Abstract:Universities in Australia have been using the course experience questionnaire (CEQ) for a number of years to measure the quality of teaching. Recently, there have been increasing calls for a broader perspective that takes into account the potential of non-classroom context influences on the student learning experience. This project undertook to develop a broader instrument that added a range of scales that could be linked to the existing instrument. A sample of almost 4000 students responded to the trial instrument. The trials suggest that the existing 'good teaching', 'generic skills', 'clear goals', 'appropriate workload' and 'appropriate assessment' scales can be supplemented by the following additional scales: 'student support', 'learning resources', 'learning community', 'graduate qualities' and 'intellectual motivation'. These new scales were shown through Rasch analyses to be psychometrically reliable and accurate.

Abstract:The development of a strong and vibrant knowledge-based economy is linked in direct ways with successful graduate outcomes. Building evidence-based insights on such outcomes plays an important role in shaping planning and practice. With this broad objective in mind, this article analyses findings from the Graduate Pathways Survey, the first national study in Australia of bachelor degree graduate outcomes five years after course completion. It begins by discussing key rationales and research contexts to position the study internationally and in terms of research on graduate careers, quality assurance and planning. Focus is then turned to highlighting findings from the study, which involved a census of graduates from all Australian universities. It looks at graduates' perceptions of their degree and of its relevance to their work, their pathways into study and work and their salaries and satisfaction with their jobs. The article concludes by discussing the contribution of the findings for understanding graduates' work and development, and for enhancing higher education quality and planning.

Abstract:Abstract Background Confirming the validity of the previously published course experience questionnaire (CEQ), a tool in general use in higher education, will enable its specific use in the evaluation of postgraduate clinical pharmacy programmes. The postgraduate clinical pharmacy programmes of interest may have unique aspects to them which may affect validity of the CEQ, for example, the dual emphasis on learning experience through both a formal class environment and workplace practice activities. Objective To validate the course experience questionnaire (CEQ), a tool used for student evaluation of higher education provision. Method A UK postal survey, using the CEQ, of graduates from clinical pharmacy postgraduate programmes. Cases were subject to exploratory factor analysis and compared with previous, non-pharmacy samples. Setting Graduates from 11 different postgraduate clinical pharmacy programmes in the UK since 1990 were surveyed. A total of 511 questionnaires were distributed and 364 (72 per cent) were returned. Key findings Factor analysis showed that the sample exhibited similar key constructs to other higher education samples. An important finding was a split in the “good teaching” construct in this postgraduate sample. This split reflects the type of teaching delivery common in postgraduate clinical pharmacy programmes. Conclusions The validation of this important evaluation tool for use in higher education means that comparisons can now be made between institutions and programmes, providing evidence for the quality of provision of these programmes from the student's perspective.

This research has sought perceptions of 937 graduate students of different disciplines from 10 universities, using course experience questionnaire comprising of 30 items. It was found that students' responses differ with background variables. This survey has brought forward information on on-campus support available to students, learning resources, quality of courses offered, interaction opportunities to students and growth of interest in respective field of study. Abstract:The University of Rochester's Graduate Experience in Science Education (GESE) course familiarizes biomedical science graduate students interested in pursuing academic career tracks with a fundamental understanding of some of the theory, principles, and concepts of science education. This one-semester elective course provides graduate students with practical teaching and communication skills to help them better relate science content to, and increase their confidence in, their own teaching abilities. The 2-h weekly sessions include an introduction to cognitive hierarchies, learning styles, and multiple intelligences; modeling and coaching some practical aspects of science education pedagogy; lesson-planning skills; an introduction to instructional methods such as case studies and problem-based learning; and use of computer-based instructional technologies. It is hoped that the early development of knowledge and skills about teaching and learning will encourage graduate students to continue their growth as educators throughout their careers. This article summarizes the GESE course and presents evidence on the effectiveness of this course in providing graduate students with information about teaching and learning that they will use throughout their careers.

Abstract:Interest in developing and deploying E-commerce systems has grown greatly over the past few years, leading to a major shortage of qualified developers. This paper describes the development of a graduate course in E-commerce education that has been implemented as part of an Honours degree programme and a first year Masters offering for a traditional Information Systems programme. The aim of this course is to give graduate students a broad grounding and holistic set of skills to enable them to begin successful E-commerce systems development. This paper provides a background and context for this course, an overview and discussion of the course content, delivery methods and practical focus, and discusses experience in running and evolving the course over the past two years. We hope that our experiences and approaches will be useful for others who are planning similar courses focusing on E-commerce systems engineering.

Abstract:In order to enhance the understanding of important concepts and strengthen the awareness of software process, we designed a special project-practicing course in Nanjing University as an attempt to solve typical issues in these courses (e.g., focusing on aspects of software process, participation, limited time in a regular semester, etc.). The course is composed of 6-hour lecture and 32-hour bidding game. Preliminary results indicated several advantages with this new education approach on process-specific practicing course, which we already reported on CSEE&T2013. Since this course has been delivered to students from school (less experiences) and industry (more experiences), we noticed students' different performances on this course. In this paper, we collected course results from six classes, based on a comprehensive analysis from 8 different aspects; we try to understand where “EXPERIENCE” impacts students' difference performance and benefit from the understanding to improve our education on software engineering.

Abstract:Student evaluations of teaching and learning are playing an increasingly important role in the delivery of high-quality, student-centred education. Insights into student perceptions of their learning experience provide important information that can be used to inform course design and development. The majority of course evaluations take the form of quantitative surveys, but research suggests that a reliance on survey data alone can be problematic from a teaching and learning perspective. Qualitative course evaluations have been cited as a viable alternative to quantitative evaluations, but less research has been conducted into their efficacy when compared to quantitative evaluations. The study on which this article reports attempted to contribute to addressing this shortcoming by describing and assessing a novel approach to eliciting qualitative feedback from students in a research methodology course at a higher education institution in South Africa. Conventional content analysis was used to analyse the qualitative feedback received from students. The qualitative course evaluation approach was then appraised in terms of the degree to which it has the potential to overcome the shortcomings associated with quantitative course evaluations and the extent to which the information gathered could be used to improve the design and delivery of the academic programme.

Impact of a Graduate Entry Programme on a medical school library service

Abstract:The aim of this study was to compare the use of library facilities by first year undergraduate medical students and Graduate Entry Programme students (GEP). More specifically it tried to determine which library services (if any) were more frequently used by GEP so that this could be taken into account in future Information Services planning. A questionnaire on the use of Library and Information Services was posted to all first year GEP students and undergraduates on the 5-year course. In addition, user statistics of library entry and borrowing were collated from gate readings and the library Unicorn management system. Overall, GEP students were found to make a greater daily/weekly use of library facilities than undergraduates on the 5-year course. The facilities most used by both sets of students were essential texts, e-mail, PCs and study facilities. Computer Aided Learning packages, journals and video facilities were least used. However, on a daily/weekly basis GEP students made 74% more use of journals (P < 0.01), 59% more use of e-journals (P < 0.05), 36% more use photocopiers (P < 0.05), 42% more use of printers (P < 0.05), 56% more use of the library catalogue (P < 0.05) and 50% more use of databases (P < 0.05). This difference in use should be taken into account by LIS providers as there is expected to be an increase in fast-track graduate courses offered by medical schools throughout the UK.

Abstract:This paper reports on an evaluation of student learning during a post‐graduate environmental teacher education course. Questionnaires and journals were used to document student conceptions of environmental concern and environmental education; assess qualitative and quantitative changes in these conceptions and student environmental attitudes and behaviour; and elicit students' views of the effectiveness of different teaching methodologies in facilitating personal learning and attitude/behaviour changes. The results indicate that the course helped develop greater coherence in student conceptions of environmental concern, effected a shift in student conceptions of the nature of environmental education and facilitated the development of personal environmental attitudes and behaviour. Suggestions regarding improvements in teaching/learning approaches and techniques are made in the light of student responses.

Abstract:Information Development, Ahead of Print. This study assessed an information literacy skills course that has been running over two decades at the University of Cape Coast. The study established the usefulness of the course using data from questionnaires administered to 278 final year students mandated to conduct research projects at the end of their four-year programme. The results showed that irrespective of students' competence in IL, they are sometimes confronted with information behaviour challenges in accessing relevant information for academic work. Based on this revelation, it is recommended that advanced hands-on training be introduced to enhance students' skills in using search strategies to ensure low recall and high relevancy in the information retrieval process.

Assessing resident experience of a new experiential learning health advocacy curriculum: a mixed methods study

Abstract:Background: Health Advocacy is considered one of the most difficult skills to teach. Many medical learners feel ill-equipped in social competencies and identify it as a significant gap in their medical training. Experiential learning has recently been emerging as a more effective method to teach health advocacy. The Post Graduate Medical Education (PGME) Health Advocacy Day is a new experiential learning curriculum designed to teach important competencies of health advocacy and social accountability to post-graduate medical residents at the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Canada. The objective of this mixed-methods study was to assess resident experiences. Methods: Second-year trainees from all adult residency programs attended the Advocacy Day as part of a mandatory academic day. All participants completed a mandatory pre-and post-session quiz to assess knowledge of key topics before and after the course. We also distributed a voluntary survey to all participants and invited residents to participate in semi-structured interviews to provide feedback on the course. We used descriptive statistics to analyze quiz scores and survey results and conducted a paired t-test of pre and post-test quiz scores. We also performed a thematic analysis of qualitative feedback, specifically survey comments and semi-structured interviews. Results: One hundred and eighty-three residents participated in the Advocacy Day and 112 (61.2%) completed the post-course survey. Ten residents volunteered to be interviewed. Respondents were generally satisfied by the session and felt it was of good quality. Most residents felt the course enhanced their ability to advocate for individual patients or communities (N = 80; 71.5%) and understand patients and families' lived experience with illness (N = 87; 77.5%). Most residents also felt the course improved their knowledge of the impact of social determinants of health (N = 91; 81.2%) and increased their awareness of local resources that can support patients and their families (N = 88; 78.3%). Visiting community sites in-person and meeting persons with lived experiences were highlighted as the most valuable components of the course. Conclusion: Experiential learning can be integrated within post-graduate medical curricula to teach health advocacy competencies. Future studies should examine the longitudinal impact of the curricula, to determine whether shifts in perspectives persist over time.
From student to working professional: A graduate survey

Abstract:This paper reports on the results of a 2023 survey that explores the Work Integrated Learning (WiL) experiences of thirty recent Computer Science (CS) graduates. The graduates had all completed their undergraduate bachelors degree within the last five years and were currently employed in a CS industry role. The survey asked about the graduates' perceptions within a continuum of WiL experiences from final year capstone projects to professional development in their first industry-based role. Most respondents had taken a capstone course involving a team project. Only two respondents had participated in an internship program. Our results indicate that graduates value their capstone experiences and believe that they provide transferable skills including teamwork, managing client relations, exposure to technologies and methods, and time management. When entering their first industry role less than fifty percent of graduates were allocated a mentor. Overwhelmingly, these graduates noted the importance of those mentors in their transition from student to working professional. Very few of the surveyed graduates were provided with ongoing professional development opportunities. Those who did noted significant gains including growth of leadership skills and accelerated career progression. Our survey highlights a gap and an opportunity for tertiary institutions to work with industry to provide graduate onboarding and novice/early-career professional development opportunities.

Abstract:Graduate nurses experience role conflict and stress as they begin practice in work environments of high complexity, nurse shortages, and expectations to become competent rapidly. The authors report outcomes from a study that evaluated qualitative responses to the Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey administered to graduate nurse residents in the University HealthSystem Consortium/American Association of Colleges of Nursing postbaccalaureate nurse residency program at 12 academic hospital sites. Qualitative analysis provided sufficient evidence to convert specific open-ended questions on the Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey instrument to a quantitative format for ease of administration and analysis.

Abstract:In recent years, the market has seen the emergence of numerous affordable sensors, interaction devices, and displays, which have greatly facilitated the adoption of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) across various applications. However, developing these applications requires a solid understanding of the field and specific technical skills, which are often lacking in current Computer Science and Engineering education programs. This work details an extended version from a Eurographics 2024 Education Paper, reporting a post-graduate-level course that has been taught for the past ten years to almost 200 students, across several Master's programs. The course introduces students to the fundamental principles, methods, and tools of VR/AR. Its primary objective is to equip students with the knowledge necessary to understand, create, implement, and evaluate applications using these technologies. The paper provides insights into the course structure, key topics covered, assessment methods, as well as the devices and infrastructure utilized. It also includes an overview of various practical projects completed over the years. Among other reflections, we discuss the challenges of teaching this course, particularly due to the rapid evolution of the field, which necessitates constant updates to the curriculum. Finally, future perspectives for the course are outlined.

The influence of postgraduate qualifications on educational identity formation of healthcare professionals

Abstract:Demand for postgraduate qualifications in medical education can be judged by the increase in providers worldwide over the last two decades. However, research into the impact of such courses on identity formation of healthcare professionals is limited. This study investigates the influence of such programmes on graduates' educational identities, practices and career progression. Informed by constructivist grounded theory (CGT), semi-structured interviews were conducted with 27 graduates (2008-2012) from one postgraduate programme, who were at different stages in their careers worldwide. The audio data were transcribed and analysed using a CGT approach. Participants enrolled in award-bearing medical education courses for various intrinsic and extrinsic reasons. The findings from this study highlight their development as educators, and educational researchers, leaders and learners, as their self-efficacy in educational practices and engagement in scholarly activities increased. Graduates attributed career progression to the qualification, with many being promoted into senior positions. They also described substantial performance attainments in the workplace. The findings contribute to understanding the complexity and nuances of educational identity formation of healthcare professionals. A qualification in medical education encouraged transformational changes and epistemological development as an educator. Awareness of these findings will inform both those considering enrolment and those supporting them of potential benefits of these programmes.

Abstract:Enhancing graduate employability is a priority for many stakeholders in higher education and this research explores graduates’ experiences of, and attitudes towards, the inclusion of employability-related support in undergraduate degree programmes. A literature review is supplemented by primary research on a targeted sample of 104 graduates from humanities, sciences, engineering and social sciences, who span several generations and have over 2250 years of employment experience. The findings are triangulated to a workshop with 23 graduate careers advisory professionals. The results signal some important trends in experiences and attitudes, as well as variations by discipline and gender. While one in 10 graduates prefer a disciplinary focus with just indirect attention to employability, nine in 10 want employability to have greater emphasis, albeit those preferences vary between optional and integrated approaches. Experiences of employability-related support signal a significant shift over recent decades in how that support is provided, with professional service groups such as careers taking a much more active role and the overall level of provision rising. A cautionary note however is that the link with the discipline remains critical and the right balance needs to be struck between the provision of such support and embedding it into the curriculum.

After advancing the rational for this analysis, the paper sketches the overall research approach. The paper continues with an analysis of education and employment outcomes for the target groups, and concludes by summarising implications for building further research insights.

Abstract:Background: Evaluations of continuing professional development programs typically focus on short-term knowledge and skill acquisition. There is a need for more comprehensive program evaluation methods that assess a broader range of impacts and can elicit how and why these outcomes occurred. We conducted a qualitative study to investigate the impacts of a multidisciplinary, online health professional postgraduate degree and to gain insights into the factors that led to these impacts. Methods: Participants were graduates of the University of Melbourne's Master of Cancer Sciences who could participate in an online interview. Semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted exploring a broad range of impacts, including changes in professional practice and career trajectory since graduation, and how the degree influenced these impacts. Data were analysed inductively. Results: Fifteen participants (female: 80%, 31-50 years old: 67%) from a range of professions were interviewed. A number of major themes were uncovered. Impacts on career trajectory included expanded career horizons (e.g. increased role diversity and complexity), and increased confidence in their professional identity. Impacts on professional practice included individual improvements in patient care and research, as well as changes in organisational practice. Factors identified as leading to these impacts were: (i) active, interactive and interprofessional learning; (ii) networking, informal mentoring, and role-modelling; and (iii) support at multiple levels. Conclusion: This study provides preliminary evidence of the positive impact of a Master of Cancer Sciences on graduate career trajectory and professional practice. In addition, the inductive methodology enabled identification of the curricular features (both planned and emergent) that influenced these impacts, facilitating potential transferability of learnings to other teaching programs.
