Abstract:The heavy metal inventory and the ecological risk of the tidal flat sediments in Haizhou Bay were investigated. Results show that the average concentrations of heavy metals in the surface sediments exceeded the environment background values of Jiangsu Province coastal soil, suggesting that the surface sediments were mainly polluted by heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn). In addition, the profiles of heavy metals fluxes can reflect the socio-economic development of Lianyungang City, and heavy metals inputs were attributed to anthropogenic activities. Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were mainly present in the non-bioavailable residual form in surface sediments, whereas Cd and Mn were predominantly in the highly mobile acid soluble and reducible fractions. The ecological risk of the polluted sediments stemmed mainly from Cd and Pb. According to the Sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), however, the adverse biological effects caused by the heavy metals occasionally occurred in tidal flat.

Abstract:To understand the fate of colloidal or dissolved black carbon (DBC) in aquatic systems, a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) was applied to investigate deposition and release behaviors of DBC. The results suggested that DBC molecular composition and conformation were critical to the deposition processes on model surfaces, which were controlled by not only the classic Derjaguine-Landaue-Verweye-Overbeek (DLVO) interactions but also non-DLVO forces. The deposition rates of alumina, iron oxide and polyamide surfaces first increased due to the change of conformation and then decreased as the salt concentration increased. Correspondingly, the deposition layers first became more rigid and then got softer with the increase in the ionic strength. Both the pH values and calcium ion had distinctive effects on the deposition behaviors and viscoelastic properties due to their particular roles in DBC surface characteristic and molecular conformation. Overall, these results are meaningful to understand the environmental behaviors of DBC in aquatic systems.

Abstract:The presence of heavy metals alters the colloidal stability and deposition of nanoplastics (NPs) in urban waters. Such processes are important to assess the mobility and fate of NPs and their associated heavy metals. Up to date, few studies have reported the impact of heavy metals on the colloidal behaviors of NPs and the involved mechanisms. In the study, time-resolved dynamic light scattering (DLS) and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) methods were used to assess the aggregation and deposition kinetics of polystyrene nanospheres with divalent heavy metals. For comparison, carboxyl-modified polystyrene nanospheres were used. Results reveal that heavy metals destabilized NPs more significantly than calcium ions. Spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy analysis propose that heavy metals destabilized NPs via inner-sphere coordination with carboxyl groups and cation-π interactions, further leading to the formation of different dimensional aggregates. QCM-D results suggest that the deposition rate, irreversibility, and film compactness of NPs on silica surfaces first increased but further decreased as heavy metal concentration increased. Such deposition behaviors depended on the bridging effects between NPs and silica and aggregation-induced diffusion limitation. In that case, the destabilization and retention ability of heavy metals for NPs were related to their electronegativity and hydration shell thickness. In urban waters, the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) decreased the destabilization and retention ability of heavy metals, whereas heavy metals with environmentally relevant concentrations still enhanced the aggregation and deposition of NPs compared with other environmental cations. This study highlights the impact of heavy metal property on the colloidal behaviors of NPs, thus deepening our understanding of the mobility and fate of NPs associated with heavy metals in urban waters.

Abstract:The fluvial export of dissolved black carbon (DBC) is a major land-ocean flux in the global black carbon cycle, affecting the size of refractory carbon pool in the oceans. The aggregation behavior of DBC is a significant determinant of its transport and vertical mass flux. In this study, the aggregation kinetics and interaction energy of DBC leached from biochar were investigated. DBC was mainly stabilized by hydration force and underwent structural compacting in divalent cation solutions. Na+ and Mg2+ had limited impact on the colloidal stability of DBC due to the strong hydration of these cations. Ca2+ and Ba2+ readily destabilized DBC by forming inner-sphere complexes, reducing its hydrophilicity. Consistently, charge reversal of DBC was observed with high concentrations of Ca2+ and Ba2+. Simulated sunlight exposure led to photo-oxidation of DBC, increasing its colloidal stability. DBC behaved nonconservatively in laboratory mixing experiments using estuary water samples due to aggregation/sedimentation; while model aquatic humic acid behaved conservatively. Our results infer that there is a vertical mass flux of DBC and possible fractionation from the dissolved organic matter pool in the fluvial and estuarine systems, which have been overlooked in efforts to determine global carbon budgets and associated climate change implications.

Abstract:Heavy metal and organic pollutants in sediments along the coastal zone of southeastern China have been investigated. Sediment samples are retrieved from three depositional environments: coast, estuary, and tide-affected river mouth. The relative abundance of heavy metal and organic pollutants is related to their geochemical properties as well as depositional environments and anthropogenic discharge. Based on a sequential extraction method, it is revealed that anthropogenic Pb, Cr, Cu, and Cd are mainly bound to Fe–Mn oxides, suggesting that adsorption and co-precipitation of Fe–Mn oxides are in the control of their transfer processes from water column to sediment. Heavy metal bound to carbonates is also an important pool especially for Cd, Mn, and Pb. The main organic pollutants found in the study area include petroleum-related alkanes, phthalic acid ester, organic silicon, chlorophenol, phenyl ether, and amine. The accumulation of heavy metals and organics in surficial sediments has a decrease tendency from estuarine environment to coastal environment and to tide-affected river mouth.
Influence of Dissolved Black Carbon on the Aggregation and Deposition of Polystyrene Nanoplastics: Comparison with Dissolved Humic Acid

Abstract:Dissolved black carbon (DBC), widely found in soil and water environments is likely to affect the transport of nanoplastics in aquatic environments. The aggregation and deposition behaviors of fresh and aged polystyrene nanoplastics (PSs) with and without DBC in NaCl solution were investigated by time-resolved dynamic light scattering (DLS) and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring equipment (QCM-D) techniques. The results suggest that DBC can screen the surface charges of PSs by interacting with PSs through hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions and π-π interactions, although they were negatively charged. DBC promoted the aggregation of PSs under relatively low ionic strengths, and it minimally affected the stability of PSs under high ionic strength. Deposition experiments showed that both DBC in salt solution and DBC adsorption on silica surface facilitated the deposition of fresh PSs while HA inhibited both deposition processes. After aging, PSs were more stable, and the effects of DBC and HA were weakened. This study investigated the influence mechanism of DBC on the aggregation and deposition behaviors, which provides new insights into the stability and transport of PSs in complex aquatic environments.

Abstract:The research was conducted to study the distribution of heavy metals in water dispersible colloids from swine manure compost.Water extractible Cu,Zn,Fe,and Mn were found mostly in water dispersible colloids,whereas water extractible Ni,Cr,Cd,and As were observed as dissolved.Colloidal Cu largely accumulated in 0.02~0.2 μm colloids.Colloidal Zn,Fe and Mn were largely associated with 1~10 μm colloids.With high load for Cu,fine colloids(0.02~0.2 μm) may constitute an environmental problem in subsurface soil,for area receiving long-term applications of agricultural waste amendment.The higher metal/organic carbon(OC) ratio of colloids than that of dissolved fraction might result in the different distribution of water extractible heavy metals.The results demonstrated the importance of obtaining size fraction data when researching on the chemical behavior of heavy metals of swine manure compost in environment.

Abstract:The study investigated the distributions of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Pb) between dissolved fraction ( 0.7 μm) during the adsorption process. The dissolved fraction was further separated into truly dissolved (<3 kDa) and colloidal (3 kDa-0.7 μm) fractions. Significant metal adsorption occurred on the colloids, resulting in their aggregation into particles, which in turn influenced the particle adsorption kinetics. Colloids could either accelerate or inhibit the transformation of metal ions into particulates, depending on their stability. Competitive metals for colloids (Pb and Cr) were more susceptible to the effects of colloids than other elements. DOM was the predominant environmental factor influencing colloid behavior. The XDLVO theory showed that DOM enhanced the negative charge of colloids and made the colloid surface more hydrophilic, inhibiting the aggregation of colloids. DOM resulted in substantial increases in the concentrations of colloidal Pb and Cr from 0.31 μg/L and 4.58 μg/L to 20.52 μg/L and 43.51 μg/L, respectively, whereas the increment for less competitive metals (Cd and Mn) was smaller. These findings suggest that the distribution of heavy metals is influenced not only by adsorption from particles and ions but also by the complex dynamics of colloids.

Abstract:Many studies have shown the effect of solution chemistry on the environmental behavior of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs), except CuO NPs. Here, we investigated the agglomeration, sedimentation, dissolution, and speciation of CuO NPs by varying pH, ionic strength, ionic valence, and natural organic matter (NOM). The results showed that as the pH moved away from 6, the size of CuO agglomerates decreased, along with the enhanced NP suspension stabilization, due to the increase of electrostatic repulsive force. Increasing ionic strength and valence intensified the agglomeration and sedimentation of CuO NPs because of the compression of electrical double layers. The presence of humic acid and citric acid enhanced the dispersion and stabilization of CuO NP suspension, but l-cysteine showed a different impact. Decreasing pH, increasing ionic strength and all NOM improved the dissolution of CuO NPs, but the divalent electrolyte (CaCl2) inhibited the Cu2+ release from CuO NPs compared to the monovalent electrolyte (NaCl). In addition, X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis demonstrated that the presence of l-cysteine transformed more than 30% of CuO NPs to Cu(I)-cysteine by coordinating with thiol group. This study can give us an in-depth understanding on the environmental behavior and fate of CuO NPs in the aquatic environment.

Abstract:As a novel nanoscale carbonaceous materials,carbon nanotubes(CNTs)have attracted extensive interests. Due to their unique electronic,optical,thermal,and mechanical properties,CNTs have been an ideal materials for industrial application.The ever rising demand and the decreasing cost lead to increased release of CNTs into natural waters.Once exposed to water environment,owing to their large specific surface areas,CNTs will inevitably adsorb the coexsited organic contaminations.Due to their nanoscale,CNTs are easily penetrated into human body,thus becoming a latent threat to both the environment and human being.The bioavailability and the toxicity of CNTs largely depend on their particle size in aquatic environment.In other words,the dispersion stability of CNTs is a key factor in determining their transport and fate in aquatic environment.Therefore,studies on the aggregation and deposition behavior of CNTs is of great significance to predict their environmental effects on water bodies.In this review,the mechanisms for the aggregation and deposition behaviors of CNTs were elucidated by describing the in-teractions between CNT colloidals with the classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek(DLVO)theory and the non-DLVO forces.The aggregation and deposition kinetics of CNTs were probed with the aid of time-resolved dynamic light scattering,quartz crystal microbalance,and column filtration analysis.The effects of some influencing factors,such as the physiochemical properties of CNTs(diameter,length,the content of surface functional groups), ionic strength,solution pH,and natural organic matters,on the dispersion stability of CNTs were evaluated. Moreover,the main difficulties in the study of the aggregation and deposition behavior of CNTs were pointed out. The complexity of matters in natural water and the lack of suitable experimental approach aggravated the difficulties in the current investigation on CNTs.The possible development of experimental research on CNTs in the near future was put forward.

Abstract:Adsorptive fractionation of dissolved black carbon (DBC) on minerals is proven to alter its molecular composition, which will inevitably affect the environment fate of heavy metals. However, how molecular fractionation affects the interaction of DBC with heavy metals remain unclear. Herein, we observed that the selective adsorption of ferrihydrite caused molecular changes of DBC from high molecular weight/unsaturation/aromaticity to low molecular weight/saturation/aliphatics. This process accompanied by a retention of carbohydrate and a reduction of oxygen-rich functional groups (e.g., polyphenols and carboxyl) and long carbon chain in DBC. The residual DBC in aqueous phase demonstrated a weaker binding affinity to copper compared to the original DBC. This decrease in binding affinity was primarily attributed to the adsorption of polycyclic condensed aromatic compounds of 200–250 Da, oxygen-rich polycyclic condensed aromatic compounds of 250–300 Da, oxygen-rich non-polycyclic aromatic compounds of 300–450 Da, and non-polycyclic aromatic compounds of 450–700 Da in DBC by ferrihydrite. Additionally, the retention of carbohydrates and aliphatic compounds of 300–450 Da also made a significant contribution. Notably, carboxylic groups rather than phenolic groups were the dominant oxygen-containing functional groups responsible for this affinity reduction. This study has significant implications for understanding of the biogeochemical processes of DBC at soil-water interface and surface water, especially its role in the transportation of heavy metals.

Heavy Metal Induced Shifts in Microbial Community Composition and Interactions with Dissolved Organic Matter in Coastal Sediments

Abstract:Heavy metals can impact the structure and function of coastal sediment. The dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool plays an important role in determining both the heavy metal toxicity and microbial community composition in coastal sediments. However, how heavy metals affect the interactions between microbial communities and DOM remains unclear. Here, we investigated the influence of heavy metals on the microbial community structure (including bacteria and archaea) and DOM composition in surface sediments of Beibu Gulf, China. Our results revealed firstly that chromium, zinc, cadmium, and lead were the heavy metals contributing to pollution in our studied area. Furthermore, the DOM chemical composition was distinctly different in the contaminated area from the uncontaminated area, characterized by a higher average O/C ratio and increased prevalence of carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAM) and highly unsaturated compounds (HUC). This indicates that DOM in the contaminated area was more recalcitrant compared to the uncontaminated area. Except for differences in archaeal diversity between the two areas, there were no significant variations observed in the structure of archaea and bacteria, as well as the diversity of bacteria, across the two areas. Nevertheless, our co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the B2M28 and Euryarchaeota, dominating bacterial and archaeal groups in the contaminated area were strongly related to CRAM. The network analysis also unveiled correlations between active bacteria and elevated proportions of nitrogen-containing DOM molecules. In contrast, the archaea-DOM network exhibited strong associations with nitrogen- and sulfur-containing molecules. Collectively, these findings suggest that heavy metals indeed influence the interaction between microbial communities and DOM, potentially affecting the accumulation of recalcitrant compounds in coastal sediments.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution is a global problem affecting the environment and human health. Sediment is the source sink of heavy metals in water. Under certain circumstances, the migration of heavy metals will cause water pollution. Therefore, it is of great significance to study sediment composition and composite complexes in the migration and transformation of heavy metals. To understand the adsorption mechanisms of composite complexes and improve the theoretical understanding of adsorption in multi-component complex systems, this study explored the characteristics and rules of Cu adsorption to organic–inorganic, inorganic minerals, and iron-oxide–clay complexes in the estuary sediments of the Dianchi Lake. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were used for Cu adsorption experiments on three complexes to study their adsorption kinetics. X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy characterized the samples before and after adsorption. The relationship between adsorption capacity and sediment composition was analyzed through redundant analyses. The results showed that the Freundlich isothermal model was better than the Langmuir model in describing the adsorption behavior of the adsorbents. The contribution of iron and aluminum oxides to Cu adsorption was more than that of organic matter. The organic–inorganic complexes functional groups involved in copper adsorption are the most, which resulting in a higher adsorption capacity. The organic matter removal (organic degradation in sediment) will reduce the polar functional groups and reduce silicide activity, leading to heavy metal desorption and re-entry into the water body.

Abstract:Heavy metals are commonly adsorbed by biochar in contaminated water and soil. However, the behaviour and underlying mechanisms of heterogeneous precipitation between the inorganic components of biochar and cationic heavy metals remain poorly understood. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the nucleation, growth, and aggregation of precipitates, ion exchange-coupled precipitation behaviour, adsorption-precipitation correlation, and the influence of environmental factors (e.g., anion content, pH, initial concentration, type of heavy metals, and biochar size). The kinetic results indicated that the generation of precipitates was accompanied by an adsorption reaction with a gradual increase in crystal size and aggregation behaviour. Moreover, precipitation includes both surface and solution precipitation. The increasing local concentration of Pb(II) around the biochar at high initial concentrations increased the supersaturation of the nucleating substance, which decreased the potential for heterogeneous nucleation and facilitated heterogeneous precipitation. Correlation analysis revealed the presence of a coupling mechanism between precipitation and cation exchange. The enhanced electrostatic attraction at high pH could lower the heterogeneous nucleation potential barrier, thus promoting heterogeneous precipitation. The small biochar size extended the induction time, which was unfavourable for heterogeneous nucleation. This study provides a deeper understanding of the heterogeneous precipitation behaviour of the inorganic components of biochar and cationic heavy metals.

Abstract:Black carbon (BC) is believed to be an important adsorbent of organic pollutants. A complex suite of heavy metals and organic pollutants is commonly present in many situations. An issue that has received little direct attention is the effect of heavy metals on sorption of organic compounds to BC. We found that coadsorption of Cu2+ at an environmentally relevant, comparable concentration (50 mg L-1) decreases sorption of both the polar compound, 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP), and nonpolar compounds, 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCB) and naphthalene (NAP), by 30-60%, as measured bythe change in the distribution coefficient (Kd). This was attributed to surface complexation of CU2+ to form hydration shells of dense water that directly compete with organics for adsorption surface area. In contrast, coadsorption of Ag+ increases sorption of the organic solutes, which was accounted for by the decline in hydrophilicity of the local region around Ag+-complexed functionalities due to softness of the cation, leading to mitigated competitive sorption of water. Coadsorption of heavy metal ions to nonporous graphite, a model of the BC graphene (polycyclic aromatic) structure that has no 0-containing groups, however, only slightly inhibits organic adsorption due to the low affinities of metal ions to graphite surface. The results of the present study showed that the presence of coexisting heavy metals greatly affects sorption of organic pollutants on BC and thereby their fate and transport.
Characteristics and Depositional Fluxes of Heavy Metals in Aerosol of the Yangtze Estuary

Abstract:Atmospheric aerosol at the Qingcaosha Reservoir and Changxing Island,in the Yangtze Estuary,were collected,and its heavy metals measured.Concentrations of PM10were from 109to 197μg/m3.The elemental concentrations followed the order Zn Cr Mn Cu Ti Ni Pb V.Zn,Cr,Mn,Cu,Ni,and Pb were significantly enriched relative to crustal contributions.The average concentrations of Zn,Cr,Mn,Cu,Ni,and Pb were estimated to be 297,241,186,181,52,and 32ng/m3.Average daily dry-depositional fluxes to the Yangtze Estuary were estimated to be 0.14,0.09,0.08,0.08,0.02,and 0.02mg/(m2?d),respectively.Dry deposition accounted for about 25% of the Cu in the Qingcaosha Reservoir.
Dissolved black carbon induces fast photo-reduction of silver ions under simulated sunlight

Abstract:Silver has been associated with significant environmental challenges. This study aimed to investigate the photo-reduction of silver ions (Ag+) mediated by dissolved black carbon (DBC), a vital dissolved organic matter released from black carbon. Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) was used as a comparison group. DBC was observed to effectively mediate the photo-reduction of Ag+ to the silver nanoparticles (nAg) under simulated sunlight. The initial rate of formation of nAg mediated by DBC was approximately 3.0–9.5 times higher than that of nAg mediated by SRHA. The Ag+ concentration required to form nAg in the DBC solution was observed to be only 0.5 mg L−1, which was one-tenth of the concentration in the SRHA solution. Further, the mediation efficiency of DBC was higher than that of SRHA, which was attributed to the facilitated ligand-to-metal electron transfer and reduced generation of the oxidative phototransients. The Ag+ sorption played a crucial role during the photo-reduction process by altering the reaction pathway and local Ag+ concentration as well as affecting the initial rate of formation of nAg. Furthermore, the silver seeds generated by DBC are able to trigger the formation of nAg by SRHA at low Ag+ concentrations. Overall, the findings from this study highlight the vital role of DBC in mediating the sunlight-induced speciation of the silver ions.

Abstract:In order to probe into the accumulation of heavy metal in the biofilm,and the infection and contribution of the biofilm in the courses of water-sediments exchange,this paper studies the adsorption of mercury and other heavy metal in the biofilm and sediments,and compares the changes of mercury species after the adsorption in these two mediums.The result showed the species of mercury and other heavy metal in sediments are mainly the residual matter bound,while the percentage of carbonate bound,ion exchangeable bound and organic acids bound are little.The organic matter in the biofilm is much higher than this in the sediments.The growth time,illumination and temperature are important factors affecting the heavy metal′s content in the biofilm.It can be inferred that the stronger the illumination,the higher the temperature,the longer the growth time,and much more the content of the heavy metals in the biofilm.

Abstract:In recent years, the accumulation ability of heavy metals in sediment has become a key indicator for sediment pollution prevention and control. The adsorption-desorption processes of typical heavy metal pollutants in sediments under different conditions were explored and relied in this article. In addition, different binary competitive adsorption systems were designed to study the competitive adsorption properties of heavy metal contaminants, The quasi-secondary kinetic model simulated the adsorption kinetic process. The sediment adsorption rates for heavy metals were (in descending order) Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn. The Elovich equation simulated the desorption kinetics process better, and the sediment desorption rates for heavy metals were (in descending order) Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb. The average free adsorption energy E of heavy metals was within the range of 8–16 kJ∙mol −1 . After the removal of organic matter, the ability of the sediment to sequester heavy metals decreases, The binary competitive adsorption results showed that the presence of interfering ions had the greatest effect on Cd and the least effect on Pb. The adsorption and desorption of the four heavy metals by the sediments in the submerged zone increased with the increase of temperature, and the ratio of desorption to adsorption also increased therewith: the adsorptions of heavy metals by the sediments were all spontaneous processes (under heat absorption reactions). The presence of organic matter can increase the ability of the sediment to sequester Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn. Additionally, heavy metals exhibited significant selective adsorption properties.
