Abstract:For the effectively removal of NOx emissions in the practical flue gas, a highly active NH3-SCR catalyst with remarkable SO2 tolerance is desirable. Herein a novel MnCoOx sphere catalyst has been developed, which not only exhibited high low-temperature activity for the NH3-SCR of NOx but also significantly enhanced SO2 resistance. XPS analysis and in-situ DRIFTs revealed that the formation of abundant bulk MnSO4 species due to the present SO2 led to the irreversible poisoning of pure MnOx catalyst, which could change the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism of NH3-SCR reaction into the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism and inhibit the low-temperature activity. While over MnCoOx sphere catalyst the formation of MnSO4 is significantly inhibited in the presence of SO2, so that the reaction over the SO2-poisoned Mn(5)Co(5)Ox catalyst can still proceed by the L-H mechanism and maintain its high catalytic performance. This work unravels the mechanistic promoting effect of Co on the SO2 tolerance of MnCoOx catalyst from sulfates as well as the reaction mechanism perspectives, which would guide an ingenious design of SO2 tolerant Mn-based NH3-SCR catalysts.
Promoting Metal Oxides–zeolite Electron Interaction on MnCeOx/HY Catalyst for Boosting Nitrogen Oxides Reduction

Abstract:The MnOx-CeO2 metal oxides are considered as promising alternative catalysts for selective catalytic reduction with NH3 (NH3-SCR) to remove NOx due to its excellent low-temperature performance. However, their strong oxidative ability can lead to NH3 over-oxidation, narrowing the active temperature range and reducing N2 selectivity. Moreover, their weak surface acidity hampers medium to high-temperature activity and alkali metal resistance. Hence, in this study, MnCeOx metal oxides were coupled with HY zeolite to create MnCeOx/HY, demonstrating excellent NH3-SCR performance. The high dispersion of metal oxides on the zeolite surface and their close integration promoted strong electron interaction, effectively reducing oxygen vacancies and surface adsorbed oxygen concentrations. Consequently, the oxidative ability of active metal oxides was appropriately weakened, suppressing undesirable side reactions. MnCeOx/HY also notably suppressed NO adsorption and nitrate formation, promoting the catalytic reaction solely through the E-R mechanism and enhancing N2 selectivity. The abundant strong acid sites on the zeolite surface facilitates NH3 adsorption at moderate to high temperatures, notably expanding the active temperature window. Furthermore, the acid sites of HY zeolite serve as sacrificial sites, preferentially reacting with alkali metals, thus exhibiting excellent resistance to alkali metal poisoning on MnCeOx/HY. Combining with the DFT results, the structure-activity relationships in this study also reveal the importance of the effective synergy between acid sites and redox sites for optimal catalytic performance, offering valuable insights into the development of highly active and alkali-resistant denitrification catalysts.
Insight into the Origin of Excellent SO 2 Tolerance and de-NO x Performance of quasi-Mn-BTC in the Low-Temperature Catalytic Reduction of Nitrogen Oxide

Abstract:NO x emission is a major environmental issue, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is the most effective method for the conversion of NO x to harmless N2 and H2O. Manganese oxide has excellent low-temperature (LT) denitration (de-NO x ) activity, but poor SO2 tolerance hinders its application. Herein, we report an interesting SCR catalyst, quasi-metal–organic-framework (MOF) nanorod containing manganese (quasi-Mn-BTC) with abundant oxygen vacancies (Vo), unique hierarchical porous structure, and half-metallic property, which successfully overcome the disadvantage of poor SO2 tolerance of Mn-based catalysts. The NO x conversion over the Mn-BTC-335 °C only drops by 7% until SO2 is gradually increased to 200 ppm from 100 ppm for 36 h. Furthermore, the quasi-Mn-BTC presents excellent LT de-NO x performance with above 90% NO x conversion between 120 and 330 °C at a gas hourly space velocity of 36,000 h–1. Experimental and theoretical calculations confirm that the difficult electron transport between SO2 and active sites can prevent it from competing adsorption with NH3 and NO. Furthermore, the low degree of d–p hybridization and unstable p–p hybridization of SO2 on the active sites make it difficult for adsorption and oxidation; thus, the weak adsorption of SO2 can prevent it from sulfation on the active sites, ensuring Mn-BTC-335 °C excellent SO2 tolerance. Additionally, the half-metallicity property, the extraordinary d–sp hybridization, and the high degree of s–p hybridization cause strong bonding and the delocalization of electrons that promote the charge transfer and adsorbed ion diffusion for NH3 and NO adsorption, promoting the LT de-NO x performance. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra and density functional theory calculation further reveal that the de-NO x reaction over Mn-BTC-335 °C follows both Eley–Rideal (E-R) and Langmuir–Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanisms. The “standard reaction” is more likely to occur in the E-R reaction, while the “fast reaction” is prone to occur in the L-H pathway, and HNNOH and NH3NO2 are the two key intermediates. This work provides a viable strategy for augmenting the LT de-NO x and SO2 tolerance of Mn-based catalysts, which may pave a new way in the application of MOFs in de-NO x , and the complete reaction mechanism provides a solid basis for future improvements of the LT NH3-SCR de-NO x reaction.

Abstract:A series of Sm- and/or Zr-doped MnOx-TiO2 catalysts were prepared, and the catalysts exhibited better N-2 selectivity and SO2 resistance than the undoped MnOx-TiO2 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NO by NH3 (NH3-SCR). The reasons for the good N-2 selectivity and SO2D resistance of the catalysts were proposed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that electron transfer between the manganese and samarium species by Mn4+ + Sm2+ <-> Mn3+ + Sm3+ redox cycles occurred in the Sm-containing catalysts. Furthermore, electron transfer from Sm2+ to Mn4+ suppressed electron transfer from NH3 to Mn4+, inhibiting the formation of NH2 or NH. Thus, the pathway for NH generation was removed, and the reaction of 2NH + 4NO -> 3N(2)O + H2O was prevented. Consequently, the N-2 selectivity of the NH3-SCR reaction was enhanced. In situ diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) combined with thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry and mass spectrometry (TG-DSC-MS) results revealed that the deposition rate of sulfate species decreases after Sm doping, which was also attributed to the suppressed electron transfer from SO2 to Mn4+, i.e., the oxidation of SO2 to SO3. Thus, the catalysts exhibited better SO2 resistance.

Abstract:Various Mn-based catalysts for NO oxidation were prepared using MnOx as active compound, while TiO2 and Al2O3 were adopted as catalyst support. The performance of the catalysts was tested to study the effect of support on Mn-based catalyst activity. Performance of the catalysts followed as Mn0.4/Al > Mn0.2/Al > Mn0.4/Ti > Mn0.2/Ti > MnOx > Al2O3 on the whole, indicating the synergism of MnOx and Al2O3 for NO catalytic oxidation. Results were analyzed according to characterization data. Adsorbed oxygen on catalyst rather than lattice oxygen was detected as the active oxidizer for NO oxidation. As catalyst support, Al2O3 provided more sites to carry surface adsorbed oxygen than TiO2, resulting in the presence of more active oxygen on MnOx/Al2O3 than on MnOx/TiO2. Moreover, MnOx/Al2O3 possessed high surface area and pore volume, which greatly benefited the adsorption of NO on catalyst and further favored the oxidation of NO by active oxygen. All these advantages helped Mn0.4/Al exhibited the best catalytic efficiency.

Abstract:Mn-based catalysts have been demonstrated to possess good low-temperature activity for NH3-SCR of NO, and have attracted increasing attention and broad application prospects. However, the catalysts suffer from poisoning deactivation easily when SO2 and H2O exist in the reactant gases. In this paper, the poisoning mechanism of SO2 and H2O on Mn-based catalysts has been expounded. Besides, the review focuses on the progress of research on improving the sulfur and water resistance of Mn-based catalysts, which is summarized in three aspects: adding transitional metals additives, controlling the morphology of catalysts and changing the preparation method. Finally, the existing problems of Mn-based catalysts are pointed out, the suggestions for improvement are prospected, and then the prospect of future development of Mn-based catalysts is put forward.

Abstract:Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are a primary source of air pollutants from combustion of fossil fuels. Though Mn-Ce based catalysts exhibit superior low temperature activities, their water and SO2 tolerance is inferior to other metal oxide catalysts, due to their strong water adsorption and sulfate species formation tendency at low reaction temperatures. Herein, a confinement strategy was adopted to design and synthesize a novel Mn-Ce based catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3. The confined MnCeOx catalyst was assembled with a simple one pot method, using a mesoporous zeolite (ZSM-5) as the shell and Mn-Ce oxides as the active core (MnCeOx@Z5). Owing to the zeolite shell's shielding effect and the synergy between the alumina-silica zeolite shell's acidic properties and the mixed oxide cores' redox properties, the novel MnCeOx@Z5 catalyst displayed enhanced water and SO2 resistance as compared to the MnCeOx supported on ZSM-5 (MnCeOx/Z5) and its precursor (MnCeOx@Al-SiO2). Evidently, the zeolite sheath hinders sulfate species formation, and this phenomenon was further investigated by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (In situ DRIFTS). The novel shielding and acid-redox synergy effect/strategy adopted in this work can be applied to design other high performance deNOx catalysts for air pollution control.

Unusual positive effect of SO2 on Mn-Ce mixed-oxide catalyst for the SCR reaction of NOx with NH3

Abstract:A high-performance denitration catalyst based on Mn-Ce mixed-oxide derived from a specific Mn/Ce precursorwas fabricated by solvothermal method. It exhibited outstanding low-temperature activity, which achieved above 90% NOx conversion in the temperature of 150–310 °C. Remarkably, Mn-Ce mixed-oxide demonstrated a much better SO2 tolerance, in which the NOx conversion increased from 92.6% to 97.8% at 150 °C after introducing 200 ppm SO2. The synthesized Mn-Ce mixed-oxide has a porous structure with abundant chemisorbed oxygen spices and exposed active sites. In addition, the increased acidity and redox capacity enhanced the catalytic activity after introducing SO2. Meanwhile, the injection of SO2 separates NH3 adsorption sites from oxidation agents, inhibiting the unwanted oxidization of ammonia to nitrogen oxides. Furthermore, the reaction pathway on Mn-Ce mixed-oxide proved to be the L-H mechanism based on in situ DRIFTS. Thus, the synthesized Mn-Ce mixed oxide demonstrated an excellent denitration performance and the especially high SO2 tolerance, showing great potential for low-temperature NH3-SCR.

New Insight into the in Situ SO2 Poisoning Mechanism over Cu-SSZ-13 for the Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx with NH3

Abstract:To reveal the nature of SO2 poisoning over Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst under actual exhaust conditions, the catalyst was pretreated at 200 and 500 °C in a flow containing NH3, NO, O2, SO2, and H2O. Brunner−Emmet−Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction(XRD), thermo gravimetric analyzer (TGA), ultraviolet Raman spectroscopy (UV Raman), temperature-programmed reduction with H2 (H2-TPR), temperature-programmed desorption of NO+O2 (NO+O2-TPD), NH3-TPD, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS), and an activity test were utilized to monitor the changes of Cu-SSZ-13 before and after in situ SO2 poisoning. According to the characterization results, the types and generated amount of sulfated species were directly related to poisoning temperature. Three sulfate species, including (NH4)2SO4, CuSO4, and Al2(SO4)3, were found to form on CZ-S-200, while only the latter two sulfate species were observed over CZ-S-500. Furthermore, SO2 poisoning had a negative effect on low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activity, which was mainly due to the sulfation of active sites, including Z2Cu, ZCuOH, and Si-O(H)-Al. In contrast, SO2 poisoning had a positive effect on high-temperature SCR activity, owing to the inhibition of the NH3 oxidation reaction. The above findings may be a useful guideline to design excellent SO2-resistant Cu-based zeolite catalysts.
Fe-Mn/Al2O3 Catalysts for Low Temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3

Abstract:A series of Fe-Mn/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared and studied for low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 in a fixed-bed reactor. The effects of Fe and Mn on NO conversion and the deactivation of the catalysts were studied. N2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermal gravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the catalysts. The 8Fe-8Mn/Al2O3 catalyst gave 99% of NO conversion at 150 °C and more than 92.6% NO conversion was obtained in a wide low temperature range of 90–210 °C. XPS analysis demonstrated that the Fe3+ was the main iron valence state on the catalyst surface and the addition of Mn increased the accumulation of Fe on the surface. The higher specific surface area, enhanced dispersion of amorphous Fe and Mn, improved reduction properties and surface acidity, lower binding energy, higher Mn4+/Mn3+ ratio and more adsorbed oxygen species resulted in higher NO conversion for the 8Fe-8Mn/Al2O3 catalyst. In addition, the SCR activity of the 8Fe-8Mn/Al2O3 catalyst was only slightly decreased in the presence of H2O and SO2, which indicated that the catalyst had better tolerance to H2O and SO2. The reaction temperature was crucial for the SO2 resistance of catalyst and the decrease of catalytic activity caused by SO2 was mainly due to the sulfate salts formed on the catalyst.
Promotion of Mgo Addition on So2 Tolerance of Ag/Al2o3 for Selective Catalytic Reduction of Nox with Methane at Low Temperature

Abstract:The effect of MgO addition on SO2 tolerance of Ag/Al2O3 for the CH4-SCR was investigated. MgO addition significantly decreases the active temperature window of NOx conversion, and promotes the SO2 resistance of Ag/Al2O3 at low temperature range of 573–673K. Silver oxide particles are well dispersed and large silver crystals are present in Ag/MgAl2O4 catalyst. The slight decrease in catalytic activity over Ag/MgAl2O4 exposure to SO2 is attributed to the partially deactivation of alumina sites poisoned by SO2. MgO may effectively inhibit the competitive adsorption between NOx and SO2 in alumina sites, and enhance SO2 adsorption on the magnesia surface.

Abstract:Mn-based catalysts for the low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by NH3 can be strongly deactivated due to the generation of MnSO4 derived from upstream SO2 and H2O. In this study, a catalyst ar-chitecture based on a Ce-doped manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (Ce-OMS-2) was successfully synthesized to promote NH3-SCR activity and enhance SO2 tolerance at low temperatures. We investigated the role of Ce and its specific octahedral molecular sieve structure on the anti-SO2 poisoning effect of Ce-OMS-2. Maintaining the manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve structure with polyvalent manganese species and active oxygen species and the charge transfer between Mn and Ce via the Ce-O-Mn bond in the Ce-OMS-2 catalyst are found to be the key factors for the realization of excellent NH3-SCR activity and SO2 tolerance. In-depth in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS) show that the number of Bronsted acid sites in Ce-OMS-2 can also favor SO2 resistance. This study provides new insight into the mechanism for de-NOx activity and SO2 tolerance on Ce-OMS-2 catalyst and is beneficial for the design of anti-SO2 NH3-SCR catalysts.

Abstract:The MnOx-TiO2/MWCNTs nanocomposites were used as De-NOx catalysts to study the deep-rooted reason for the deactivation. Based on a series of characterization on as-prepared catalyst and poisoned catalyst, the results showed that the chief culprit for the deactivation is the micropores in the De-NOx catalyst. The formed ammonium (bi)sulfate in the micropores during the SCR reaction process could not be took away by the gas flow soon and then deposited on the catalyst surface gradually, and further covered the active sites. And the poisoned catalysts could be recovered partly rather than fully by heat treatment at 500 °C because of the decomposition of the ammonium (bi)sulfate and the phase transition of the TiO2.

Abstract:Mn-based catalysts are expected to be applied for removing NOx due to its excellent low-temperature activity. However, the practical use of these catalysts is extremely restricted with the co-poisoning of alkali metal and SO2 in the flue gas. Here the MnO2/TiO2 catalyst was employed to elucidate the co-poisoning mechanisms of K and SO2 for the low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO. The physicochemical properties of catalysts under different toxicity conditions were studied by experiments. The adsorption of NH3, SO2, NO, and K on active component (MnO2) and support (TiO2) was studied by density functional theory. This work unravels a promotion effect of support on the alkali and sulfur resistance. The SO2&K co-poisoning catalyst had higher SCR activity than the SO2-poisoned and K-poisoned catalyst alone. For a single toxic condition: (1) SO2 was preferentially bonded with the terminated O site of MnO2 inhibiting the dehydrogenation of NH3 and redox cycle. (2) The presence of Lewis base (K atom) on the catalyst decreased the binding energy of a Lewis base (NH3) and hindered the adsorption of NH3. For the synergistic effect of K and SO2, the majority of K adsorbed on the support (TiO2) lead to increase alkalinity, which could promote the adsorption of SO2 on the TiO2 and reduce the toxicity of the active component (MnO2).

Abstract:Manganese oxides (MnOx) have attracted increasing attention in selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR) due to their excellent low-temperature catalytic activities. However, MnOx still suffer from poor resistance to SO2 and H2O in NH3-SCR. In particular, the irreversible poisoning of SO2 limits their practical applications in NH3-SCR. With the new regulations concerning the emission of SO2 gas, MnOx may be used for control over NOx (i.e. NO and NO2) emission in NH3SCR. This mini-review was devoted to challenges and opportunities of MnOx catalysts in NH3-SCR, which may be helpful for its practical application in NH3-SCR system.
Catalyst Tolerance to SO2 and Water Vapor of Mn Based Bimetallic Oxides for NO Deep Oxidation by Ozone

Abstract:Improving the catalyst stabilities under different conditions (water vapor, SO2, both water vapor and SO2) is important for industrial applications regarding catalytic NO deep oxidation by ozone. In this paper, Ce–Mn/SA and Fe–Mn/SA catalysts were selected to investigate the stabilities. The results showed that the Ce–Mn/SA exhibited excellent stability and resistance to SO2, while the Fe–Mn/SA only displayed excellent stability without moisture and SO2. Almost a 50% drop in efficiency was observed after deactivation by water vapor and water vapor together with SO2 for the two catalysts. The Fe–Mn/SA displayed inferior resistance to SO2. After stability testing with water vapor, the surface area, pore volume, and average pore diameter all decreased. The low adsorption energy of the H2O molecule resulted in the superior adsorption of water vapor, which occupied large amounts of active sites. XPS results showed that the ratio of Mn4+ and chemisorbed oxygen decreased after deactivation. Mn4+ favors NO oxidation, while Mn3+ is favorable for ozone decomposition. Therefore, better performance in NO deep oxidation by ozone requires relative balance distribution between Mn4+ and Mn3+. Interestingly, the TPD results showed that the NO desorption peak was unaffected and even increased a lot after water vapor stability testing. This could be attributed to the nitrates, formed by the N2O5 and H2O in liquid phase, that were adsorbed on the catalyst surface prior to NO, which contributes to a bigger NO desorption peak with lower NO adsorption ability. The trace of sulfate formed after SO2 stability testing was verified from TPD and TGA results, but it was not observed from the FTIR spectra, indicating the sulfate species formed during the ozonation process may not exist on the catalyst surface.

Abstract:SO2 poisoning of NH3-SCR catalysts at low temperature (< 300 degrees C) is still an austere challenge. In this work, gamma-Fe2O3 was taken as a model catalyst and the effect of reaction temperature on the catalytic activity in the presence of SO2 were fully revealed. SO2 introduction has no negative effect on the activity at 300 degrees C, which gradually improves with the extension of time. While for 225-275 degrees C, the activity decreases firstly and then increases slowly. The formatted sulfate species inhibits the adsorption of NOx, cuts off L-H reaction pathway and leads to the initial decline. While the deposited ammonium bisulfate (ABS) can be consumed continuously by NO + O-2, implying the formation and consumption of ABS have reached a dynamic equilibrium. Moreover, the formation of ferric sulfate species results in the enhancement of surface acidity, which leads to the promotion of the E-R reaction pathway and further facilitates the increase of activity.
