Abstract:In order to reduce the impact force of the legged hydraulic-robot when it is driving on the ground, a new method based on magnetorheological technology is proposed for damping control of hydraulic mechanical legs in this paper. Firstly, the structure of hydraulic-driven leg with magnetorheological fluid (MRF) damper is designed, and the magnetic field simulation analysis of MRF damper is carried out to verify the rationality of magnetic circuit. Then the effects of different damping ratios on the dynamic performance of valve-controlled cylinder system are analyzed by theoretical modeling. Further, the co-simulation modeling of MRF damper and valve-controlled cylinder is established based on AMESIM to analyze the vibration reduction effect under impact force. Finally, the experiments of the hydraulic system designed in this paper are carried out under step load and triangular-wave load to obtain the system output displacement and pressure under two kinds of loads. Compared with the results without MRF damper, it is found that the new method can reduce the increase of pressure impact by 82% and almost eliminate the pressure fluctuation in the high pressure chamber of hydraulic cylinder.

Abstract:The existing rehabilitation robots are not compliant enough, which can easily lead to the secondary injury of patients. Magnetorheological fluid (MRF) can be used to change the damping force of the mechanism and then is applied to the compliant mechanism because it changes its yield stress with the change of magnetic field. In this study, a rotating magnetorheological fluid damper was designed and its mechanical model was established to calculate its output torque. A magnetic field simulation of the designed rotating magnetorheological fluid damper was analyzed. The relation between the magnetic field of the MRF in the damper and the input current was investigated, which can obtain the output torque of the rotating magnetorheological fluid damper by controlling the input current. Finally, a prototype of rotating magnetorheological fluid damper and a 1-DOF ankle rehabilitation robot based on the rotating magnetorheological fluid damper were built to test the performance of designed damper and conduct rehabilitation training.

Abstract:Traditional high-rigidity robots are difficult to meet the safety of human-machine interaction and the self-adaptability of complex environments. This paper proposed a new design method of variable stiffness flexible actuator for robot joints based on magnetorheological fluid, and completed relevant experiments. The magnetic field simulation results of the magnetorheological flexible actuator were analyzed, and the physical design was optimized to determine the final structure of the magnetorheological flexible actuator. The simulation model of the magnetorheological flexible actuator is established in Matlab/Simulink, so as to obtain the relationship between excitation current and maximum output torque of the magnetorheological flexible actuator. Finally, to analyze the effect of variable stiffness, an experimental prototype and a control system were fabricated to test the maximum torque of flexible actuator under different current. The results of position step test and collision test show that the new type of flexible actuator based on magnetorheological fluid designed realizes the function of variable stiffness, and its control system also meets the requirements.

Abstract:In view of the shortcomings of the traditional high-rigidity robots that can't ensure safety of human-robot interaction and the adaptability of complex environment, a variable stiffness flexible actuator is proposed for the robot joint based on the magnetorheological (MR) effect of MR Fluids. In this paper, the principle of flexible joint drive is detailed, and design the structure of the drive and perform mechanical analysis is designed. At the same time, the magnetic field analysis of the actuator is carried out by using the magnetic field simulation software Maxwell. Finally, the actuator is simulated and verified. Comparing the analysis of the results, the actuator has the characteristics of simple structure, easy control and wider active variable stiffness adjustment range, and can absorb the vibration or shock energy, and improve the robot joint output ability.

Abstract:In recent years, rehabilitation robots have been developed and used in rehabilitation training for patients with hemiplegia. In this paper, a rehabilitation training robot with variable damping is designed to train patients with hemiplegia to recover upper limb function. Firstly, a magnetorheological joint damper (MR joint damper) is designed for the rehabilitation training robot, and its structural design and dynamic model are tested theoretically and experimentally. Secondly, the rehabilitation robot is simplified into a spring-damping system, and the rehabilitation training controller for human movement is designed. The rehabilitation robot dynamically adjusts the excitation current according to the feedback speed and human–machine interaction torque, so that the rehabilitation robot always outputs a stable torque. The magnetorheological joint damper acts as a clutch to transmit torque safely and stably to the robot joint. Finally, the upper limb rehabilitation device is tested. The expected torque is set to 20 N, and the average value of the output expected torque during operation is 20.02 N, and the standard deviation is 0.635 N. The output torque has good stability. A fast (0.5 s) response can be achieved in response to a sudden motor speed change, and the average expected output torque is 20.38 N and the standard deviation is 0.645 N, which can still maintain the stability of the output torque.

Abstract:Using special characteristics of magneto-rheological (MR) fluidwith rapid, reversible and dramatic change in its viscosity by an external magnetic field, a novel controllable magneto-rheological fluid squeeze film damper is presented in this paper. After analyzing the effects of the MR fluid, the externally applied magnetic flux density and the radial clearance of the damper on the behavior of a flexible rotor supported on the MR fluid squeeze film damper in the non-rotating state, an experimental study is carried out on the controllability and effectiveness of the MR fluid squeeze film damper on the rotor vibration in the rotating state. The existing problems in the MR fluid squeeze film damper, such as unbalanced magnetic pull force, and MR fluid sediment, which may result in the failure of the MR fluid squeeze film damper application, are also discussed. It is shown that not only can the dynamical characteristics of the MR fluid squeeze film damper be controlled by a simple external magnetic field, but also the applied voltage required to dramatically change the dynamic characteristics of the MR fluid squeeze film damper is much lower. The MR fluid squeeze film damper is a very effective way to control the vibration of a rotor system.

Abstract:This study aims to develop a magnetorheological (MR) damper for semi-active knee prostheses to restore the walking ability of transfemoral amputees. The core dimensions of the MR damper were determined via theoretical magnetic field calculations, and the theoretical relationship between current and joint torque was derived through electromagnetic simulation. Then, a physical prototype of the semi-active prosthetic knee equipped with the MR damper was manufactured. Based on the data obtained from angle sensor, pressure sensor (loadcell), and inertial measurement unit (IMU) on the prosthesis, a matching control algorithm is developed. The joint torque of the MR damper can be adaptively adjusted according to the walking speed of the amputee, allowing the amputee to realize a natural gait. The effectiveness of the control program was verified by the ADAMS and MATLAB co-simulation. The results of the test and simulation show that the MR damper can provide sufficient torque needed for normal human activities.

Abstract:A novel compact rotary magneto-rheological (MR) damper with variable damping and stiffness has been proposed and analyzed. Its variable damping is generated by tuning yield stress of MR fluid in both pre-yield and post-yield regimes. The controllable storage modulus in pre-yield region of MR fluid is used to achieve magnetic field dependent stiffness. To ensure the MR rotary damper output variable stiffness in large angle, a unique structure that contains two driven disks and an active rotary disk is proposed. The effects of current, angle and frequency on the torque-angle loops and torque-frequency loops have been investigated experimentally. Adaptive network based fuzzy inference system with learning ability is adapted to capture the non-linear behaviors of variable damping and stiffness. By comparing with the MR dampers with one driven disk and that with no driven disk, it can be found that the proposed MR rotary damper with two driven disks can provide variable stiffness in larger angle. The results made the concept of proposed damper with variable damping and stiffness become feasible.

Abstract:A novel rotary magnetorheological (MR) damper for a tremor-suppression robot was presented.Base on properties of MR fluid and magnetic core material,a magnetic circuit design method suitable for the damper structure was employed.The magnetic circuit was designed using this method,the mechanical and the electric parameters of the damper were calculated.According to the damper structural characteristics,a 3D model of the damper was built with ANSYS APDL,after completing the magnetic solution,the magnetic and mechanic performance parameters of the damper were obtained.With the results of the magnetic analysis and the constitutive relations,the performance prediction of the damper was realized.Then the test system for the MR damper and its mechanical performance was developed,the mechanical performance of the damper was studied using the test system,the damper's properties:torque vs rev and yield torque vs current were obtained,and these results was analyzed,they showed that the mechanical performance of the MR damper is similar to that expected.

Abstract:To increase the output damping torque of a rotary magnetorheological (MR) damper with limited geometrical space, a novel rotary MR damper based on helical flow is proposed. A new working mode, helical flow mode, is discussed and applied to enlarge the flow path of MR fluids. The helical flow can improve the performance of the rotary damper by enlarging the length of the active region. Based on the idea, a rotary MR damper is designed. The rotary MR damper contains a spiral piston, dual-coil. core, a rotating cylinder and a stator cylinder. Based on the Bingham model, the output damping torque of the damper is analytically derived. The finite element method (FEM) is applied to calculate the magnetic field of the active region. The multi-objective optimal design method is adopted to obtain the optimal geometric parameters. A prototype is fabricated based on the optimal results. To validate the proposed rotary MR damper, two types of experiments including the low rotation speed and the high rotation speed are investigated. The results show that the proposed rotary MR damper has high torque density and compact structure. The helical flow mode can increase the output damping torque with limited space.

Abstract:Magnetic circuit structure is the key point in the design of the magnetorheological fluid (MRF) damper,which directly impacts the performance of the damper.By using the method of parametric simulation,the influence of the key structure parameters on the magnetic induction intensity of the gapmagnetic circuit is analyzed.Aiming at the design objective,the design variables were selected and the simulation model of the magnetic circuit was established.In the structural design of magnetic circuit of the MR damper,finite-element analysis (FEA) was introduced,and the parametric programming language was used to optimize the structural parameters of model.A prototype of MR damper was fabricated to verify the effect of optimization by experiments.Both simulation analyses and experiments show that the magnetic flux density at the gap has been significantly improved to meet the design goals,and the magnetic field distribution is more reasonable,after using the parametric programming language to optimize the magnetic circuit structure of the MR damper.So this is an effective method for the optimization design of magnetic circuit of the MR damper.

Abstract:Recovery machinery usually works to resist force from man's body through damping components.It has been widely applied to medical treatment,people's training and so on.Magnetorheological fluids(MRF) consist of dispersed micron size particles and a carrier fluid.These fluids exhibit fast and large reversible changes in their rheological characteristics when they are subjected to external magnetic fields.By using these rheological properties,magnetorheological damper have many advantages,such as light weight,high sensitivity,quick response,low noise and so on.In this paper,by considering the factors of working disk,the gap,the magnetic field distribution and heat elimination,a kind of rotary MRF damper is designed for recovery machinery.A testing system for measuring the damping torque is also set up.Results show that this kind of MRF damper has large torque and wide controllable range.Its stabilization and heat elimination are also improved.

Abstract:The primary goal of this work is to design a novel magnetorheological damper with selectable performance parameters to improve the environmental adaptability of vibration systems equipped with such a damper and to provide a new idea for the design of magnetorheological dampers. The feasibility of the new idea is verified in both principle and experiment. The conceptual design, working principle analysis, magnetic design and prototype development of the magnetorheological damper are carried out. The damper prototype is tested on the dynamic testing system and the results show that the field-off force, peak force and dynamic range of the damper vary with the working modes, which proves that the performance parameters of the proposed damper are selectable during usage. Compared to conventional magnetorheological dampers, this new type of damper has a greater potential to achieve a large adjustment range. In addition, the damper can automatically switch the working channel in accordance with actual stroke, thus improving the response of the vibration system to unanticipated increasing loads.

Abstract:Lower extremity rehabilitation robots play significantly important role in rehabilitation medicine, which aims to bring back the capabilities of patients’ lower limbs because of illness, injury and disease. However, controllability, energy consumption and control precision of the robot motion remain difficult to solve out. In many cases, electric motors are required to have high output torque to move the entire machine legs along with human legs, while extravagant motor torque may lead to excessive bending, fracture or other secondary damages. And the motors would generate the braking torque to prevent this at the cost of consuming large armature current. Controllable braking torque also counts while patients’ active anti-resistance training. Smart materials have provided inspiration and magneto-rheological (MR) fluids vary in rheological behavior with responding to applied magnetic field. Based on the characteristics, magnetorheological dampers (MR dampers) were developed and have realized variable damping resistance according to different magnetic field. Besides, wire-driven system is another guarantee of safety and controllability due to its flexible structure and compliant control. So, with combination of MR dampers and wire-driven system, the lower extremity rehabilitation robot would perform better, more efficiently and more safely. Actually, such robot can hardly be seen in previous related research or publication. In this paper, three kinds of rehabilitation robots with MR dampers and wire-driven system are introduced. They are standing/walking rehabilitation robot with cylindrical dampers, standing/walking rehabilitation robot with discal dampers and sitting/lying rehabilitation robot with discal dampers. Their advantages and drawbacks are also explained.
DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF SHEAR-TYPE MAGNETORHEOLOGIC GREASE DAMPER ROTOR SYSTEM

Abstract:In order to greatly reduce the effect of sedimentation in magnetorheological fluids (MRF) on dynamic behavior of the MRF based devices, a kind of magnetorheological greases (MRG), whose Theological property can also be significantly changed on the application of an external magnetic field, is presented, and a MRG based shear-type damper operating in shear mode for rotor system of rotational machinery and a flexible rotor system with an over-hung disk are developed. The controllability of the shear-type MRG damper on the dynamic behavior of a rotor system, the effectiveness of the shear-type MRG damper for attenuating the rotor's vibration, the suitability of the MRG damper for active vibration control of rotor systems, and the repeatability of the dynamic characteristics of the shear-type MRG damper rotor system during a longer period of time are experimentally studied in the flexible rotor system. Results show that the dynamic behavior of the shear-type MRG damper rotor system can be controlled on the application of an external magnetic field produced by a low voltage electromagnetic coil, the shear-type MRG damper can greatly suppress the vibration of the rotor system at a properly magnetic field, the dynamic behavior of the shear-type MRG damper rotor system does not change during a longer period of time, and the shear-type MRG damper is suitable for an actuator to actively control the vibration of rotor systems.

Abstract:An MRF(magneto-rheological fluid) based vibration control damper is developed for semi-active vibration control of flexible robot joints.Utilizing the properties of the magneto-rheological fluid that changes state from fluid to solid quickly,continuously and reversibly in magnetic field,a vibration control damper capable of providing a continuously variable damping force is designed.The dynamics model is developed and the performance is analyzed,and then the damper is applied to the anti-chemical mobile robot.The vibration model of shoulder joint of manipulator is developed and vibration attenuation is simulated.The prototype is developed and the vibration control experiment is done in the end.The validity of the method presented is verified by the results.

Abstract:Traditional upper limb rehabilitation robots can only complete rehabilitation training according a predetermined trajectory, and its safety system is unreliable, the movement status of the affected limb cannot be adjusted or trained according to the expected torque of the human body. This study presents a flexible safety system for the rehabilitation of joints based on magnetorheological (MR) fluid. First of all, the MR dampers inverter has the advantages of large torque, fast response, controllable flexibility, and safety assurance. The range of motion tracks can be adjusted through the four-lever hinge mechanism, and the required driving force is provided by the motor actuator, and MR damper provides flexibility and variable damping characteristics for the output torque. The system adopts the force/position impedance safety control method, under the action of the internal position closed-loop controller, the MR upper limb rehabilitation flexible joint drives the affected limb to track to the safe position and carries out simulation to verify the accuracy of the system motion torque and position. The safe rehabilitation effect of the upper limb rehabilitation system under the three working conditions (Step, Incremental and Equation) of the interaction moment of the affected limb has been extensively studied. The simulation and experiment results show that the MR damper can control the upper limb rehabilitation system to achieve the desired effect under the condition of increasing and changing the interactive force of the patient, and the safety design of the upper limb rehabilitation robot based on MR is verified.

Magnetorheological Damper With Variable Displacement Permanent Magnet for Assisting the Transfer of Load in Lower Limb Exoskeleton

Abstract:Magnetorheological (MR) fluid exhibits the ability to modulate its shear state through variations in magnetic field intensity, and is widely used for applications requiring damping. Traditional MR dampers use the current in the coil to adjust the magnetic field strength, but the accumulated heat can cause the magnetic field strength to decay if it works for a long time. In order to deal with this shortcoming, a novel MR damper is proposed in this paper, which is based on a variable displacement permanent magnet to adjust the output resistance torque and applied to an exoskeleton joint for human load transfer assistance. A finite element model is used to determine the size parameters of the magnet and separator, so that the maximum output torque is optimal and the torque is uniformly distributed with the magnet displacement. The MR damper was characterized and calibrated on the experimental bench to make it controllable. The novel design enables the torque mass density of the MR damper to reach 8.83Nmm/g, the torque volume density to reach 48.7N/mm2, and has stability for long-term operation. Based on the torque control method proposed, a preliminary human experiment is conducted. The ground reaction force (GRF) data of the subjects is analyzed here, which represents the effect of load transfer to the exoskeleton. Compared with no exoskeleton, the GRF with exoskeleton is significantly reduced: the peak GRF in early stance phase is reduced by 24.14%, and in late stance phase is reduced by 19.77%. Based on our net load benefit (NLB) and net force benefit (NFB) evaluation indicators, the effectiveness of the proposed MR damper exoskeleton for human weight bearing assistance is established.

Abstract:Magnetorheological (MR) technology has provided effective solutions to many engineering bottleneck problems due to its controllable nature. However, designing a rotary MR damper with a high torque–volume ratio is always challenging, especially for some specific application scenarios with constrained space, such as robot joints. To solve this problem, a rotary damper based on MR bearings was designed and evaluated in this study. In this rotary damper, two MR bearings are utilized to provide controllable damping torques and serve as rotors, which greatly saves space while providing high torque. This feature grants the characteristics of compact design and high torque–volume ratio. Quasistatic testing shows that the damping torque of this rotary damper can reach 2.92 Nm when the applied current is 1.2 A. It achieves a high torque–volume ratio of 190 kN/m2, which is nearly four times higher than that of existing rotary MR dampers. The experimental results show that the proposed MR damper is effective in satisfying the high torque requirement in a limited space.
