Abstract:It is an important task to search for efficient nonlinear optical (NLO) materials due to their potential application in electrooptic devices. Theoretical investigations on the second-order NLO response of ten novel Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes, [Ru(phen)2(bipy)]2+ and [Ru(bphen)2(bipy)]2+, have been performed by density functional theory. Both effects aroused by introducing substitute in bipy group and by varying the ligand from phen to bphen are studied on the second-order NLO response. The introduction of electron-withdrawing/donating group all improves the static first hyperpolarizability (βtot) for [Ru(phen)2(bipy)]2+ derivatives, of which the introduction of strong electron-donating group, vinyl dimethylamine, increases the βtot value from 10 a.u. of unsubstituted complex to 16425 a.u.. However, phen ligand substituted by bphen group only has a slight effect on the βtot value. The researches on electronic structures, UV-Vis absorption spectra, and charge transfer properties were also carried out for further understanding the second-order NLO properties of ten complexes. The frontier orbital energy gap, electron density distribution, charge transfer direction and quantity are the crucial elements impacting the second-order NLO response of complexes. It is considered as an effective method to tune the second-order NLO response of materials through varying their electronic properties. We hope our work will provide some helpful information for designing and synthesizing the cost-effective and high-performance NLO materials.
