Abstract:Dynamic behavior of hydrophilic microparticles impacting on the particle-laden interface is experimentally studied using a high-speed camera at different properties of particle layer and subphase. When the hydrophilic microparticle impacts on the particle-laden interface, its surface is likely to change from Wenzel to Cassie-Baxter state. Three types of impact behavior can be identified, namely, rebound, suspension, and submergence. Especially, the particles will suspend under the particle-laden interface due to the interaction between impact particles and particle-laden interface. The properties of the particle layer and subphase show little influence on the normal coefficient of restitution, while the tangential coefficient of restitution is significantly affected by the particle size at the layer. A modified penetration probability is proposed as an exponential function of the inertial, modified capillary and hydrodynamic forces with introducing effective interfacial viscosity and additional coefficient of capillary force. The collision force of microparticles with the particle-laden interface and hydrodynamic force displacing the surrounding stationary liquid are the main factors influencing the penetration probability.
