Abstract:<h3>Abstract</h3><p>In the background that the China government robustly advocates low carbon and green energy, China has turned to focus on natural gas, both production and consumption of which are soaring high these days and the role of which is gradually prominent in energy sources. But it also faces many problems. With the rapid development of natural gas in China, it has gradually formed a system of natural gas industry chain. With the aims to help promote more healthy and sustainable development of natural gas industry in the future, it is very valuable to think deeply about the past development process. This paper reviews and analyzes China's natural gas resources, pipeline layout, and industry development status. Based on China's specific conditions and resource characteristics, it analyzes China's future natural gas development opportunities. Simultaneously, the analysis shows China's natural gas production will reach 236.5 billion cubic meters by 2030 and the proportion of natural gas in the primary energy structure will reach about 15% in 2030. But in terms of current natural gas production, the supply gap is very large. Moreover, the dependence on foreign natural gas imports has continued to increase in recent years. Thus, China should continue to improve its natural gas layout and utilization system, increase investment in domestic natural gas exploration and development, strengthen core technology research, and improve its relevant laws and regulations in order to better maintain the rapid development of natural gas.</p>

Abstract:In-depth research reveals that the natural gas accumulation and distribution are characterized by cycle, sequence, equilibrium, traceability, and multi-stage. To be specific, every geotectonic cycle represents a gas reservoir forming system where natural gas is generated, migrated, accumulated, and formed into a reservoir in a certain play. Essentially, hydrocarbon accumulation occurs when migration force and resistance reach an equilibrium. In this situation, the closer to the source rock, the higher the accumulation efficiency is. Historically, reservoirs were formed in multiple phases. Moreover, zones in source rocks and adjacent to source rocks, unconformity belts, and faulted anticline belts are favorable areas to finding large gas fields. Apart from the common unconformity belts and faulted anticline belts, in-source and near-source zones should be considered as critical targets for future exploration. Subsequent exploration should focus on Upper Palaeozoic in the southeastern Ordos Basin, Triassic in southwestern Sichuan Basin, Jurassic in the northern section of the Kuqa Depression and other zones where no great breakthroughs have been made.
Potential and prospects of conventional and unconventional natural gas resource in China

Abstract:Since a new round of oil and gas resource evaluation was completed in 2005,China's natural gas exploration has made continuous breakthroughs and progress.Annual added proved reserves of natural gas continuously achieve a substantial increase.Unconventional natural gas exploration such as coalbed methane,tight gas,shale gas,etc.realizes a historical breakthrough.And the study of natural gas geology theory achieves a number of important progresses.Based on natural gas exploration results and the latest research progress,a number of methods are used to carry out a systematic evaluation of conventional natural gas resources in China,and the resources prediction of tight gas and shale gas is made for the first time.The research results show that geological resources of conventional gas amount to 63×1012m3,with an increase of 18×1012m3 comparing with the new round of resource evaluation in 2005.Natural gas resources are mainly distributed in the key areas such as Tarim Basin,Sichuan Basin,Ordos Basin,and South China Sea,etc.The lithostratigraphic,foreland,marine carbonate rocks and deep water in the sea are main exploration areas for seeking large gas fields in the future.Geological resources of unconventional natural gas are(139.8～227.8)×1012m3,and recoverable resources are(34.9～47.9)×1012m3 in China.Although the unconventional natural gas resources are rich,current exploration and research are at a lower level.On the basis of the resource evaluation,potential and challenges of China's future natural gas development are analyzed.

Abstract:The global energy structure is on a low-carbon transition path featuring more natural gas consumption, and global natural gas demand has been increasing fast. Planning and operation of a natural gas supply system at a transient stage with multiple supply sources, end-consumers, and large infrastructure with multiple sub-systems are challenging tasks. Spatial and seasonal mismatch of natural gas supply and demand makes the natural gas distribution and infrastructure construction planning problem even more complex. Without proper planning, insufficient construction could lead to a shortage of natural gas supply, whilst excessive construction could lead to a higher cost. Quantitative analysis technologies are needed to facilitate decision-making during the transient stage of a natural gas system. In this work, we propose a monthly-scale multi-period and multi-regional modelling and optimization framework for planning and operation of a natural gas supply system at a transient stage, with a case study of the natural gas supply system in China. The optimal planning and operation strategy of the natural gas supply system in China by 2050 is obtained by minimizing the lifespan overall cost. Gaps between actual planning and the optimal planning are pointed out. Finally, policy suggestions are summarized, including establishing market-oriented pricing mechanisms, managing infrastructure centrally, promoting coordination amongst provinces when formulating projections, accelerating current infrastructure construction, and predicting natural gas demand and prices reasonably.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to model the trend of natural gas supply and demand in China in different circumstances from 1990 to 2050. Design/methodology/approach - The related factors were selected from references and classified into three categories such as endogenous, exogenous, and excluded factors. The three sub-models of supply, demand and their interconnection were built and integrated. The impacts of natural gas resources, the investment of gas industry and the energy structure over natural gas supply and demand were analyzed based on scenario analysis. Findings - The impact of energy structure in China is more evident compared to natural gas resources and the investment level. Research limitations/implications - Import and transportation of natural gas will have growing impacts on the supply and demand in China when the model is applied. Practical implications - A very useful method to analyze the equilibrium of natural gas supply and demand. Originality/value - The paper presents a new prediction model of natural gas supply and demand in system dynamics. The paper is aimed at the researchers and decision makers in energy industries, especially in the fields of energy prices.

Abstract:China's energy policy increasingly emphasizes reducing coal consumption and increasing the proportion of natural gas, which has an impact on natural gas security. Although natural gas import dependence is an important index, it is only a dimension reflecting the security status of natural gas supply and demand. This paper comprehensively studies the long-term and short-term natural gas security from the perspective of supply and demand and the external environment by using annual and monthly data based on the principal component analysis method, identifying the main factors affecting natural gas supply and demand security. It is found that in 1992–2017, China's natural gas security curve is U-shaped, and at the same time, the fluctuation of natural gas supply and demand between different months in a year cannot be ignored. Further, we compare the natural gas security of China and that of the United States. It shows that China's comprehensive score of natural gas supply and demand risk is significantly higher than that of the United States. Based on these findings, this paper suggests corresponding policy implications to enhance China's natural gas security.

Abstract:Natural gas hydrate has been proved significant as a kind of unconventional energy source.However,the sand production from gas hydrate-bearing deposits has remained a nightmare to the commercial development of the resource.The northern slope of the South China Sea is an important natural gas hydrate area in China.The natural gas hydrate there is distributed mainly in a scattered pattern by weakly cemented deposits and it really is urgent to study the mechanism of sand production for sustainable development of the resource.The fundamental reason of sand production is the decrease in the strength of reservoir medium,which is cemented by hydrate,and effected by the factors of hydrate saturation,pore fluid pressure,flow rate,production pressure and so on.Based on the comparison of sand production from the natural gas hydrate reservoir to the conventional oil and gas reservoir,this paper summarizes the up-todate research results of sand production in weakly cemented sandstone reservoirs,and taking it as a reference we studied the sand production in natural gas hydrate reservoirs.

Abstract:The continuous growth of natural gas demand in China has brought about supply security from the insufficient supply of domestic resources and ever-increasing dependency on natural gas imports. A multi-agent game framework for supply security is proposed to investigate availability, accessibility, and affordability along natural gas industry and supply chain. In this framework, an exhaustible resource market equilibrium model based on mixed complementary programming (MCP) is developed, taking into account the dynamic depletion of the remaining recoverable reserves, to evaluate the gas supply security in China. The results indicate the supply security of China's natural gas is far from optimistic from 2020 to 2049, and the newly-increased recoverable reserves of 200 bcm/a are required to meet the expanding scale of the natural gas market. However, it will face supply risks with lower Reserve-Production ratios after 2030 and higher dependencies after 2040. Therefore, the equilibrium model is used to simulate for seeking feasible solutions to ensure the natural gas supply security from three aspects: market structure, discount rate, and resources tax. Several combinational strategies suitable for China's natural gas supply security are suggested according to the market structure, natural gas import, discount rate, and resources tax for building a more diversification system of natural gas supply, establishing an efficient allocation system of the natural gas market and setting up an effective strategic stockpile system of natural gas resources.

Abstract:Science Progress, Volume 107, Issue 1, January-March 2024. The security of natural gas supply is not only an important part of China's energy security, it also serves as a basic guarantee for China to achieve its dual carbon target and energy transition. Therefore, it is very important to conduct research on the security of China's natural gas supply and demand in the context of the dual carbon target. This paper develops a system dynamics (SD) model for natural gas demand forecasting and a generalized Weng's model for production forecasting to predict China's natural gas demand and production under different scenarios during 2022–2060, and then analyzes China's natural gas supply and demand situation and potential import and external dependence based on the forecast results. The simulation results show that (1) under the two demand scenarios D1 and D2, China's natural gas demand will peak at 766.02 billion m3 in 2046 and 708.07 billion m3 in 2036 and decline to 521.65 billion m3 and 278.99 billion m3 in 2060 respectively; (2) under the two production scenarios S1 and S2, China's natural gas production will peak at 344.581 billion m3 in 2042 and 366.341 billion m3 in 2043 and decrease to about 250 billion m3 in 2060; (3) before 2035, the security of natural gas supply in China will face a challenging situation, the total volume of potential gas imports will gradually increase to about 350 billion m3, and China's dependence on natural gas imports will exceed 50%; after 2035, the progress of China's energy transition will improve the security of its natural gas supply. This paper proposes four recommendations for expanding gas demand in the near to medium term, promoting conventional and unconventional gas production, diversifying import channels and building emergency reserves to ensure China's gas supply security and enable gas to play a "bridging" role in the energy transition.

Abstract:Due to the growing pollution concerns in China, there have been major efforts to design interrelated environmental protection policies. As the policy of reducing coal consumption is implemented, China's natural gas consumption is expected to commensurately rise. Such a trend may lead to the significant impacts on China's energy security and the global gas market. This paper empirically investigates the relationship between the natural gas consumption and influencing factors in a comprehensive LMDI-STIRPAT-PLSR framework. It is found that fossil energy structure and non-clean energy structure are the most important factors followed by urbanization, per capita GDP, industrialization, and industrial energy intensity. And then, these factors from LMDI decomposition are innovatively divided into economic development and cleaning indicators when using scenario analysis to forecast China's natural gas consumption. The prediction results suggest that economic development with high clean energy system would make a significant increase in gas consumption, a commensurate increase in demand even the system of economic-energy under scenario of low economic development and low clean. As China would depend on gas imports to meet this demand, there may be a serious supply shortage by 2020. Therefore, the government should consider the future energy security issue in making economic and environmental policies.

Abstract:The spread of natural gas in the main international natural gas markets shows characteristics of violent fluctuation, frequent mutation, and periodic evolution, which pose a great challenge to the safety and sustainable development of natural gas in China. First, this paper used the complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) model to decompose and reconstruct natural gas "Asian premium." Based on the evolution law of each subsequence, the "Asian premium" was decomposed into four parts: speculative, geographical, energy security, and fundamental. Second, this study adopts the Bayesian model averaging (BMA) method to extract the main factors and uses the TVP-SV-VAR (time varying parameter stochastic volatility vector autoregression) model to characterize the nonlinear relationships. The results showed that the speculative motivation of suppliers and the cross-regional transportation cost of natural gas were the main reasons for the fluctuations, and the influence of oil prices on "Asian premium" was gradually reduced. The impulse response results showed that when the financial crisis hit in 2008, the impact of energy security and economic fundamentals on the "Asian premium" was more obvious. In the case of supply shortages, financial speculation and geographical factors played a more significant role in the "Asian premium" for natural gas. Abstract:As an extension of our previous study on natural gas use in world economy (Kan et al., Energy Policy 124 (2019) 215–225), this paper explores policy implications based on a time series analysis uncovering the evolution of natural gas use embodied in global supply chains during 2000-2011. Due to increasing gas supply from gas-rich regions to gas-scarce regions and outsourcing of energy-intensive industries, trade imbalance of embodied natural gas is intensifying globally, corresponding to strengthening gas resource relocation and environmental stress shift. Regarding trade patterns, EU and Russia remain the leading (net) importer and exporter of embodied gas, respectively. And global trade relations are diversifying over time, with more suppliers and recipients joining the international trade. Based on the New Policies Scenario provided by IEA, a long term forecast of embodied gas use illustrates need to prepare for a world with changing energy mix, with respect to growing availability of low-cost natural gas and robust demand growth coming from emerging economies, especially China, who is struggling to fight against air pollution through coal-to-gas switch. Potential room to expand natural gas utilization is also targeted, and the expansion requires coordination of all the agents in global supply chains.
Natural Gas Reserves Growth Prediction and Exploration Potential Analysis in Junggar Basin

Abstract:Based on Weng's cycle theory,a life-cycle prediction is performed with HCZ model for the growth trend of natural gas reserves in Junggar basin.The result shows that the peak of proven reserves will occur in the year of 2027 with the annual proven reserves of 268.49×l08 m3 and the corresponding proven ratio of 25.8%.Till the year of 2092,the cumulative proven reserves will be 1.42×l012 m3 and the cumulative proven ratio of resources will reach 67.52%.A series of analyses are conducted on natural gas resources and its exploration status and potential in Junggar basin.It is considered that the natural gas exploration of Junggar basin is still in its early stage and giant potential of resources remains to be explored;there are two directions and targets for petroleum exploration: the first one is to stick to looking for coal-formed gas around the areas with abundant humic parent materials such as the lower combination in southern margin of Junggar basin(the Middle-Lower Jurassic coal-formed gas),volcanic reservoirs in the hinterland(the Carboniferous coal-formed gas) and Zhongguai in the northwestern margin-District 5-8(the Lower Permian Jiamuhe coal-formed gas);the second one is to conduct study on over-mature cracked-gas in the center of the basin so as to make a breakthrough as soon as possible.

Abstract:China has been attempting to realise green sustainable economic development. Thus, China has proposed and begun to implement the 'switching from coal to gas' policy to realise the energy structure transition but neglected to consider seasonal natural gas demand fluctuations, gas supply shortages, the backward gas transportation and storage infrastructure. This paper constructs a model of China's natural gas distribution system by incorporating these four factors: ① supply factors including domestic natural gas fields, liquid natural gas receiving stations, internationally piped gas sources, ② demand factors including domestic regional demands, ③ real natural gas transportation pipeline systems in the country, and ④ the pricing mechanism of natural gas. Optimal spatial natural gas distribution with maximum social welfare under the three conditions are simulated, respectively: the ① fixed price system, ② market pricing mechanism, and ③ seasonal fluctuations. The simulation results indicate substantial changes would occur in China's natural gas system during the switch from coal to gas, and the natural gas infrastructure requires further improvement. This paper also provides references for the natural gas storage facility location selection in China.

Abstract:Due to the revolution of the economic growth, urbanization, and low-carbon development of China, the proportion of natural gas in the national primary energy consumption has been growing rapidly in recent years. In the meanwhile, the contradiction between the supply and demand in China's natural gas market (NGM) has also been increasing gradually. Accordingly, the Chinese government has introduced a slew of policies to ease this contradiction. However, China's NGM is still facing many problems and challenges. The purpose of this study is to investigate the peak-shaving demand of the NGM in China, as well as to estimate the status and trend of underground gas storage (UGS) development for peak-shaving of the NGM. Firstly, the status and development direction of the NGM in China is discussed considering the supply and demand situation. The regional difference, the seasonal difference and the import impact are analyzed in detail to clarify the peak-shaving demand of national natural gas supply. Secondly, the status, direction, difficulties and challenges of UGS are discussed in depth. Finally, this study proposes some potential suggestions for the regulation of the NGM and the development of UGS in China.

Abstract:The rising share of natural gas in global energy mix has resulted in concern over its security recently. But research from a perspective of exporting countries has not attracted enough attention. This study examines natural gas security from a supply vs. demand perspective. Firstly, a natural gas security index (NGSI) is formulated to quantify the NGSI score (NGSItot) of 22 selected countries, and the approach is based on a quantitative application of the "four As" of energy security. Secondly, a balance NGSI score (NGSIbla) matrix is introduced to gauge how well a specific country manages the trade-offs among the "four As". Key research findings are as follows: (1) Proven gas reserves per capita and Annual median PM2.5 concentration are more important than other indicators. (2) Nations that have a more balanced pattern against these four-A dimensions rank better. (3) According to the NGSIbla, eight countries fall into the Good group, ten in the Limited group, and four in the Weak group. Consequently, this study suggests that differentiated policy frameworks should be tailor-made for specific country to ensure natural gas security. This article contributes a replicable method of energy security evaluation, and a comprehensive policy framework to enhance natural gas security.

Abstract:Due to the energy characteristic of rich coal and less gas in China, developing coal to gas (CTG) was one of the important ways to obtain the natural gas resources and to alleviate the contradiction between supply and demand of natural gas. Developing CTG projects could not only utilize inferior coal resources in China reasonably and adjust the structure of coal consumption, but could also realize the clean utilization of coal and relieve the tense gas supply, as well as ensure the energy security. The industrial process, governmental policy and current status of the CTG industry in China were presented. Besides, the necessity and economy of domestic development of CTG as well as the main problems in the development process of CTG were analyzed. Finally, feasible suggestions for healthy development of CTG industry were put forward.
