Abstract:This study investigated the effects of surface functional groups, cation exchange capacity (CEC), surface charge, sesquioxides and specific surface area (SSA) of three soil clay fractions (SCFs) (kaolinite–illite, smectite and allophane) on the retention of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in soils. Physico-chemical properties of the SCFs before and after removing native carbon and/or sesquioxides were characterised, and the DOC adsorption–desorption tests were conducted by a batch method. Native organic carbon (OC)/sesquioxide removal treatments led to a small change in the CEC values of kaolinite–illite, but significant changes in those of smectite and allophane. The net negative surface charge increased in all samples with an increase in pH indicating their variable charge characteristics. The removal of native OC resulted in a slight increase in the net positive charge on soil clay surfaces, while sesquioxide removal increased the negative charge. Changes in the functional groups on the SCF surfaces contributed to the changes in CEC and zeta potential values. There was a strong relationship (R2 = 0.93, p < 0.05) between the Langmuir maximum DOC adsorption capacity (Qmax) and SSA. The Qmax value also showed a moderately strong relationship (R2 = 0.55, p < 0.05) with zeta potential (at pH 7). Qmax was only poorly correlated with CEC and native OC content. Therefore, along with SSA, the surface charge and functional groups of SCFs played the key role in determining the adsorption affinity and hence retention of DOC in soils.

Abstract:There is a growing concern about climate change, and soils have attracted significant research attention as a sink for atmospheric CO2. Mechanisms of soil organic carbon (SOC) stabilization have received much focus recently due to its relevance in controlling the global C cycle. The purpose of this chapter is to review our existing knowledge of soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics with special reference to the role of clay mineralogy in the retention and stabilization of OC in soil. A good understanding of the stabilization mechanisms of SOM will help in adopting good management practices for SOM storage, improving soil structure and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. Here we present the SOM dynamics in relation to their sources and sinks, factors affecting SOC sequestration, and various processes involved in SOM stabilization. We critically review the studies examining soil, environmental, and management factors impacting SOM stabilization with a special reference to clay mineralogy. Finally, we present some future research needs in this area.

Abstract:Sorption plays an important role in controlling the fate and behaviour of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in soils. However, there is no consensus on the influence of key soil properties on sorption of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in the current literature. In particular, the effects of soil mineral components on sorption have not been fully investigated. In this study the sorption isotherms of PFOS under different electrolytes (Na+ and Ca2＋) was investigated using eight contrasting soils that varied in pH, total organic carbon (TOC) content, clay content and other physico-chemical properties. In addition the sorption behaviour of PFOS was studied at different pH values (3–9) and ionic strengths (0.03 and 0.3 M NaNO3) to determine the role of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions on PFOS sorption. The effects of possible co-contaminants, lead (Pb) (20.8 mg/L Pb2+) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC, 11.5 mg/L as humic acid) and perfluorooctanoic acid (114 μg/L PFOA) on sorption of PFOS were also investigated. A strongly significant linear relationship (p<0.01) between TOC and the amount of PFOS sorbed was observed irrespective of the background electrolyte index cation, Na+ or Ca2＋. The presence of DOC, and other common co-contaminants like PFOA, and Pb2+ in solution generally increased PFOS sorption by the soils. Sorption of PFOS at different ionic strengths and pH demonstrated that the sorption was dominated by hydrophobic interactions when the TOC content was high, but electrostatic interactions dominated at lower pH values and in soils with smaller TOC contents. This study demonstrates the role of both organic matter and surface chemical properties of soils as key factors influencing PFOS sorption. The use of multiple soil properties to explain the sorption is required.

Abstract:Most natural sedimentary clay contains organic matter, and even a small amount of organic matter will have a great impact on the physical and mechanical properties of clay. In order to clarify the influence of organic matter content on clay soil, the illite-quartz mixture was mixed with natural amorphous peat soil (organic matter content is 50%) in different proportions for studying the influence of different organic matter contents on the physical properties (specific gravity, Gs; moisture content, w ; void ratio, e; liquid limit, w L ; plastic limit, w p ; plasticity index, Ip) and shear characteristics (cohesion, c; friction angle, φ) of clay soil. The experimental results found that, with the change of organic matter content, the specific gravity and void ratio of clay changed linearly, while the water content, Atterberg limit, shear strength, cohesion, and friction angle changed nonlinearly with the increase of organic matter content. Moisture content and Atterberg limit have a turning point when OC = 7.5%. Shear strength, cohesion, and friction angle all have obvious turning points when OC = 7.5% and OC = 37.5%. The variation of moisture content and Atterberg limit with organic matter content indicates that OC = 7.5% may be the limit value for the different forms of organic matter in the clay. When OC ≤ 7.5%, the organic matter in clay is in the bound state; when OC > 7.5%, the bound organic matter reaches saturation; and the free organic matter gradually increases. The change law of shear strength characteristics with organic matter content shows that the interaction between minerals and organic matter exhibits different shear characteristics under different organic matter content. When OC ≤ 7.5%, clay shows mineral properties, when 7.5% 37.5%, clay shows free organic matter properties.

Effect of Clay Mineralogy and Soil Organic Carbon in Aggregates under Straw Incorporation

Abstract:The interaction between soil organic carbon (SOC) and clay minerals is a critical mechanism for retaining SOC and protecting soil fertility and long-term agricultural sustainability. The SOC composition and minerals speciation in clay fractions (<2 μm) within soil aggregates under straw removed (T) and straw incorporation (TS) conditions were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The TS treatment promoted enrichment of clay in aggregates. The TS increased the contents of SOC (27.0–86.6%), poorly crystalline Fe oxide (Feo), and activity of Fe oxides (Feo/Fed); whereas, it reduced the concentrations of free Fe oxide (Fed) in the clay fractions within aggregates. Straw incorporation promoted the accumulation of aromatic-C and carboxylic-C in the clay fraction within aggregates. The relative amount of hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite, aliphatic-C, and alcohol-C in the clay fractions within the macroaggregates was higher than that microaggregates, whereas the relative amounts of illite, kaolinite, Fe(III), and aromatic-C had a reverse tendency. The hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite in clay fractions showed positive correlation with the amounts of C–C(H) (r = 0.93) and C–O (r = 0.96 *, p < 0.05). The concentration of Feo and Feo/Fed ratio was positively correlated with the amounts of C=C and C(O)O content in clay within aggregates. Long-term straw incorporation induced transformation of clay minerals and Fe oxide, which was selectively stabilized straw-derived organic compounds in clay fractions within soil aggregates.

Abstract:The full behaviour of natural clay minerals in soil organic carbon (SOC) stabilization in the presence of oxides and external C inputs is yet unknown. Thus, an incubation experiment was conducted in a sand–clay mixture with different soil clay fractions (SCFs) obtained from Alfisol, Inceptisol, Mollisol, and Vertisol in the presence of wheat residues to compare their C stabilization capacity. The C mineralization rates were higher in 1:1 type dominated SCFs (Alfisol and Inceptisol) compared to 2:1 interstratified mineral dominated SCFs (Vertisol). Wheat residues as C source altered SCFs' abilities to stabilize SOC at only moderate dosages of application (3–12 g kg −1 ). C mineralization and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) fell by 40% and 30%, respectively, as the amount of clay increased from 7.5 to 40%. However, removing sesquioxides from the SCFs boosted C mineralization and MBC by 22% and 16–32%, respectively, which matched with higher enzymatic activities in the sand–clay mixture. The increased C stabilization capacity of Vertisol-SCF may be attributed to its greater specific surface area (SSA) (506 m 2 g −1 ) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) [meq/100 g]. Regression analysis revealed that SSA, CEC, and enzymatic activity explained approximately 86% of total variations in C mineralization. This study highlighted the critical role of 2:1 expanding clay minerals and sesquioxides in greater stabilization of external C input compared to its 1:1 counterpart. It also implied that the role of mineralogy or texture and sesquioxides levels in different soils (Vertisol, Mollisol, Inceptisol, Alfisol) should be prioritized while adding crop residues to reduce C footprint and enhance sequestration.

Abstract:Understanding of factors governing soil structural features is necessary for managing key processes affecting crop productivity and environmental impacts of agriculture, e.g., soil water balance, aeration, and root penetration. Organic matter is known to act as a major binding agent in soil aggregation and thus constitutes a central pillar in soil structure formation. However, knowledge of the structural role of organic matter or carbon (OC) in soils highly rich in clay sized particles (<0.002 mm) is limited. In this study, the effects of clay and OC contents on aggregate stability, water holding capacity, near‐saturated hydraulic conductivity, total porosity, and pore size distribution were assessed in cultivated fields with high clay content located in private crop production farms in southern Finland. Significant positive correlations were found between OC content and proportion of water stable aggregates and specific pore sizes from the range of 30 μm up to 1 mm diameter determined by image analysis. Porosities on a smaller size range derived from water retention measurements likewise showed a positive correlation with OC in <0.2 μm sizes. On the range of 0.2–1 μm a negative relationship was observed, which induced a negative effect of OC on soil plant available water reserves. In line with the positive correlation between OC and larger soil pores, free water, representing the amount of water that can be drained by gravity, exhibited a positive relationship with OC suggesting that OC content can enhance aeration of soils with high clay content . Compared to OC, clay content tended to have an adverse effect on soil structural properties. Clay correlated negatively with pores larger than 30 μm, free water content, and extrapolated field saturated hydraulic conductivity. Further, our imaging results showed how saturated hydraulic conductivity was controlled by pore morphology, and there was a power law relationship between the conductivity and critical pore diameter. K∝dc2 in agreement with the percolation theory. Overall, the structural impacts and hydrological implications of OC and clay in heavy clay soils vary by pore size ranges and their emergent practical impacts are thus not straightforward. Abstract:Improved quantification of the factors controlling soil organic matter (SOM) stabilization at continental to global scales is needed to inform projections of the largest actively cycling terrestrial carbon pool on Earth, and its response to environmental change. Biogeochemical models rely almost exclusively on clay content to modify rates of SOM turnover and fluxes of climate-active CO2 to the atmosphere. Emerging conceptual understanding, however, suggests other soil physicochemical properties may predict SOM stabilization better than clay content. We addressed this discrepancy by synthesizing data from over 5,500 soil profiles spanning continental scale environmental gradients. Here, we demonstrate that other physicochemical parameters are much stronger predictors of SOM content, with clay content having relatively little explanatory power. We show that exchangeable calcium strongly predicted SOM content in water-limited, alkaline soils, whereas with increasing moisture availability and acidity, iron- and aluminum-oxyhydroxides emerged as better predictors, demonstrating that the relative importance of SOM stabilization mechanisms scales with climate and acidity. These results highlight the urgent need to modify biogeochemical models to better reflect the role of soil physicochemical properties in SOM cycling.

The microstructure and the behaviour of low organic clayey soils in Sri Lanka

Abstract:Numerous studies focus on investigating organic soils with high organic content. However, only a limited amount of literature discusses the properties and behaviour of low organic content soils. Sri Lankan organic soil is an excellent example of a low organic content soil, demonstrating different behaviour from highly organic fibrous soil. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of Sri Lankan organic soil were studied to determine the reasons for these observed variations. Sri Lankan organic soils were observed to consist of highly decomposed organic matter in an amorphous state with higher proportions of mineral matter. The microstructure characteristics observed through SEM images mostly explained the variation of properties and behaviour of the Sri Lankan organic soil in contrast to highly organic fibrous soil. Correlations were also derived between properties of Sri Lankan organic soil and compared with similar relationships derived from other geological conditions. While some correlations derived in this study closely follow the relationships for other organic soils with similar microstructure characteristics, the acidity of the deposit resulted in different behaviour of a few correlations. This study improves the current knowledge of the effect of microstructure characteristics on the properties and behaviour of Sri Lankan low-organic clayey soils, which otherwise primarily depend on theories for highly organic peaty soils. Furthermore, the correlations derived and validated for low organic soils can be utilized in any organic clay deposit with similar microstructure characteristics.

Abstract:Clay minerals constitute an important component of the soil system and knowledge of their role in soil fertility is imperative for sustainable soil management and productivity. The aim of this work is to overview the influence of clay minerals on some major soil fertility attributes. The rationale for carrying out this work is that most soil fertility studies rarely incorporate soil mineralogy. Clay minerals, through their physical and chemical properties, affect soil fertility by controlling nutrient supplies and availability, through the sequestration and stabilization of soil organic matter, by controlling soil physical properties through microaggregate formation, by influencing soil acidity and controlling soil microbial population and activity. The main processes involved in these relationships are dissolution-precipitation and adsorption-desorption processes, alongside mechanisms involving the formation of short-range-ordered phases. Although the determination of soil mineralogical properties is very costly and time-consuming, information about a soil’s mineralogy is imperative for a holistic understanding and proper management of soil fertility. Therefore, the development of rapid, low-cost, reliable and efficient techniques of soil mineralogical analysis, directly applicable to soil fertility investigations, constitutes a major challenge. Also, future research should investigate the relationships between clay minerals and soil nitrogen vis-à-vis sequestration and stabilization. Lastly, clay minerals should be considered in studies dealing with soil quality assessment, especially in the choice of soil quality indicators.
Retention and loss of water extractable carbon in soils: effect of clay properties

Abstract:Clay sorption is important for organic carbon (C) sequestration in soils, but little is known about the effect of different clay properties on organic C sorption and release. To investigate the effect of clay content and properties on sorption, desorption and loss of water extractable organic C (WEOC), two experiments were conducted. In experiment 1, a loamy sand alone (native) or mixed with clay isolated from a surface or subsoil (78 and 96% clay) resulting in 90, 158 and 175 g clay kg(-1) soil. These soil treatments were leached with different WEOC concentrations, and then CO2 release was measured for 28 days followed by leaching with reverse osmosis water at the end of experiment. The second experiment was conducted to determine WEOC sorption and desorption of clays isolated from the loamy sand (native), surface soil and subsoil. Addition of clays isolated from surface and subsoil to sandy loam increased WEOC sorption and reduced C leaching and cumulative respiration in percentage of total organic C and WEOC added when expressed per g soil and per g clay. Compared to clays isolated from the surface and subsoil, the native clay had higher concentrations of illite and exchangeable Ca(2+), total organic C and a higher CEC but a lower extractable Fe/Al concentration. This indicates that compared to the clay isolated from the surface and the subsoil, the native clay had fewer potential WEOC binding sites because it had lower Fe/Al content thus lower number of binding sites and the existing binding sites are already occupied native organic matter. The results of this study suggest that in the soils used here, the impact of clay on WEOC sorption and loss is dependent on its indigenous organic carbon and Fe and/or Al concentrations whereas clay mineralogy, CEC, exchangeable Ca(2+) and surface area are less important.
Quantification of the Sorption of Organic Pollutants to Minerals Via an Improved Mathematical Model Accounting for Associations Between Minerals and Soil Organic Matter.

Abstract:The retention of organic pollutant (OP) in soils is commonly attributed to interactions with soil organic matter (SOM), perhaps overlooking substantial involvement of soil minerals. In this study, 36 soil samples with far-ranging ratios of clay to organic carbon were used to examine contribution of minerals on soil sorption of pentachlorophenol (PCP) and phenanthrene (PHE). Sorption isotherms (n = 216) were fit individually using three typical sorption models, with the most fitted K-d values screened out for quantification of the net mineral contribution to total sorption via development of mathematical model accounting for associations between minerals and SOM. Two mineral-relevant parameters [adsorption distribution coefficient (K-min) and mineral contribution index (MCI)] were simultaneously defined. Previously reported soil sorption data of PCP, PHE and butachlor (13, 12 and 46, respectively) were also extracted and included to improve the credibility of mathematic model. The average MCI values were calculated as 0.421, 0.405 and 0.512 in PCP, PHE and butachlor treated soils, respectively, very close to or even over than the minerals dominant critical value (0.5). This suggested the significant, or even predominant, contribution of minerals - as compared to SOM. Significant dependence of MCI with four conventional parameters of soil property further offered the possibility to roughly evaluate mineral contributions based on estimated threshold values of soil property parameters (especially TOC). Abstract:Soil organic matter (SOM) plays a central role in the global carbon balance and in mitigating climate change. It will therefore be important to understand mechanisms of SOM decomposition and stabilisation. SOM stabilisation is controlled by biotic factors, such as the efficiency by which microbes use and produce organic compounds varying in chemistry, but also by abiotic factors, such as adsorption of plant- and microbially-derived organic matter onto soil minerals. Indeed, the physicochemical adsorption of organic matter onto soil minerals, forming mineral associated organic matter (MAOM), is one of the significant processes for SOM stabilisation. We integrate existing frameworks of SOM stabilisation and illustrate how microbial control over SOM stabilisation interacts with soil minerals. In our new integrated framework, we emphasise the interplay between substrate characteristics and the abundance of active clay surfaces on microbial processes such as carbon use efficiency and recycling. We postulate that microbial use and recycling of plant- and microbially-derived substrates decline with increased abundance of active clay surfaces, and that the shape of these relationships depend on the affinity of each substrate to adsorb, thereby affecting the efficiency by which organic matter remains in the soil and is stabilised into MAOM. Our framework provides avenues for novel research and ideas to incorporate interactions between clay surfaces and microbes on SOM stabilisation in biogeochemical models.

Abstract:Abstract The effect of soil organic matter (SOM) on aggregation of variably-charged red soils (Ultisol) through clay zeta potential is not fully understood. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to investigate the SOM effect on the clay zeta potential and soil aggregation after fertilization. Soils under 17 years of fertilization (manure, NPK + straw, NPK, and control (CK) were adjusted by KCl solution to reach varying soil pH and concentration in order to determine clay zeta potential, cations, and aggregate size distribution. The SOM content and C-functional groups by 13 C-NMR analysis were also determined. Results showed that the negative zeta potential displayed a bell-shaped pattern with increasing concentration of KCl, but displayed different amplitude of variation among treatments. Manure had the highest zeta potential value and its degree of variation in relative to the value at KCl concentration of 0.1 mol L −1 (19%), NPK + straw and NPK treatments were similar, and CK was the least. Greater negative zeta potential for manure treatment was attributed to higher SOM content, aromatic-C functional groups, and their greater concentrations of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ than did the CK. As a result, higher SOM and clay zeta potential yielded in less release of amount of soil particles (< 10 μm) ( r = − 0.46*) and enhanced water stable macroaggregates for manure instead of NPK + straw. Long-term manure fertilization would be suggested as a conservation practice for red soil due to its increase in soil aggregate stability and negative zeta potential in subtropical climate.
