Abstract:The influence of different preparation methods on the non-oxidative aromatization of Methane-Propane over Zn/HZSM-5 was investigated,such as the conversion of propane,selectivity of BTX,and the carbon species after reaction.Under 823 K and atmosphere pressure with space velocity 600 h-1 and CH4/C3H8(molar ratio)=5∶1,the propane conversion and the aromatics selectivity were up to 99.93 % and 80.29% over the catalysts.There are at least two different carbon species on the surface of Zn/HZSM-5 catalysts after CH4-C3H8 aromatization reactions,the CHx active intermediate can be removed in H2 atmosphere in high temperature while the graphite can only be eliminated in O2 atmosphere.The coke and the surface acid of the catalysts were characterized by UV-Raman,TPO/TPH(H2-TPSR),NH3-TPD and TG..

Abstract:Chemical equilibria of propane aromatization under both unrestricted coke-formation and coke-free operating conditions were studied. In both cases, propane conversions were nearly complete. The aromatics selectivity was observed to be 46% at a temperature of 823 K (1 bar) under coke-free operating conditions. Application of hydrogen and steam as coke-removing agents was also studied. Under coke-free operation, the presence of low level of water in the feed favors propane methanation, whereas higher levels of water enhance propane steam reforming. Methane selectivity was found to attain a maximum at H2O/C3H8 molar ratio equal to 0.75 (823 K, 1 bar). The outcomes of the present study imply that the products selectivity has to be controlled kinetically and that the catalyst formulation should be aimed at minimization of coke formation and carbon-carbon bond breakage activity.

Abstract:Herein, the thermodynamics and kinetics for the coupling aromatization of propane and methanol and effects of reaction conditions are systematically investigated on H-ZSM-5. It is shown that aromatization is significantly enhanced along with effective inhibition of coking on catalyst at reaction conditions of 440 °C, P (propane and methanol) = 80 kPa, WHSV CH2 = 2.1 h −1 and methanol/propane = 0.7 (mol/mol) as a result of alteration of propane conversion mechanism from monomolecular protolytic pathway to bimolecular hydrogen transfer pathway, which is substantiated by the variation of apparent activation energy of propane conversion and the dependence of apparent reaction order on the reaction temperature and framework aluminum (acid) content in H-ZSM-5. In addition, the effects of different reactive intermediates generated from methanol on the propane activation were systematically analyzed in detail from a kinetic point of view for the first time.

Abstract:The co-aromatization of methane with propane is investigated using Zn/HZSM-5 as the catalyst at 400 degrees C. The presence of methane has a pronounced effect on the product distribution in terms of improved formation of phenyl rings and substitution groups of aromatic species. Isotopic labeling and solid-state NMR spectroscopy studies reveal that the favored site for methane incorporation varies at different stages along the co-aromatization reaction, from the benzylic sites at the initial stage to the phenyl rings and then substitution groups as the reaction proceeds. SIMS spectroscopy of the involved reaction intermediates suggests the formation of C-4 species over the Zn sites that are bonding to the oxygen atoms of the zeolite framework, which is supported by theoretical calculations. The interaction between Zn species and the zeolite framework is also confirmed by XAS and changes in coordination environments are identified through XANES and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The redistribution of Zn during the reaction is observed on the surface of the zeolite support. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy images show that Zn is rich in the inner pores compared with the external surface of the catalyst particles in the pristine catalysts. XANES and XPS spectra demonstrate that the Zn concentration increases on the external surface after the reaction, a conclusion that is further supported by the theoretical study. The Zn redistribution might be among the reasons for methane participation pathway alternation during the co-aromatization, since the Zn species located within the inner pores and on the external surface might prefer to catalyze the methane incorporation to the phenyl rings and substitution groups of the formed aromatics, respectively.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of methane into higher hydrocarbons in the absence of oxygen using propane as a co-reactant over the xCu-6% Zn/HZSM-5 (x = 0 similar to 0.9%) catalyst was investigated. It was found that methane could be activated and transferred into higher hydrocarbons and aromatics with a methane conversion of 36% and an aromatics selectivity of 85.7% at 600 degreesC and methane/propane molar ratio of 1.0. The effects of methane/propane molar ratio on the methane and propane conversion and product distribution were studied in details. There was a positive relationship between the methane activation and aromatics production. Incorporation of methane into aromatics was confirmed by mass spectral analysis of aromatics products in the aromatization of isotope-labeled (CH4)-C-13 in the presence of propane, in which significant C-13 enrichment in C6H6+, C7H8+ and C8H10+ fragments was found.

Abstract:The effects of carbon chain length of alcohol and reaction temperature on catalytic conversion of alcohols to produce aromatics over HZSM-5 were studied in a micro fixed-bed reactor coupled directly to GC/MS system.The results showed that the carbon chain length of alcohol had a significant effect on the product distribution.At 400℃,with the increase of carbon chain length of alcohol,the yield of aromatics increased firstly up to the maximum of 39.6％ (1-propanol),then decreased and finally stabilized at a lower yield.As the temperature increased,the products distributions for methanol,ethanol,1-propanol showed the same tendency,and the yields of aromatics increased firstly,then decreased and the maximum values reached 26.0％,36.5％ and 42.5％ at 500℃ respectively.As the temperature increased,however,the yield of CO,CO2 and olefins increased gradually while the total yield of hydrocarbons decreased.Higher temperature helped the conversion of larger aromatics to lighter aromatics,which contributed to the higher selectivity for benzene and toluene.Finally,the reaction mechanism of alcohol aromatization was discussed by the combination of in-situ FTIR and experimental results.It is supposed that the light olefins and ethers were produced by dehydration of short carbon chain alcohols,while long carbon chain olefins were produced by polymerization of the light olefins or direct dehydration of long carbon chain alcohols.The obtained long carbon chain olefins were then converted into cycloalkanes by cyclization.At last,aromatics were formed by dehydrogenation-aromatization or intermolecular hydrogen transfer of the cycloalkanes.

Abstract:The catalytic conversions of CH3Br into aromatics over HZSM-5, CuO/HZSM-5, ZnO/HZSM-5 and CuO-ZnO/HZSM-5 were investigated to study the synergistic effect of CuO and ZnO. The results showed that the yield of aromatics decreased in the order of 2%CuO-3%ZnO/HZSM-5 (27.4%)>5%CuO/HZSM-5 (19.3%)>HZSM-5 (14.4%)>5%ZnO/HZSM-5 (6.0%) at 360°C under the same condition, and the bimetallic 2%CuO-3%ZnO/HZSM-5 gave 33.0% aromatic yield at 380°C. The addition of ZnO promoted the catalytic activity of CuO in CH3Br aromatization to aromatics. The higher strong acidity significantly improved the hydrogen-transfer and aromatization reaction, increasing the yield of aromatics.

Abstract:C-13 MAS NMR has been performed in situ-to investigate the activation of C-13 labeled propane under a mild condition over Ga-modified H-ZSM-5 catalysts prepared via different methods. The results indicate that the ion-exchanged and/or its related Ga species are the highly active catalytic components, while impregnated Ga species is not the active species for propane activation at 573 K.

Abstract:The non-oxidative conversion of methane (C-1) into aromatic hydrocarbons by using propane (C-3) as co-reactant over x%Mo+6%Zn/HZSM-5 catalysts was studied. C, conversion was very high, reaching 29%-35%. Selectivity of aromatic products reaches above 80% at 873 K and GHSV=3 L/(g (.) h) with n(C-1)/n(C-3)=1.0. The excellent conversion of C-1 ( 34.8%) was obtained over 0.7%Mo+6%Zn/HZSM-5 catalyst at 873 K and n(C-1)/n(C-3)=1.0. The effects of time-on-stream and n(C-1)/n(C-3) on C-1 and C-3 conversion and the products distribution were analyzed in order to obtain information about C-1 incorporation into the aromatic products and the evolution of different species. C, incorporation was conclusively confirmed by the mass spectral analyses of aromatic products produced in a run with (CH4)-C-13, which shows a significant C-13 enrichment in the C6H6+, C7H8+ and C8H10+ fragments. The methane activation could result from its hydrogen-transfer reaction with alkenes. This process was hoped to provide a novel route for the chemical utilization of natural gas and refinery gas.

Abstract:The ZnO/HZSM-5 catalyst for propane aromatization was prepared by mechanically mixing ZnO with HZSM-5. XRD and TEM investigations demonstrated that ZnO located on the external surface of the zeolite crystals can migrate from outside to inside of the channels during calcination, and zinc species are highly dispersed. The migration of zinc species was confirmed by a back-exchange experiment in which the zinc-containing samples were treated by a dilute hydrochloric acid solution, and the experimental results showed that the interaction between zinc species and zeolite surface occurred. The catalyst was characterized. by XPS and IR spectroscopy. It can be seen that only small part of ZnO in the ZnO/HZSM-5 catalyst reacts with the protons of HZSM-5 Bronsted acid sites through solid state ion exchange. The conversion of propane to aromatics over the ZnO/HZSM-5 catalyst was evaluated in a fixed-bed continuous flow reactor and the results indicated that the aromatic selectivity can be improved significantly by introducing promoter zinc by mechanically mixing ZnO with HZSM-5.
Aromatization of Methane by Using Propane As Co-Reactant over Cobalt and Zinc-Impregnated HZSM-5 Catalysts

Abstract:The activities of the cobalt and zinc-impregnated HZSM-5 catalysts to the non-oxidative conversion of propane (C3) and methane (C1) into aromatic hydrocarbons were evaluated using a fixed-bed microreactor. C1 conversion reached 36.7% and the selectivity of aromatic products reached above 88.7% at atmospheric pressure, weight (hourly) space velocity (WHSV) 1.6 g h−1/(g cat)−1 and 873 K. The influence of the acidity and the ratio of cobalt in the catalyst on the conversion of methane and propane was evaluated. C1 incorporation was conclusively confirmed by the mass spectral analyses of aromatic products produced in a run with 13CH4 which shows a significant 13C enrichment in the C6H6+, C7H8+ and C8H10+ fragments. The methane activation could result from its hydrogen-transfer reaction with alkenes. These catalysts were thoroughly characterized using XRD, N2 adsorption measurements, TPD of NH3, and FT-IR. The results showed that the activation of methane in low temperature was due to existence of propane. The acidic changes and micropore area of the catalyst severely affected aromatization, and resulted in drastic modifications in product distribution. From this work, we found that only a small fraction of tetrahedral framework aluminum, which corresponds to the Bronsted acid sites, is sufficient to accomplish the aromatization of the intermediates in methane and propane aromatic reaction, while the superfluous strong Bronsted acid sites, which can be decreased by adding Co and Zn, are showed to be related with the aromatic carbonaceous deposits on the catalysts. The density of acidic site and the strength of strong acid decreased when the concentration of Co and Zn in the catalyst increased. Therefore, a much higher benzene yield and a longer durability of the catalysts are obtained when compared with the conventional HZSM-5 catalysts.

Abstract:Zinc-promoted (containing 2%)HZSM-5 catalysts were prepared by ion exchange (Zn/HZSM-5) as well as by physical mixing of ZnO with HZSM-5 (ZnO/HZSM-5). Two types of zinc species were recognized by XPS spectra, which have different electronic binding energy shift on Zn(2p), i.e. ΔEb= Eb(2p3/2) - Eb(2p1/2), and ΔEb = 1. 46 eV of main zinc species in Zn/HZSM-5 is greater than that in ZnO/HZSM-5. It is believed that the former corresponds to [Zn(OH)]+ most likely located at zeolitic exchange positions and the latter to ZnO. After treatment of hydrogen 20h at 560 °C , ΔEbof Zn/HZSM-5 was slightly reduced and the zinc content decreased from 2. 12% to 1. 67%. Results show that the transportation between [Zn(OH)]+ and ZnO could be caused at higher temperatures by the reversible solid-state reaction of zinc species with zeolitic proton acid. The reactivity of propane converting to aromatics over catalysts was evaluated and the acidity of catalysts was measured by means of NH3-TPD. The results show that different zinc species on catalysts play different roles in propane aromatization.

Abstract:The aromatization of light alkane is an important process for increasing the aromatic production and utilization efficiency of light alkane resources simultaneously. Herein, Ga-modified HZSM-5 catalysts were prepared and investigated by a series of characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption, and NH3 temperature-programmed desorption to study their physicochemical properties. The catalytic performance in propane aromatization was also tested. Importantly, the structure-activity relationship, reaction pathway, and coke formation mechanism in propane aromatization were systematically explored. It was found that different Ga introduction methods would affect the amounts of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites, and Ga-HZSM-5 prepared by the hydrothermal method exhibited higher amounts of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites but a lower B/L ratio. As a result, Ga-HZSM-5 showed higher propane conversion and benzene, toluene, and xylene yield compared with that of Ga2O3/HZSM-5. The propane aromatization reaction pathway indicated that propane dehydrogenation to propene was a crucial step for aromatic formation. The increase of the Lewis acid density in Ga-HZSM-5 can effectively improve the dehydrogenation rate and promote the aromatization reaction. Furthermore, the formation of coke species was studied by thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry and Raman approaches, the results of which indicated that the graphitization degree of coke formed over spent Ga-HZSM-5 is lower, resulting in enhanced anticoking stability.

Abstract:The effect of preparation method. Mo content, pretreatment conditions, space velocity, reaction temperature on the preformance of methane aromatization under oxygen-free conditions over HZSM-5 supported Mo catalyst has been studied, the effect of carbon deposition on catalyst after reaction and regeneration by carbon burning with O2 was investigated. It was found that the initial activity of catalysts prepared by grinding technique was higher than that of catalysts prepared by impregnating technique, but the activity of the former decreased quickly with reaction time increased, and decreased obviously after regeneration, while the activity of the latter was similar to that of fresh catalysts. The catalyst with Mo content of 3. 5%��4. 0% showed the best aromatization activity. Decreasing space velocity and increasing reaction temperature improved the aromatization activity. With reaction time increased, the selectivity for ethylene enhanced while selectivity for benzene decreased. Furthermore, XPS results suggested that the most of Mo6+ in the catalysts prepared by impregnating method dispersed in the framework of HZSM-5 zeolite and those of grinding method dispersed on the surface of HZSM-5 zeolite, the carbon content on the catalyst surface increased rapidly, and Mo6+ in the ground catalysts was reduced to Mo0 after reaction for 4 h. On the basis of these results, it is proposed that molybdena carbene with configuration of MoO3 = CH2 is an initial product of methane aromatization reaction.

Abstract:Re/HZSM-5 showed higher activity toward dehydrogenation and aromatization compared with HZSM-5 and Ga/HZSM-5 catalyst. Carbon dioxide largely inhibited the propane transformation, while methane improved the selectivity of aromatic products and inhibited the decomposition of propane.
Stability of Zn/HZSM-5 Catalysts in Reaction Regeneration Process of Propane Aromatization

Abstract:The stability of Zn/HZSM 5 prepared by ion exchange and impregnation techniques was investigated. The catalyst reactivity for converting propane to aromatics was tested with different times on stream. The acidity and the amount of coke of the catalysts after aromatization reaction were determined by NH3 TPD and TG, and the patterns of the coking catalysts were observed by TEM. The results show the catalyst deactivation is mainly due to coke deposition. The regeneration process was carried out in air at 520℃. The activity and selectivity of the regenerated catalysts were tested after several cycles of deactivation regeneration. It was found that after the first cycle, the activity decreased, but selectivity increased a little and the rate of deactivation clearly decreased. After the second cycle, the activity, selectivity and rate of deactivation of the catalyst remained almost unchanged. The experiments also show that the catalysts zinc content decreased very little over three cycles of deactivation regeneration.

Abstract:The non-oxidative aromatization of mixed CH4 with C3H8 over La-promoted Zn/HZSM-5 catalysts was studied in a fixed-bed reactor at 823 K with space velocity 600 h−1 and CH4/C3H8 (mol ratio)=5:1. The propane conversion and the aromatic selectivities were up to 99% and 60% over the catalyst respectively, while methane conversion had an induction period with the highest conversion of 30%. The structure and surface acidity of the catalysts were characterized by XRD, NH3-TPD and TG-DTA. The influences of reaction and regenerative conditions on the activity and selectivity were also investigated.

Abstract:The interaction between Mo species and a conventionally microsized and particularly nanosized HZSM-5 support was studied by high-resolution multinuclear solid-state NMR techniques. As proved by 27Al and 29Si MAS as well as CP/MAS NMR investigations, this interaction was so strong that the framework aluminum of both microsized and nanosized HZSM-5 zeolites could be extracted. With increasing Mo loading, more nonframework aluminum, resonanced at ca. 30 ppm, appeared in the 27Al MAS NMR spectrum of the Mo-loaded nanosized HZSM-5 catalyst. Meanwhile, this strong interaction led to the formation of more new Al2(MoO4)3 crystallines on the nanosized HZSM-5 support than on the microsized HZSM-5 support. The appearance of Al2(MoO4)3 crystallines resulted in fewer active catalysts for the methane dehyro-aromatization. The results of 1H MAS NMR using perfluorotributyl amine as a probe molecule demonstrated that Mo species preferentially reacted with the silanols and nonframework AlOH on the external surface of microsized and nanosized HZSM-5 zeolites. In addition, impregnated Mo species remained predominantly on the external surface of the nanosized HZSM-5 zeolite, although there was a possibility that they might migrate into the lattice channels of the microsized HZSM-5 zeolite. The migration of some Mo species into the zeolite channels might be beneficial for the conversion of methane to aromatics in the absence of oxygen.
