Abstract:For fully understanding the hydrological dynamics of an infinite terraced slope, the infiltration process was studied by employing the Green and Ampt infiltration model. The limit equilibrium method and the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion were adopted to derive a stability model for the infinite terraced slope subjected to an intense rainfall. Numerical simulation was performed for verifying its applicability. The results of numerical simulation indicate that a set of stepped wetting fronts are found during infiltration, and the infiltration of terraced slope covered by coarse-textured soils can be approximated as one-dimensional infiltration. The potential sliding surfaces from the numerical method are all parallel to the slope line, and the proposed model and framework can provide an approximate method of estimating how the infiltration affects the stability of an infinite terraced slope.

Abstract:A full-scale field study was conducted to investigate the effects of rainfall infiltration on a natural grassed expansive soil slope in China. A 16 m wide × 28 m long area was selected for instrumentation. The instrumentation included jet-filled tensiometers, moisture probes, a tipping bucket rain gauge, and a vee-notch flow meter. One artificial rainfall event amounting to about 370 mm rain depth in total was applied to the slope. The monitored results suggested that there was about a 3 day delay in the response of surface runoff, pore-water pressure, and water content to the commencement of the simulated rainfall. The depth of influence of the rainfall, depending on the elevation along the slope, ranged from 2.8 to 3.5 m. Positive pore-water pressures were measured within the influence depth, and there existed significant subsurface downslope flow at the end of the simulated rainfall, particularly near the lower part of the slope. A comparison of infiltration rates between the grassed area and a bare area nearby indicated that the presence of grass significantly increased the infiltration rate and reduced surface runoff. The cracks and fissures developed in the unsaturated expansive soil played an important role in the hydrological process.Key words: expansive soil, slope instability, infiltration, vegetation cover, grass, soil suction, water content, unsaturated soil.

Abstract:The paper presents the characteristics of progressive movement and crack development observed in a loose fill slope reinforced by soil nails subjected to water infiltration. The purpose-built test slope was constructed by end-tipping completely decomposed granite on moderately gentle sloping ground with minimal compaction, and two rows of soil nails were installed after completion of the slope. Based on the field monitoring data obtained from a comprehensive instrumentation system, this field test has identified the initiation and development mechanism of deformation, including crack propagation in the test slope. The test results on the temporal and spatial variation of wetting-induced movement, water content distribution, and suction change as well as the formation and propagation of surficial cracks are presented. The causative mechanisms of wetting-induced deformations and their implications on the stability of nailed fill slopes are also presented and discussed.

Abstract:Rainfall infiltration depth and mode can severely influence slope stability. With the sustained rainfall, the influenced region of slope gradually expands. By using the Green-Ampt model to the soil slope, infiltration regulation was discussed under sustained and small intensity rainfall. And the infiltration rate of unsaturated soil was proposed according to the saturated infiltration theory. Because of the changing of initial moisture content in depth of slope, the saturated or unsaturated infiltration rate and depth could also be changeable with the sustained rainfall infiltration. Based on the principle of strength reduction, the calculation model of slope safety factor was established under different initial moisture contents and infiltration modes. Then, the slope stability was quantitatively analyzed through software FLAC3D. The calculation results of soil slope engineering show that there is a shorter period for slope stability under different initial moisture contents and unsaturated infiltration ways at the slope wetting front. The stability period of slope is 33.3% according to different initial moisture contents of wetting front less than that of the same initial moisture content of wetting front. And the slope is easier to fail under the unsaturated infiltration. The results agree well with the actual situation under sustained and small intensity rainfall.

Abstract:The high and steep slopes along a high-speed railway in the mountainous area of Southwest China are mostly composed of loose accumulations of debris with large internal pores and poor stability, which can easily induce adverse geological disasters under rainfall conditions. To ensure the smooth construction of the high-speed railway and the subsequent safe operation, it is necessary to master the stability evolution process of the loose accumulation slope under rainfall. This article simulates rainfall using the finite element analysis software's hydromechanical coupling module. The slope stability under various rainfall situations is calculated and analysed based on the strength reduction method. To validate the simulation results, a field monitoring system is established to study the deformation characteristics of the slope under rainfall. The results show that rainfall duration is the key factor affecting slope stability. Given a constant amount of rainfall, the stability of the slope decreases with increasing duration of rainfall. Moreover, when the amount and duration of rainfall are constant, continuous rainfall has a greater impact on slope stability than intermittent rainfall. The setting of the field retaining structures has a significant role in improving slope stability. The field monitoring data show that the slope is in the initial deformation stage and has good stability, which verifies the rationality of the numerical simulation method. The research results can provide some references for understanding the influence of rainfall on the stability of loose accumulation slopes along high-speed railways and establishing a monitoring system.

Abstract:Rainfall infiltration usually leads to shallow landslides due to the reduction of matric suction within soil. However, experience has shown that not all of those landslides occur in the period of precipitation: Some landslides occur hours or even days after rainfall events. This phenomenon has not been widely investigated and addressed in the literature. This paper establishes a general rainwater redistribution model for fine-over-coarse and coarse-over-fine soil stratification profiles based on the one-dimensional Moore's infiltration model and the continuity of soil-water potential at the interface of the two-layered soil. A comparison of the results of the redistribution model with those of the numerical analyses shows that with the use of properly estimated input parameters, the proposed model is quite reasonable. Along with the validated rainwater redistribution model and the infinite slope model, the factors of safety are calculated for two hypothetical landslide cases. The results reveal that both factors of safety decrease slightly in the redistribution process and eventually reach stable values when the accumulative infiltration increases to a certain value. This finding may explain why shallow landslides occur after the rainfall event. Although simple, the analytical model can serve as a useful tool to assess the stability of shallow landslides that occur after a rainfall event.
Stability analysis of rainfall-induced slope failure: a review

Abstract:Rainfall is one of the most significant triggering factors for slope failures in many regions around the world. Numerous research studies have been conducted to investigate infiltration of rainwater into a slope, and the effect of water infiltration on slope stability. In this paper, a review of existing research on infiltration analysis and slope stability analysis under rainfall infiltration is presented. Studies on infiltration analysis with conceptual models, analytical analysis and numerical modelling are first reviewed. The typical pore water pressure profiles in the slope are then discussed. Subsequently, recent developments in analyses of slope instabilities under rainfall conditions using the limit equilibrium method and coupled hydro-mechanical modelling are summarised, and major findings on critical hydrological factors related to rainfall-induced landslides are summarised and discussed. Finally, several research topics are suggested for further study.

Abstract:The loess slope stability is influenced by rainfall and other factors. In order to find out the mechanism of loess slope instability, especially the influence of rainfall intensity and slope, the indoor model test was performed to study rainfall-induced loess landslide in Tianshui area, Gansu Province. Slope gradient and rainfall intensity are considered as variables, and their influence on slope stability are analyzed based on monitoring of soil suction and water content, and slope deformation process. The results show that the higher the rainfall intensity, the faster the infiltration rate. The volumetric moisture rate under heavy rainfall is more than 10% under small rainfall intensity. The steeper the slope, the lower the infiltration rate for the slope model. The loess slope is prone to overall sliding from bottom to top under the heavy rainfall, and easily lead to down-top retrogressive landslide under light rain.

Abstract:Expansive soil is characterized by fissure development, thus making expansive soil slope unstable under rainfall. In this study, under the background of Yanji expansive soil cutting slope, the seepage field and stability evolution characteristics of fissured expansive soil slope under rainfall were investigated through numerical simulation. The transient water migration of slope at different fissure depths was simulated using the finite element method. In accordance with unsaturated strength coupling theory and with the use of limit equilibrium method, the slope stability was obtained, and the supporting effect of bolt length, angle and reinforcement position on expansive soil slope under rainfall was investigated. As revealed by the results, fissures increased the influence range of rainfall infiltration, and the depth of fissures was found as a vital factor to control the seepage and stability of slope. Moreover, the expansive soil slope landslide induced by rainfall had the characteristics of shallow depth, small range and gradual process. The control method of expansive soil slope landslide based on bolt reinforcement was proposed. The engineering examples and slope stability monitoring results suggested that reasonably using bolt reinforcement technology could effectively inhibit the development of expansive soil slope fissures and reduce the effect of rainfall on the stability of expansive soil slope. The proposed method is capable of providing a theoretical reference for the prevention and control of instability disaster of expansive soil slope.

Abstract:The failure of soil slopes is usually triggered by rainfall infiltration. Under the rainfall infiltrating, soils transform from unsaturated state to saturated state, the matric suction gradually disappears, pore water pressure increases, and the safety factor of soil slopes decreases. In this paper, a novel rigorous limit equilibrium method is proposed to investigate the stability of unsaturated–saturated soil slopes under rainfall infiltration. The force equilibrium conditions along three coordinate axes and the overall moment equilibrium conditions around three coordinate axes are all strictly satisfied, which are more coincident with the real force state of the slopes. In addition, the seepage fields of soil slopes are investigated by using SEEP/W software. Then, the seepage fields are introduced to the rigorous limit equilibrium method. The effects of rainfall intensity, rainfall patterns and rainfall duration on the stability of the unsaturated–saturated soil slopes are investigated using the proposed method. For the unsaturated soils, in which there exists the matric suction, and the matric suction can improve the stability of soil slopes. The safety factors of soil slops under the different rainfall intensity and rainfall patterns are investigated. Moreover, the stability of Fanlingqian slope under rainfall infiltration is analyzed to verify the correctness and precision of the proposed method.

Abstract:Many landslide cases by geological investigation showed that the effect of impermeable strata was important in sliding process.A slope model including an impermeable stratum was constructed to simulate the action of rainfall and groundwater infiltration from slope back edge in order to reveal the influence mechanism of impermeable strata.Simulation results showed that the rainfall-infiltration mainly affected the soil above the impermeable stratum,including the quick increasing of water content,soil deformation,and the rapid enhance of thrust force at slope toe.The soil below the impermeable stratum was not affected.The groundwater infiltrated into the stratum under impermeable layer at back edge only affected the water content and the pore pressure below the impermeable stratum.The effect caused by the groundwater infiltrated not only increased the sliding thrust at the slope toe and the deformation of the slope body below the impermeable stratum,but also greatly increased them above the impermeable stratum.

Abstract:In the stability analysis of loess fill slope, the fissure nature of loess is often ignored, which makes the stability calculation of fill slope too conservative. Based on the upper limit theory of plastic limit analysis, the stability analysis model of loess-filled fissured slope supported by frame prestressed anchors was established. Considering the tensile strength cut-off yield property of soil, the stability coefficient of slope was calculated, and the influence of different factors on slope stability was analyzed. The results show that ignoring the fissures in loess will overestimate the stability of the fill slope, and the support structure can significantly improve the stability of the loess-filled fissure slope. The research results of this paper can further enrich the stability analysis theory of loess-filled fissured slope supported by frame prestressed anchors, which is of great significance to guide engineering practice.

Emulating Analysis of the Effect of Rainfall Essential on Slope Stability

Abstract:Rainfall is one of the main reasons of slope failure.Rainfall intensity and rainfall duration play a major role in the aspect of slope stability.Based on the theory of percolation mechanics and soil mechanics,considering the effect of different rainfall essentials on slope stability with saturated-unsaturated filled subgrade,the paper used the Flac3D analysis software to carry out numerical simulation,and obtained the filled subgrade slope stability factor with different rainfall intensity and rainfall duration condition.Through analyzing the relationship between rainfall essentials and filled subgrade slope stability factor,the security problem of filled subgrade slope was discussed.The result provided the theoretical and theorem basis for effectively guiding the protection work of subgrade slope.

Abstract:Accurate analysis of the stability of rainfall-induced landslides is an important and urgent task. Under complex geological conditions, traditional stability analysis methods cannot meet stability evaluation requirements. To study the impact of the rainfall pattern on the probability of instability of loess slopes, the intensity-frequency-duration curve and breakdown coefficient methods were introduced to analyse the effects of the rainfall extremum distribution and time scale, and bounded random cascade simulation were used to generate random rainfall patterns (RRPs). The obtained RRPs under several classical rainfall patterns were compared in terms of the safety factor, rainfall threshold (I a S /I a F ), and annual failure probability (AFP) of loess slopes. Finally, soil preferential flow and spatial variability combined with the RRPs were introduced to analyse the change in the stability of rainfall-induced loess landslides under different theoretical frameworks. It was revealed that the use of a uniform rainfall pattern produced conservative stability evaluation results. Considering the RRPs, the calculation of I a S /I a F and AFP should include the common characteristics of various rainfall patterns. By comprehensively evaluating slope stability considering soil spatial variability and rainfall pattern variability, this study revealed that neglecting certain factors may result in incorrect slope stability estimates. Incorporating multiple assumptions in failure probability evaluation could provide more comprehensive slope safety assessment.

Abstract:Under the influence of rainfall, the failure mechanism and stability of layered slopes is one of the current hot topics. This paper aims to examine the influence of rainstorm conditions on the stability of layered soil slopes and analyze the inter infiltration rule and water-holding response characteristics through physical model tests and numerical simulation. The results demonstrate that the layered structure and inclination can affect the rainwater infiltration and stability of layered soil slopes under rainstorm conditions. Different inclinations greatly influence the safety factors of the layered soil slopes and the downdip slopes are more susceptible to landslides due to heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, the pore water pressure of the sand layer dissipates 90.95% and 70.45% under the horizontal layer and downdip layer, respectively. In addition, settlement occurs on the surface of the slope at the initial stage of rainfall. As rainwater continuously infiltrates, the slope's surface expands unevenly. The expansion amplitudes of the shoulder and toe of the slope have a more extensive expansion range, which is crucial in landslide prevention and control. The results of the model test are consistent with the numerical simulation analysis. The results provide a theoretical basis for designing a stratified soil slope management plan.

Abstract:The slope stability concerning rainfall and infiltration is analyzed. Specially, two kinds of infiltration (saturated and unsaturated) are introduced, and two slope failure modes (shallow failure and existing slip failure) due to rainfall are considered. The effects of the change of shear strength, density, pore-water pressure and seepage force in soil slices on the slope stability are explained. Based on Mein-Larson infiltration mode and the limited equilibrium method, a convenient and general analytical mode for the analysis of slope stability under rainfall action is set up. A quick response analysis method for landslide prediction is proposed. Finally, a quantitative case study concerning the time and depth of infiltration in relationship to the soil, the slip surfaces in different depth to the slope surface is presented to show the rainfall influence on slope stability.

Abstract:Aimed to analyze the influence of rainfall on slope stability. The finite element method (FEM) is used for the calculation of 2-D transient seepage in the unsaturated slope, while the method of limit equilibrium is used for computing its safety factor. The change of pore water pressure, slip surface and safety factor are investigated through numerical calculations with consideration of various intensity and duration of rainfall. Special attention has been paid to slope stability after rainfall. It is found that sometimes the minimum safety factor may occur several hours or several days after the rainfall, instead of the time during the rainfall or when the rain just stops.
Influence Analysis of Rainfall Infiltration on Stability of Slope and Existing Small Diameter Bias Double Tunnels

Abstract:Rainfall infiltration is one of the main causes of slope instability, and it is of great significance to study the influence of rainfall infiltration on the stability of existing small diameter bias double tunnels and slope. Based on the theory of infiltration, the finite difference FLAC3D software was used to establish the numerical model of the existing small diameter bias double tunnels and slope under rainfall infiltration. The characteristics of stress, velocity, displacement and shear strain increment of tunnel lining and slope under different rainfall intensity conditions are studied, and the stability and safety of existing small diameter bias double tunnels and slope are analyzed. The results show that the slope and tunnel lining are affected by the affected area and the unaffected area of the rainfall, and the vertical stress, velocity and displacement of the slope and tunnel lining are increasing with the increase of rainfall intensity in the case of the same duration of rainfall; The effect of rainfall infiltration on the vertical stress, horizontal velocity and horizontal displacement of slope foot is greater than that of top of slope and slope waist; When the rainfall intensity is 25mm/h to 65mm/h, the horizontal displacement of the slope gradually extends from the middle of the slope to the slope top and the slope foot and the internal slope surface, and the horizontal displacement of the left tunnel is larger than that of the right tunnel; The shear strain increment of the tunnel lining is first aggregated at the left and right shoulders and the right hance of the right tunnel, and gradually increases with the increase of rainfall intensity, and the effect of the shear strain increment on the left and right shoulders of the right tunnel is greater than that of the right hance.
