Abstract:In this paper, we first develop the modified gradient‐based iterative (MGI) method for the complex conjugate and transpose matrix equations A1XB1+A2X ̅B2+A3XTB3+A4XHB4=E . By adopting the updated technique, we can make full use of the latest information to compute the next result, which leads to a faster convergence rate. In theory, we apply the real representation of a complex matrix and the vec‐operator to prove the convergence properties. Furthermore, we extend the MGI algorithm to solve the generalized complex conjugate and transpose matrix equations. Then, the necessary and sufficient conditions for convergence of the MGI algorithm are presented. Lastly, three numerical examples are introduced to testify the efficiency of our methods.

Abstract:We consider the convergence problem of an inexact Cayley transform method for solving inverse eigenvalue problems with multiple eigenvalues. Under the nonsingularity assumption of the relative generalized Jacobian matrix at the solution c * ?> , a convergence analysis covering both the distinct and multiple eigenvalues cases is provided and the superlinear convergence is proved. Moreover, numerical experiments are given in the last section and comparisons with the Cayley transform method are made.

Abstract:For a skew-symmetrizable cluster algebra ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$ with principal coefficients at $t_{0}$, we prove that each seed $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}_{t}$ of ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$ is uniquely determined by its $C$-matrix, which was proposed by Fomin and Zelevinsky (Compos. Math. 143 (2007), 112–164) as a conjecture. Our proof is based on the fact that the positivity of cluster variables and sign coherence of $c$-vectors hold for ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$, which was actually verified in Gross et al. (Canonical bases for cluster algebras, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 31(2) (2018), 497–608). Further discussion is provided in the sign-skew-symmetric case so as to obtain a weak version of the conjecture in this general case.

Abstract:Consider the nonlinear matrix equation X−A*X−2A=I, where A is an n×n complex matrix, I the identity matrix and A* the conjugate transpose of a matrix A. In this paper, it is proved that this matrix equation has a unique Hermitian positive definite solution provided ∥A∥2<1, and moreover, under the condition ∥A∥2<1, a perturbation bound for the Hermitian positive definite solution to this matrix equation is derived, and an explicit expression of the condition number for the Hermitian positive definite solution is obtained. The results are illustrated by using some numerical examples.

Abstract:The inexact Rayleigh quotient iteration (RQI) is used for computing the smallest eigenpair of a large Hermitian matrix. Under certain condition, the method was proved to converge quadratically in literature. However, it is shown in this paper that under the original given condition the inexact RQI may not quadratically converge to the desired eigenpair and even may misconverge to some other undesired eigenpair. A new condition, called the uniform positiveness condition, is given that can fix misconvergence problem and ensure the quadratic convergence of the inexact RQI. An alternative to the inexact RQI is the Jacobi-Davidson (JD) method without subspace acceleration. A new proof of its linear convergence is presented and a sharper bound is established in the paper. All the results are verified and analyzed by numerical experiments.

Abstract:Let $\mathbf{B}_n=\mathbf {S}_n(\mathbf {S}_n+\alpha_n\mathbf {T}_N)^{-1}$, where $\mathbf {S}_n$ and $\mathbf {T}_N$ are two independent sample covariance matrices with dimension $p$ and sample sizes $n$ and $N$, respectively. This is the so-called Beta matrix. In this paper, we focus on the limiting spectral distribution function and the central limit theorem of linear spectral statistics of $\mathbf {B}_n$. Especially, we do not require $\mathbf {S}_n$ or $\mathbf {T}_N$ to be invertible. Namely, we can deal with the case where $p>\max\{n,N\}$ and $p<n+N$. Therefore, our results cover many important applications which cannot be simply deduced from the corresponding results for multivariate $F$ matrices.

Abstract:Convergence is a crucial issue in iterative algorithms. Damping is commonly employed to ensure the convergence of iterative algorithms. The conventional ways of damping are scalar-wise, and either heuristic or empirical. Recently, an analytically optimized vector damping was proposed for memory message-passing (iterative) algorithms. As a result, it yields a special class of covariance matrices called L-banded matrices. In this paper, we show these matrices have broad algebraic properties arising from their L-banded structure. In particular, compact analytic expressions for the LDL decomposition, the Cholesky decomposition, the determinant after a column substitution, minors, and cofactors are derived. Furthermore, necessary and sufficient conditions for an L-banded matrix to be definite, a recurrence to obtain the characteristic polynomial, and some other properties are given. In addition, we give new derivations of the determinant and the inverse. (It's crucial to emphasize that some works have independently studied matrices with this special structure, named as L-matrices. Specifically, L-banded matrices are regarded as L-matrices with real and finite entries.)

Abstract:Let $A$ and $ B$ be $n\times n$ positive definite complex matrices, let $\sigma$ be a matrix mean, and let $f : [0,\infty)\to [0,\infty)$ be a differentiable convex function with $f(0)=0$. We prove that $$f^{\prime}(0)(A \sigma B)\leq \frac{f(m)}{m}(A\sigma B)\leq f(A)\sigma f(B)\leq \frac{f(M)}{M}(A\sigma B)\leq f^{\prime}(M)(A\sigma B),$$ where $m$ represents the smallest eigenvalues of $A$ and $B$ and $M$ represents the largest eigenvalues of $A$ and $B$. If $f$ is differentiable and concave, then the reverse inequalities hold. We use our result to improve some known subadditivity inequalities involving unitarily invariant norms under certain mild conditions. In particular, if $f(x)/x$ is increasing, then $$|||f(A)+f(B)|||\leq\frac{f(M)}{M} |||A+B|||\leq |||f(A+B)|||$$ holds for all $A$ and $B$ with $M\leq A+B$. Furthermore, we apply our results to explore some related inequalities. As an application, we present a generalization of Minkowski's determinant inequality.equality.

Abstract:In the image, the proposed algorithms are compared with the existing algorithms. It can be clearly seen from the image that CRAJGI algorithm and RRAJGI algorithm have faster convergence speed and higher convergence accuracy, which also shows the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and its superiority over other algorithms. This article consider a class of generalized coupled Sylvester‐transpose matrix equations which play an important role in control and systems theory. Based on the Jacobi iterative algorithm, the full‐row rank accelerated Jacobi gradient based iterative (RRAJGI) algorithm and the full‐column rank accelerated Jacobi gradient based iterative (CRAJGI) algorithm are proposed. By using the Frobenius norm of matrix and the trace function of matrix, the convergence of the algorithms are proved. The results show that the new algorithms are convergent for arbitrary initial matrices under the convergence number μ satisfies appropriate conditions. Numerical examples show that RRAJGI algorithm and CRAJGI algorithm have the advantages of faster convergence speed and higher convergence accuracy than other existing algorithms. Finally, an application example for robust and minimum norm observer design of linear systems is given.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the convergence theory of generalized Lanczos methods for solving the eigenproblems of large unsymmetric matrices. Bounds for the distances between normalized eigenvectors and the Krylov subspace. K-m(v(1), A) spandnned by v(1), Av(1),..., A(m-1)v(1) are established, and a priori theoretical error bounds for eigenelements are presented when matrices are defective. Using them we show that the methods will still favor the outer part eigenvalues and the associated eigenvectors of A usually though they may converge quite slowly in the case of A being defective. Meanwhile, we analyze the relationships between the speed of convergence and the spectrum of A. However, a detailed analysis exposes that the approximate eigenvectors, Ritz vectors, obtained by generalized Lanczos methods for any unsymmetric matrix cannot be guaranteed to converge in theory even if approximate eigenvalues, Ritz, values, do. Therefore, generalized Lanczos algorithms including Arnoldi's algorithm and IOMs with correction are provided with necessary theoretical background.

Abstract:Given an $r\times r$ complex matrix $T$, if $T=U|T|$ is the polar decomposition of $T$, then, the Aluthge transform is defined by $$ \Delta(T)= |T|^{1/2} U |T |^{1/2}. $$ Let $\Delta^{n}(T)$ denote the n-times iterated Aluthge transform of $T$, i.e. $\Delta^{0}(T)=T$ and $\Delta^{n}(T)=\Delta(\Delta^{n-1}(T))$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We prove that the sequence $\{\Delta^{n}(T)\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ converges for every $r\times r$ matrix $T$. This result was conjecturated by Jung, Ko and Pearcy in 2003. We also analyze the regularity of the limit function.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the global convergence of the complex Jacobi method for Hermitian matrices for a large class of generalized serial pivot strategies. For a given Hermitian matrix $A$ of order $n$ we find a constant $\gamma<1$ depending on $n$, such that $S(A')\leq\gamma{S(A)}$, where $A'$ is obtained from $A$ by applying one or more cycles of the Jacobi method and $S(\cdot)$ stands for the off-norm. Using the theory of complex Jacobi operators, the result is generalized so it can be used for proving convergence of more general Jacobi-type processes. In particular, we use it to prove the global convergence of Cholesky-Jacobi method for solving the positive definite generalized eigenvalue problem.

An easy construction of the solution X is given if it exists. These results lead to a proof of the fact that a nilpotent matrix is similar to a direct sum of Jordan blocks.

Abstract:Let H=A+UBU* where A and B are two N-by-N Hermitian matrices and U is a Haar-distributed random unitary matrix, and let \mu_H, \mu_A, and \mu_B be empirical measures of eigenvalues of matrices H, A, and B, respectively. Then, it is known (see, for example, Pastur-Vasilchuk, CMP, 2000, v.214, pp.249-286) that for large N, measure \mu_H is close to the free convolution of measures \mu_A and \mu_B, where the free convolution is a non-linear operation on probability measures. The large deviations of the cumulative distribution function of \mu_H from its expectation have been studied by Chatterjee in in JFA, 2007, v. 245, pp.379-389. In this paper we improve Chatterjee's concentration inequality and show that it holds with the rate which is quadratic in N. In addition, we prove a local law for eigenvalues of H, by showing that the normalized number of eigenvalues in an interval converges to the density of the free convolution of \mu_A and \mu_B provided that the interval has width (log N)^{-1/2}.

It is shown that a version of Gaussian elimination with one step of iterative refinement solves the system Ax =b, where b is nonnegative, with small entrywise relative error. In a wide range of situations, the normalized matrix product $P_n/{\Vert P_n\Vert}$ does not converge and we shall be rather interested in the asymptotic behavior of the normalized columns $P_nU_i/\Vert P_nU_i\Vert$, where $U_1,\dots,U_d$ are the canonical $d\times 1$ vectors. Abstract:In this work, doubly stochastic combined matrices are studied. The combined matrix is known as Relative Gain Array in control theory. In particular, the characterization of all matrices such that their combined matrix is doubly stochastic is studied for real matrices of order 3. In addition, we give necessary and sufficient conditions so that three positive real numbers are the diagonal entries of a doubly stochastic matrix.

Abstract:In many applications one needs to process massive data of high dimensionality. In order to make data compact and reduce computational complexity, dimensionality reduction algorithms are commonly used. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is one of the most used approaches, which leads to a matrix trace ratio problem, i.e., maximization of the trace ratio rho(V)= Tr(V(T)AV)/Tr((VBV)-B-T), where A and B are nxn real symmetric matrices with B positive definite, and V is an nxp column orthonormal matrix. In this paper, we consider a commonly used Iterative Trace Ratio (ITR) algorithm developed by Ngo et al., The trace ratio optimization problem, SIAM Review, 54 (3) (2012), pp. 545-569. In implementations, it is common to use the symmetric Lanczos method to compute the p eigenvectors of a certain large matrix corresponding to its p largest eigenvalues at each iteration, and the resulting algorithm is abbreviated as ITR L. We establish the global convergence and local quadratic convergence of the trace ratio itself. We then make two improvements over ITR L: (i) using the refined Lanczos method to compute the desired eigenvectors at each iteration and (ii) providing a better initial guess via solving a generalized eigenvalue problem of the matrix pair (A, B). The resulting algorithms are abbreviated as ITR RL and ITR GeigRL, respectively. Numerical experiments demonstrate that ITR RL and ITR GeigRL outperform ITR L substantially.
