Abstract:The intensive use of fertilizer has brought serious environmental pollution to China. Previous studies have a lot of debates on the driving forces of fertilizer overuse of Chinese farmers. Based on field survey data in four provinces of China, this paper empirically analyzed the magnitude of fertilizer overuse at farm level and examined the factors leading to fertilizer overuse in China. The results show that on average, Chinese farmers use 110.5 kg chemical fertilizer per mu(1) of land, and among them 46.9 kg fertilizer was overused, accounting 42.5% of total fertilizer use. Moreover, results of multivariate regression indicate that farmer's risk preference to avoid yield loss is one of the key factors that lead to farmers fertilizer overuse.
