Abstract:Recently, attention has been paid to the electrochemical investigation of hemoglobin [l]. Scheller’s [2,3] and Kuznetsov’s [4] groups have provided the available polarographic information on hemoglobin at the dropping mercury electrode; only a few papers dealing with the hemoglobin redox behaviour on a solid electrode have been reported [5,6]. The common characteristic of these investigations is that the reduction rate of hemoglobin is much faster than the oxidation one. This paper reports the redox behaviour of hemoglobin at a bilayer modified platinum electrode with brilliant cresyl blue (BCB) and bromopyrogal red (BPR) forming the bilayer, and at a simply adsorbed BCB modified platinum electrode. The sluggish process of irreversible oxidation of hemoglobin is promoted considerably by the BPR modified electrode surface.
