Abstract:The hierarchical self-assembly (HSA) strategy widely utilized in biological systems has been applied in artificial systems to orchestrate small building blocks into complex functional architectures. The non-interfering interactions glue various building blocks together and produce new species with attractive properties. Herein, we functionalized NHC-based assemblies with orthogonal host-guest interaction to fabricate metal-carbene based supramolecular polymer gel. A series of unique crown ether-appended cylinder-like trinuclear AuI hexacarbene assemblies [Au3(L)2](PF6)3 (L=D1–D4, A1–A4) were synthesized from the corresponding trisimidazolium salts H3-L(PF6)3 (L=D1–D4, A1–A4) in which the N-wingtip of the imidazole moieties were substituted with three identical crown ether groups of different sizes (B15C5, B18C6, B21C7, DB24C8). The gold carbene assembly is able to complex six ammonium salts without disrupting the underlying metal-carbene cylinders. In addition, the supramolecular polymer metallogel featuring a multiple-responsiveness can be formed by using [Au3(A4)2](PF6)3 appended with DB24C8 as the core and bisammonium salt as the cross-linker. The case of introducing orthogonal interaction to NHC moiety by N-wingtip substitution demonstrates the feasibility and the power of such strategy to expand the NHC-based supramolecular system and endow them with novel properties.

Abstract:Replacing an oxygen atom with one of the boron atoms in a 5-membered B-Heterocyclic carbene and its Si and Ge congeners (BHEs; E=C, Si, Ge) creates Boron-Oxygen-Heterocyclic divalents (BOHEs) which may have potential uses as organometallic ligands. In addition to a survey on their singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE T-S ) for the stability concerns, the nature of the E–M bonds in XBOHE−MCl complexes (M= Cu I , Ag I , Au I ; E= C, Si, Ge; X= F, Cl, Br) is theoretically investigated using the natural bond orbital (NBO), energy decomposition analysis (EDA), and extended transition state natural orbital for chemical valence (ETS-NOCV) analysis. The outcomes show interesting stabilities of singlet/triplet configurations in carbenes, silylenes, and germylenes. Also, the results exhibit that the E–M bonds in the complexes have a higher electrostatic character.

Abstract:This work studied the bonding of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) with systematic modifications to their structures, including their wingtips, functional groups, back- bones, metal surfaces, and orientation. We apply two separate analysis methods: en- ergy decomposition analysis with natural orbitals for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) and intrinsic bonding orbitals (IBOs). We determined that the binding energy of these systems is described almost entirely by the orbital interaction energy as obtained by EDA-NOCV due to the dispersion being cancelled by the steric repulsion. We further explore the σ and π orbitals and how they change across systems. Finally, bis- complexes were explored via IBO, EDA-NOCV, and energy differences as compared to the monomeric versions. The two σ bonds connected the NHCs to the central Au atom are proposed to be 4-electron, 3-center bonds. We note that this is likely an accurate way to view bonds of monomeric NHCs on metal surfaces as well.

Abstract:In this study, we present a series of theoretically designed B2G14G14' molecules, featuring four-membered-ring heterocycles containing boron and heavy group 14 elements (G14 and G14' = Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb). Through the use of density functional theory (DFT), natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and electron localization function (ELF), our studies demonstrate a strong π single bond between the bridgehead G14 and G14' atoms, with minimal participation from a very weak G14–G14' σ bond. Additionally, the nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS), anisotropy of current-induced density (ACID), and adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) analyses definitively establish the presence of both σ-aromaticity and π-aromaticity in these inorganic four-membered heterocyclic neutral molecules.

Abstract:Carbocations represent one of the most active organic compounds. Many efforts have been paid in extending the chemistry of carbocations down the group to the heavier elements (Si, Ge, Sn and Pb). It has long been known that elements in a group share very similar properties, such as the coordination geometry and reactivity. The first results on heavier Group 14 element cations that appeared at the end of the past century corroborated this rule. However, a large number of novel heavier Group 14 element cations, many of which displayed very different coordination geometry and frontier orbital configurations compared to classical carbocations, have been synthesized in recent years utilizing specially designed ligands. As a result of the novel structure and frontier orbital configuration, some of the newly reported heavier Group 14 element cations have been used in catalysis, bond activation and small molecule activation. This review focused on the survey of synthesis, structure and reactivity of the recently reported heavier Group 14 element cations. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We have quantum chemically investigated the nature and stability of C–C and Si–Si bonds in R3A–AR3 (A = C, Si; R3 = H3, Me3, Me2Ph, MePh2, Ph3, t-Bu3) using density functional theory (DFT). Systematic increase of steric bulk of the substituents R has opposite effects on C–C and Si–Si bonds: the former becomes weaker whereas the latter becomes stronger. Only upon going further, from R = Ph to the bulkiest R = t-Bu, the R3Si–SiR3 bond begins to weaken. Our bonding analyses show how different behavior upon increasing the steric bulk of the substituents stems from the interplay of (Pauli) repulsive and (dispersion) attractive steric mechanisms. Extension of our analyses to other model systems shows that C–Si bonds display behavior that is in between that of C–C and Si–Si bonds. Further increasing the size of the group-14 atoms from C–C and Si–Si to Ge–Ge, Sn–Sn and Pb–Pb leads to a further decrease in the sensitivity of the bond strength with respect to the substituents' bulkiness. Our findings can be used as design principles for tuning A–A and A–A' bond strengths.

Abstract:The triply bonded heavier main-group compounds have a textbook trans-bent geometry, in contrast to a familiar linear form found for the lightest analogues. Strikingly, the unexpected linear group 13 E≡E triple bonds were herein found in the D4h-symmetry E2Li62+ clusters, and they possess a large barrier (>18.0 kcal/mol) towards the dissociation of Li+. The perfectly surrounded Li4 motifs and two linear coordinated Li atoms strongly suppress the increasing nonbonded electron density of heavier E atoms, making two degenerate π bonds and one multi-center σ bond in linear heavier main-group triple bonds. The surrounding Li6 motifs not only creates an effective electronic structure to form a linear E≡E triple bond, but the resulting electrostatic interactions account for the highly stable global E2Li62+ clusters.

Abstract:Designing and characterizing the compounds with exotic structures and bonding that seemingly contrast the traditional chemical rules are a never-ending goal. Although the silicon chemistry is dominated by the tetrahedral picture, many examples with the planar tetracoordinate-Si skeletons have been discovered, among which simple species usually contain the 17/18 valence electrons. In this work, we report hitherto the most extensive structural search for the pentaatomic ptSi with 14 valence electrons, that is, SiXnYmq (n+m=4; q=0, +/- 1, -2; X, Y=main group elements from H to Br). For 129 studied systems, 50 systems have the ptSi structure as the local minimum. Promisingly, nine systems, that is, Li3SiAsS2, HSiY3 (Y=Al/Ga), Ca3SiAl-, Mg4Si2-, C2LiSi, Si3Y2 (Y=Li/Na/K), each have the global minimum ptSi. The former six systems represent the first prediction. Interestingly, in HSiY3 (Y=Al/Ga), the H-atom is only bonded to the ptSi-center via a localized 2c-2e sigma bond. This sharply contradicts the known pentaatomic planar-centered systems, in which the ligands are actively involved in the ligand-ligand bonding besides being bonded to the planar center. Therefore, we proposed here that to generalize the 14e-ptSi, two strategies can be applied as (1) introducing the alkaline/alkaline-earth elements and (2) breaking the peripheral bonding. In light of the very limited global ptSi examples, the presently designed six systems with 14e are expected to enrich the exotic ptSi chemistry and welcome future laboratory confirmation. Electronic and geometric structure analysis of neutral and anionic alkali metal complexes of the CX series (X = O, S, Se, Te, Po): The case of M(CX) n = 1-4 (M = Li, Na) and their dimers

Abstract:Bonding mechanisms, potential energy curves, accurate structures, energetics, and electron affinities are obtained for all M(CX)1-3 species with M = Li, Na, and X = O, S, Se, Te, and Po, at the coupled-cluster level with triple-ζ quality basis sets. We discuss and rationalize the trends within different molecular groups. For example, we found larger binding energies for M = Li, for CX = CPo, and for the tri-coordinated (n = 3) complexes. All three facts are explained by the fact that the global minimum of the titled complexes originate from the first excited 2 P (2p1 for Li or 3p1 for Na) state of the metal, with each ligand forming a dative bond with the metal. All of the complexes, except Na(CO)3 , have stable anions, and their electron affinity increases as MCX < M(CX)3 < M(CX)2 . This sequence is attributed to the binding modes of these complexes. The Li(CO)3 and Li(CS)3 complexes are able to accommodate a fourth ligand, which is attached to the system electrostatically. Finally, two Li(CO)3 molecules can bind together covalently to make the ethane analog. The staggered conformer was found lower in energy and unlike ethane the CO ligands bend toward the neighboring Li(CO)3 moiety. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Among the new complexes, metal N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes have recently gained remarkable attention as they are entirely appropriate prerequisites for effective drug design and quick optimization. Furthermore, N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) like phosphines contain strong σ-donating properties, which can bind to metals and create stable complexes. This article reports a general theoretical discussion on the structures and nature of C (carbene/alkenyl) → M, P → M and C≡C bonds. Also, the influence of changing L and Rʹ groups in some adducts of [RʹC≡C → ML], (M=Cu (I), Ag (I), Au (I); R'=C 10 H 7 , C 9 NH 12 SO 2 ; L=NHC (R), P (R) 3 ; and R=F, Cl, Br, H, CH 3 , SiH 3 , Ph) has been studied. In this context, DFT calculations by PBE-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory have been used. The nature of C (carbene/alkenyl) → M bonds in [RʹC≡C → MNHCR] and also P → M and C (alkenyl) → M bonds in [RʹC≡C → MPR 3 ] complexes was surveyed. This was done using natural bond orbital (NBO), atoms in molecules (AIM), energy decomposition analysis (EDA), and energy decomposition analysis natural orbital for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV). The data have shown that σ donation from C (alkenyl) to M atom in [RʹC≡C → MPR 3 ] complexes was greater than corresponding [RʹC≡C → MNHCR] complexes. Also, the C (alkenyl) → M bonds in corresponding complexes were predominantly electrostatic. In addition, the C≡C bond has been also investigated by applying AIM, EDA, and ETS-NOCV analysis. The outcomes indicate that the highest percentage of interaction energy for C≡C bond is related to covalent interaction.

Abstract:A 14‐electron ternary anionic CBe2H5– cluster containing a planar tetracoordinate carbon (ptC) atom is designed herein. Remarkably, it can be stabilized by only two beryllium atoms with both π‐acceptor/σ‐donor properties and two hydrogen atoms, which means that the conversion from planar methane (transition state) to ptC species (global minimum) requires the substitution of only two hydrogen atoms. Moreover, two ligand H atoms exhibit alternate rotation, giving rise to interesting dynamic fluxionality in this cluster. The electronic structure analysis reveals the flexible bonding positions of ligand H atoms due to C‐H localized bonds, highlighting the rotational fluxionality in the cluster, and two CBe2 3c‐2e delocalized bonds endow its rare 2σ/2π double aromaticity. Unprecedentedly, the fluxional process exhibits a conversion in the type of bonding (σ bond ⇔ π bond), which is an uncommon fluxional mechanism. The cluster can be seen as an attempt to apply planar hypercoordinate carbon species to molecular motors.

Abstract:Since the dawn of organometallic chemistry, transition metal complexes of unsaturated organic molecules, namely π-complexes, have remained a central focus: our thorough understanding of the electronic nature of such species, and their importance in countless reactive processes continues to drive research in their synthesis and utilisation. Since the late 1900s, research regarding the related chemistry for the heavier group 14 elements has become increasingly more fervent. Today, heavier congeners of a vast array of classical π-complexes have been realised, from alkene to arene systems, involving Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb. This has given deeper insights into the bonding observed for these heavier elements, which typically involves a lessened degree of π-bonding and an increased polarisation. This review aims to summarise this field, identifying these disparities, and highlighting areas which we believe may be exciting for future exploration.

Insight into the Nature of Carbon-Metal Bonding of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes in Gold/Silver Complexes and Nanoparticles Using DFT-Correlated Raman Spectroscopy: Strong Evidence for π-Backbonding

Abstract:N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as promising ligands for stabilizing metallic complexes, nanoclusters, nanoparticles (NPs) and surfaces. The carbon-metal bond between NHCs and metal atoms plays a crucial role in determining the resulting material's stability, reactivity, function, and electronic properties. Using Raman spectroscopy coupled with density functional theory calculations, we investigate the nature of carbon-metal bonding in NHC-silver and NHC-gold complexes as well as their corresponding NPs. While low wavenumbers are inaccessible to standard infrared spectroscopy, Raman detection reveals previously unreported NHC-Au/Ag bond-stretching vibrations between 154-196 cm -1 . The computationally efficient r 2 SCAN-3c method allows an excellent correlation between experimental and predicted Raman spectra which helps calibrate an accurate description of NHC-metal bonding. While π-backbonding should stabilize the NHC-metal bond, conflicting reports for the presence and absence of π-backbonding are seen in the literature. This debate led us to further investigate experimental and theoretical results to ultimately confirm and quantify the presence of π-backbonding in these systems. Experimentally, an observed decrease in the NHC's C=N stretching due to the population of the π* orbital is a good indication for the presence of π-backbonding. Using Energy Decomposition Analysis - Natural Orbitals for Chemical Valence (EDA-NOCV), our calculations concur and quantify π-backbonding in these NHC-bound complexes and NPs. Surprisingly, we observe that NPs are less stabilized by π-backbonding compared to their respective complexes—a result that partially explains the weaker NHC-NP bond. The protocol described herein will help optimize metal-carbon bonding in NHC-stabilized metal complexes, nanoparticles and surfaces.

Tetracoordinate Planar Nonmetals

Abstract:Tetracoordinate planar carbon (that is, carbon atoms coordinated by four other atoms in a square-planar arrangement), first proposed by Hoffmann et al. over thirty years ago, was recently observed in the vibrationally averagedD4h [Al4C] , C2v Al3XC, [Al3XC] (X= Si,Ge), and [CAl4] 2 . Tetracoordinate planar (TP) Si and Ge centers were also discovered in MAl4 and [MAl4] . The TP bonding character of Group 14 elements, contrary to the conventional concept of tetrahedral C, Si, and Ge, is supported by excellent agreements between the measured photoelectron spectra and ab initio vertical detachment energies (VDE) of these molecules in the TP structures. Here we extend the range of TP centers to include B, N, and O and the ligands from p-block elements to d-block transition metals (Cu and Ni). On the basis of ab initio optimization results, we present the first theoretical evidence that, in the form of the X-centered hydrometals M4H4X, these first-row nonmetals X (X=B, C, N, O) are tetracoordinated by four transition-metal ligands M (M=Cu, Ni) in perfect squares. Hydrocopper Cu4H4 and hydronickel Ni4H4 are found to be suitable for hosting these tetracoordinate planar nonmetals (TPNs) with the high symmetry ofD4h. To the best of our knowledge, neither experimental nor theoretical data on these unusual molecules are available to date. Our work was stimulated by the proposal of aromatic hydrocopper Cu4H4 at the DFT level. [7]

Abstract:Dinickel dichalcogenide complexes hold vital multifaceted significance across catalysis, electron transfer, magnetism, materials science, and energy conversion. Understanding their structure, bonding, and reactivity is crucial for all aforementioned applications. These complexes are classified as dichalcogenide, subchalcogenide, or chalcogenide based on metal oxidation and coordinated chalcogen, and due to the associated complex electronic structure, ambiguity often lingers about their classification. In this work, using DFT, CASSCF/NEVPT2, and DLPNO-CCSD(T) methods, we have studied in detail [(NiL)2(E2)] (L = 1,4,7,10-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane; E = O, S, Se and Te) complexes and explored their reactivity towards C–H bond activation for the first time. Through a comprehensive analysis of the structure, bonding, and reactivity of a series of [(NiL)2(E2)] complexes with E = O, S, Se, and Te, our computational findings suggest that {Ni2O2} and {Ni2S2} are best categorised as dichalcogenide-type complexes. In contrast, {Ni2Se2} and {Ni2Te2} display tendencies consistent with the subchalcogenide classification, and this aligns with the earlier structural correlation proposed (Berry and co-workers, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2015, 137, 4993.) reports on the importance of the E-E bond strength. Our study suggests the reactivity order of {Ni2O2} > {Ni2S2} > {Ni2Se2} > {Ni2Te2} for C–H bond activation, and the origin of the difference in reactivity was attributed to the difference in the Ni–E bond covalency, and electronic cooperativity between two Ni centres that switch among the classification during the reaction. Further non-adiabatic analysis at the C-H bond activation step demonstrates a decrease in coupling strength as we progress down the group, indicating a correlation with metal-ligand covalency. Notably, the reactivity trend is found to be correlated to the strength of the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling constant J via developing a magneto-structural-barrier map – offering a hitherto unknown route to fine-tune the reactivity of this important class of compound.

Abstract:The design of planar tetracoordinate carbon (ptC) has always been a challenge due to its unique bonding mode that necessitates the perfect balance between the carbon center and surrounding ligands both electronically and mechanically. A unique type of 18-valence-electron (18ve) template, i.e., CAl42-, has been found to be very effective in designing various novel 18ve-species upon skeletal substitution. In this work, we showed that though ptC is not the global structure for the parent 16ve-CAl4, suitable skeletal substitution can allow for a series of global minimum ptC species. Theoretical calculations at the level of CCSD(T)/def2-QZVP//B3LYP/def2-QZVP for 35 carbon-group 13 systems with 16-ve, i.e., CX(a)Y(b)Z(c)K(d) (X, Y, Z, K = Al/Ga/In/Tl; 0 <= a, b, c, d <= 4, a + b + c + d = 4), showed that 9 systems (CAl3Tl, CGa3Tl, CGa2Tl2, CAl2GaTl, CAl2InTl, CGa2InTl, CAlGa2Tl, CGa2InTl and CAlGaInTl) possess global minimum ptC and 2 systems (CAl3In and CAl2Tl2) have quasi-GM ptC. Except for CAl3Tl and CAl3In, all the ptCs were predicted for the first time. All these stable ptC structures have the same skeleton and can be described as the same ionic sub-structure, i.e., [A(-)]B+. This study not only enriches 16ve-ptC, but also directly demonstrates that utilizing an ionic strategy, non-ptC CAl4 also can be used as a template to extend the ptC family.
