Abstract:Using the strategy of ligand fine-tuning by steric hindrance, we successfully obtained Solomon links ( 4_1^2 ) and figure-eight knots (4 1 ) with half-sandwich organometallic unit and amino-acid embedded ligands. The two curved bidentate ligands exhibit subtle differences, whereas they result in totally distinct entanglement modes. An alcoholysis reaction with the ligands leads to the formation of a molecular tweezer. Notably, unsymmetrical ligands were utilized in the self-assembly process to explore the formation of directional molecules, and the reactions exhibited selectivity due to comprehensive π interactions and multiple hydrogen bonds. The topologies and behavior of the above structures were confirmed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance techniques and mass spectrometry.

Abstract:Four flexible ligands with different lengths, degrees of flexibility, and steric bulk were synthesized and used to prepare metal-directed assemblies. Interestingly, minor differences among the ligands led to products with dramatically different topologies: a binuclear D-shaped macrocycle, tetranuclear rectangles, and hexanuclear trefoil knots. The interconversion of the trefoil-shaped complexes was also investigated. This contribution introduces a rare ligand-controlled trefoil-rectangle shape transformation in solution.

Abstract:A template-free Cp*Ir-based molecular Solomon link and an unusual trefoil knot induced by stacking interactions were realized via selection of the nonrigid dipyridyl ligand 4,4'-bis(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (BpmBp). In addition, a novel heterobimetallic tetranuclear (IrIII2 + AgI2) complex featuring argentophilic interaction was synthesized in high yield. Remarkably, the reversible topological transformation between the Solomon link and an unusual trefoil knot can be achieved by utilizing the chemical reactivity of silver(I) ions under mild conditions, as demonstrated by a detailed X-ray crystallographic study.

Abstract:Two Cp*-Rh III based trefoil knots were obtained in high yield under ambient conditions via the coordination-driven self-assembly of semi-rigid thioether dipyridyl ligand 1,4-bis[(pyridin-4-ylthio)methyl]benzene ( L 1 ), ligand chloranilic acid (H 2 - CA ) and 6,11-dihydroxytetracene-5,12-dione (H 2 - TtDo ) with Cp*Rh III metal corner units, respectively. Furthermore, using the bulkier 4,4'-{[(2,5-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)bis(methylene)]bis(sulfanediyl)}dipyridine ( L 2 ) in the place of ligand L 1 in the construction process resulted in the formation of a teranuclear metallacycle and a template-free Borromean ring in high yields thanks to significantly altered intermolecular forces between the constituent ligands induced by the sterically-hindering methyl groups of L 2 , as demonstrated via a detailed X-ray crystallographic analysis and NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract:Molecular knots and other topological architectures have attracted increasing attention over the past few decades. However, in solution, these architectures usually exist as mixtures due to their instability, which limits their potential applications. Herein, two molecular building blocks with large conjugated-π areas and two nonrigid ligands with suitable flexibility were selectively employed to obtain complicated architectures with high stabilities. Remarkably, three very stable trefoil knots were obtained, as expected in advance, whose high stabilities can be attributed to π-π stacking, C–H···π interactions and hydrogen bonds. This research provides a strategy to obtain complicated molecular architectures with high stabilities.
A Steered Molecular Dynamics Study on the Elastic Behaviour of Knotted Polymer Chains

Abstract:In this paper the influence of a knot on the structure of a polymethylene (PM) strand in the tensile process is investigated by using the steered molecular dynamics (SMD) method. The gradual increasing of end-to-end distance, R, results in a tighter knot and a more stretched contour. That the break in a knotted rope almost invariably occurs at a point just outside the 'entrance' to the knot, which has been shown in a good many experiments, is further theoretically verified in this paper through the calculation of some structural and thermodynamic parameters. Moreover, it is found that the analyses on bond length, torsion angle and strain energy can facilitate to the study of the localization and the size of a knot in the tensile process. The symmetries of torsion angles, bond lengths and bond angles in the knot result in the whole symmetry of the knot in microstructure, thereby adapting itself to the strain applied. Additionally, the statistical property of the force-dependent average knot size illuminates in detail the change in size of a knot with force f, and therefore the minimum size of the knot in the restriction of the potentials considered in this work for a PM chain is deduced. At the same time, the difference in response to uniaxial strain, between a knotted PM strand and an unknotted one is also investigated. The force-extension profile is easily obtained from the simulation. As expected, for a given f, the knotted chain has an R significantly smaller than that of an unknotted polymer. However, the scaled difference becomes less pronounced for larger values of N, and the results for longer chains approach those of the unknotted chains.

Abstract:Simple and efficient synthetic routes to topologically complex mechanically interlocked molecules remain scarce owing to the sophisticated three-dimensional entanglement of their structures. We report herein the coordination-driven self-assembly from a trefoil knot to a structure comprising two interlocked homochiral trefoil knots by increasing the length of the ligands. The quadruple interlocking of two trefoil knots of the same handedness gives the resulting molecular prime double trefoil link with a total of 14 crossings. Molecular trefoil knots of single topological chirality are formed via enantiopure ligands. Likewise, a pair of topological enantiomers of the double trefoil link are separately and stereoselectively constructed through chirality transfer from the constituent ligands. The synthesis and topological chirality of the trefoil knot and the double trefoil link have been confirmed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy and circular dichroism spectroscopy. Construction of molecular links from non-trivial knots rather than just trivial macrocycles provides a synthetic strategy for topologically complex mechanically interlocked molecules. Interlocking between non-trivial molecular knots provides a route to topologically complex mechanically interlocked molecules. Now, a topologically chiral prime link with 14 crossings is synthesized in a stereoselective manner through the quadruple interlocking of two homochiral trefoil knots.

Abstract:Realizing topological transformation through supramolecular fusion is particularly challenging, as the self-assembly of disparate components often results in the orthogonal assembly of building blocks into distinct structures rather than the formation of a heteroleptic architecture. This study introduces a topological transformation, transitioning from a figure-eight knot (41 knot) to a Solomon link (412 link) through a supramolecular fusion process. By employing two structurally similar amino acid ligands (L1 and L3) of varying lengths as bridge ligands, we obtained figure-eight knot 1 and a molecular tweezer-like compound 3 when individually complexed with binuclear Cp*Rh acceptor B1. Our results revealed that subtle modifications to bridge ligands can lead to dramatic changes in their structures and recognition properties. Moreover, we successfully achieved the targeted formation of a heteroleptic Solomon link 4 by blending figure-eight knot 1 and compound 3 in a 1:1 ratio without the need for templates. This procedure effortlessly converted the 41 knot into a 412 link, thus marking a significant advancement in the topological transformation. This work not only marks the construction of the first heteroleptic Solomon link comprising two distinct metallamacrocycles but also demonstrates a process of supramolecular fusion-based topological transformation involving three distinct topological structures.

Abstract:The synthesis of complicated supramolecular architectures and the study of their reversible structural transformations remains a fascinating challenge in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Herein, two types of novel coordination compounds, a non-intertwined ring-in-ring assembly and an abnormal trefoil knot were constructed from a strategically selected Cp*Rh building block and a semi-rigid N,N'-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)diphthalic diimide ligand via coordination-driven self-assembly. Remarkably, the reversible transformation between the abnormal trefoil knot and the ring-in-ring assembly or the corresponding tetranuclear macrocycle could be achieved by the synergistic effects of Ag+ ion coordination and alteration of the solvent. Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic data and NMR spectroscopic experiments support the structural assignments.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling the topology of self-assembled structures plays a fundamental role in supramolecular chemistry. Herein, the preparation of a series of tetranuclear metallarectangles and hexanuclear trefoil knots featuring Cp*Rh building blocks by template-free self-assembly with four different rigid and flexible ligands is described. Transformations between the trefoil knots and the corresponding macrocycles can be induced by using concentration effects. Remarkably, the hexanuclear trefoil knot 5 was shown to assemble further to provide rare examples of [12+1] heteronuclear double trefoil knots (5 a/5 b/5 c/5 d) through coordination of the amide oxygen atoms to the secondary metal ions Na+/K+/Ca2+/Cd2+. The synthetic results are supported by single-crystal XRD.

Abstract:Abstract The preparation of topologically nontrivial molecules is often assisted by covalent, supramolecular or coordinative templates that provide spatial pre-organization for all components. Herein, we report a trefoil knot that can be self-assembled efficiently in water without involving additional templates. The direct condensation of three equivalents of a tetraformyl precursor and six equivalents of a chiral diamine produces successfully a [3 + 6] trefoil knot whose intrinsic handedness is dictated by the stereochemical configuration of the diamine linkers. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that imine condensation is not amenable to use in water, the multivalent cooperativity between all the imine bonds within the framework makes this trefoil knot robust in the aqueous environment. Furthermore, the presence of water is proven to be essential for the trefoil knot formation. A topologically trivial macrocycle composed of two tetraformyl and four diamino building blocks is obtained when a similar reaction is performed in organic media, indicating that hydrophobic effect is a major driving force behind the scene.

Abstract:Supramolecular bonds have been widely used for designing polymers because of their reversible nature. In contrast, utilization of their dynamic equilibrium nature to access materials of unusual mechanical properties has been poorly explored. Taking full advantage of this latter attribute requires the design of polymer networks with high contents of supramolecular bonds. In this work, polymer networks with high contents of self‐complementary hydrogen bonds (ureidopyrimidinone) are synthesized using thiol–acrylate click addition. The excellent tunability of the network allows a range of intriguing mechanical properties to be achieved including the transition from plasticity to elasticity, ultrasoft shape memory polymer, strong strain rate dependence, and high mechanical damping. Materials with such versatile dynamic behaviors may open up a range of new applications.

Abstract:Over the past decades, molecular knots and links have captivated the chemical community due to their promising mimicry properties in molecular machines and biomolecules and are being realized with increasing frequency with small molecules. Herein, we describe how to utilize stacking interactions and hydrogen-bonding patterns to form trefoil knots, figure-eight knots and [2]catenanes. A transformation can occur between the unique trefoil knot and its isomeric boat-shaped tetranuclear macrocycle by the complementary concentration effect. Remarkably, the realization and authentication of the molecular figure-eight knot with four crossings fills the blank about 41 knot in knot tables. The [2]catenane topology is obtained because the selective naphthalenediimide (NDI)-based ligand, which can engender favorable aromatic donor-acceptor π interactions due to its planar, electron-deficient aromatic surface. The stacking interactions and hydrogen-bond interactions play important roles in these self-assembly processes. The advantages provide an avenue for the generation of structurally and topologically complex supramolecular architectures.

Abstract:Although mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) display unique properties and functions associated with their intricate connectivity, limited assembly strategies are available for their synthesis. Herein, we presented a synergistic assembly strategy based on coordination and noncovalent interactions (π-π stacking and CH⋯π interactions) to selectively synthesize molecular closed three-link chains ([Formula: see text] links), highly entangled figure-eight knots ([Formula: see text] knots), trefoil knot ([Formula: see text] knot), and Borromean ring ([Formula: see text] link). [Formula: see text] links can be created by the strategic assembly of nonlinear multicurved ligands incorporating a furan or phenyl group with the long binuclear half-sandwich organometallic Cp*RhIII (Cp* = η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) clip. However, utilizing much shorter binuclear Cp*RhIII units for union with the 2,6-naphthyl-containing ligand led to a [Formula: see text] knot because of the increased π-π stacking interactions between four consecutive stacked layers and CH⋯π interactions. Weakening such π-π stacking interactions resulted in a [Formula: see text] knot. The universality of this synergistic assembly strategy for building [Formula: see text] knots was verified by utilizing a 1,5-naphthyl-containing ligand. Quantitative conversion between the [Formula: see text] knot and the simple macrocycle species was accomplished by adjusting the concentrations monitored by NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Furthermore, increasing the stiff π-conjugated area of the binuclear unit afforded molecular Borromean ring, and this topology is a topological isomer of the [Formula: see text] link. These artificial metalla-links and metalla-knots were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR and ESI-MS. The results offer a potent strategy for building higher-order MIMs and emphasize the critical role that noncovalent interactions play in creating sophisticated topologies.

Abstract:In this work, a noncoplanar terphenyl served as building block to synthesize a novel 3,3'‐substituted bipyridyl ligand (L1) which further reacted with binuclear half‐sandwich units A/B, giving rise to two aesthetical 41 metalla‐knots in high yields via coordination‐driven self‐assembly strategy. Furthermore, given the inherent compactness of the 41 metalla‐knots, it creates favorable conditions for the emergence of steric repulsion. We focused on progressively introducing nitrogen atoms featuring lone pair electrons (LPEs) into ligand L1 to manipulate the balance of H···H/LPEs···LPEs steric repulsion during the assembly process, ultimately achieving controlled assembly from 41 metalla‐knots to the pseudo‐Solomon link and then to molecular tweezer‐like assembly facilitated by stacking interactions. All the assemblies were well characterized by solution‐state NMR techniques, ESI‐TOF/MS, and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. The evolutionary process of topological architectures is equivalent to visualizing the synergistic effect of steric hindrance and stacking interactions on structural assembly, providing a new avenue for achieving the controlled synthesis of different topologies.
