Abstract:Given the traditional emphasis on academic achievement in a Confucius-heritage society, schooling has been one of the key elements of new Chinese learners in Hong Kong in their construction of self-identity. This article addresses the identity issues of two young Mainland Chinese immigrant students and one cross-boundary student (CBS), a resident of Shenzhen who is attending a Hong Kong school on a daily basis. They are in their first, second or third year of schooling in Hong Kong. By using a narrative approach, the educational experiences and family backgrounds of the three students are highlighted and analysed. All three students reveal a keen sense of aspiration and are actively involved in the appraisal of their own personal identity. Positive educational experiences and parental support are two predominant factors that affect their general perceptions of their new schooling and self-identity in Hong Kong. Whether they identify themselves as Hong Kong people or Mainlanders, is subject to their parents' views, their own expectations and personal understanding of the meaning of citizenship.

Abstract:Over the past ten years, fast-track social work qualifying training routes have been introduced and rapidly expanded in England. These programmes justify their existence through rhetoric that implies their students are superior to other students, and therefore require special privilege—the 'best and brightest'. When evaluating fast-tracks, the approach taken largely ignores their broader public impact, including how they impact on the majority of social work students who continue to qualify through mainstream university social work education. This exploratory study seeks to gain an understanding of the impact that these changes have had on mainstream social work students, and in particularly how these students see themselves in relation to fast-track students. Based on the principles of democratic evaluation, brief and anonymous questionnaires were sent to all postgraduate social work students at two universities in England. The findings suggest that while mainstream students do not generally perceive themselves as being inferior future practitioners, they do recognise the financial and symbolic inequity they are subjected to, in particular as a result of their qualifying courses receiving significantly less financial support. Findings related to participants' reasoning for not applying to fast-tracks, and how views differ based on demographics, are also explored.

Abstract:Identity construction - the process of creating and building a new future self - is an integral part of a person's professional career development. However, at present we have little understanding of the psychological mechanisms that underpin this process. Likewise, we have little understanding of the barriers that obstruct it, and which thus may contribute to inequality in career outcomes. Using a social identity lens, and particularly the Social Identity Model of Identity Change (SIMIC), we explore the process of academic identity construction among doctoral students. Through thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with 22 Ph.D. candidates, we observe that the identity construction process relies on a person's perception of a navigable pathway between their current self and their future self. Importantly, participants who were able to access multiple identity resources were more likely to perceive a navigable pathway to a future professional self (e.g., as an academic), unless they perceived these identities to be incompatible with those held by leading members of the profession (e.g., their supervisors). This research suggests that the identities that people are able to access as they progress in their careers may play an important role in their ongoing professional identity construction and career success.

Abstract:Black and minority ethnic (BME) students are less likely to achieve a first or upper-class second degree than White students. This evaluation investigated the experiences of BME Health and Social Care students at a London university of the hidden curriculum, thematically analysed through a critical race lens. Four overarching themes were identified, (1) super-visible ethnicity, (2) the negative depiction of BME lived experiences, (3) self-depreciation and self-confidence and (4) separation. Recommendations at an institution-level are made in the areas of staff diversity, language support, student registration experiences and canteen costs. Recommendations at a course-level are made in the areas of co-creation of the curriculum, student belonging, academic and literacy skill development. The recommendations are underpinned by a critical pedagogy, including culturally sensitive teaching strategies and the development of meaningful staff-student partnerships. The recommendations made may be applicable to other Higher Education Institutions with a diverse student cohort where the attainment gap is prevalent.

Abstract:British Journal of Visual Impairment, Ahead of Print. Transition to higher education is a considerable period of change for students, and can be a particularly challenging time for students with a visual impairment. The aim of this study was to understand the transition experiences of an undergraduate student in Sport Rehabilitation with a visual impairment. A narrative inquiry was conducted with one participant purposively sampled due to being certified severely sight impaired. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview, and analysed by creating narrative threads within Clandinin and Connelly's three-dimensional framework. The social influence of role models, peers, and staff were noted in relation to their impact on confidence and feeling of fitting in. Navigating the campus, teaching spaces, and demonstrations were all highlighted as spatial factors that affected independence and participation during transition. Time-related aspects such a personal development, proactivity, and pre-, during, and post-teaching session experiences were identified as key considerations. The narratives uncovered should serve as a tool to trigger reflection on previous teaching practice, and inform future direction. The findings and recommendations within this study will benefit transition and inclusivity for students with a visual impairment, particularly on Sport Rehabilitation or other healthcare programmes, allowing them to study and practice effectively.
“Cutting Edge” or “Ridiculously Isolated”?: Charting the Identities, Experiences and Perspectives of Full-Time, Non-Tenure Track Faculty Engaged in Service-Learning

Abstract:This article discusses a phenomenological study that investigated the complexity of identities and experiences of 11 full-time, non-tenure-track faculty in five different career tracks engaged in service-learning at a large public research university in the southeastern United States. The study employed interviews and focus groups from which key themes and findings emerged. Non-tenure-track faculty participants reported: feelings of uniqueness/isolation based on their roles but also enhanced flexibility to incorporate service-learning from intrinsic motivations; difficulty carrying out scholarship on service-learning, despite an interest in doing so; lack of recognition compared to tenure-track colleagues; the acquisition of expertise around the pedagogy; and finding particular value in the support and professional development offered by the institution’s service-learning office. The authors discuss the findings in the context of prior research on non-tenure-track faculty roles and settings, service-learning faculty involvement and motivation, and implications for institutional policy.

Abstract:Abstract This article reports on a qualitative study which explored online student engagement experiences in a higher education institution. There are very few studies providing in-depth perspectives on the engagement experiences of online students. The project adopted a case study approach, following 24 online students over one academic year. The setting for the study was an undergraduate online Humanities programme at Dublin City University. The research question for the study was: What themes are central to online student engagement experiences? Data was collected from participant-generated learning portfolios and semi-structured interviews and analysed following a data-led thematic approach. The five central themes that make up the study’s findings highlight key issues of students’ sense of community, their support networks, balancing study with life, confidence, and their learning approaches. The findings of this study indicate that successful online student engagement was influenced by a number of psychosocial factors such as peer community, an engaging online teacher, and confidence and by structural factors such as lifeload and course design. One limitation of the study is that it is a relatively small, qualitative study, its findings provide insights into how online degrees can support online students to achieve successful and engaging learning experiences.

Abstract:Higher Education (HE) is seen as a tool to create job opportunities and enhance individuals' quality of life. Research demonstrates that students' expectations of career success in HE are an important predictor of their motivation and academic attainment. However, there is a lack of clarity about how career success is defined and whether individuals perceive that their experiences (e.g., gender) may be associated with these definitions. In online written interviews with 36 university students in the United Kingdom, we examine how students define career success and how they perceive their identity (gender, socioeconomic status) experiences underpinning these definitions. We analysed three main definitional themes: (a) career success as personal development, (b) career success as individual mobility, and (c) lack of clarity about what career success is. Findings suggest that gender and socioeconomic experiences had an important role in students' understanding of career success, especially for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Indeed, in the intersection of gender and socioeconomic status, inequalities persist: female students anticipated difficulties in terms of work-life balance and gender stereotypes that constrained their career success definitions. Moreover, family experiences were important to understand students' definitions of career success, particularly for disadvantaged socioeconomic groups. The current research sheds light on an important paradox in HE organisations: while students tend to define career success in relatively individualistic ways, such as individual mobility, financial success, or personal development, it was clear that their social identities (e.g., gender, socioeconomic status) and related experiences played an important role in creating definitions of career success. This further implies that when universities encourage a perception of career success as individual mobility, for example, having better job opportunities, or by espousing the belief that higher education and/or professional sectors are truly meritocratic-this will not always align with, and may create tension for, students from disadvantaged groups.

Abstract:Not all students admitted to higher education have the same chances of success, with differential outcomes reported for students from a variety of widening participation backgrounds. This paper reports on a study of such students in a science foundation programme in the north of England. Analysing their stated motivations and aspirations for study reveals complex familial and social factors which enable and constrain their ability to engage with their studies. These notably include the duties and obligations towards their extended families that exist as a kinship tax and which threaten their ability to sustain sufficient time, energy and headspace to meet the demands of their studies. This presents challenges in teaching these students, whose priorities may not lie unambiguously with their studies, given their familial and social contexts.

Abstract:The formation of emerging doctoral scholarly identities has received significant attention in recent Education research, some of which is situated within the spatial turn that seeks to understand the impact of space and place upon identity and pedagogy. In this research project, involving analysis of PhD thesis acknowledgements written in 1980, we began with focusing on how these texts illustrated the social, epistemological and spatial aspects of doctoral scholarly identity formation. However, our encounters with these evocative data challenged us to enlarge our thinking about the relationship between a scholarly identity, place and things, and offered possibilities to apply the concepts of the 'placeful university' and 'ecological ontology' to our analysis. These concepts offer an alternative way of thinking about mind and matter in doctoral education that takes us beyond Cartesian dualism, undermining and decentring the traditional <i>and</i> neoliberal university's construct of the heroic individual researcher.
Visibilising the invisible: three narrative accounts evoking unassessed graduate attributes in dance education

Abstract:Dance holds a unique place in academia. The creative, embodied, collaborative activities typical to dance learning offer fresh insight to cross-disciplinary literature on the graduate attributes – both visible and 'invisible' – all graduates from a given institution are expected to hold. This article presents findings from the research project Making the Invisible Visible. We engage narrative methodology to present a series of amalgam characters reflecting specific ways in which 'invisible' graduate attributes are embedded in pedagogies, student-teacher relationships and student understandings of their professional skills. Firstly, we aim to create narratives that evoke the complexity of 'invisible' graduate attributes in tertiary dance education. Secondly, we respond to the question; How might specific 'invisible' attributes be made explicit and embedded in tertiary dance pedagogy? We present a framework to articulate how 'invisible' attributes can be made explicit and embedded in tertiary Dance Pedagogy. This framework may be utilized beyond the field of dance to generic tertiary fields of study.

Understanding Education and Understanding Yourself as a Refugee Learner Seeking Access to Higher Education in Malaysia: Insights from a Pilot Study

Abstract:This article presents findings from a PhD pilot study exploring access to higher education for students in a protracted refugee situation in Malaysia. The study seeks to understand access from the students’ perspective through a consideration of the ways in which they understand education and how, in turn, they construct understandings about themselves. The study uses a socio-cultural approach of learner identity to explore the personal meanings students develop, focussing specifically on concepts of internal and external recognition and their interaction. Three students with refugee backgrounds currently enrolled on higher education programmes were interviewed and data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The analysis involved a model of co-production in which participants were consulted regarding the interpretation of the results prior to publication and had the opportunity to contribute to the meanings that emerge. The results show that education is central to students regaining a sense of self after having their learning trajectories abruptly severed upon seeking asylum. Considering processes of internal and external recognition reveals how a new socio-cultural context influences the understandings students develop about themselves in relation to education. This is manifest through their changing subject choice at the tertiary level and a renewed appreciation for the value of education. It also provides a means to understand how concealing their refugee status influences their relationships with other students on campus. These patterns of interaction are shaped through a dual layer of being perceived-to-be-perceived as they interpret others’ actions to suggest they are being recognised as refugee students despite not having revealed their status.

Abstract:This paper investigates the phenomenological experiences of academic acculturation of selected non-British post-doctoral academics with a retrospective focus on their experiences as PhD students. The participants came from different disciplines and countries of origin to pursue several years of postgraduate research in different British higher education institutions. The typical, yet distinct, experiences of an exceptional group of early career academics offer invaluable insight into the joys, excitement, puzzlement and challenges that international students often encounter as they embark on studying and living in a foreign country such as the UK. Using Urie Bronfenbrenner's bio-ecological theory of human development, our paper presents a theoretical perspective that can help elucidate and offer a greater understanding of what appear to be complex incidences in international students’ experiences. These incidences can, arguably, be crucial to the success or failure of students’ sojourns.

Abstract:Research about the experiences of underrepresented groups in higher education (HE) demonstrates the persistence of challenges, despite policies and institutional strategies to promote inclusion. Diversity and inclusion policies have been part of the HE agenda for several decades, yet most policies and interventions focus on (a) a given, isolated identity experience (e.g., based solely on gender, social class, or ethnicity) rather than more intersectional approaches to identity; and (b) top-down interventions that do not include participants insights in their design. In this paper, we report a case study of a workshop with students at an elite university that drew on an intersectional approach to social identities (IASI), specifically, looking at gender and social class. We explore three key themes: (a) the importance of group processes, (b) the use of visual techniques, and (c) the institutional tensions and the (de)politicisation of social psychology research. Reflecting on this case study we argue that approaches to identity and inclusion in HE can benefit from intersectionality beyond the use of multi and overlapping identity and social group categories. We argue that research in this space is not neutral and needs to acknowledge researchers’ position about (a) inclusion and diversity, (b) perceptions of participants in research, and (c) the motivation and aims of institutions where the research is conducted. Finally, we discuss the theoretical and practical implications of integrating an intersectional approach within social identity research in HE when focusing on underrepresented groups.

Abstract:Emerging Adulthood, Ahead of Print. International mobility experiences such as student exchange can promote identity development and cultural awareness. However, little research has assessed such processes using a master narrative framework. This study explored undergraduate student perspectives on how changing cultural contexts and the associated cultural master narratives influence identity development during university exchange experiences. Twenty interviews were conducted with Australian and U.S. exchange students aged 21-22 years. Thematic analysis identified a process model of master narrative awareness and associated responses incorporating three key elements: contexts of awareness, identity responses, and experiences of self-transformation. A fourth theme highlighted the influence of individual identities as interaction effects in these processes. The findings show that exposure to diverse master narratives during student exchange enhances students' awareness of their own and other master narratives, which supports identity development. The study provides new insights into the ways intercultural experiences shape master narrative awareness and identity in emerging adults.

Abstract:This qualitative study explored the university experiences of 13 students from Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller (GRT) communities in England and Scotland. Using conceptual tools, informed by the work of Bourdieu, such as racialised habitus and racialised cultural capital, as well as Elias's work on established-outsider figurations we show that GRT students are 'racialised' outsiders in university established white habitus, with students experiencing the devaluing of their cultural capital including anti-Gypsy and anti-Roma rhetoric within university settings. Moreover, a destabilised habitus was evident, for some, who experienced 'cultural dissonance' between community and university expectations as well as feelings of 'not being good enough'. This was compounded by the racialised controlling images they encountered, resulting in hyper-vigilance about the sharing of their ethnic identity. For some, this led to painfully 'fragmented selves' which was exacerbated by a lack of support from universities and invisibility within institutional established white habitus.

Abstract:We present data from an exploratory qualitative interview-based pedagogical research project on the development of student agency in higher education. Our aim was to respond to Nick Zepke's claim that what is often missing from the current neoliberal discourse of higher education 'is students having a voice in what and how they learn and how they can action their voice in the wider community as agentic citizens.' Informed by Lacanian discourse analysis, our project investigated the opportunities and threats facing some of our undergraduate students as they struggled to exercise agency and develop autonomy in the marketised university. Repeat interviews (n = 15) with final year students focussed on the psychosocial categories of power, affect, intersubjectivity and desire. The analysis was guided by Lacan's theory of the four discourses, an account of the vicissitudes of agency. We found that students can move between discourses depending on the extent to which their agency (operationalised here as Lacan's 'object cause of desire,' the objet petit a) was enabled or thwarted. Our critique of the metaphor of the 'student journey' addresses the implications for learning and teaching and the university's mission to develop its students in light of perceived commercial pressures.
Identity statuses in upper-division physics students

Abstract:We use the theories of identity statuses and communities of practice to describe three different case studies of students finding their paths through undergraduate physics and developing a physics subject-specific identity. Each case study demonstrates a unique path that reinforces the link between the theories of communities of practice and identity statuses. The case studies also illustrate how students progress and regress in their commitment to their subject-specific identities and their professional identities. The progression/regression is dependent on their willingness to explore different aspects of a physics professional identity and their availability to carry out such exploration. Identity status and future identity crises can manifest in students' behavior in the classroom. Allowing students to engage in more legitimate practices of the physics community, especially in the form of undergraduate research, helps students to explore their opportunities and inform the level of commitment they wish to make to physics.

Abstract:This paper analyzes academic identities and academic agency in the context of knowledge management and production that permeate the contemporary university. A practical argumentation on the meaning of teaching activity seeks to propose, in contrast to traditional approaches, that identity and meaning are constitutive dimensions of present activity. Furthermore, as analyzed, the present action of the teacher, students, and things produces meaning and identity. I argue that, even while immersed in the functional environment of the university, teacher identities are not entirely bound to determination. Instead, it is contended that teaching events often provoke moments of 'professional desubjectivation' resulting from the teacher's response to present situations that demand a different attitude and disposition. The result of this argument presents, through teaching activities, the possibility of enacting educational gestures, such as those shown during study activities.

Exploring Faculty Identity Sharing: A Pathway to Empathy in Physics Faculty

Abstract:This study investigates how faculty acquire contextual information about students, examining mechanisms and motivations used when sharing their identity to facilitate empathy. Empathy is "the ability and tendency to share and understand others' internal state" (Zaki and Ochsner, 2012), and is a critical factor in both motivating faculty to enact large scale change and take immediate, smaller actions. This study explores the impact identity sharing has on obtaining contextual information that motivates empathetic action. Nineteen semi structured interviews with physics faculty explored participant identities and interactions across various contexts. Employing emergent thematic coding, we crafted four personas around faculty sharing, teaching values, and student reciprocity. Brooke, the Trust Builder, prioritizes creating an environment of trust by openly discussing their identity, aiming to foster student openness. Nour, the Identity Navigator, shares personal experiences to assist others in navigating their own identities, acknowledging the challenges of college years. Brooke and Nour had more students approaching them with personal issues, indicating a correlation between faculty identity sharing and student openness. Casey, the Cautious Sharer, expresses concerns about potential alienation or backlash, approaching personal sharing with caution. Wray, adopting a Walled Off approach, separates personal and professional life due to past negative experiences or a belief in the importance of that division. Among the faculty interviewed, 15 who were explicitly open about their identities reported that students approached them with personal issues. This study outlines mechanisms influencing when and what faculty share about themselves in different contexts. Our findings underscore the significance of fostering dialogue as the initial step in empathy development.
