Abstract:Batch equilibrium adsorption and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) techniques were employed to investigate the interactions between Oxytetracycline (OTC) with four different colloidal fractions from a Brown soil. The adsorption isotherms of OTC on the examined soil colloids conformed to the Langmuir equation. The amount of OTC adsorbed followed the sequence of fine inorganic clay > coarse inorganic clay > fine organic clay > coarse organic clay, suggesting organic matter inhibited OTC adsorption on soil colloids. OTC adsorption on soil colloids decreased with the increase of NaCl and CaCl2 concentrations. The percent desorption by Tris buffer were in the order of coarse organic clay > fine organic clay > coarse inorganic clay > fine inorganic clay. The adsorption of OTC on soil colloids is an exothermic and entropy-driven reaction. The information obtained is of fundamental significance for the understanding of the ultimate fate of OTC in soil environments.
