Abstract:Carbon-supported Pd4Au- and Pd2.5Sn-alloyed nanoparticles were prepared by a chemical reduction method, and characterized by a wide array of experimental techniques including mass spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. Ethanol electrooxidation on the as-synthesized catalysts and commercial Pt/C was then investigated and compared in alkaline media by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies at room temperature. Voltammetric and chronoamperometric measurements showed higher current density and longer term stability in ethanol oxidation with the palladium alloy nanocatalysts than with the commercial one. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Tafel plots were employed to examine the charge-transfer kinetics of ethanol electrooxidation. The results suggest that whereas the reaction kinetics might be somewhat more sluggish on the Pd-based alloy catalysts than on commercial Pt/C, the former appeared to have a higher tolerance to surface poisoning. Overall, the Pd-based alloy catalysts represent promising candidates for the electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol, and Pd4Au/C displays the best catalytic activity among the series for the ethanol oxidation in alkaline media.
Pt-Cu Alloy with High Density of Surface Pt Defects for Efficient Catalysis of Breaking C-C Bond in Ethanol

Abstract:The Pt-Cu alloy/C (AC-PtCu-4/C) with uniform nanoparticles and high density of surface defects was synthesized by the microwave-polyol technique following acid-treatment. The AC-PtCu-4/C contained much higher density of surface defects than did the commercial Pt/C. Electrochemical characterization demonstrated that the AC-PtCu-41C exhibited mass activity and surface activity 4.8 and 3.9 times higher than those of Pt/C for ethanol oxidation. Moreover, the AC-PtCu-4/C can enhance the C-C bond cleavage of ethanol to generate CO2 2.47 times more than that of Pt/C under the same conditions, as evidenced by in situ FTIR reflection spectroscopy. Ethanol oxidation on a nichrome-supported spherical platinum microparticle electrocatalyst prepared by electrodeposition

Abstract:A novel electrode was rapidly prepared by depositing microparticle platinum onto a nichrome substrate in dilute chloroplatinic acid solution by cyclic voltammetry. The SEM results revealed that the deposits were composed of spherical Pt microparticles. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were used for the characterization of the electrodes. Results of the electrochemical measurements showed that the spherical Pt microparticle electrodes retained the properties of metal platinum, increased the catalytic activity and promoted the electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol. Moreover, the deposited Pt microparticles improved the electrochemical properties of the support material and reduced the dosage of noble metal platinum remarkably. The cost could be reduced dramatically by decreasing the contents of platinum. The spherical Pt microparticles deposited on the nichrome supports are likely a potential electrocatalyst for ethanol electrooxidation.
Bimetallic AgPt Nanoalloys as an Electrocatalyst for Ethanol Oxidation Reaction: Synthesis, Structural Analysis, and Electro-Catalytic Activity

Abstract:In the present work, the chemical synthesis of AgPt nanoalloys is reported by the polyol method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a surfactant and a heterogeneous nucleation approach. Nanoparticles with different atomic compositions of the Ag and Pt elements (1:1 and 1:3) were synthesized by adjusting the molar ratios of the precursors. The physicochemical and microstructural characterization was initially performed using the UV-Vis technique to determine the presence of nanoparticles in suspension. Then, the morphology, size, and atomic structure were determined using XRD, SEM, and HAADF-STEM techniques, confirming the formation of a well-defined crystalline structure and homogeneous nanoalloy with an average particle size of less than 10 nm. Finally, the cyclic voltammetry technique evaluated the electrochemical activity of bimetallic AgPt nanoparticles supported on Vulcan XC-72 carbon for the ethanol oxidation reaction in an alkaline medium. Chronoamperometry and accelerated electrochemical degradation tests were performed to determine their stability and long-term durability. The synthesized AgPt (1:3)/C electrocatalyst presented significative catalytic activity and superior durability due to the introduction of Ag that weakens the chemisorption of the carbonaceous species. Thus, it could be an attractive candidate for cost-effective ethanol oxidation compared to commercial Pt/C.

Surface Noble Metal Modified PdM/C (M = Ru, Pt, Au) As Anode Catalysts for Direct Ethanol Fuel Cells

Abstract:In this article, we studied the surface noble metal modification on Pd nanoparticles, other than the homogeneous or core-shell structure. The surface modification will lead to the uneven constitution within the nanoparticles and thus more obvious optimization effect toward the catalyst brought by the lattice deformation. The surface of the as-prepared Pd nanoparticles was modified with Ru, Pt or Au by a moderate and green approach, respectively. XPS results confirm the interactive electron effects between Pd and the modified noble metal. Electrochemical measurements show that the surface noble metal modified catalysts not only show higher catalytic activity, but also better stability and durability. The PdM/C catalysts all exhibit good dispersion and very little agglomeration after long-term potential cycles toward ethanol oxidation. With only 10% metallic atomic ratio of Au, PdAu/C catalyst shows extraordinary catalytic activity and stability, the peak current reaches 1700 mA mg(-1) Pd, about 2.5 times that of Pd/C. Moreover, the PdAu/C maintains 40% of the catalytic activity after 4500 potential cycles. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Manipulation of Pt∧Ag Nanostructures for Advanced Electrocatalyst

Abstract:Attempts are made in this study to manipulate nanostructures of Pt-flecks on Ag nanoparticles ((PtmAg)-Ag-Lambda) for advanced electrocatalysts by reflux citrate reduction of Pt from (PtCl42-)-Cl-II or (PtCl62-)-Cl-II ions in solution containing Ag colloids at different atomic Pt/Ag ratio (m). Characterizations with UV-vis, SERS, XPS, and XRD showed a gradual Pt covering of the Ag colloids with increasing m when (PtCl42-)-Cl-II was the precursor of Pt ((PtmAg)-Ag-Lambda-A samples). However, due to an involvement of the galvanic replacement reaction between (PtVCl62-)-V-II and the metallic Ag colloids during the citrate reduction of (PtCl62-)-Cl-II ions, a distinct alloying of Pt with the underlying Ag particles took place at the surface region of the colloidal Ag particles when Pe(IV)Cl(6)(2-) was the precursor of Pt ((PtmAg)-Ag-Lambda-B samples). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement of the electrochemically active surface area (EAS) showed that the Pt utilization (U-Pt) in (PtmAg)-Ag-Lambda-A increased with the decrease in m. The mass-specific activity (MSA) of Pt for the electrooxidation of either methanol or formic acid increased linearly with U-Pt in (PtmAg)-Ag-Lambda-A, but was enhanced significantly with proper Pt-Ag alloying in (PtmAg)-Ag-Lambda-B catalysts. Fine-tuning the extent of Pt-Ag alloying resulted in optimized (PtmAg)-Ag-Lambda-B catalyst at 0.47 <= m <= 0.53, whose activity by MSA of Pt was I order of magnitude higher in methanol electrooxidation and six times higher in formic acid electrooxidation than its (PtmAg)-Ag-Lambda-A counterpart of similar U-Pt.

Abstract:Direct ethanol fuel cell can convert chemical energy into electric energy directly, and has the advantages of being free from Carnot cycle and being friendly to environment, so it has a broad application prospect. However, the insufficient activity and toxicity resistance of anodic catalysts limit their commercial application, mainly due to the limited adsorption sites and the toxic inactivation of catalysts resulting from the production of toxic intermediates (CO ads ) during the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) process. In this study, the Au@PdAg porous hemispherical catalyst assembled by nanotubes was successfully prepared by soft template method and co-reduction method using dioctadecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DODAC) as surfactant, and its EOR performance was tested. Au@Pd 1.0 Ag 1.0 has the highest mass current density with a peak value of 4048.8 mAmgPd−1 , which is 7.8 times of Pd/C (JM). After 5000 s stability test, the residual current density value is still 863.4 mAmgPd−1 . The results showed that the introduction of the oxygenophilic metal Ag was conducive to the formation of OH ads and the oxidation of CO ads . The porous structure of the nanotube assembly facilitates electron transfer and provides more adsorption sites, which makes the catalyst show good electrocatalytic activity and anti-CO poisoning ability.

Abstract:This communication reports a simple approach to synthesize Cu 2 O@Pt nanocatalysts with different contents of platinum by using the galvanic replacement reaction. And the mass and specific activities of Cu 2 O@Pt 0.07 nanocatalyst (0.611 mA μg Pt -1 , 1.68 mA cm -2 ) are 2.8 and 4.3 times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst.

Abstract:Pt-ZrO_2/C catalyst was prepared and characterized by TEM and XRD.The electrochemical activity of PtZrO_2/C catalyst for ethanol oxidation was investigated by using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in alkaline solutions and compared with Pt/C(20*!%Pt,ETEK).The results showed that Pt-ZrO_2/C gave higher catalytic activity for ethanol electro-oxidation.The highest current density was obtained at Pt/ZrO_2 molar ratio with 1∶1 and the lower peak potential appeared when the Pt/ZrO_2 molar ratio was 1∶4.

Abstract:Nanostructures containing Pt-flecks on Ag colloids (Pt^Ag) were prepared by Pt deposition from citrate reduction of PtIVCl62- or PtIICl42- ions. The nanostructures prepared from PtIVCl62- showed more or less Pt–Ag alloying due to the galvanic replacement reaction between PtIVCl62- and metallic Ag colloids. The Pt–Ag alloying at the surface of Ag colloids was manipulated by tuning the atomic Pt/Ag ratio (m) during preparation. It was demonstrated that a proper Pt–Ag alloying in a narrow composition window (0.47⩽m⩾0.53) can led to a dramatic activity enhancement of Pt, up to one order of magnitude higher, for methanol electro-oxidation.

Abstract:This study investigates the performance of Ag/C and a range of Ag 100-x Pt x /C nanoparticles as electrocatalysts for glycerol electrooxidation reaction (GEOR). Low amounts of Pt (<2 %) were spontaneously deposited on Ag-supported nanoparticles using Ag as a sacrificial metal. The primary aim of the study is to determine the impact of adding a small amount of Pt to the Ag/C catalyst. Cyclic voltammetry is employed to assess the electrocatalyst's performance, while in situ Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is used to examine the formed reaction intermediates and products. Additionally, physical characterization techniques such as XRD and XPS are applied to analyze the material structure. The Ag 100-x Pt x /C series of catalysts show a significant improvement in the glycerol oxidation process with the addition of 0.25 % of Pt to the material composition compared to pure Ag. It is observed that the enhancement performance reaches a limit at a Pt composition of approximately 7 % in the metallic nanoparticles, indicating that further increases in Pt content do not yield additional improvements. The in situ FTIR studies reveal that the presence of Pt on the Ag surface leads to a distinct glycerol electrooxidation mechanism compared to using Ag alone. Small amounts of Pt deposits promote C − C − C bond breaking, as evidenced by the selective formation of formic acid and CO 2 . FTIR results demonstrate a preference for carboxylic acid formation, with no significant evidence of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) production. The findings emphasize the critical role of Pt composition in the electrooxidation of glycerol paving the way for the design and development of more efficient and sustainable electrooxidation catalysts.

Abstract:Combining hard templating and in‐situ reduction methods, few‐layer Ag‐coated ordered mesoporous Pt nanocrystals are synthesized for efficient alkaline ethanol oxidation. Direct ethanol fuel cells have broad application prospects, but there are still some issues such as slow oxidation kinetics and poisoning effects of intermediates in the anodic ethanol reduction reaction (EOR). Herein, a series of few‐layer Ag‐coated ordered mesoporous Pt nanocrystals (Meso‐Pt@Ag) with different Ag shell thicknesses are prepared by combining hard templating and in situ reduction methods. Benefiting from the ordered mesoporous structure, the lattice strain, and the electronic synergistic effect induced by the core–shell structure, Meso‐Pt@Ag2 nanocrystals exhibit the best EOR performance with a mass activity of 10.01 A mgPt−1, which is 8.40‐fold of commercial Pt/C and 4.45‐fold of Meso‐Pt, respectively. And, Meso‐Pt@Ag2 nanocrystals also show the favorable toxicity resistance to carbonaceous intermediates and stability for EOR. Furthermore, theoretical calculations demonstrate that the Ag‐coated Pt core has more optimized deprotonation reaction kinetics and lower CO adsorption energy, indicating its better resistance to CO toxicity for EOR.

Abstract:Tuning the chemical composition and surface structure of electrodes is demonstrated as a feasible and effective strategy to tailor advanced catalysts for energy electrocatalysis. In this work, hierarchical palladium-silver alloy nanosheets (PdAg NS) with the thickness ~7 atoms and rich atomic defects are successfully prepared, using the carbon monoxide (CO) confinement approach. The optimized Pd7Ag3 NS/C exhibits 8.8 times higher catalytic peak current density and much better stability toward ethanol electrooxidation than Pd NS/C catalyst. The catalytic enhancement mechanism could be attributed to the synergetic effects among optimized electronic structure of Pd, novel architecture, and rich atomic defects.

Abstract:To develop high-performance low-Pt electrocatalysts for direct alcohol fuel cell (DAFC), we herein propose an interfacial engineering strategy, using interfacial Ag nanowire array as a sacrificing template and successfully fabricating AgPtAu nanotrough array catalyst at water/air interfaces. By adjusting the conditions of interfacial reaction, composition-varied AgPtAu nanotrough array can be obtained easily. The formation of the trough-like morphology of AgPtAu can be attributed to the interface-confined Ag nanowire array reacting successively with PtCl62− and AuCl4‒ in the water phase. Optimized surface-Pt-rich Ag11Pt5Au84 nanotrough array exhibits ~2270 and ~2290 mA⋅mgAu+Pt–1 in the mass activity towards methanol and ethanol electrooxidation, respectively, ~3 times better than commercial Pt/C, and shows the improved tolerance towards CO-like carbonaceous intermediates. This work suggests that properly combining the positive catalytic effects of morphology and composition may be a possible avenue to tackle the issue of low-Pt electrocatalyst of DAFC.

Abstract:We report the fabrication of "Pt-on-PdAg" heterogeneous nanocrystals in the form of trigonal/hexagonal plate (THNPs) and explored their applications in electroxidation of methanol (MOR) in alkaline medium. In particular, PdAg polyhedral nanoparticles are prepared in advance, followed by the addition of Pt salts to allow in situ galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) between them, leading to the formation of Pt nano-islands on PdAg particle surface and the transformation of the overall morphology into trigon/hexagon. The deliberately designed Pt-"PdAg alloy" interface arising from the hybrid structure greatly enriches the absorption sites, showing noticeable structural advantages in MOR electrocatalysis. Particularly, the carbon-supported Pt-on-PdAg THNPs exhibit nearly 30-fold increase in specific activity as compared to that of commercial Pt/C, as well as enhanced reaction kinetics and long-term durability. DFT calculations suggest that the reaction of CH 3 OH oxidation mediated by PtAgPd is energetically more favorable compared to the similar reaction promoted by Pt, which rationalizes the experimental observation that PtAgPd shows the improved catalytic performance. The present study offers a feasible route to construct trimetallic nanocrystals with successful interface engineering, and validates their promising use as fuel cell electrocatalyst from both experimental validation and fundamental insights. It may help enlighten the rational design of heterostructured electrocatalysts with regulated multiple active sites.

TiO2 Nanoparticles Promoted Pt/C Catalyst for Ethanol Electro-Oxidation

Abstract:A simple and efficient method to enhance the activity of Pt/C catalysts for direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) by ultrasonically mixing commercial Pt/C catalyst and TiO2 nanoparticles is reported. In this novel composite anode catalyst, the as-prepared TiO2 nanoparticles are dispersed homogeneously in the interspaces of Pt based C nanoparticles, resulting in a great deal of TiO2-Pt-C interfaces, which greatly accelerate the ethanol electro-oxidation reaction. Cyclic voltammetry (CV), CO stripping, chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements confirm that this composite catalyst structure has excellent activity and stability toward ethanol and CO electro-oxidation compared to the pure Pt/C catalyst. Enhanced mass transfer and optimized electronic structure on Pd–Ag nanoparticles embedded in mesoporous carbon for superior electro-oxidation

Abstract:The development of economically viable anode catalysts for the alcohol oxidation reaction (AOR) has been a long-standing challenge in direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs). A series of Pd–Ag nanoparticles embedded in mesoporous carbon were fabricated in this study using a green approach that did not require the use of a surfactant, which exhibited better catalytic properties for AOR. Experiments and DFT calculations reveal that the d-band center of Pd is influenced by both strain and ligand effects, with the ligand effect predominating. The electrochemical studies demonstrated that the composite-optimized Pd–Ag alloy at a Pd/Ag molar ratio of 1:1 was the highest in terms of ethanol oxidation (EOR) and ethylene glycol oxidation (EGOR) catalytic activity. The mass activities of Pd 1 Ag 1 /MC for EOR and EGOR were 7921 mA mg −1 and 11,520 mA mg −1 , respectively, which were 3.77 and 5.3 fold greater than Pd/C. The impressive performance of Pd 1 Ag 1 /MC catalyst could be attributed to the vital roles of the unique mesoporous structure of carbon sphere with abundant self-doping defect and the boosting effect of Ag (benefit from optimized d-band electronic structure and bi-functional mechanism). The present simple method of synthesizing low-cost, easy-to-use, and high-performance catalysts contributes to the exploration of the large-scale practical applications of direct alkaline alcohol fuel cells.

Polysulfide modified PtCu intermetallic nanocatalyst with enrichment realizes efficient electrooxidation ethanol to CO2

Abstract:The main problem faced by ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) includes low activity, poor selectivity, and durability. In the study, we found that polysulfide modified on the surface of PtCu intermetallic (IM)/C can simultaneously enrich hydroxyl and ethanol, which could effectively improve the catalytic activity, CO 2 selectivity, and durability of catalyst. The mass activity and the specific activity of the product in 1 M KOH electrolyte reached 17.83 A·mg Pt −1 and 24.67 mA·cm −2 . The CO 2 selectivity of polysulfide modified product achieved 93.5%, which was 30 folds higher than Pt/C. In addition, the catalyst showed high catalytic stability. The mechanism study demonstrates that the surface modified polysulfide could significantly boost the enrichment effect of ethanol and hydroxyl species, accelerating C–C bond cleavage and CO oxidation.

Efficient C–C bond cleavage in ethanol electrooxidation on porous Pt catalysts

Abstract:For increasing the energy conversion efficiency of ethanol in direct oxidation fuel cells, cleavage of C–C bond to form the final product CO2 is a predominate prerequisite. In this work, we show that high efficiency of C–C bond cleavage in ethanol electrooxidation can be achieved on porous Pt catalysts. The porous Pt films of different roughness factor (ratio of the real surface area to the geometric one) were electrochemically deposited on Au substrates and characterized by SEM, XRD and electrochemical methods. The electrochemical results show that the deposited porous Pt films possess considerable electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of ethanol in acidic medium. In situ FTIR results reveal that the ratio of final product CO2 via efficient C–C bond cleavage to soluble intermediates (acetaldehyde and acetic acid) significantly increases with the increase of surface roughness of the Pt film electrodes. The present results demonstrate that porous Pt catalysts with larger roughness factor can play an important role in efficient utilization of ethanol both as fuel and Pt noble metal in direct ethanol oxidation fuel cells, due to the optimal surface morphology of Pt catalyst.
