Abstract:Medical virtual simulation teaching environment is an advanced and complex combination of virtual simulation technology and medical technology training .As an advanced information technology , it has been attracting the attention of medical education researchers .Based on the characteristics of medical laboratory technology education , the virtual simulation experimental teaching center was established and a framework of the virtual simulation training environment was designed in the Department of Laboratory Medicine, Southern Medical University .Virtual simulation softwares and tool softwares were put into use widely in our experimental teaching .As it turns out, this simulated training environment has many merits such as risk-free safety , great efficiency , genuine learning experience and wide application potential , which partly overcomes the restriction of the teaching process brought by the condition of the practical operation and improves the teaching effect significantly .

Abstract:Virtual reality technology is a collection of simulation technology,computer graphics, human-computer interface technology and other technologies; it is a state-of-art cross-disciplinary technology.With the development of computer and network technology,virtual reality technology is broadly applied to many medical fields,particularly basic medical knowledge education and clinical skills training.Virtual reality displays excellent advantages in overcoming some restrictions of traditional medical education.It is beneficial for innovating educational conceptions,expanding education space, improving teaching quality and efficiency,and saving consumables,suggesting that it will greatly prompt the reform and development of medical education.Although virtual reality is still at its preliminary stage with a lot of disadvantages,it is expected to have broad application to medical education because of its unique superiority.

This paper briefly introduces application of VR from two aspects. The application in theoretical teaching is virtual anatomy and virtual human projects have been widely researched in various universities and institutions all over the world, which will give medical students a more realistic visual sense compared to the traditional teaching methods with 2-D diagrams. And VR surgical system plays an important role in clinical practice training, which provides surgeons a simulation environment with vivid visual, auditory, haptic senses, it will be an excellent substitute of cadaver because residents and interns can repeat all kinds of operations in the system without limits.

Abstract:In the medical field,virtual reality technology provides a new model for surgical training and surgical evaluation.At the same time,computer and digital technology is integrated more extensively into surgery and minimally invasive surgery(MIS) has led to a new era.It has been proven that virtual reality technology is an useful tool of surgical training for young doctors when surgery has entered into the minimally invasive surgery era.So more and more doctors and clinical engineering experts have reached the consensus on the development of virtual reality surgical simulation system.This paper discusses how to build the three-dimensional model and design a virtual surgery system.In the near future,the VR simulation can be applied in a real operative environment such as the rehearsal of operation procedures,real-time operation guidance and telesurgery.

Abstract:Virtual reality is a computer system which can create and experience the virtual world. People can operate, control and reach some special purposes in this system. This paper firstly introduces the concept and advantages of the virtual reality technology, and then explores the applications of virtual reality in medical instruction, including virtual observation instruction, virtual experiment instruction, virtual anatomy instruction and virtual operation instruction, to provide some references for the related researchers. Concept of Virtual Reality Technology Virtual reality is an advanced computer human interface, which is characterized by immersion, interaction and imagination. It integrates computer graphics, simulation technology, multimedia technology, artificial intelligence technology, computer network technology, parallel processing technology and sensor technology, visual, auditory, tactile and other sensory function simulation, can make people immersed in a computer generated virtual realm, and to carry out real-time interaction with the language, the gesture of natural way, create a multi-dimensional information space of a humanoid. Users can not only feel in the physical world objectively experienced fidelity through virtual reality system, and can break through space, time and other objective constraints, feel the real world cannot be experienced experience. We can simply understand the virtual reality system: using computer generated human computer interaction system that can give people a variety of sensory stimulation. It includes two aspects: the first is the computer generated virtual environment must be able to provide a variety of sensory stimulation of the senses, can let a person have the feeling of immersion, virtual reality at this stage usually consists of visual, auditory and tactile; the other is the virtual reality system is an advanced interactive system the human-computer interaction is the core of virtual reality. Abstract:The present review discusses the application of virtual reality (VR) technology in clinical medicine, especially in surgical training, pain management and therapeutic treatment of mental illness. We introduce the common types of VR simulators and their operational principles in aforementioned fields. The clinical effects are also discussed. In almost every study that dealt with VR simulators, researchers have arrived at the same conclusion that both doctors and patients could benefit from this novel technology. Moreover, advantages and disadvantages of the utilization of VR technology in each field were discussed, and the future research directions were proposed.

Abstract:Objective:This study aims to investigate the application of a virtual simulation teaching platform for the training anesthesiology residents in universities in China and to explore the factors that influence the quality of the virtual simulation teaching.Methods:Fifty-five anesthesiology teachers who participated in "the 16th Training Session of the Training Center for Medical (Anesthesiology) Teachers Teaching International Students in English Ministry of Education" from 39 universities in China were enrolled. A survey was administered as part of the virtual simulation curriculum. Due to the absence of individual teachers, 52 (94.5%) and 50 (90.9%) questionnaires were received before and after the courses, respectively. The content of the questionnaires included the general information of the teachers, the application of virtual simulation teaching method in anesthesiology teaching, the teachers' awareness of virtual simulation teaching, the willingness to teach virtual simulation courses before and after the virtual simulation training, and the ability of teachers to carry out virtual simulation teaching after the training.Results:Overall, 27 (51.9%) teachers reported that their universities applied a virtual simulation teaching method in anesthesiology teaching. Among the universities that used virtual simulation teaching, 20 (74.1%) teachers reported that their universities' training objects were residents. Thirty-five (67.3%) teachers knew about virtual simulation teaching. Forty (76.9%) teachers stated that they had not used the virtual simulation teaching in actual teaching. The present study also found that, after the training involving virtual simulation courses, the teachers' awareness of the importance of virtual simulation teaching was improved and their willingness to teach virtual simulation courses were increased. They had a more positive attitude toward the advantages of virtual simulation teaching while their ability to carry out virtual simulation teaching was promoted.Conclusions:Virtual simulation teaching platforms have not been widely applied in anesthesiology residents training. Moreover, the experience of anesthesiology faculties in using virtual simulation teaching methods needs to be further improved. Furthermore, virtual simulation training plays a key role in improving the competency of anesthesiology faculty. Thus, strengthening the training of virtual simulation among anesthesiology faculties, and adding virtual simulation courses and technical support may promote the popularization and homogenization of virtual simulation teaching platforms in the training of anesthesiology residents.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the application effect of virtual simulation teaching platform in the practical teaching of medical imaging. Methods: A total of 97 students majoring in medical imaging technology of class 2022 were selected and divided into two groups according to the random number method: control group (n = 48) and observation group (n = 49). The observation group was under the practical teaching mode based on the virtual simulation teaching platform, while the control group was under the traditional multimedia teaching mode. Questionnaire survey and teaching assessment were carried out after the teaching period, and the application effects of the two teaching modes were compared. Results: The reading and theoretical scores of the students in the observation group were significantly higher than those of the students in the control group (P < 0.01); there were statistically significant differences in the results of the questionnaire survey (improved learning interest, improved language expression, improved ability to comprehensively analyze problems, and improved teamwork awareness) between the two groups of students (P < 0.05); the students in the observation group were markedly more satisfied with the teaching content, teaching methods, and teaching quality than the students in the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The medical imaging practical teaching mode based on virtual simulation platform not only helps improve students’ theoretical understanding and practical ability in medical imaging technology, but also improves students’ learning interest, language expression ability, ability to comprehensively analyze problems, communication skills, teamwork awareness, and satisfaction with the teaching content, teaching methods, and teaching quality. Therefore, it has wide application value in medical specialty education.

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) is being applied to a wide range of medical areas, including medical education/training, surgery and diagnostics assistance. In the medical education field, VR opens new realms in the teaching of medicine and creates new effective learning procedures for the students. In contrast with the expensive immersive virtual reality learning environment (VRLE) such as CAVE, ImmersaDesk, virtual reality modeling language (VRML) technology provides a cheap and simple way to create such an environment and can be easily deployed in the classroom. In this paper, we describe some traditional application of VR in medical education and design a prototype of VRLE system based on VRML and visualization toolkit (VTK). The system architecture and module design are described in detail and some results are presented.

Abstract:Virtual simulation (VS) as an emerging interactive pedagogical strategy has been paid more and more attentions in the undergraduate medical education. Because of the fast development of modern computer simulation technologies, more and more advanced and emerging VS-based instructional practices are constantly increasing to promote medical education in diverse forms. In order to describe an overview of the current trends in VS-based medical teaching and learning, this scoping review presented a worldwide analysis of 92 recently published articles of VS in the undergraduate medical teaching and learning. The results indicated that 98% of included articles were from Europe, North America, and Asia, suggesting a possible inequity in digital medical education. Half (52%) studies reported the immersive virtual reality (VR) application. Evidence for educational effectiveness of VS in medical students’ knowledge or skills was sufficient as per Kirkpatrick’s model of outcome evaluation. Recently, VS has been widely integrated in surgical procedural training, emergency and pediatric emergency medicine training, teaching of basic medical sciences, medical radiation and imaging, puncture or catheterization training, interprofessional medical education, and other case-based learning experiences. Some challenges, such as accessibility of VS instructional resources, lack of infrastructure, “decoupling” users from reality, as well as how to increase students’ motivation and engagement, should be addressed.
