Abstract:This work focuses on flame structure analysis and composition space modeling of a multidimensional premixed hydrogen flame transitioning from a laminar stable condition to a thermodiffusively unstable state. Specifically, budget and a priori analyses are conducted based on a detailed chemistry simulation of a 2D expanding, thermodiffusively unstable hydrogen flame, and the recurring issues for modeling dif-ferential diffusion, the strain rate and curvature in the thermodiffusively unstable flame are addressed in a single newly proposed flamelet tabulation method. The model is based on recently developed self-contained strained-curved premixed flamelet equations in composition space (Scholtissek et al., 2019, CNF), which inherently incorporate the interactions among differential diffusion, the strain rate and cur-vature. The validity of the newly proposed flamelet tabulation method is evaluated based on the rep-resentative strongly strained-curved flamelets extracted from the reference simulation, featuring wide ranges of strain rates and curvatures. The advance realized in the proposed flamelet model is confirmed by comparing it with a conventional flamelet tabulation method. Through the budget analysis, the effects of curvature on the diffusion along the flame front (i.e., tangential diffusion) are quantified. Through the a priori analysis, the suitability of the proposed flamelet tabulation method in predicting differential dif-fusion is confirmed. For the prediction of the strain rate and curvature, it is found that introducing the strain rate and curvature themselves as the trajectory variables does not necessarily improve the predic-tion accuracy in the reaction zone, compared to the flamelet model based on the 1D freely-propagating premixed flame with differential diffusion. To remedy this, the trajectory variables that can characterize the flame structure's internal response to the strain rate and curvature are identified. The results show that the thermo-chemical variables in the thermodiffusively unstable flame at atmospheric pressure can be accurately predicted by the newly introduced trajectory variables based on the 1D strained-curved flamelet equations.(c) 2021 The Combustion Institute. Abstract:In this work, the flame structures of the recent Darmstadt turbulent premixed/stratified flame series with 20% volume fraction H 2 addition (Schneider et al., PCI, 2019) are analyzed using flamelet tabulated manifolds. Three different methane/hydrogen flames (MHFs) with increasing complexity are studied. The effects of differential diffusion, stretch and stratification on the applicability of the flamelet model are investigated in detail. Specifically, to investigate the differential diffusion effects, three different modeling approaches are considered, in which the diffusion fluxes are calculated using the multi-component (MC), mixture-averaged (MA) and unity Lewis number (Le1) approaches. To investigate stretch effects, a strained premixed flamelet (SPF) model is proposed, in which the flame's internal response to stretch is characterized with an additional tabulation coordinate. A double-conditioning analysis is conducted for different flame series. The dataset is conditioned on both the local equivalence ratio and local stratification to analyze the coupling effects of stratification and differential diffusion on the flame structure. Hydrodynamic theory of premixed flames propagating in closed vessels: flame speed and Markstein lengths

Abstract:A hydrodynamic theory of premixed flame propagation within closed vessels is developed assuming the flame is much thinner than all other fluid dynamic lengths. In this limit, the flame is confined to a surface separating the unburned mixture from burned combustion products, and propagates at a speed determined from the analysis of its internal structure. Unlike freely propagating flames that propagate under nearly isobaric conditions, combustion in a closed vessel results in continuous increases in pressure, burning rate and flame temperature, and a progressive decrease in flame thickness. The flame speed is shown to depend on the voluminal stretch rate, which measures the deformation of a volume element of the flame zone, and on the rate of pressure rise. Both effects are modulated by pressure-dependent Markstein numbers that depend on heat release and mixture properties while capturing the effects of temperature-dependent transport and stoichiometry. The model applies to flames of arbitrary shape propagating in general flows, laminar or turbulent, within vessels of general configurations. The main limitation of hydrodynamic flame theories is the assumption that variations inside the flame zone due to chemistry or turbulence, which could potentially alter its internal structure, are physically unresolved. Nonetheless, the theory, deduced from physical first principles, identifies the various mechanisms involved in the combustion process as demonstrated in detailed discussions of planar flames propagating in rectangular channels and spherically expanding flames in spherical vessels. It also enables the construction of instructive models to numerically simulate the evolution of multi-dimensional and corrugated flames under confinement.

Abstract:Large-eddy simulations are conducted for Darmstadt turbulent methane-hydrogen flames (MHFs, 20%H2+80%CH4 in volume fraction). Two different flames are investigated: one without stratification at the fuel inlets (MHF5) and the other with stratification (MHF7). Two different flamelet libraries are generated: one based on the unity Lewis number assumption (Le1) and the other based on the mixture-averaged (MA) approach. Further, two different techniques are adopted to access the flamelet libraries: one solving the transport equations for the six Raman-accessible species mass fractions (M1), and the other solving the transport equations for the three trajectory variables directly (M2). The heat loss effects in the pilot tube are investigated by comparing the adiabatic and non-adiabatic flamelet models. The suitability of the different modeling approaches is evaluated by comparing the simulation results with the available experimental data. The results show that the heat transfer in the pilot tube has significant effects on the variation trends of the gas temperature and the flame position. Overall, M2 performs better than M1 in predicting the thermo-chemical quantities, regardless of diffusion modeling. M2 coupled with different flamelet libraries makes good predictions for both flames in the upstream and inner downstream regions. However, in the outer downstream region only M2 coupled with the unity Lewis number assumption generates good predictions for MHF7, while the other modeling approaches over-predict the gas temperature and CO2 mass fraction for both MHF5 and MHF7. The reason for the different performances of the flamelet models is explored by analyzing the differential diffusion parameter.
Multi-dimensional and Transient Effects on Flamelet Modeling for Turbulent Pulverized Coal Combustion

Abstract:The transport along mixture fraction iso-surfaces is generally denoted as multi-dimensional effect, which is not considered in the classical one-dimensional (1D) flamelet model. This work investigates multi-dimensional and transient effects on flamelet modeling for turbulent pulverized coal combustion. To this end, instantaneous flamelets are extracted from a fully resolved 3D DNS database generated for a turbulent pulverized coal flame with a 33 array of particles. At first, the importance of transport along the iso-mixture fraction surface is analyzed based on the flamelet regime diagram. By this means, the flamelet regime of the local combustion is clarified. Then, the relevance of transient effects is investigated using budget analyses for transient terms in both physical space and composition space. Particularly, the significance of the Eulerian and Lagrangian transient terms is quantified. It is found that compared to the other transient processes, the transient change in the inner flame structure, i.e., the Lagrangian transient process, is dominant. Interestingly, the budget analyses show that the Lagrangian transient term can be partially recovered by the steady flamelet model. The findings obtained from the flamelet regime diagram and the budget analyses are consistent with the flamelet solutions where the multi-dimensional and transient terms are included in/excluded from the flamelet equations. The generalized flamelet equations including both multi-dimensional and transient terms can effectively reproduce the instantaneous flamelets in the DNS. Finally, a priori analyses are conducted to evaluate the multi-dimensional and transient effects on the final performance of the flamelet model. Overall, the a priori results are consistent with findings obtained from the budget analyses.

Abstract:Hydrothermal flame is a fast oxidation process that occurs in supercritical aqueous environment. Flame structure and stabilization mechanism of laminar non-premixed hydrothermal flames (under a pressure of 25.0 MPa) are studied via homogeneous auto-ignition calculations and two-dimensional high-fidelity numerical simulations, and the effects of oxidizer temperature are investigated. The simulations are conducted with a low-Mach number reacting flow solver where the numerical framework for real-fluid properties are implemented. The bi-branchial edge flame structures are investigated in detail via the distribution of key intermediate species. An isolated reactive region, characterized by the existence of moderate radical H, is observed at the upstream of the stabilization point in the fuel-rich side. Transport budget analysis is conducted on the simulation results. With a high oxidizer temperature, the hydrothermal flame is mainly stabilized by auto-ignition. And with the decreasing of oxidizer temperature, the contribution of flame propagation to flame stabilization increases. The isolated reactive region is further identified as a propagation-dominated reaction zone, which is facilitated by radical H2O2.
Turbulent Flame Speed Scaling for Expanding Flames with Markstein Diffusion Considerations

Abstract:In this work we clarify the role of Markstein diffusivity on turbulent flame speed and it's scaling, from analysis and experimental measurements on constant-pressure expanding flames propagating in near isotropic turbulence. For all C0-C4 hydrocarbon-air mixtures presented in this work and recently published C8 data from Leeds, the normalized turbulent flame speed data of individual mixtures approximately follows the recent theoretical and experimental $Re_{T,f}^{0.5} $ scaling, where the average radius is the length scale and thermal diffusivity is the transport property. We observe that for a constant $Re_{T,f} $, the normalized turbulent flame speed decreases with increasing Markstein Number. This could be explained by considering Markstein diffusivity as the large wavenumber, flame surface fluctuation dissipation mechanism. As originally suggested by the theory, replacing thermal diffusivity with Markstein diffusivity in the turbulence Reynolds number definition above, the present and Leeds dataset could be scaled by the new $Re_{T,M}^{0.5} $irrespective of the fuel considered, equivalence ratio, pressure and turbulence intensity for positive Mk flames over a large range of Damköhler numbers.

Abstract:Fully resolved numerical simulations with finite rate chemical reactions and detailed molecular diffusion have been conducted for a series of laminar premixed hydrogen-air flames under atmospheric condition. The objective of the work is to study the influence of unsteadiness of the flow on the local and global flame dynamics. Two equivalence ratios with U = 0:5 and 4 are considered, leading to a negative and a positive Markstein number Ma(0) at steady-state condition. The flames are excited with oscillating inflows at predefined frequencies f to assess the effect of unsteady flame stretch on flame dynamics. The Damkohler number, defined by the ratio of the inverse frequency of the oscillations and flame transit time, is used to characterize the interactions between the flow and the chemical reactions based on their time scales. For both lean and rich flame conditions, the local flame speed Sl is less sensitive to the flame stretch in an unsteady flow, which results in a reduced magnitude of the Markstein number |(Ma)over bar|. In addition, |(Ma)over bar| is smallest when the time scale of the flow approaches the intrinsic time scale of the flame (Da asymptotic to 1). The global consumption speed St, computed from integration of the fuel burning rate over the whole computational domain, yields a phase delay and a damped oscillation with respect to the unsteady inflow. The phase delay increases with for decreasing Da, whereas the reverse trend has been found for the oscillation amplitude of St. The flame is not able to follow the unsteady flow or adjust its flame surface at high excitation frequencies with Da < 1, and vice versa in the low frequency range with Da >> 1. An efficiency factor E has been introduced to model the damped response of the flame due to flow unsteadiness, which reproduces the asymptotic behavior of E -> 0 at Da << 1 and E -> 1 at Da >> 1. The simulation results reveal that the fluctuation time scale plays a significant role in elucidating the effect of flame-flow interaction, which should be considered for turbulent combustion modeling. Abstract:Spherical flame initiation and propagation with thermally sensitive intermediate kinetics are studied analytically within the framework of large activation energy and quasi-steady assumptions. A correlation describing different flame regimes and transitions among the ignition kernels, flame balls, propagating spherical flames, and planar flames is derived. Based on this correlation, spherical flame propagation and initiation are then investigated. The flame propagation speed, Markstein length, and critical ignition power and radius are found to strongly depend on the Lewis numbers of fuel and radical and the heat of reaction. For spherical flame propagation, the trajectory is shown to change significantly with the fuel Lewis number and a C-shaped solution curve of flame propagation speed as a function of flame radius is observed for large fuel Lewis numbers. The Markstein length is shown to increase/decrease monotonically with the fuel/radical Lewis number. The influence of stretch on flame propagation (i.e. the absolute value of Markstein length) is found to decrease with the heat of reaction. For spherical flame initiation, the critical ignition power and radius are shown to increase with the fuel Lewis number and to decrease with the radical Lewis number and heat of reaction. Three different flame initiation regimes are observed and discussed. Furthermore, the validity of theoretical prediction is confirmed by transient numerical simulations including thermal expansion and detailed chemistry.
Real-fluid Effects on Laminar Diffusion and Premixed Hydrothermal Flames

Abstract:This paper is aimed to investigate the real-fluid effects on both diffusion and premixed laminar hydrothermal flames. The real-fluid effects are examined in three aspects, including the equation of state (EOS), thermodynamic, and transport properties. Results show that, for diffusion flames, the introduction of non-ideal EOS is the most significant adjustment as it modifies the flame location, while the correction of thermodynamic and transport properties has minor impacts on the flame structure. For premixed flames, the real-fluid models have limited influence on the temperature and species distributions but significantly affect the flame speed, which is mainly due to the density modification of the unburned mixture by the real-fluid EOS. Finally, the Lewis numbers are derived and the evaluation results show that laminar hydrothermal flames are sensitive to the Lewis number assumption and the non-unity Lewis number method can properly describe the differential diffusion effects for hydrothermal flames. Abstract:The measurements on flame structure and burning velocities of C3H8/air, CH4/air and CO/H2/air turbulent premixed flames were conducted. Various experimental conditions for these mixtures were considered to understand the molecular and thermal diffusion process in turbulent flame, which was referred to the fuel effects. The fuel effects are interpreted as local burning velocity variation caused by molecular and thermal diffusivity with stretch effect. Leading points concept is a promising scaling approach to incorporate the fuel effects in turbulent flames recently. In this article, data across a variety of equivalence ratio and hydrogen fractions were obtained using Bunsen burner. Flame front was detected with OH-PLIF technique and turbulent burning velocity ST referred to leading edge was derived. A new leading points characteristic speed SL,LP was presented invoking both negative and positive Markstein number mixtures, revising the previous model in literature which is only suitable for negative Markstein number fuels. The turbulent burning velocity ST under relatively weak turbulence intensity in this study and data of high turbulence intensity, high pressure from literature were renormalized with SL,LP instead of SL,0 based on leading points concept, where SL,0 is the unstretched laminar flame speed. The results show that all the data sets were collapsed well which validated the significance of SL,LP in normalizing ST of different mixtures. An empirical formula for turbulent burning velocity correlation was obtained as . This formula is similar to that of Kobayashi; however, it shows superiority in incorporating the fuel effects.

Abstract:Lean turbulent premixed hydrogen/air flames have substantially increased flame speeds, commonly attributed to differential diffusion effects. In this work, the effect of turbulence on lean hydrogen combustion is studied through Direct Numerical Simulation using detailed chemistry and detailed transport. Simulations are conducted at six Karlovitz numbers and four integral length scales. A general expression for the burning efficiency is proposed which depends on the conditional mean chemical source term and gradient of a progress variable, and the amount of superadiabatic burning. At a fixed Karlovitz number, the normalized turbulent flame speed and area both increase almost linearly with the integral length scale ratio. The effect on the mean source term profile is minimal, indicating that the increase in flame speed can solely be attributed to the increase in flame area. At a fixed integral length scale, both the flame speed and area first increase with Karlovitz number before decreasing. The qualitative observations and trends do not change when Soret effects are neglected. Specifically, neglecting Soret diffusion is shown to reduce the flame speed, area, and burning efficiency. At higher Karlovitz numbers, the diffusivity is enhanced due to penetration of turbulence into the reaction zone, significantly dampening differential diffusion effects. Novelty and Significance Lean premixed hydrogen flames are subject to thermodiffusive instabilities, which can lead to system level instabilities such as flashback. A comprehensive study of the thermodiffusively unstable turbulent flames with detailed chemistry and detailed transport (including Soret diffusion) was conducted across a wide range of turbulent intensities and integral length scales. Varying these two parameters independently was necessary to isolate the effects of large- and small-scale turbulence. Using these results, we propose a general expression for the burning efficiency to explain the relationship between the turbulence intensity, flame speed, and flame area. This work is an important step in developing predictive models which can aid in the design of practical combustion devices.

Abstract:Flame configurations, flame-front cellular instability, and extinction of propane/air mixtures in the stagnation-point flow are experimentally studied for their dependence on downstream heat loss, preferential diffusion, and flame stretch. Boundaries for lean- and rich-limit extinction, stabilization of corrugated flames, and local extinction caused by sharp curvatures are mapped for varying propane concentrations and freestream velocities. Flame location and temperature at extinction are determined as functions of stagnation surface temperature, extent of preheating, propane concentration, and freestream velocity.
Quasi-Steady Diffusion Flame Theory with Variable Specific Heats and Transport Coefficients

Abstract:A theory is developed to account for the variable nature of the specific heats C and the transport coefficients of thermal and mass diffusion, λ and D, in quasi-steady one-dimensional diffusion flames, using bipropellant droplet combustion as an illustration. In the theory C, λ and D are all temperature dependent whereas C and λ are further concentration-weighted; consequently all the existing variable-property droplet combustion models are special cases of the present generalized model. By allowing these coefficients to assume realistic functional forms, explicit expressions are derived for the concentration-weighted coefficients, the temperature and species profiles, the mass burning rate, and the flame-front standoff ratio. Predicted results yield improved, yet much less ambiguous, agreement with experimental observations. Finally it is shown that such good agreement can also be achieved by utilizing a simplified, temperature-independent, model and by evaluating the concentration-weighted coefficients at the arithmetic mean of the boundary temperatures in each diffusive-convective region.
Effects of hydrogen addition on the propagation of spherical methane/air flames: A computational study

Abstract:A computational study is performed to investigate the effects of hydrogen addition on the fundamental characteristics of propagating spherical methane/air flames at different conditions. The emphasis is placed on the laminar flame speed and Markstein length of methane/hydrogen dual fuel. It is found that the laminar flame speed increases monotonically with hydrogen addition, while the Markstein length changes non-monotonically with hydrogen blending: it first decreases and then increases. Consequently, blending of hydrogen to methane/air and blending methane to hydrogen/air both destabilize the flame. Furthermore, the computed results are compared with measured data available in the literature. Comparison of the computed and measured laminar flame speeds shows good agreement. However, the measured Markstein length is shown to strongly depend on the flame radii range utilized for data processing and have very large uncertainty. It is found that the experimental results cannot correctly show the trend of Markstein length changing with the hydrogen blending level and pressure and hence are not reliable. Therefore, the computed Markstein length, which is accurate, should be used in combustion modeling to include the flame stretch effect on flame speed.

Abstract:Flame propagation in narrow gaps can manifest intrinsic instabilities with appearance of wrinkles/cells on the reaction front, which is attributed to various physical mechanisms. For instance, the buoyancy effect is believed to be able to either stabilize or destabilize the reaction front depending on the flame propagation direction. In this paper, an experimental study of propagation of premixed methane-air flames at a variety of mixture equivalence ratios (from fuel-lean to fuel-rich) in a narrow gap (12 mm) formed by two parallel plates (termed Hele-Shaw chamber) is conducted. The magnitude of the gravitational component along the direction of flame propagation is manipulated via altering the inclined angle of the rotatable combustion chamber. Evolution features of flame-surface shapes during the propagation process under various conditions are recorded using high-speed imaging. Results show that generations of the flame wrinkles/cells are mainly driven by the Darrieus-Landau (DL) and Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability. For slowly propagating flames at an extremely fuel-lean condition, the RT is a pronounced mechanism, showing a stabilizing effect for downward propagating flames and a destabilizing effect for upward propagating ones. For the fast burning system at higher equivalence ratios, the DL plays a predominant role in generating instabilities among all the chamber inclined angles while the RT's effect is noticeably weakened.

Abstract:Axisymmetric simulations of a liquid rocket engine are performed using a delayed detached-eddy-simulation (DDES) turbulence model with the Compressible Flamelet Progress Variable (CFPV) combustion model. Three different pressure instability domains are simulated: completely unstable, semi-stable, and fully stable. The different instability domains are found by varying the combustion chamber and oxidizer post length. Laminar flamelet solutions with a detailed chemical mechanism are examined. The $\beta$ Probability Density Function (PDF) for the mixture fraction and Dirac $\delta$ PDF for both the pressure and the progress variable are used. A coupling mechanism between the Heat Release Rate (HRR) and the pressure in an unstable cycle is demonstrated. Local extinction and reignition is investigated for all the instability domains using the full S-curve approach. A monotonic decrease in the amount of local extinctions and reignitions occurs when pressure oscillation amplitude becomes smaller. The flame index is used to distinguish between the premixed and non-premixed burning mode in different stability domains. An additional simulation of the unstable pressure oscillation case using only the stable flamelet burning branch of the S-curve is performed. Better agreement with experiments in terms of pressure oscillation amplitude is found when the full S-curve is used.

Effects of Integral Scale on Darrieus–Landau Instability in Turbulent Premixed Flames

Abstract:Previous studies have revealed the existence of distinct regimes of DL-stable and unstable turbulent flames, depending on whether the DL instability could be minimized or not. The mechanism of how mixture composition, flame macroscale and turbulence intensity, etc. act on DL instability has been extensively studied. Even though, the role played by turbulent length scale on DL instability is still unclear. The present study has been experimentally focused on the effect of turbulent integral scale on DL instability of premixed turbulent Bunsen flames. Flame fronts of C3H8/air mixture (ϕ = 0.8) under different turbulence conditions are captured by OH-PLIF technique. It is observed that the DL-unstable flames, obtained at relatively large integral scale and with cusps observed on the flame fronts, transform to be DL-stable flames with planar or disorderly wrinkled flame fronts as the integral scale decreases, indicating the indispensable role of integral scale on DL instability. These cusps on DL-unstable flame fronts decrease flame surface density while enlarge flame volume. Turbulent burning velocities of DL-unstable flames are augmented compared to DL-stable flames, leading to a similar dual-propagation model as observed in literatures. The threshold where turbulence shadows DL instability is analyzed by upgrading a previous model of [Phys. Rev. E 84 (2011) 026322]. The modified model is more reliable to demonstrate the DL-stable and unstable regimes in the Peters-Borghi’s diagram.
