Abstract:During the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) a renaissance of both literary and political history occurred. The stage was transformed from primitive echoes of the morality plays to a vibrant and diverse exploration of human endeavor and man's place in the universe. The titanic literary figure of Shakespeare today veils a group of friends and challengers whose pens strove for the same goal. The depiction of madness was ubiquitous during plays of this time and reflection on the views of this group of men gives us a more reliable insight into mental illness then and today.

Abstract:This paper discusses the depiction of madwomen in a range of early modern English plays including some by Shakespeare in order to show how their madness operates at the intersection of gender, genre, and social class. Its particular focus is on language, and it argues that the speech styles of madwomen are essentially similar whatever their social class. For women, madness is a linguistically liberating condition, bringing together high and low cultural discourses. While stage madwomen’s language has similarities with that of madmen, it is more licentious and transgressive because the violation of social and behavioural norms is more extreme.

Abstract:Feigned madness is a motif that – with varying frequency – returns in literary texts. It is usually a carrier of important metaphors, such as: search for truth, escape from reality or conscious rejection of routine. Moreover, it seems to have an exceptional interpretative potential in dramas as it also symbolises a performative treatment of existence and an awareness of fiction which directs the poetics of the drama towards the meta-theatre. The author of this article considers these issues in relation to the titular characters of two dramatic masterpieces of world literature: Hamlet by William Shakespeare and Henry IV by Luigi Pirandello. Both characters, for various reasons, decide to hide their true psychological condition under the image of a madman, which, interestingly, confirms their sophistication and intellect. Putting on the mask of a madman guarantees the privilege of unpunished violation of conventions and established orders, hated by individuals such as Hamlet or Henry IV. This rebellion and emancipation lead to the final defeat of these characters, who, however, dominate over the others, since, unlike other actors who dispassionately play roles that have been imposed to them, they choose their roles, and – most importantly – they are aware that they are playing.

Abstract:Shakespeare is one of the great creators of human characters of the 16(th) century. Like for many of his contemporaries madness was a central topic of his work. The first part of this paper discusses the sociocultural environment and the semantic field of madness in the Elizabethan age, which forms the background for Shakespeare's characters. In the second part we try to analyze the clinical pictures of the fictive characters of Othello, Hamlet, Lear and Macbeth. While we find melancholy, delusions and hallucinations, other diseases such as schizophrenia are missing entirely. Schizophrenia only appears in the literature more than two hundred years later, in the beginning of modern age.

Abstract:This thesis considers the ways in which the supernatural in early modern drama is connected to sleep paralysis and hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinations. Using modern psychological studies alongside early modern medical treatises, dietaries, and supernatural pamphlets, I consider the impact that sleep paralysis and sleep-related hallucinations have had on early modern drama. Despite lacking modern science with which to explain the phenomena, early modern playwrights were able to draw on contemporary culture in order to represent this innate part of the human condition on the stage. Regardless of the differences between early modern and modern beliefs, this thesis argues that we may recognise sleep paralysis in this drama because playwrights were astute observers of the human condition, allowing them to depict the parasomnias without knowing the science behind them. Chapter One looks at plays from the 1590s: Shakespeare’s Richard III, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Julius Caesar. Chapter Two examines plays by the children’s companies in the indoor playhouses from the early 1600s: Marston’s Antonio’s Revenge and Sophonisba, and Chapman’s Bussy D’Ambois. Chapter Three considers plays by the adult companies after their acquisition of an indoor playhouse: Tourneur’s The Atheist’s Tragedy, and Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, The Tempest, Pericles, Cymbeline, and Henry VIII. Finally, Chapter Four looks at plays written after Shakespeare’s death in 1616: Middleton’s The Witch and his revisions of Macbeth, Rowley, Dekker, and Ford’s The Witch of Edmonton, Sampson’s The Vow Breaker, and Newdigate’s The Twice-Chang’d Friar.

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to explain the relationship between madness and the culture of societies, where madness is closely related to cultures. Madness is defined as a group of behaviors characterized by abnormal mental or behavioral patterns. Culture has a tremendous influence on the individual values framework of a society as it is a set of traditional beliefs, rituals, customs and values transmitted and shared in a particular society. Anyone who deviates from these rules will be considered insane. Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway is a novel that expresses her perceptions of the idea of madness throughout history; especially since the writer herself was diagnosed as mentally ill. In this novel, the writer chooses the character of Septimus and his relationship with the outside world. Septimus was responsible, obedient, and loved by his employer, yet his inner world was separated from the outside one. It was exacerbated by the fact that he was distanced from the daily habits of the masses and became a stranger and unfit for normal life. Trapped between the past and the present, he failed to leap over a painful memory, and he gradually fell into a state of madness.

These were the years in which psychoanalysis dominated psychiatry in the USA, and so Freud's influence in the broader culture forms the central though not the sole focus of the analysis.

Abstract:Historically, women do not appear to be escaping the determination to be insane either by adopting prescribed patterns of femininity or by opposing the attributions. No matter how strong or weak a woman is, in the end, there is always a possibility of the loss of the self that turns them into mad women. This paper examines why and how several female protagonists in Game of Thrones are depicted as insane and hysterical as over time their characters grow stronger. The analogous arrangement of madness and femininity blocks their access to the position of normality in this fictional world. Moreover, female abnormality is a clear form of female normality since, weak or strong, women like Daenerys, Sansa, Arya, or Cersei end up being labeled as insane or hysterical by the patriarchal normativity. In the fictional world of Westeros, madness and gender performative discourses form the framework of behavioral traits that lead its female protagonists towards madness. This paper will use gender theories and Butler’s performative acts to explain the attitudes of the writer as well as the creators of Game of Thrones towards female insanity and the reasons behind the depiction.

Abstract:Madness has been frequently represented in English literature since it was an issue concerning not only medical practitioners and social control but also the role of women in society and the exertion of men’s will over wives, sisters, daughters and other female relatives. In this paper, the condition of nineteenth century women confined to the madhouses or asylums is discussed in relation to the different representations made by two Victorian novelists, Wilkie Collins and Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and a contemporary writer, Sarah Waters. Theories of insanity and the motives of women abuse are widely introduced followed by some reflections on the representation of abuse in three novels: The Women in White, Lady Audley’s Secret and Fingersmith. A substantial difference between the first two novels and the modern one is the portrayal of sexual orientation, masochism and pornography.

Abstract:In 1551 England, Alice Arden cuckolded and then murdered Thomas Arden of Faversham, a prosperous, if unscrupulous, merchant and landlord, in their own home. Alice Arden was tried and convicted of murder, sentenced to die, and burnt at the stake. In the 1570s Holinshed chronicled the crimes and sentencing related to Thomas Arden's murder, and some twenty years later an anonymous playwright dramatized the events in a domestic tragedy called Arden of Faversham. Performed on the Elizabethan, and newly secular English stage in the wake of the Reformation, Arden of Faversham employs what I call the Corpus Christi affect, a phenomenon from the outlawed medieval theatre, to play a trick on its staring and startled audience. My focus is the play's spectacle--a poisoned crucifix, a painting that kills at a glance, a prayer book, shorn of its leaves--spectacle that insistently points at and exploits anxieties that motivate the iconophobes and the iconoclasts. I work with Andrew Sofer's account of semiotic and phenomenological attitudes towards stage properties in my analysis of Arden's props and the characters that handle them. I argue that while Alice's blasphemy, rebellion, and felony appear to be contained and condemned by her death sentence, the play stages its own subversive act by asserting the corpse of her husband as potentially salvific--the very means by which Alice performs her spiritual redemption.

Abstract:The pre-eminent figure in mid-Victorian psychological medicine, Dr. John Conolly had his reputation damaged in the 1850s by scandals linking him to cases of wrongful confinement, including one that figures in Charles Reade’s novel, Hard Cash . This essay looks at two major works Conolly published during the scandals and argues that they are responses to the charges against him. Both works focus on representations of insanity in art, rather than actual patients. “The Physiognomy of Insanity” (1858-59) is a series of essays on photographic portraits of asylum patients, and his essays prove to be more fictional than factual. A Study of Hamlet (1863) looks at the ambiguity of madness in Shakespeare’s portrayal of Hamlet, but it explains how Conolly understood the relationship between fact and fiction in cases of insanity. In both works, Conolly defends himself as an aesthete and defines his diagnostic method as a deliberate and necessary form of impressionism.

Abstract:This paper explores the representation of mad women in literature through the lens of psychoanalytical feminism. It focuses on analyzing the decades-old patterns of female objectification through the male gaze, and their being ruled as ‘mad’ or ‘psychotic’ for demanding equal rights as men. Through the use of psychoanalytic feminism theory, the paper studies the literary works of the late 1800s and early 1900s. And in relation to the birth of the feminist movement; it demonstrates how within the literature of that period, more often than not women were depicted as mentally ill and condemned to mental hospitals and psychotic institutions in order to receive extremely harsh treatments for illnesses that they do not have. The analysis will be performed on two literary works, that have been selected and seen as fitting for the topic, and they are: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, and Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen. With the leading characters of these two novels being female, and extracted from society for being ill-fitting, they become the perfect examples for describing the main points of this paper.

The book sensibly does not argue that Hamlet’s Catholic nostalgia is proof of its author’s recusancy, and Curran’s learned and often subtle readings of nonShakespearean primary texts enrich many of the analyses he provides, especially of the “Strumpet Fortune” (chapter 5) and the ghost. The overall claim that both Hamlet and its central protagonist are devotionally conflicted rings true, but the play does not open its mysteries in response to the book’s application of puzzling, schematic characterizations of Protestantism and Catholicism. This may be partly because the play itself studiously refuses to define exactly what is Protestant and what is Catholic in Elsinore—a refusal that has generated countless subtle, suggestive, although often contradictory readings of confessional identity in Hamlet. Indeed, it may be in that refusal that Hamlet most fully and hauntingly depicts the theological, emotional, and psychological aftermath of the Reformation.

Analysis of literature in this type gives the researchers much pressure to reveal real situations of that period. The main topic of this article is to analyze John Webster’s “ The Duchess of Malfi”.

Abstract:Whereas science refers to the real world existing independently and conditioned by cause and effect, the world of literature is fictitious, created by the artist in our imagination by means of language, an artefact conditioned by aesthetic laws, a world sui generis. Accordingly, Hamlet is no person, but a literary figure, doing, saying, thinking and feeling only what the poet dictated him word for word. The essential difference between the two worlds is often overlooked. That "blind spot" has a long-standing tradition in European intellectual history and goes back i.a. to the German "Hamlet experience" in the eighteenth, the "Hamlet fever" and the felt spiritual kinship (Seelenverwandtschaft) in the nineteenth century. Teleological literary criticism, centering around Hamlet's "character" and isolating his psychologically evaluated monologues (e.g. Bradley), refrained from Hamlet's fictionality and role-play and led to blurring beyond recognition the boundaries between real person and literary figure (e.g. Freud, Jones) and assisted in reducing a dramatic role to a medical case history. Speaking of Hamlet, one has to start from Shakespeare's text, our subject matter. A dramatic play being a plot turned into dialogue, the poet's vocabulary used (but indirectly also the vocabulary not used) is particularly informative. When referring to Hamlet's "antic disposition", Shakespeare uses a wide range of over 20 different terms, the most frequented being mad/madness (44 times). Evidence of primary importance are the five occasions after the apparition of his father's ghost, when Hamlet speaks of hist "madness" as an assumed role. In Act I "madness occurs first as a mere possibility when Hamlet informs his friends, he might "put an antic disposition on"; in Act II vis-a-vis Rosencrantz and Guildenstern ("I am but mad north-north-west") it is his deliberate action under certain conditions; in Act III it occurs thrice, first in his declaration of intent ("They are coming to the play, I must be idle" (i.e. "mad"), next in answering the king ("I fare of the chamaeleon's dish"), and once again in a particularly explicit distinction for his mother ("I am essentially not in madness, but mad in craft"). The evidence of all other instances of mad/madness represented here corroborates these findings: madness as an adopted role and not as a character trait. - It should also be noted that Shakespeare's main source (Belleforests adaptation of the Amleth-story from Saxo Grammaticus) already knew of the motive of stimulated madness as a cover for revenge. Hamlet assumes the role of a "madman" in order to have full scope for action, first, to test by help of the "play in the play" the truth of his father's apparition as a ghost demanding revenge as well as the actual guilt of Claudius and, when that is established, for preparing and executing his revenge. By acting himself, Hamlet becomes guilty and (Shakespeare having chosen the dramatic genre of tragedy) pays for his success with his life. Considering the constant border-crossings between the spheres of real persons and fictive literary figures in psychological approaches to Hamlet, we stressed the essential difference of a literary work of art from real life. At the same time, the inherent limitations of that difference must be shown as well. Although the world of belles lettres is fictive and non-existent in reality, it does not play in a vacuum. It is fed, in many ways, by the poet's experience of his own days as well as by the work's position within the realm of literary tradition (genre, sources, etc.). It is perhaps easy, to insist on the self-contained nature of literature, making literary criticism an arcane activity of a few elected professionals. The price to pay would be, as Laurence Lerner points out, that great literature will no longer tell us anything about life, and the poet's subtle insights, his wisdom, his understanding of the soul and of the world cease to enrich the general read

Abstract:This two-step argument first establishes that the majority of recent American films dealing with mental illness draw on a traditional iconography of madness as it has been established over the centuries in Western culture. In this vocabulary of images, the mad are typically seen as wise fools, as dangerous villains or as gifted geniuses. The author then argues that some of these new films add a fourth category in which the mad are defined as normal and the person with autism as the embodiment of this normalcy. A close examination of the films then suggests that high functioning autism has become the embodiment of America’s current cultural condition.

Abstract:Background: Madness served primarily as a form of amusement for the spectators in operas of the seventeenth century. This representation was far removed from clinical reality. This circumstance changed in the eighteenth century at the time when tragic madness emerged in numerous operas. Material and methods: The opera buffa Arcifanfano-Re dei matti (Arcifanfano-King of fools, premiered in 1749 in Venice, text by Carlo Goldoni 1707-1793 and music by Baldassare Galuppi 1706-1785), which continuously enacts a realm of fools and is meant to appear amusing, is riddled with psychopathological abnormalities for which a retrospective diagnosis is methodologically rejected. However, the opera presents many subjects for working out a typology of fools based on outlasting personality traits of the protagonists. The libretto is investigated. A musical analysis is spared. Results: The conceptualized typology of fools in the opera, which is oriented towards the seven main vices or deadly sins serves, in the tradition of moral satire, to critically hold up a mirror to the audience to reflect their own vices by an amusing characterization of the latter. Historically classified, the treatment of fools by means of isolation, custody, locking up in cages as well as authoritarian measures of submission reflects the custom in those days before humanizing the treatment of people with mental illness in the course of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. Conclusion: The opera Arcifanfano is essentially characterized by continuous madness. A typology of the fools can be worked out from the precise depiction of the personalities. A mirror is held up to the spectators in terms of vices, in the tradition of the contemporary baroque opera. At the same time, the opera can be classified psychiatrically and historically as a seismograph of its time when in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries people with mental illness were isolated and incarcerated.
