Abstract:We study a class of Landau-de Gennes energy functionals with a sextic bulk energy density in a three-dimensional domain. We examine the asymptotic behavior of uniformly bounded minimizers in two distinct scenarios: one where their energy remains uniformly bounded, and another where it logarithmically diverges as a function of the elastic constant. In the first case, we show that up to a subsequence, the minimizers converge to a locally minimizing harmonic map in both the $ H_{\loc}^1 $ and $ C_{\loc}^j, j\in \Z_+ $ norms within compact subsets that are distant from the singularities of the limit. For the second case, we establish the existence of a closed set denoted as $ \cS_{\op{line}} $. This set has finite length and consists of finite segments of lines locally such that the energy of minimizers are locally uniformly bounded away from it. This work solves an open question raised by Canevari (ARMA, 223 (2017), 591-676), specifically concerning point and line defects in the Landau-de Gennes model with sextic potentials.

Minimization of a Ginzburg-Landau functional with mean curvature operator in 1-D

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to investigate the minimization problem related to a Ginzburg-Landau energy functional, where in particular a nonlinear diffusion of mean curvature-type is considered, together with a classical double well potential. A careful analysis of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation, equipped with natural boundary conditions and mass constraint, leads to the existence of an unique Maxwell solution, namely a monotone increasing solution obtained for small diffusion and close to the so-called Maxwell point. Then, it is shown that this particular solution (and its reversal) has least energy among all the stationary points satisfying the given mass constraint. Moreover, as the viscosity parameter tends to zero, it converges to the increasing (decreasing for the reversal) single interface solution, namely the constrained minimizer of the corresponding energy without diffusion. Connections with Cahn-Hilliard models, obtained in terms of variational derivatives of the total free energy considered here, are also presented.

Abstract:In this article we first prove existence of minimizers of the Landau-de Gennes energy for liquid crystals with homogeneous external magnetic field and strong uniaxial planar anchoring. Next we consider the asymptotics of solutions to the joint minimization of the energy w.r.t. the function and its boundary condition. This constitutes a generalization to arbitrary regular particle shapes of the results obtained in [BLS2024] for $\lambda=\infty$. Moreover we show the absence of line singularities in some asymptotic parameter regimes. Finally we characterize the optimal orientation of particles vis-à-vis the magnetic field direction and compute it explicitly for different particle shapes.

Abstract:We analyze a system of nonlinear parabolic equations which describes the evolution of an order parameter f and the relative temperature nu in a superconducting material occupying a bounded domain Omega subset of R-n, n <= 3. Here the dependent variable f is subject to the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition, while nu is equal to a time-dependent Dirichlet datum (u) over tilde on the boundary. Therefore, the corresponding dynamical system is nonautonomous. Our main goal is to analyze the asymptotic behavior of its solutions. We first show that the system has a bounded absorbing set and a global attractor which are uniform with respect to a sufficiently general class of (u) over tilde. Then, we give sufficient conditions on (u) over tilde which ensure the convergence of a given trajectory to a single stationary state and we estimate the convergence rate. Finally, we demonstrate the existence of an exponential attractor of finite fractal dimension for quasi-periodic or stabilizing boundary data (u) over tilde.
A multiscale approach to the stationary Ginzburg-Landau equations of superconductivity

Abstract:In this work, we study the numerical approximation of minimizers of the Ginzburg-Landau free energy, a common model to describe the behavior of superconductors under magnetic fields. The unknowns are the order parameter, which characterizes the density of superconducting charge carriers, and the magnetic vector potential, which allows to deduce the magnetic field that penetrates the superconductor. Physically important and numerically challenging are especially settings which involve lattices of quantized vortices which can be formed in materials with a large Ginzburg-Landau parameter $\kappa$. In particular, $\kappa$ introduces a severe mesh resolution condition for numerical approximations. In order to reduce these computational restrictions, we investigate a particular discretization which is based on mixed meshes where we apply a Lagrange finite element approach for the vector potential and a localized orthogonal decomposition (LOD) approach for the order parameter. We justify the proposed method by a rigorous a-priori error analysis (in $L^2$ and $H^1$) in which we keep track of the influence of $\kappa$ in all error contributions. This allows us to conclude $\kappa$-dependent resolution conditions for the various meshes and which only impose moderate practical constraints compared to a conventional finite element discretization. Finally, our theoretical findings are illustrated by numerical experiments.

Stability conditions for mean-field limiting vorticities of the Ginzburg-Landau equations in 2D

Abstract:We analyse the limit of stable solutions to the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equations when $\varepsilon$, the inverse of the GL parameter, goes to zero and in a regime where the applied magnetic field is of order $|\log \varepsilon |$ whereas the total energy is of order $|\log \varepsilon|^2$. In order to do that we pass to the limit in the second inner variation of the GL energy. The main difficulty is to understand the convergence of quadratic terms involving derivatives of functions converging only weakly in $H^1$. We use an assumption of convergence of energies, the limiting criticality conditions obtained by Sandier-Serfaty by passing to the limit in the first inner variation and properties of limiting vorticities to find the limit of all the desired quadratic terms. At last we investigate the limiting stability condition we have obtained. In the case with magnetic field we study an example of an admissible limiting vorticity supported on a line in a square $\Omega=(-L,L)^2$ and show that if $L$ is small enough this vorticiy satisfies the limiting stability condition whereas when $L$ is large enough it stops verifying that condition. In the case without magnetic field we use a result of Iwaniec-Onninen to prove that every measure in $H^{-1}(\Omega)$ satisfying the first order limiting criticality condition also verifies the second order limiting stability condition.

Abstract:This article is divided into two parts. 1. By extending the BCS theory for isotropic homogeneous systems to the case for the anisotropic inhomogeneous systems, the complete Ginzburg_Landau equations for the anisotropic inhomogeneous systems are derived, and the relations between macroscopic and microscopic quantities are also given. 2. In the framework of an effective modulation potential model based on the structure feature of layered superconductors with conduction layers alternating with nonconduction layers and using the effective mass approximation, we extend the BCS theory for isotropic homogeneous systems to the case for the anisotropic inhomogeneous and then obtain some physical formulas for, critical temperature and energy gap, which are in good agreement with the experimental results for, YBa 2Cu 3O 7-x superconductors. At the same time, the complete Ginzburg Landau equations for the anisotropic inhomogeneous systems are also found, having the same form as those in the first part. The corresponding relations between the macroscopic and microscopic parameters are also in good agreement with the experimental results for YBa 2Cu 3O 7-x

Abstract:A classical result in the study of Ginzburg-Landau equations is that, for Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, if a sequence of functions has energy uniformly bounded on a logarithmic scale then we can find a subsequence whose Jacobians are convergent in suitable dual spaces and whose renormalized energy is at least the sum of absolute degrees of vortices. However, the corresponding question for the case of tangential or normal boundary conditions has not been considered. In addition, the question of convergence of up to the boundary is not very well understood. Here, we consider these questions for a bounded, connected, open set of $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ with $C^{2,1}$ boundary.

Abstract:We investigate the long time behavior of the critical mass Patlak-Keller-Segel equation. This equation has a one parameter family of steady-state solutions $\rho_\lambda$, $\lambda>0$, with thick tails whose second moment is not bounded. We show that these steady state solutions are stable, and find basins of attraction for them using an entropy functional ${\mathcal H}_\lambda$ coming from the critical fast diffusion equation in $\R^2$. We construct solutions of Patlak-Keller-Segel equation satisfying an entropy-entropy dissipation inequality for ${\mathcal H}_\lambda$. While the entropy dissipation for ${\mathcal H}_\lambda$ is strictly positive, it turns out to be a difference of two terms, neither of which need to be small when the dissipation is small. We introduce a strategy of "controlled concentration" to deal with this issue, and then use the regularity obtained from the entropy-entropy dissipation inequality to prove the existence of basins of attraction for each stationary state composed by certain initial data converging towards $\rho_\lambda$. In the present paper, we do not provide any estimate of the rate of convergence, but we discuss how this would result from a stability result for a certain sharp Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequality.

Abstract:The Ginzburg-Landau theory, which was introduced to phenomenologically describe the destruction of superconductivity by a magnetic field at the beginning, has brought up much more knowledge beyond the original one as a mean-field theory of thermodynamics states. There the complex order parameter plays an important role. Here we propose a macroscopic theory to describe the features of ferroelectrics by a two-component complex order parameter coupled to nonabelian gauge potentials that provide more freedom to reflect interplays between different measurables. Within this theoretical framework, some recently discovered empirical static and time-independent phenomena, such as vortex, anti-vortex, spiral orders can be obtained as solutions for different gauge potentials. It is expected to bring in a new angle of view with more elucidation than the traditional one that takes the polarization as order parameter.

Abstract:Higher than the lowest Landau level, (LLL) contributions to magnetization and specific heat of superconductors are calculated using the Ginzburg-Landau equation approach. Corrections to the excitation spectrum around the solution of these equations (treated perturbatively) are found. Due to symmetries of the problem leading to numerous cancellations the range of validity of the LLL approximation in the mean held is much wider then a naive range and extends ail the way down to H=H-c2(T)/13. Moreover, the contribution of higher Landau levels (HLL) is significantly smaller compared to LLL than expected naively. Like the LLL part, the lattice excitation spectrum at small quasimomenta is softer than that of the usual acoustic phonons. This enhances the effect of fluctuations. The mean-held calculation extends to third order, while the fluctuation contribution due to HLL is to one leap. This complements the earlier calculation of the LLL part to two-loop order, [S0163-1829(99)03834-5].

Abstract:We numerically investigate the phenomenological nonlocal Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian for two-dimensional superconductors in a strong magnetic field by Langevin equation. We obtain a regular vortex lattice which is very near to the square lattice. We calculate the structure factor and Abrikosov factor at various temperatures. We also evaluate the specific heat and obtain a cusp which indicates the melting of the vortex lattice.

Thin-film limit of the Ginzburg-Landau heat flow in a curved thin domain

Abstract:We consider the Ginzburg-Landau heat flow without magnetic effect in a curved thin domain under the Naumann boundary condition. When the curved thin domain shrinks to a given closed hypersurface as the thickness of the thin domain tends to zero, we show that the weighted average of a weak solution to the thin-domain problem converges weakly on the limit surface under the assumption that the initial data is of class $L^\infty$ and satisfies some conditions. Moreover, under the same assumption, we derive a limit equation by characterizing the limit function as a weak solution, and prove a difference estimate on the limit surface of an averaged weak solution to the thin-domain problem and a weak solution to the limit problem explicitly in terms of the thickness of the thin domain. We also derive a difference estimate in the curved thin domain of weak solutions to the thin-domain problem and to the limit problem, but without requiring that the initial data of the thin-domain problem is of class $L^\infty$.

Abstract:We investigate the effects of material anisotropy on the superheating field of layered superconductors. We provide an intuitive argument both for the existence of a superheating field, and its dependence on anisotropy, for κ=λ/ξ (the ratio of magnetic to superconducting healing lengths) both large and small. On the one hand, the combination of our estimates with published results using a two-gap model for MgB2 suggests high anisotropy of the superheating field near zero temperature. On the other hand, within Ginzburg-Landau theory for a single gap, we see that the superheating field shows significant anisotropy only when the crystal anisotropy is large and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ is small. We then conclude that only small anisotropies in the superheating field are expected for typical unconventional superconductors near the critical temperature. Using a generalized form of Ginzburg Landau theory, we do a quantitative calculation for the anisotropic superheating field by mapping the problem to the isotropic case, and present a phase diagram in terms of anisotropy and κ, showing type I, type II, or mixed behavior (within Ginzburg-Landau theory), and regions where each asymptotic solution is expected. We estimate anisotropies for a number of different materials, and discuss the importance of these results for radio-frequency cavities for particle accelerators.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Volume 62, Issue 3, Page 1313-1343, June 2024. In this work, we study discrete minimizers of the Ginzburg–Landau energy in finite element spaces. Special focus is given to the influence of the Ginzburg–Landau parameter [math]. This parameter is of physical interest as large values can trigger the appearance of vortex lattices. Since the vortices have to be resolved on sufficiently fine computational meshes, it is important to translate the size of [math] into a mesh resolution condition, which can be done through error estimates that are explicit with respect to [math] and the spatial mesh width [math]. For that, we first work in an abstract framework for a general class of discrete spaces, where we present convergence results in a problem-adapted [math]-weighted norm. Afterward we apply our findings to Lagrangian finite elements and a particular generalized finite element construction. In numerical experiments we confirm that our derived [math]- and [math]-error estimates are indeed optimal in [math] and [math].

Abstract:We study the Ginzburg-Landau equations on line bundles over non-compact Riemann surfaces with constant negative curvature. We prove existence of solutions with energy strictly less than that of the constant curvature (magnetic field) one. These solutions are the non-commutative generalizations of the Abrikosov vortex lattice of superconductivity. Conjecturally, they are (local) minimizers of the Ginzburg-Landau energy. We obtain precise asymptotic expansions of these solutions and their energies in terms of the curvature of the underlying Riemann surface. Among other things, our result shows the spontaneous breaking of the gauge-translational symmetry of the Ginzburg-Landau equations.

Abstract:We consider a gauge-invariant Ginzburg–Landau functional (also known as Abelian Yang–Mills–Higgs model), on Hermitian line bundles over closed Riemannian manifolds of dimension n ≥ 3 {n\geq 3} . Assuming a logarithmic energy bound in the coupling parameter, we study the asymptotic behaviour of critical points in the London limit. After a convenient choice of the gauge, we show compactness of finite-energy critical points in Sobolev norms. Moreover, thanks to a suitable monotonicity formula, we prove that the energy densities of critical points, rescaled by the logarithm of the coupling parameter, converge to the weight measure of a stationary, rectifiable varifold of codimension 2.

X-ray Luminous Radio Supernovae in the Center of M82?

Abstract:We investigate the X-ray emission from the central regions of the prototypical starburst galaxy M82. Previous observations had shown a bright central X-ray point source, with suggestions as to its nature including a low-luminosity AGN or an X-ray binary. A new analysis of ROSAT HRI observations find 4 X-ray point sources in the central kpc of M82 and we identify radio counterparts for the two brightest X-ray sources. The counterparts are probably young radio supernovae (SN) and are amongst the most luminous and youthful SN in M82. Therefore, we suggest that we are seeing X-ray emission from young supernovae in M82, and in particular the brightest X-ray source is associated with the radio source 41.95+57.5. We discuss the implications of these observations for the evolution of X-ray luminous SN.

Abstract:We introduce and discuss discrete two-dimensional models for XY spin systems and screw dislocations in crystals. We prove that, as the lattice spacing $\e$ tends to zero, the relevant energies in these models behave like a free energy in the complex Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity, justifying in a rigorous mathematical language the analogies between screw dislocations in crystals and vortices in superconductors. To this purpose, we introduce a notion of asymptotic variational equivalence between families of functionals in the framework of $\Gamma$-convergence. We then prove that, in several scaling regimes, the complex Ginzburg-Landau, the XY spin system and the screw dislocation energy functionals are variationally equivalent. Exploiting such an equivalence between dislocations and vortices, we can show new results concerning the asymptotic behavior of screw dislocations in the $|\log\e|^2$ energetic regime.
