Analysis on fire-resisting performance-based design method and engineering instances for large-space structures in China

Abstract:Large-space structures, which are mostly used to be public constructions and industrial buildings, have been developing rapidly in China. However, traditional fire-resisting method in codes and regulations in China nowadays can not be applied to large-space structures as the structural systems thereof are sophisticated or sometimes there are special aesthetic demands on architectural employment. Nowadays, fire-resisting performance-based design method has already been the trend all over the world. In China, some constructions with higher importance grade, large space, and some ones which predictive codes could not meet their needs have already adopted this design method, and good effects have been achieved. This paper will primarily give summarizations of basic steps of this method applied in China. Then two successful engineering cases adopting performance-based design method have been introduced and discussed. Finally, analysis on deficiencies of this method was made and some suggestions were proposed for further development.
