Wastewater: a New Resource for the War Against Illicit Drugs

Abstract:Despite the tremendous efforts by the international community in the past three decades, drug abuse remains a serious global threat and calls for science-based evaluation of the existing drug policies that are widely deemed ineffective. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a new but fast-developing methodology that provides objective and near real-time information on drug abuse. In the past decade, this approach has been applied in many countries in Europe, North America, Oceania, and Asia. In particular, wastewater-based epidemiology studies in China provided quantitative evidence on the impact of recent antidrug campaigns and initiatives, demonstrating their potential in supporting drug policy making and evaluations. This approach promises to facilitate the lengthy and tense negotiations on drug issues among UN member states and boost the war against illicit drugs.
