Abstract:We investigate the tailoring effect of the point vortices on the foci of the circular Airy vortex beam (CAVB). Two optical vortices (OVs) with same or opposite topological charges (TCs) are symmetrically loaded on the beam. It is found that the loading distance between these two OVs (denoted as d(v)) can significantly tailor the auto-focusing behaviour of the beam. For two OVs with same TCs, as d(v )increases from 0 to infinite, the intensity pattern at the focal plane changes from a ring to a bright spot. For opposite OVs, when d(v) is near 0 or very large, there is a bright foci. But within a certain range, two foci are generated at the focal plane. Good agreements have been achieved between simulations and experiments. We qualitatively explain the tailoring phenomena from the perspective of the inward energy flow of the main ring of CAVB and the interaction between two OVs. The tailoring effect of d(v) of the two OVs on the focal pattern may have potential applications in micromanipulation, communication and other fields.

Abstract:It was reported that whispering gallery cavities designed by conformal transformation optics can support high-Q resonant modes with emission directionality. Intrinsically, these cavities have gradient index profiles implementing conformal mappings in physical space. In this paper, using the linear coordinate transformation, we propose another design scheme of whispering gallery cavities with (piecewise-) homogeneous, anisotropic index profile. We numerically show that so-designed cavities are also able to support high-Q whispering gallery modes with directional far-field emission patterns. We verify such characteristics by using a phase space representation (called the Poincaré Husimi function) of the intracavity wave function.

Abstract:The transmission properties of light through metal films with compound periodic subwavelength hole arrays is numerically investigated by using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The sharp dips in the transmission bands, together with the suppression of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) (0, 1) peak, are found when two square holes in every unit cell are arranged asymmetrically along the polarization direction of the incident light. However, the shape of transmission spectra is not sensitive to the symmetry if the holes are arranged perpendicular to the propagation direction of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The physics origin of these phenomena is explained qualitatively by the phase resonance of SPPs. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Optical interference and the related effects are key elements which could exhibit the properties of both classical and quantum optical systems. Usually, the interference between different optical paths may produce intriguing effects, such as the electromagnetically induced transparent (EIT) and so on. In this work, we study the interference effects in directly coupled whispering-gallery mode (WGM) micro-resonators, in which the emergence of EIT and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) could be observed. We find by tuning the coupling strength between the resonators, the modulation phase may control the appearance and disappearance of EIT (EIA). Furthermore, we prove the existence of fast and slow light, and propose a scheme for effective switching between them. This work provides a new strategy for obtaining slow light and quantum storage in the WGM micro-resonators.

Abstract:We theoretically describe and study coupling between two whispering-gallery-mode microcavities through a side coupled fiber taper. The two microcavities can couple to each other bidirectionally with only one fiber taper waveguide due to the modal coupling between a pair of whispering-gallery modes traveling in opposite directions. By choosing appropriate physical parameters, some interesting spectra, such as electromagnetically-induced transparency-like coherent transmission and band-like reflection, can be obtained in such a system. Slow light is discussed in this paper as a direct application of the coupled microresonator structure. This structure also has potential application in coupled cavity quantum electrodynamics.
Anomalous Optical Whispering-Gallery Mode Induced by Rotational Symmetry Breaking

Abstract:We report that an anomalous optical whispering-gallery mode (WGM) emerges with self-focusing field patterns in a nearly spherical cavity of ultrahigh-Q factor, driven by rotational symmetry breaking and positive surface curvature. The positive Gaussian curvature modulates the evolution of light fields in the vicinity of a microsized surface, which is revealed by transformation optics theory. The geometry-induced self-focusing effect is resolved by the strongly confined field patterns of ultrahigh-Q modes. Furthermore, the nondiffracting interferometric field patterns with twist-chain-like profiles are observed by leveraging the degenerate-mode excitations in the surface of the microsphere cavity. The morphology-dependent WGMs can have potential applications in generating multiple orbital angular momentum beams when integrated with grating structures at the cavity surface. This work not only bridges the transformation optics and microcavity photonics in curved geometries but also provides a new route to on-chip optical field manipulation and light-matter interactions.

Abstract:The mechanism of unidirectional emission of high Q Whispering Gallery mode in deformed circular micro- cavities is studied and firstly presented in this paper. In phase space, light in the chaotic sea leaks out the cavity through the refraction regions, whose positions are controlled by stable islands. Moreover, the positions of fixed points according to the critical line in unstable manifolds mainly determines the light leak out from which refraction region and the direction of the emission. Abstract:In this study, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like in a single conical microresonator (CMR) fabricated by combining arc discharge and pull method. Benefited from the gradually changing diameter along the longitudinal axis of the CMR, the resonance frequency can be tuned when the CMR coupled by a tapered fiber waveguide. The characteristic of internally-tuning in our CMR is confirmed theoretically, numerically and experimentally. In particular, Fano and EIT-like effect with a quality (Q) factor are achieved by scanning the varied diameter carefully originating from approximate two resonant frequencies in a wavelength apart. In addition, these experimental observations can be well fitted with the coupled mode theory. These findings may open new avenues for realizing high-Q EIT, which pave the way for an enhanced approach in bio-sensing applications, nonlinear optics and optical switching devices.

Abstract:Halting and storing light by infinitely decelerating its speed, in the absence of any form of external control, is extremely di+/-cult to imagine. Here we present a theoretical prediction of a controllable optical black hole composed of a planar left-handed material slab. We reveal a criterion that the effective round-trip propagation length in one zigzag path is zero, which brings light to a complete standstill. Both theory and ab initio simulation demonstrate that this optical black hole has degrees flexible controllability for the speed of light. Surprisingly, the ab initio simulations reveal that our scheme has degrees flexible controllability for swallowing, holding, and releasing light.

Abstract:Graphene has great potential for enhancing light-matter interactions in a two-dimensional regime due to surface plasmons with low loss and strong light confinement. Further utilization of graphene in nanophotonics relies on the precise control of light localization properties. Here, we demonstrate the tailoring of electromagnetic field localizations in the mid-infrared region by precisely shaping the graphene into nanostructures with different geometries. We generalize the phenomenological cavity model and employ nanoimaging techniques to quantitatively calculate and experimentally visualize the two-dimensional electromagnetic field distributions within the nanostructures, which indicate that the electromagnetic field can be shaped into specific patterns depending on the shapes and sizes of the nanostructures. Furthermore, we show that the light localization performance can be further improved by reducing the sizes of the nanostructures, where a lateral confinement of λ0/180 of the incidence light can be achieved. The electromagnetic field localizations within a nanostructure with a specific geometry can also be modulated by chemical doping. Our strategies can, in principle, be generalized to other two-dimensional materials, therefore providing new degrees of freedom for designing nanophotonic components capable of tailoring two-dimensional light confinement over a broad wavelength range.
Transverse mode tailoring in a quasi-imaging high-finesse femtosecond enhancement cavity

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-finesse femtosecond enhancement cavity with an on-axis obstacle. By inserting a wire with a width of 5% of the fundamental mode diameter, the finesse of F = 3400 is only slightly reduced to F = 3000. The low loss is due to the degeneracy of transverse modes, which allows for exciting a circulating field distribution avoiding the obstacle. We call this condition quasi-imaging. The concept could be used for output coupling of intracavity-generated higher-order harmonics through an on-axis opening in one of the cavity mirrors.
Observation of Miniaturized Bound States in the Continuum with Ultra-High Quality Factors

Abstract:Light trapping is a constant pursuit in photonics because of its importance in science and technology. Many mechanisms have been explored, including the use of mirrors made of materials or structures that forbid outgoing waves, and bound states in the continuum that are mirror-less but based on topology. Here we report a compound method, combining lateral mirrors and bound states in the continuum in a cooperative way, to achieve a class of on-chip optical cavities that have high quality factors and small modal volumes. Specifically, light is trapped in the transverse direction by the photonic band gap of the lateral hetero-structure and confined in the vertical direction by the constellation of multiple bound states in the continuum. As a result, unlike most bound states in the continuum found in photonic crystal slabs that are de-localized Bloch modes, we achieve light-trapping in all three dimensions and experimentally demonstrate quality factors as high as Q=1.09×106 and modal volumes as low as V=17.74(λ0/n)3 in the telecommunication regime. We further prove the robustness of our method through the statistical study of multiple fabricated devices. Our work provides a new method of light trapping, which can find potential applications in photonic integration, nonlinear optics and quantum computing.

Abstract:Asymmetric microcavities supporting Whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) are of great significance for on-chip optical information processing. We define asymmetric microcavities on topologically curved surfaces, where the geodesic light trajectories completely reconstruct the cavity mode features. The quality factors of the lossy chaotic and island modes in flat cavities can be increased by up to ~200 times by the space curvature. Strong and weak coupling between modes of very different origins occur when the space curvature brings them into resonance, leading to a fine tailoring of the cavity photon energy and lifetime. Finally, we prove that by varying the overall loss, an exceptional point can be clearly observed at which both the cavity photon energy and lifetime become degenerate. Our work is at the crosspoint of optical chaotic dynamics, non-Hermitian physics and geodesic optical devices, and would open the novel area of geodesic microcavity photonics.

Gravitational lensing and tunneling of mechanical waves in synthetic curved spacetime

Abstract:Black holes are considered among the most fascinating objects that exist in our universe, since in the classical formalism nothing, even no light, can escape from their vicinity due to gravity. The gravitational potential causes the light to bend towards the hole, which is known by gravitational lensing. Here we present a synthetic realization of this phenomenon in a lab-scale two-dimensional network of mechanical circuits, based on analogous condensed matter formalism of Weyl semimetals with inhomogeneous nodal tilt profiles. Some of the underlying network couplings turn out as unstable and non-reciprocal, and are implemented by embedded active feedback interactions in an overall stabilized structure. We demonstrate the lensing by propagating mechanical wavepackets through the network with a programmed funnel-like potential, achieving wave bending towards the circle center. We then demonstrate the versatility of our platform by reprogramming it to mimic quantum tunneling of particles through the event horizon, known by Hawking radiation, achieving an exceptional correspondence to the original mass loss rate within the hole. The network couplings and the potential can be further reprogrammed to realize other curvatures and associated relativistic phenomena.

Abstract:Optical microcavities with whispering‐gallery modes (WGMs) have large potential and, in particular, those with a tubular geometry have attracted increasing attention due to their special geometry and interesting properties such as trimmed resonant modes, simplicity as fluidic channels, three‐dimensionally (3D) mode confinement, unique evanescent wave, and so on. Optical microcavities with the tubular geometry meet the challenge of assembly of conductive, semiconductive and insulating materials into a tubular geometry, thus spurring multifunctional applications to optofluidic devices, optical microdevices like microlasers, and bio/chemical sensors. Fabrication methods such as the fiber‐drawing method, rolled‐up nanotechnology, electrospin technique, and template‐assistant method have been developed to address the various requirements. These tubular optical microcavities enable researchers to explore and construct novel optical microdevices for a wide range of potential applications. This review describes the tubular optical microcavities from the perspectives of theoretical consideration, optical characterization, and potential applications.
Shadows, Quasinormal Modes, and Optical Appearances of Black Holes in Horndeski Theory

Abstract:This work describes the motion of photons in black hole (BH) spacetimes within the framework of Horndeski theory. We focus on the shadows, quasinormal modes (QNMs) and optical appearances of BHs surrounded by geometrically thin accretion disks. The QNMs of BHs are calculated by the WKB method and the eikonal limit, respectively. Using Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of $\mathrm{M} 87^*$ and $\mathrm{Sgr} \mathrm{A}^*$, we can constrain the parameter in Horndeski theory to a small range. Based on the constraint, we obtain the frequency ranges of the fundamental modes for $\mathrm{M} 87^*$ and $\mathrm{Sgr} \mathrm{A}^*$ in Horndeski theory. By exploring the optical appearances of BHs, we find that for the current resolution of the EHT, it primarily captures direct emission. This work advances our understanding of the observational characteristics of BHs in Horndeski theory and constrains Horndeski theory by EHT observations of $\mathrm{M} 87^*$ and $\mathrm{Sgr} \mathrm{A}^*$.
