We also apply these bounds to various nonnegative matrices associated with a graph, including the adjacency matrix, the signless Laplacian matrix, the distance matrix, the distance signless Laplacian matrix, and the reciprocal distance matrix.

Abstract:In this paper, we give the Gershgorin's theorem of the 2 × 2 unbounded block operator matrix with bounded off-diagonal entries, and use the spectrum and the numerical range of diagonal entries to investigatethe spectral inclusion properties of some unbounded block operator matrices. In particular, for unbounded block operator matrices with symmetric (anti-symmetric) corners, we give more exact localization of spectrum by the quadratic numerical range and the Gershgorin's theorem.

Abstract:Utilizing the concept of Perron complement, a new estimate for the spectral radius of a nonnegative irreducible matrix is presented. A new matrix is derived that preserves the spectral radius while its minimum row sum increases and its maximum row sum decreases. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.

Abstract:The spectral radius ρ(A) is the maximum absolute value of the eigenvalues of a matrix A. In this paper, we establish some relationship between the spectral radius of a symmetric matrix and its principal submatrices, i.e., if A is partitioned as a 2×2 block matrix A=(0A12A21A22), then ρ(A)2≤ρ22+θ⁎, where θ⁎ is the largest real root of the equation μ2=(x−ν)2(ρ22+x) and ρ2=ρ(A22), μ=ρ(A12A22A21), ν=ρ(A12A21). Furthermore, the results are used to obtain several upper bounds of the spectral radius of graphs, which strengthen or improve some known results.

Abstract:In this paper, we present several sharper upper bounds for the M-spectral radius and Z-spectral radius based on the eigenvalues of some unfolding matrices of nonnegative tensors. Meanwhile, we show that these bounds could be tight for some special tensors. For a general nonnegative tensor which can be transformed into a matrix, we prove the maximal singular value of this matrix is an upper bound of its Z-eigenvalues. Some examples are provided to show these proposed bounds greatly improve some existing ones.

Abstract:Bi-block symmetric tensors are extensions of elasticity tensors, whose positive definiteness plays an important role in the elasticity theory. In this paper, we establish bi-block $ M $-eigenvalue inclusion intervals of the bi-block symmetric tensors, which are sharper than some existing results. Based on the new sharp inclusion intervals, we give new definitions of bi-block (strictly) diagonally dominant tensor and bi-block symmetric $ B_0 $($ B $)-tensor, and show that both of them are bi-block positive (semi)definite tensors. Then we give some easily checkable sufficient conditions for judging bi-block positive (semi)definiteness of the bi-block symmetric tensor. At last, we give four numerical examples, whose bi-block positive (semi)definiteness can be determined by the new definitions but the existing ones.

Abstract:This article discusses the selection of the number of inner iterations of stationary block two-stage iterative methods for linear systems.It is shown that,for monotone matrices,the spectral radiusρ(T) of block Jacobi iteration matrix is the low bound of R_1-factor of the non-stationary block two-stage iterative methods.We apply a certain monotone norm to find out the decreasing upper bounds ofρ(T_p),these upper bounds converge toρ(T) with p for M- matrices.Consequently,when coefficient matrices are M-matrices we define the approximate optimal number of the inner iterations for stationary block two-stage iterative methods;the approximate optimum defined very tallies with the real optimum of the numerical instance for model problem.It is deduced from our analysis that small number of inner iterations should always be used in applications.

Abstract:We establish bounds on the spectral radii for a large class of sparse random matrices, which includes the adjacency matrices of inhomogeneous Erdős-Rényi graphs. Our error bounds are sharp for a large class of sparse random matrices. In particular, for the Erdős-Rényi graph $G(n,d/n)$, our results imply that the smallest and second-largest eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix converge to the edges of the support of the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution provided that $d \gg \log n$. Together with the companion paper [3], where we analyse the extreme eigenvalues in the complementary regime $d \ll \log n$, this establishes a crossover in the behaviour of the extreme eigenvalues around $d \sim \log n$. Our results also apply to non-Hermitian sparse random matrices, corresponding to adjacency matrices of directed graphs. The proof combines (i) a new inequality between the spectral radius of a matrix and the spectral radius of its nonbacktracking version together with (ii) a new application of the method of moments for nonbacktracking matrices.
