Abstract:Abstract Transition metal sulfides have been widely used as anode electrodes of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity and low price. However, problems of huge volume expansion and poor conductivity during charging and discharging have been emerged. Herein, we design a N, C-co-doped, nano-sized, and hollow carbon-coated ZnS (ZnS-NC@C) composite using the advantages of metal organic framework (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8) structure and resorcinol-formaldehyde coating. When applied as anodes of LIBs and SIBs, it displays a high reversible capacity of 748 and 150.9 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at the current density of 1.0 A g −1 , respectively. This work could provide a promising strategy for enhancing the performance of transition metal sulfides for potential applications in LIBs and SIBs.

Abstract:In this work, the polyhedral 2 (@SiO2) nanocubes are designed by employing the ZIF-8 as template for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) anode. The nanostructures of 2 can be tunneled by controlling the hydrolysis durations of TEOS. As a result, the @SiO2 composite is obtained by a subsequent high temperature carbonization treatment on 2. When used as anode for LIBs, it exhibits high initial discharge capacity of 863.6 mAh g−1 with Coulombic efficiency of 85% at the current density of 0.1 A g−1. Further, the reversible capacity stabilizes at 723 mAh g−1 after 150 cycles. Even the current density is increased to 1.0 A g−1, a highly reversible capacity of 321.2 mAh g−1 can be enabled after 800 cycles, demonstrating the superior rate and long cycling capability. Remarkably, the density functional theory calculation realizes that the lithium storage capacity of @SiO2 is significantly enhanced by the strong interfacial interaction between the HC and the SiO2. Besides, the novel nanostructure of @SiO2 not only promotes the kinetics for lithiation/de-lithiation and diffusion process, but also relieves the volume expansion, leading to high anode performance.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) shows great potential for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high theoretical capacity and low working potential. However, its intrinsic low electronic conductivity and large volume expansion during lithiation result in dramatic capacity fading and poor rate capability. Herein, a dual-confinement strategy is proposed for improving the lithium storage properties of Si by uniformly anchoring Si nanoparticles within a MXene/ZIF-8 derived carbon framework. In the Si/MXene@C composite, Si nanoparticles tightly bond with MXene and carbon through the formed interfacial Si-O-Ti and Si-C bonds, respectively, which is beneficial for alleviating the volume expansion of Si and promoting the interfacial charge transfer. Therefore, the Si/MXene@C composite exhibits excellent lithium storage performances in terms of high capacity (1006.1 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1), stable cycle performance (862.9 mAh g-1 after 150 cycles at 100 mA g-1), and superior rate capability (233.3 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1), indicating its promising potential as an anode material for next-generation high-performance LIBs.
Hollow Porous SiO 2 Nanocubes with Enhanced Lithium Storage Properties

Abstract:The high theoretical capacity and low discharge potential of silicon have attracted much attention on Si-based anodes. Herein, hollow porous SiO2 nanocubes have been prepared via a two-step hard-template process and evaluated as electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The hollow porous SiO2 nanocubes exhibited a reversible capacity of 919 mAh/g over 30 cycles. The excellent property could be attributed to the unique hollow nanostructure with large volume interior and numerous crevices in the shell, which could accommodate the volume change and alleviate the structural strain during Li ions insertion and extraction, as well as allow rapid access of Li ions during charge/discharge cycling. It is found that the formation of irreversible or reversible lithium silicates in the anodes determines the capacity of a deep-cycle battery, fast transportation of Li ions in hollow porous SiO2 nanocubes is preferred to form Li2O and Si, contributing to the high reversible capacity. The hollow porous SiO2 nanocubes have great potential applications for Li-ion batteries due to their remarkable electrochemical performance and low cost.
An interconnected and scalable hollow Si-C nanospheres/graphite composite for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Silicon (Si) anode is the most promising alternative for next generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to large theoretical capacity, low working voltage and abundant natural resources. However, tremendous volume change of Si during the (de)lithiation processes causes repetitive formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers, loss of electrical contact and electrodes pulverization, limiting its commercial application. Herein, we fabricate an interconnected hollow Si-C nanospheres/graphite composite via a facile and scalable approach. Notably, hollow Si-C nanospheres and graphite are homogeneously combined by using the surfactants as surface modifiers of graphite and introducing carbon dioxide (CO2) into magnesiothermic reduction reaction, resulting in the enhanced compatibility between hollow Si-C nanospheres and graphite, and the well-established electrical conductive network. The resultant Si-C nanospheres/graphite composite anode with carbon content of 59 wt% delivers a large reversible specific capacity of 662 mAh g−1 and a high capacity retention of 65.7% at 0.5 A g−1 after 200 cycles. Such excellent rate performance and superior cycling performance are attributed to high electrical conductivity and buffering effect of graphite, superior compatibility between hollow Si-C spheres and graphite, uniform distribution of both Si-C nanospheres with a unique hollow architecture and graphite flakes inside the composites and well-established interconnected electrical conductive carbon networks, which can effectively alleviate Si volume expansion and maintain good electrical contact during cycling. This strategy provides insights into designing Si-based anodes for practical LIBs.

Abstract:ZIF-67 derived nitrogen and cobalt doped carbon enfolded silicon (C@Si) nanoparticles anchored on the 2D MXene layers was constructed for boosting lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The heterostructure anode demonstrates a high initial discharge capacity of 3021 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1, retaining outstanding cycling stability with a reversible capacity of 520 mAh g−1 at 2000 mA/g with the coulombic efficiency remained above 97% after 500 cycles. The introduced Ti3C2 nanosheets and the cobalt doped carbon can not only contribute the interfacial transfer of Li+ and electron, but also buffer the volume expansion of Si.

Abstract:Silicon possesses a high theoretical specific capacity and is a promising high-performance anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, it shows a poor cycling performance because of volume expansion. A hollow structure can improve Si cycling performance, and the template method is one of the most common methods for hollow micro/nanosphere preparation. A polystyrene (PS) microsphere has the advantages of having a uniform and controllable particle size, easy modification, and high stability, thus being an ideal template for preparing hollow structure material. Herein, PS microspheres are used as templates to obtain hollow silica spheres, and then obtain hollow silicon spheres with an inner pore diameter of ~50 nm by a magnesium thermal reduction method. Lithium-ion battery anode material is obtained using carbon nanotubes supporting hollow silicon spheres (Si-CNTs). Si-CNTs exhibit excellent cycling performance (1188 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles) and excellent rate capability (484 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1). Hollow porous Si-CNTs show great potential, providing a promising idea for solving the volume expansion problem of Si.

Saclike-silicon nanoparticles anchored in ZIF-8 derived spongy matrix as high-performance anode for lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:The carbon layer with good electrical conductivity and outstanding mechanical stability are essential in designing high-performance silicon/carbon (Si/C) anodes to replace the commercial graphite in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In terms of solving the two inherent defects of poor conductivity and big volume change of silicon, we fabricate a spongy carbon matrix derived from ZIF-8 to anchor saclike silicon synthesized by molten salt magnesiothermic reduction method. This spongy matrix can anchor saclike silicon to provide a stable reaction interface and support fast electronic transmission. At the same time, buffer space in saclike Si nanoparticles and spongy matrix can synergistically accommodate the volume change of Si to maintain the integrity of the electrode. The resulting composite with a high Si content of 77.58% exhibits good capacities of 1448 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 and 848 mAh g-1 at 4 A g-1 after 500 cycles. High initial coulombic efficiency of 84% at 0.2 A g-1 is also exhibited in the first three activation cycles. Therefore, this novel multifunctional N-doped spongy matrix can supply multifaceted benefits in accommodation of volumetric variation, enhancement of conductivity, and integrity of structure during cycling.
In Situ Synthesis of a Si/CNTs/C Composite by Directly Reacting Magnesium Silicide with Lithium Carbonate for Enhanced Lithium Storage Capability

Abstract:Silicon is considered as an ideal anode material for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its high specific capacity, low lithiation potential, and high natural abundance. However, its potential application is greatly restricted by poor electrical conductivity and large volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation processes. Herein, a novel solid-state reaction route is developed to synthesize a silicon/carbon nanotubes/carbon (Si/CNTs/C) composite by directly reacting magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) with lithium carbonate (Li2CO3). This method realizes synchronous formation of Si, CNTs, and amorphous carbon with a good interfacial configuration. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals that MgO may be responsible for the in situ growth of CNTs during the chemical reaction process. The crystalline Si particles are encapsulated by CNTs and the amorphous carbon matrix, which not only accommodates the volume expansion of Si but also enhances the integral electronic conductivity. Consequently, the Si/CNTs/C composite exhibits a high reversible capacity (702 mA h g–1 at 0.2 A g–1), excellent rate performance (420 mA h g–1 at 5 A g–1), and long cycling life (over 1500 cycles) when used as an anode for LIBs. Notably, this research might provide a new strategy for large-scale synthesis and utilization of Si/C composites in high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:Transition metal chalcogenides represent a class of the most promising alternative electrode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to their high theoretical capacities. However, they suffer from large volume expansion, particle agglomeration, and low conductivity during charge/discharge processes, leading to unsatisfactory energy storage performance. In order to address these issues, we rationally designed three-dimensional (3D) hybrid composites consisting of ZnSe nanodots uniformly confined within a N-doped porous carbon network (ZnSe ND@N-PC) obtained via a convenient pyrolysis process. When used as anodes for LIBs, the composites exhibited outstanding electrochemical performance, with a high reversible capacity (1,134 mA·h·g−1 at a current density of 600 mA·g−1 after 500 cycles) and excellent rate capability (696 and 474 mA·h·g−1 at current densities of 6.4 and 12.8 A·g−1, respectively). The significantly improved lithium storage performance can be attributed to the 3D architecture of the hybrid composites, which not only mitigated the internal mechanical stress induced by the volume change and formed a 3D conductive network during cycling, but also provided a large reactive area and reduced the lithium diffusion distance. The strategy reported here may open a new avenue for the design of other multifunctional composites towards high-performance energy storage devices.

Abstract:The utilization of kerf-loss silicon (KL-Si) waste as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) faces limitations of the rapid structural degradation during repeated charging/discharging. To overcome this limitation, 3D carbon-coated Si is constructed to buffer the Si volume expansion caused by the lithiation, while simultaneously forming a robust conductive network. Meanwhile, the well-dispersed porous carbon (C) shell, doped with suitable heteroatoms, plays a pivotal role in facilitating rapid ion transfer rates. In addition, a cobalt (Co) and nitrogen (N)-doped C shell is employed to encapsulate KL-Si, aimed at enhancing its lithium (Li) storage performances. The electrochemical performance of KL-Si@C-ZIF/N/Co composites, synthesized through the encapsulation of KL-Si with a metal-organic framework (MOF) structure (ZIF-90) followed by heat treatment. The resulting composites exhibit an outstanding reversible capacity of 981 mAh g −1 and an impressive capacity retention of 81.9% at 2 A g −1 even after 350 cycles. This paper presents a promising method for maximizing the value-added utilization of KL-Si and reveals the advantages of MOF-derived porous C shell in accommodating the inherent volume expansion of Si-based anodes.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is considered as the most likely choice for the high-capacity lithium-ion batteries owing to its ultrahigh theoretical capacity (4200 mA h g-1) being over 10 times than that of traditional graphite anode materials (372 mA h g-1). However, its widespread application is limited by problems such as a large volume expansion and low electrical conductivity. Herein, we design a hollow nitrogen-doped carbon-coated silicon (Si@Co-HNC) composite in a water-based system via a synergistic protecting-etching strategy of tannic acid. The prepared Si@Co-HNC composite can effectively mitigate the volume change of silicon and improve the electrical conductivity. Moreover, the abundant voids inside the carbon layer and the porous carbon layer accelerate the transport of electrons and lithium ions, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance. The reversible discharge capacity of 1205 mA h g-1 can be retained after 120 cycles at a current density of 0.5 A g-1. In particular, the discharge capacity can be maintained at 1066 mA h g-1 after 300 cycles at a high current density of 1 A g-1. This study provides a new strategy for the design of Si-based anode materials with excellent electrical conductivity and structural stability.

Abstract:Silicon has been deemed to be one of the most prospective anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, low lithiation potential, and bountiful resources. However, its industrial application can still be impeded by its unsatisfied electrochemical performance, especially poor cycling performance caused by larger volume expansion (about 300%). Herein, we synthesize the silicon-based composites by embedding nano-silicon in Co-based metal–organic frameworks derived nitrogen-doped carbon/cobalt/Co-catalyzed carbon nanotubes porous framework (/Co/CNTs). In this architecture, the high conductivity NC/Co/CNTs framework with stable structure owing to the existence of Co can not only significantly improve the electrical conductivity to improve the reaction activity of Si, but also effectively buffer the volume expansion during electrochemical reaction. Hence, the advanced /Co/CNTs exhibits a high reversible specific capacity (895 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1) and excellent cycling performance (758 mAh g−1 after 800 cycles at 1 A g−1). Insight into the kinetics reveals that capacitive charge-storage mechanism plays an important role in boosting Li+ storage beneficial from the high specific surface area and accelerated charge transfer. This work propounds a simple route to prepare the Si/C hybrids with improved electrochemical performances for being of great application potential towards lithium-ion batteries anode.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) anode has great potential for use in practical Li-ion batteries due to large specific capacity beyond that of conventional graphite. The main challenges for Si are large volume changes (~400%) during (de)alloying with lithium caused material cracking and pulverization, instability of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer and electric contact loss. Herein, we demonstrate a novel interconnected hollow Si/C nanospheres with thin shells consisting of Si crystals and highly wrinkled amorphous carbon layers synthesized by introducing carbon dioxide (CO2) as a green carbon source in magnesiotherimic reduction to accelerate the commercialized application of Si-based anodes. Interconnected carbon networks in the Si intervals and MgO as cores generate simultaneously via the reaction between CO2 and excess Mg vapor. Additionally, hollow structure can be realized after the removal of in-situ generated MgO templates by acid etching. Unique interconnected Si/C hybrid delivers a high capacity, impressive cycling performance and good Coulombic efficiency, benefiting from the improved Li+ ions transportation and electron transfer kinetics and the volume butter effects of hollow architecture. In particular, such new synthetic route is low-cost and easily scaled up, which probably facilitates the commercial application of Si/C hybrids for high energy Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Low-cost Si-based anode materials with excellent electrochemical lithium storage present attractive prospects for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, porous Si-Cu3Si-Cu microsphere@C composites are designed and prepared by means of an etching/electroless deposition and subsequent carbon coating. The composites show a core-shell structure, with a porous Si/Cu microsphere core surrounded by the N-doped carbon shell. The Cu and Cu3Si nanoparticles are embedded inside porous silicon microspheres, forming the porous Si/Cu microsphere core. The microstructure and lithium storage performance of porous Si-Cu3Si-Cu microsphere@C composites can be effectively tuned by changing electroless deposition time. The Si-Cu3Si-Cu microsphere@C composite prepared with 12 min electroless deposition delivers a reversible capacity of 627 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 2 A g(-1), showing an enhanced lithium storage ability. The superior lithium storage performance of the Si-Cu3Si-Cu microsphere@C composite can be ascribed to the improved electronic conductivity, enhanced mechanical stability, and better buffering against the large volume change in the repeated lithiation/delithiation processes.

Abstract:Silicon‐based materials are promising lithium‐ion battery (LIB) anodes owing to their natural abundance and high capacity. However, their practical application is restricted by the poor electrical conductivity and large volume expansion. Herein, we successfully construct carbon coated porous hollow silicon microspheres (Si‐40@C) as LIB anode materials, which are derived from the acid etching of commercial AlSi alloy with subsequent chemical vapor deposition carbon coating. The porous hollow structure of Si‐40@C buffers the volume variation and promotes the transportation of Li+; the carbon coating enhances the overall conductivity as well as structural stability. The as‐prepared Si‐40@C porous hollow microspheres deliver a high reversible capacity (2029 mAh g‐1 at 0.2 A g‐1), good cyclability (1668 mAh g‐1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g‐1), and an ideal rate capability (1200 mAh g‐1 at 10 A g‐1).

Abstract:Constructing hybrid hollow composites based on metal chalcogenides and nanocarbon materials is of great interests for electrochemical energy storage applications. In this work, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-engaged template strategy is developed to mediate the in-situ formation of ultrafine ZnS nanorods rooted in the hollow carbon polyhedra (denoted as ZnS NR@HCP). The synthesis is realized through a simultaneous carbonization and sulfidation of Zn-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) template at elevated temperatures. The as-prepared hybrid hollow composites exhibit a highly porous and robust structure with intimate coupling between ZnS nanorods and carbon supports, which provides facile ion and electron transport pathways as well as high mechanical stability. When evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, these unique ZnS NR@HCP architectures manifest excellent lithium-storage performance in terms of ultrahigh reversible specific capacity (840 mAh g(-1) after 300 cycles at 600 mA g(-1)) and exceptional rate capability (1388, 1063, 962, 824 and 608 mAh g(-1) at 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600 mA g(-1)). High-performance Self-Organized Si Nanocomposite Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Silicon is being investigated extensively as an anodic material for next-generation lithium ion batteries for portable energy storage and electric vehicles. However, the large changes in volume during cycling lead to the breakdown of the conductive network in Si anodes and the formation of an unstable solid-electrolyte interface, resulting in capacity fading. Here, we demonstrate nanoparticles with a Si@Mn22.6Si5.4C4@C double-shell structure and the formation of self-organized Si-Mn-C nanocomposite anodes during the lithiation/delithiation process. The anode consists of amorphous Si particles less than 10 nm in diameter and separated by an interconnected conductive/buffer network, which exhibits excellent charge transfer kinetics and charge/discharge performances. A stable specific capacity of 1100 mAhg(-1) at 100 m.A.g(-1) and a coulombic efficiency of 99.2% after 30 cycles are achieved. Additionally, a rate capacity of 343 mAh.g(-1) and a coulombic efficiency of 99.4% at 12000 mA.g(-1) are also attainable. Owing to its simplicity and applicability, this strategy for improving electrode performance paves a way for the development of high-performance Si-based anodic materials for lithium ion batteries.
