersurface are nondegenerate, then there are at least $n$ geometrically distinct brake orbits on it. As a consequence, we show that there exist at least $[\frac{n}{2}]+1$ geometrically distinct brake orbits in every bounded convex symmetric domain in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, furthermore, if all brake orbits in this domain are nondegenerate, then there are at least $n$ geometrically distinct brake orbits in it. In the symmetric case, we give a positive answer to the Seifert conjecture of 1948 under a generic condition.

Abstract:There are well-known analogs of the prime number theorem and Mertens' theorem for dynamical systems with hyperbolic behaviour. Here we consider the same question for the simplest non-hyperbolic algebraic systems. The asymptotic behaviour of the orbit-counting function is governed by a rotation on an associated compact group, and in simple examples we exhibit uncountably many different asymptotic growth rates for the orbit-counting function. Mertens' Theorem also holds in this setting, with an explicit rational leading coefficient obtained from arithmetic properties of the non-hyperbolic eigendirections.

And then with the help of this index theory we will discuss existence and multiplicity of solutions for asymptotically linear operator equations by making use of the dual variational methods and Morse theory. Finally, some interesting examples concerning second order Hamiltonian systems, first order Hamiltonian systems and elliptical partial differential equations will be presented to illustrate our results.

Abstract:A variety of local index formulas is constructed for quantum Hamiltonians with periodic boundary conditions. All dimensions of physical space as well as many symmetry constraints are covered, notably one-dimensional systems in Class DIII as well as two- and three-dimensional systems in Class AII. The constructions are based on several periodic variations of the spectral localizer and are rooted in the existence of underlying fuzzy tori. For these latter, a general invariant theory is developed.

Abstract:The dynamics of a chaotic system is full of chaotic orbits, especially for highe r levels where resonances are strong enough to destroy most periodic and/or quas iperiodic trajectories.Though the remnant periodic orbits are scarce,they are no t to be neglected because they form the invariant skeleton of the dynamical phas e space.For instance,we can quantize a nonintegrable system by its periodic orbi ts,which implies the important role of periodic orbits.Therefore,the locating of periodic orbits becomes one of the key points in the study of the dynamics of c haotic systems.Based on explicit examples,we list three methods for locating the periodic orbits in this paper,and conclude that the Newton method is the optima l choice.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove a new and general version of the Morse index theorem for heteroclinic, homoclinic and halfclinic solutions of general Lagrangian systems. In the last section we compute the Morse index of some heteroclinic and halfclinic solutions of some classical mechanical systems like the mathematical pendulum, the Nagumo equation and a competition-diffusion system in dimension 4.

Abstract:The Kepler-Heisenberg problem is that of determining the motion of a planet around a sun in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group. The sub-Riemannian Hamiltonian provides the kinetic energy, and the gravitational potential is given by the fundamental solution to the sub-Laplacian. This system is known to admit closed orbits, which all lie within a fundamental integrable subsystem. Here, we develop a computer program which finds these closed orbits using Monte Carlo optimization with a shooting method, and applying a recently developed symplectic integrator for nonseparable Hamiltonians. Our main result is the discovery of a family of flower-like periodic orbits with previously unknown symmetry types. We encode these symmetry types as rational numbers and provide evidence that these periodic orbits densely populate a one-dimensional set of initial conditions parametrized by the orbit's angular momentum. We provide links to all code developed.
