Abstract:For an infinite penny graph, we study the finite-dimensional property for the space of harmonic functions, or ancient solutions of the heat equation, of polynomial growth. We prove the asymptotically sharp-dimensional estimate for the above spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we study discrete harmonic functions on infinite penny graphs. For an infinite penny graph with bounded facial degree, we prove that the volume doubling property and the Poincaré inequality hold, which yields the Harnack inequality for positive harmonic functions. Moreover, we prove that the space of polynomial growth harmonic functions, or ancient solutions of the heat equation, with bounded growth rate has finite dimensional property.

Abstract:In the present paper, we develop geometric analysis techniques on Cayley graphs of finitely generated abelian groups to study the polynomial growth harmonic functions. We provide a geometric analysis proof of the classical Heilbronn theorem (Heilbronn in Proc Camb Philos Soc 45:194–206, 1949 ) and the recent Nayar theorem (Nayar in Bull Pol Acad Sci Math 57:231–242, 2009 ) on polynomial growth harmonic functions on lattices ℤ ^n that does not use a representation formula for harmonic functions. In the abelian group case, by Yau’s gradient estimate, we actually give a simplified proof of a general polynomial growth harmonic function theorem of (Alexopoulos in Ann Probab 30:723–801, 2002 ). We calculate the precise dimension of the space of polynomial growth harmonic functions on finitely generated abelian groups by linear algebra, rather than by Floquet theory Kuchment and Pinchover (Trans Am Math Soc 359:5777–5815, 2007 ). While the Cayley graph not only depends on the abelian group, but also on the choice of a generating set, we find that this dimension depends only on the group itself. Moreover, we also calculate the dimension of solutions to higher order Laplace operators.

Abstract:We consider harmonic functions of polynomial growth of some order d on Cayley graphs of discrete groups of polynomial volume growth of order D w.r.t. the word metric and prove the optimal estimate for the dimension of the space of such harmonic functions. More precisely, the dimension of this space of harmonic functions is at most of order d^D-1 . As in the already known Riemannian case, this estimate is polynomial in the growth degree. More generally, our techniques also apply to graphs roughly isometric to Cayley graphs of groups of polynomial volume growth.

Abstract:We give an explicit description of polynomial growth solutions to some sub-elliptic operators of divergence form with [Formula: see text]-periodic coefficients on the Heisenberg group, where the periodicity has to be meant with respect to the Heisenberg geometry. We show that the polynomial growth solutions are necessarily polynomials with [Formula: see text]-periodic coefficients. We also prove the Liouville-type theorem for the Dirichlet problem to these sub-elliptic equations on an unbounded domain on the Heisenberg group, show that any bounded solution to the Dirichlet problem must be constant.

Abstract:We study harmonic functions on general weighted graphs which allow for a compatible intrinsic metric. We prove an L^p Liouville type theorem which is a quantitative integral L^p estimate of harmonic functions analogous to Karp's theorem for Riemannian manifolds. As corollaries we obtain Yau's L^p-Liouville type theorem on graphs, identify the domain of the generator of the semigroup on L^p and get a criterion for recurrence. As a side product, we show an analogue of Yau's L^p Caccioppoli inequality. Furthermore, we derive various Liouville type results for harmonic functions on graphs and harmonic maps from graphs into Hadamard spaces.

Abstract:We study ancient solutions of polynomial growth to both continuous-time and discretetime heat equations on graphs with unbounded Laplacians. We extend Colding and Minicozzi's theorem [12] on manifolds and the result [22] on graphs with normalized Laplacians to the setting of graphs with unbounded Laplacians: for a graph admitting an intrinsic metric, which has polynomial volume growth, the dimension of the space of ancient solutions of polynomial growth is bounded by the dimension of harmonic functions with the same growth up to some factor.

Abstract:In this paper, we are mainly concerned with $(\mathbb{G},\mu)$-harmonic functions that grow at most polynomially, where $\mathbb{G}$ is a finitely generated group with a probability measure $\mu$. In the initial part of the paper, we focus on Lipschitz harmonic functions and how they descend onto finite index subgroups. We discuss the relations between Lipschitz harmonic functions and harmonic functions of linear growth and conclude that for groups of polynomial growth, they coincide. In the latter part of the paper, we specialise to positive harmonic functions and give a characterisation for strong Liouville property in terms of the Green's function. We show that the existence of a non-constant positive harmonic function of polynomial growth guarantees that the group cannot have polynomial growth.

Abstract: In the previous paper (Math Ann 362:717-742, 2015), we proved that the space of $f$-harmonic functions with polynomial growth on complete non-compact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton $(M, g, f)$ is one-dimensional. In this paper, for a complete non-compact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton of bounded scalar curvature,we prove that the space of harmonic functions with fixed polynomial growth degree is finite dimensional. We also prove analogous results for ancient ($f$-)caloric functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study harmonic and caloric functions of polynomial growth on a complete non-compact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton. On one hand, when the scalar curvature satisfies at least quadratic decay, we prove that the space of harmonic functions with fixed polynomial growth degree is finite dimensional. We also prove analogous results for ancient caloric functions. On the other hand, without any curvature condition, we prove sharp finite dimensional estimates for the space of Schrödinger functions with fixed polynomial growth degree.
Discrete infinity Laplace equations on graphs and tug-of-war games

Abstract:We study the Dirichlet problem of the following discrete infinity Laplace equation on a subgraph with finite width $$\Delta_{\infty} u(x) = \inf_{y \sim x}u(y)+\sup_{y \sim x}u(y)-2u(x) = f(x).$$ We say that a subgraph has finite width if the distances from all vertices to the boundary are uniformly bounded. By Perron's method, we show the existence of bounded solutions. We also prove the uniqueness if $f$ is nonnegative by establishing a comparison result, and hence obtain the existence of game values for corresponding tug-of-war games introduced by Peres, Schramm, Sheffield, and Wilson (2009). As an application we show a strong Liouville property for infinity harmonic functions. By an argument of Arzela-Ascoli, we prove the convergence of solutions of $\varepsilon$-tug-of-war games as $\varepsilon$ tends to 0. Correspondingly, we obtain the existence of bounded solutions to normalized infinity Laplace equations on Euclidean domains with finite width.

Dynamics of $L^p$-Multiplier for $p\leq 2$ on Harmonic Manifolds of Purely Exponential Volume Growth

Abstract:We study the dynamics of $L^p$-multipliers on non-compact simply connected harmonic manifolds of purely exponential volume growth. These are linear operators on the $L^p$-spaces which behave nicely on radial functions under Fourier transformation. In the process we complement the results of Kingshook Biswas and Rudra P. Sarkar by showing that if they are acting nicely on smooth function with compact support under Fourier transform for $p\leq 2$ these can not be chaotic. Furthermore, we use this to study the behaviour of the heat semi-group, the resolvent and the convolution algebra arising from convolution with radial functions. In the process, we obtain a Young inequality for the convolution on non-compact simply connected harmonic manifolds, an extension of the Kunz-Stein and study the domain of holomorphicity of the Fourier transform.

Large-scale geometry of Borel graphs of polynomial growth

Abstract:We study graphs of polynomial growth from the perspective of asymptotic geometry and descriptive set theory. The starting point of our investigation is a theorem of Krauthgamer and Lee who showed that every connected graph of polynomial growth admits an injective contraction mapping to $(\mathbb Z^n, \|\cdot\|_\infty)$ for some $n\in\mathbb N$. We strengthen and generalize this result in a number of ways. In particular, answering a question of Papasoglu, we construct coarse embeddings from graphs of polynomial growth to $\mathbb Z^n$. Moreover, we only require $n$ to be linear in the asymptotic polynomial growth rate of the graph; this confirms a conjecture of Levin and Linial, London, and Rabinovich "in the asymptotic sense." (The exact form of the conjecture was refuted by Krauthgamer and Lee.) All our results are proved for Borel graphs, which allows us to settle a number of problems in descriptive combinatorics. Roughly, we prove that graphs generated by free Borel actions of $\mathbb Z^n$ are universal for the class of Borel graphs of polynomial growth. This provides a general method for extending results about $\mathbb Z^n$-actions to all Borel graphs of polynomial growth. For example, an immediate consequence of our main result is that all Borel graphs of polynomial growth are hyperfinite, which answers a well-known question in the area. As another illustration, we show that Borel graphs of polynomial growth support a certain combinatorial structure called toast. An important technical tool in our arguments is the notion of padded decomposition from computer science, which is closely related to the concept of asymptotic dimension due to Gromov. Along the way we find an alternative, probabilistic proof of a theorem of Papasoglu that graphs of asymptotic polynomial growth rate $\rho<\infty$ have asymptotic dimension at most $\rho$ and establish the same bound in the Borel setting.

Harmonic functions on finitely-connected tori

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a Logarithmic Conjugation Theorem on finitely-connected tori. The theorem states that a harmonic function can be written as the real part of a function whose derivative is analytic and a finite sum of terms involving the logarithm of the modulus of a modified Weierstrass sigma function. We implement the method using arbitrary precision and use the result to find approximate solutions to the Laplace problem and Steklov eigenvalue problem. Using a posteriori estimation, we show that the solution of the Laplace problem on a torus with a few circular holes has error less than $10^{-100}$ using a few hundred degrees of freedom and the Steklov eigenvalues have similar error.

Abstract:We unwind the induction implicit in the "one-step" asymptotic expansions of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1701.02417" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1701.02417">arXiv:1701.02417</a> to describe how to turn asymptotic expansions, such as (but not limited to) the Harish-Chandra--Howe local character expansion, for depth-(0) supercuspidal characters into Kim--Murnaghan-type asymptotic expansions for arbitrary positive-depth, tame, supercuspidal characters. Doing so requires analogous results for Fourier transforms of orbital integrals on the Lie algebra of a reductive group, which are of independent interest.

Abstract:By studying the heat semigroup, we prove Li-Yau type estimates for bounded and positive solutions of the heat equation on graphs, under the assumption of the curvature-dimension inequality CDE'(n,0), which can be consider as a notion of curvature for graphs. Furthermore, we derive that if a graph has non-negative curvature then it has the volume doubling property, from this we can prove the Gaussian estimate for heat kernel, and then Poincaré inequality and Harnack inequality. As a consequence, we obtain that the dimension of space of harmonic functions on graphs with polynomial growth is finite, which original is a conjecture of Yau on Riemannian manifold proved by Colding and Minicozzi. Under the assumption of positive curvature on graphs, we derive the Bonnet-Myers type theorem that the diameter of graphs is finite and bounded above in terms of the positive curvature by proving some Log Sobolev inequalities.

Abstract:We prove an analogue of Yau's Caccioppoli-type inequality for nonnegative subharmonic functions on graphs. We then obtain a Liouville theorem for harmonic or non-negative subharmonic functions of class Lq, 1<=q<∞, on any graph, and a quantitative version for q > 1. Also, we provide counterexamples for Liouville theorems for 0 < q < 1.
