Abstract:We report a general route to optical sensing with waveguiding polymer single nanowires. Functionalized polymer single nanowires, drawn from solvated polymers, are evanescently coupled to nanoscale fiber tapers for optical launching and signal collection. Based on pronounced changes in waveguiding behavior of the nanowire when exposed to specimens, polymer single-nanowire optical sensors for humidity detection is demonstrated with high sensitivity and fast response.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-sensitivity relative humidity (RH) sensor taking advantage of single-band narrow plasmon resonance of a single Au nanorod coupled to a whispering gallery cavity mode of a polyacrylamide microfiber. From the resonance peak shift, the sensor could achieve a sensitivity up to 0.51 nm/% RH with a cavity size of about 2 μm. By coupling multiple Au nanorods along the microfiber axis, we demonstrate a position-dependent microfiber optical humidity sensor with a 1.5-mm spatial resolution, which can be potentially reduced to micrometer level, paving a way toward high-resolution distributed microfiber optical sensors.

Abstract:We report highly versatile nanosensors using polymer single nanowires. On the basis of the optical response of waveguiding polymer single nanowires when exposed to specimens, functionalized polymer nanowires are used for humidity sensing with a response time of 30 ms and for NO 2 and NH 3 detection down to subparts-per-million level. The compact and flexible sensing scheme shown here may be attractive for very fast detection in physical, chemical, and biological applications with high sensitivity and small footprint.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanorod metamaterials are often used as a high-performance optical sensing platform for the detection of biochemical and gas species. Here, we investigate the effect of environmental humidity on their optical response. Due to the high refractive index sensitivity, a significant change in the transmission is observed with ΔT/T reaching values of more than 5% when the relative humidity is changed from 11% to 75%. This is the result of the condensation of water molecules on a rough surface of the gold nanorods. This finding reveals the importance of protecting plasmonic nanostructures from relative humidity variations in many practical applications. By coating the nanorods with a monolayer of poly-L-histidine, the fractional change of transmission is doubled due to the hydrophilic property of the monolayer, which can be used for the development of high-sensitivity relative humidity and dew condensation sensors.

Abstract:We demonstrate microrings assembled with polyacrylamide (PAM) microfibers for high-sensitivity relative humidity (RH) sensing. When exposed to moisture, the PAM microfiber absorbs water molecules and inflates monotonically with the increasing humidity, resulting in evident spectral shifts of the resonance peaks of the microring. By measuring the spectral shifts, the microring shows sensitivity as high as 490 pm/%RH and a response time of about 120 ms, within a dynamic range from 5% to 71% RH. Abstract:In this paper, nanofibers composed of polyaniline, silicon-containing polyelectrolytes and PEO were deposited on interdigitated gold electrodes by electrospinning to construct a humidity nanosensor. The resistance of the nanosensor changed for three orders of magnitude in the humidity range of 22 -95% RH, indicating a high sensitivity. In addition, it showed good linearity (R2=0.966) on a semi-logarithmic scale, very small hysteresis (2% RH) and fast response time (t90%: 7s and 19s for adsorption and desorption, respectively). Moreover, the decoration of electrode with polyelectrolyte is proved to effectively improve the contact between the nanofibers and the gold electrode.

Abstract:A hybrid optical microcavity from rolled-up polymer/oxide/polymer nanomembranes presents its excellent capability for environmental relative humidity detection. When exposed to a moist surrounding, poly(acrylic acid)/poly(ethylenimine) polymers swell greatly due to the absorption of water molecules, which thus leads to an increased wall thickness of the tubular optical microcavity and therefore presents a profound wavelength redshift of its whispering-gallery mode resonance. These experiments fit well with the calculation based on the Mie-scattering theory. Theoretical calculation also demonstrates that the thin walls of our tubular microcavities contribute to a high detection sensitivity compared to other microcavities. Our work could lead to new designs and applications of optical microcavities.

Abstract:To enhance humidity sensitivity, a parallel Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI)-based Vernier scheme is theoretically and experimentally developed via the parallel and separated micro-cavities of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and hollow core fiber (HCF). Through Au-film assistance and fine attenuation adjustment, the matched light energy of micro-cavities is obtained and high-contrast envelope with ~11-fold improvement is demonstrated within the 200-nm range. Centering the $\sim 77~\mu \text{m}$ length Au-PVA micro-cavity, the comprehensive tests in terms of humidity are conducted. The experimental results show that, owing to the magnification of Vernier effect, ultra-sensitive humidity response of −9.14 nm/%RH is gained. And the crosstalk of temperature is constrained within −0.0843%RH/°C. In addition, 0.505 s dynamic time-response is verified through field tests of breathing. With the merits of stability, compact size, and ease of operation, our scheme is very practical and has potential in the applications of humidity-related biochemical sensing and medical health monitoring.

Abstract:Polyaniline (PANi) composite nanofibers were deposited on surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator with a central frequency of 433MHz to construct humidity sensors. Electrospun nanofibers of poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), poly(ethylene oxide), poly(vinylidene fluoride), poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and humidity response of corresponding SAW humidity sensors were investigated. The results indicated that PVB was suitable as a matrix to form nanofibers with PANi by electrospinning (ES). Electrospun PANi/PVB nanofibers exhibited a core–sheath structure as revealed by transmittance electron microscopy. Effects of ES collection time on humidity response of SAW sensor based on PANi/PVB nanofibers were examined at room temperature. The composite nanofiber sensor exhibited very high sensitivity of ∼75kHz/%RH from 20 to 90%RH, ultrafast response (1s and 2s for humidification and desiccation, respectively) and good sensing linearity. Furthermore, the sensor could detect humidity as low as 0.5%RH, suggesting its potentials for low humidity detection. Attempts were done to explain the attractive humidity sensing performance of the sensor by considering conductivity, hydrophilicity, viscoelasticity and morphology of the polymer composite nanofibers.

Abstract:The field of plasmonics has experienced a renaissance in recent years by providing a large variety of new physical effects and applications. Here, we demonstrate a light humidity sensor of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) by a symmetric metal film, which uses P polarised light of emergent He–Ne laser to stimulate SPR. Resonance angle change received by the spectrum detector can determine humidity via the relationship between humidity and effective refractive index. When the relatively short wavelengths are shown in the model, the evanescent wave penetration depth is shallow, resonance state is weak and energy loss is low. The opposite results are obtained, when the wavelength is long. Also, with increasing thickness, the resonance peak becomes acute, thereby indicating the improvement in detection accuracy. When the metal thickness of our model is 50 nm, the resonance peak of the reflection spectrum is narrower, accuracy is high and reflectivity is close to 0. By analysing the experimental results, the SPR resonance phenomenon is shown. The electromagnetic field energy is highly concentrated near the interface between the metal and SiO2, which appears highly localized. The resolution of the structure can reach 0.37% RH (relative humidity), which is significantly more than the resolution of capacitive humidity sensor, i.e., resolution is usually 1% RH to 2% RH. The optical sensor of our development can provide a key device for long-distance transmission sensing, in special conditions such as low temperature.

Abstract:Humidity sensors by exploiting transition metal dichalcogenides have attracted enormous attention in various applications. Here, we demonstrate a high-sensitivity fiber-optic humidity sensor based on microfibers overlaid with niobium disulfide (NbS<sub>2</sub>). Our experimental results show that this type of humidity sensor has high sensitivity, and good repeatability and reversibility. In the RH range of 72–97%, a sensitivity of up to 1.05 dB/RH% and an excellent linearity correlation of 99.5% were achieved. The transmission spectrum of the humidity sensor indicates that this sensor has a wide wavelength detection range from 1530 to 1565 nm. We applied the sensor to monitor human breath with a fast response. We anticipate that the humidity sensor will be useful for the environmental monitoring, food production, and semiconductor industries.

Abstract:In this article, a new optical fiber humidity sensor based on the iridescent chiral-oriented cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)/polyethylene oxide (PEO) (referred as CP) nanocomposite films was proposed. The CP composites were prepared by evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA), and the material characteristics of the composites were performed by fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), polarizing optical microscope (POM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV-vis). The CP films exhibited uniform structural color of the nematic liquid crystal regulated by the content of PEO. Then, CP composite as humidity sensing material was deposited on the sensing fiber. Based on the Mach–Zehnder structure, the as-fabricated optical fiber humidity sensor produced an interference peak intensity movement associated with the change of refractive index (RI) and thickness of sensitive material. The structure and principle of the fiber sensor were described in detail, and the humidity sensing performances, including humidity sensitivity, response time, and stability, were comprehensively studied and the humidity sensing mechanism was discussed. An ultrahigh sensitivity of 0.64 dB% RH in the range of 30%–85% RH can be obtained, which is superior to other optical fiber humidity sensor. Additionally, the sensor has the advantages of fast response and recovery, good stability, and easy to fabricate and has potential applications in the field of remote online humidity monitoring.

Abstract:In this work, a low-humidity sensor based on Au-HKUST-1 was proposed by the method of post-synthesis modification. The hydrophilicity and conductivity of the sensing film were improved by the catalysis of Au nanoparticles (Au NPs). The Au-HKUST-1 sensor performs high sensitivity in low-humidity environments, with a response value of 30.4 within the 10%–16% relative humidity (RH) range (1 kHz). Meanwhile, the sensor exhibits short response/recovery time (29/39 s) and high resolution (1% RH), as well as good repeatability. Furthermore, the sensing film could be used for humidity monitoring by colorimetric.

Abstract:Humidity sensors have attracted intense interest in various fields because of the importance of humidity detection. Different methods have been adopted to enhance sensing performances of humidity sensors, while it is challenging for researchers to avoid the invalidation of the sensors after being wet. Here, we, for the first time, introduce self-assembly MoS2/Cu(OH)2 nanowires fabricated by liquid self-spreading-coating-evaporating as sensing materials and present MoS2/Cu(OH)2 nanowire-based quartz crystal microbalance gamut humidity sensors with superior sensitivity and self-recovery ability. The sensors deliver a remarkable sensitivity (60.8 Hz/% RH) under a wide range (0-97% RH) with fast response (1.9 s)/recovery time (3.8 s) and upgrade self-recovery ability that can maintain their original performances even after being wet, frozen, and heated or immersed in water. The sensors are also employed to monitor water counting, dew alarming, and human breathing (within 4 s), further showing their ultrahigh sensitivity for water molecules. The underlying humidity-sensing mechanism is interpreted by density functional theory calculations and in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectra experiments adequately, revealing that the high sensing performances are attributed to abundant adsorption sites and physisorption of water molecules. Our work proposes a strategy for transferring materials to arbitrary nanostructures swiftly and demonstrates new perspectives for highly sensitive humidity detection as well as self-recovery ability.

Abstract:A Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) based on a polymer micro-rod on the end-face of fiber core was fabricated for humidity sensing. The whole fabrication process by using the simple and low-cost drawing-curing method takes less than one minute. The diameter and height of the polymer micro-rod are only 9.2 mu m and 11.3 mu m, respectively. Because of its ultra-compact structure, the rise time and recover time of the sensor have been improved to 291 ms and 886 ms when the relative humidity of the environment changes between 61% and 76%. The proposed humidity sensor is expected to have important applications in bio-pharmaceutics, chemical industry, and environmental science, owing to its simple fabrication process, high sensitivity (659.67 pm/%RH), fast response and good stability.

Abstract:Highly aligned arrays of ZnO/TiO2 core/shell nanorods were fabricated on glass substrates by hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanorods cores followed by the deposition of anatase TiO2 shells in a sol-gel process. The characterization of these composite materials with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and transmission emission microscopy (TEM) points to the formation of crystalline ZnO nanorod cores that are coated with anatase TiO2 shells. Humidity sensors based on these core/shell nanorod arrays exhibit outstanding sensitivities with capacitances varying from 10(1) to 10(6) pF over a relative humidity (RH) range of 11%-95% at room temperature, which is 1.5 and 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of pristine TiO2 films and ZnO nanorods, respectively. Complex impedance analysis indicated that the enhanced humidity sensitivity is probably due to the high surface/volume ratio of this core/shell material in combination with the remarkable hydrophilicity of the TiO2 shell. Abstract:We demonstrate a simple and highly sensitive optical fiber relative humidity (RH) sensor based on a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite films. The resonance wavelength of the LPFG is sensitive to environmental humidity due to the change in effective refractive index caused by the strong surface absorption and desorption of the porous PEG/PVA coatings. The sensor is sensitive in a wide range from 50% to 95% RH, with a highest sensitivity of 2.485 nm/%RH in the range 50–75% RH. The proposed RH sensor has the advantages of compact size, good reversibility, and stability, which makes it attractive for high-humidity environments.

Abstract:A flexible humidity sensor with high sensitivity and reliability is reported by introducing poly(triphenylamine) (PTPA)into poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) nanofibers (NFs) via electrospinning. Combined experiments and theoretical studies show that the addition of conductive PTPA enhances the dielectric constant and moisture adsorption, owing to the rough NF surfaces and PTPA–water interactions. The PVDF/PTPA NF film exhibits a wide sensing range (20–90 %RH), short response/recovery time (33/28 s), good recoverability and long-term stability (over 100 cycles), outperforming most reported polymer-based humidity sensors. This work opens up a new route for sensitive, flexible and reliable humidity sensors, promising towards flexible and wearable sensing applications.

Abstract:A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on a side-polished single mode fiber coated with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is demonstrated for relative humidity (RH) sensing. The SPR sensor exhibits a resonant dip in the transmission spectrum in ambient air after PVA film coating, and the resonant wavelength shifts to longer wavelengths as the thickness of the PVA film increases. When RH changes, the resonant dip of the sensor with different film-thicknesses exhibits interesting characteristics for optical spectrum evolution. For sensors with initial wavelengths between 550 nm and 750 nm, the resonant dip shifts to longer wavelengths with increasing RH. The averaged sensitivity increases firstly and then drops, and shows a maximal sensitivity of 1.01 nm/RH%. Once the initial wavelength of the SPR sensor exceeds 850 nm, an inflection point of the resonant wavelength shift can be observed with RH increasing, and the resonant dip shifts to shorter wavelengths for RH values exceeding this point, and sensitivity as high as −4.97 nm/RH% can be obtained in the experiment. The sensor is expected to have potential applications in highly sensitive and cost effective humidity sensing.
