Abstract:The paper deals with the dental characteristics of three species of Rhinopithecus, vh. R. bieti, R. brelichi and R. roxellanae in China. The study was being based on only 10 specimens. The main conclusions are as follows.1. The dental formula is 2.1.2.3/ 2.1.2.3 in the permanent teeth, but 2.1.2.0/2.1.2.0 in decidu-ous. It seems that among all adult specimens examined in Rhinopithecus the canine dentes exhibit more striking sexual dimorphism than that of the some genera in Colobidae.2. The common size rule of the dentition in three species is as follows: I1I2; P3 P4; P3P4; M1M3M3; M1M2M3. In R. bieti, however, upper molars are somewhat different (M1M2M3) due to the presence of accessory cusps on side of Ml3. Upper incisors are heteromorphic. There are significant differences between I1 and I2 in shape and size. I1 is spatulate, while I2 is peg-like. Lower incisors are smaller than upper ones in Rhinopithecus. In R. brelichi, I1 possesses lingual tubercles that are not present in both R. roxellanae and R. bieti. The groove, lingual cingulum and tubercle on I2 in the males are more marked than those in the females. There are only superficial grooves on I1-2. The grooves, lingual cingula and tubercles on I1 _2 in the male of brelicki are most distinct among Rhinopithecus.4. P3 has two cusps which have been displaced by three ones in a sample of brelichi. The lingual cingulum on P3 in both bieti and roxellanae is more marked than that in breli- chi.5. The numbers of cusps of M3 vary greatly. There are seven cusps in bieti, four in-the male specimens and five in the female of brelichi, four in roxellanae. M3 in both roxella-nae and bieti has a tuberculum sextum which is not present on M3 in brelichi.6. M3 of some samples in roxellanae has tuberculum intermedium which is not present on M2 in both bieti and brelichi. When compared with most genera in Cercopitheddea, it shows that the Snub-nosed Monkeys in our country are more similar to Pygathrix,. Presbytis, Nasalis and Colabus in Colobidae than the other genera of Cercopithecidae.
