Abstract:Atmospheric ice nucleating particles (INPs) trigger the heterogeneous ice nucleation, which significantly affects the microphysics and radiative properties of ice clouds. For better understanding of the aerosol-cloud interactions and their associated climatic effects, it is crucial to elucidate the abundance, sources, and ice nucleation mechanisms of INPs in the atmosphere. This review compiles the recent progress made in the INP detection techniques, ice nucleation activities and mechanisms of representative aerosol particles, and the developed ice nucleation parameterizations based on the field and lab investigations. The critical challenges and open questions in the atmospheric INP research field are pointed out. Finally, we highlight the urgent needs to promote the ice nucleation studies in China.

Abstract:Abstract Ice particle formation in tropospheric clouds significantly changes cloud radiative and microphysical properties. Ice nucleation in the troposphere via homogeneous freezing occurs at temperatures lower than −38°C and relative humidity with respect to ice above 140%. In the absence of these conditions, ice formation can proceed via heterogeneous nucleation aided by aerosol particles known as ice nucleating particles (INPs). In this chapter, new developments in identifying the heterogeneous freezing mechanisms, atmospheric relevance, uncertainties, and unknowns about INPs are described. The change in conventional wisdom regarding the requirements of INPs as new studies discover physical and chemical properties of these particles is explained. INP sources and known reasons for their ice nucleating properties are presented. The need for more studies to systematically identify particle properties that facilitate ice nucleation is highlighted. The atmospheric relevance of long-range transport, aerosol aging, and coating studies (in the laboratory) of INPs are also presented. Possible mechanisms for processes that change the ice nucleating potential of INPs and the corresponding challenges in understanding and applying these in models are discussed. How primary ice nucleation affects total ice crystal number concentrations in clouds and the discrepancy between INP concentrations and ice crystal number concentrations are presented. Finally, limitations of parameterizing INPs and of models in representing known and unknown processes related to heterogeneous ice nucleation processes are discussed.
Overview of Biological Ice Nucleating Particles in the Atmosphere

Abstract:Biological particles in the Earth's atmosphere are a distinctive category of ice nucleating particles (INPs) due to their capability of facilitating ice crystal formation in clouds at relatively warm temperatures. Field observations and model simulations have shown that biological INPs affect cloud and precipitation formation and regulate regional or even global climate, although there are considerable uncertainties in modeling and large gaps between observed and model simulated contribution of biological particles to atmospheric INPs. This paper overviews the latest researches about biological INPs in the atmosphere. Firstly, we describe the primary ice nucleation mechanisms, and measurements and model simulations of atmospheric biological INPs. Secondly, we summarize the ice nucleating properties of biological INPs from diverse sources such as soils or dust, vegetation (e.g., leaves and pollen grains), sea spray, and fresh waters, and controlling factors of biological INPs in the atmosphere. Then we review the abundance and distribution of atmospheric biological INPs in diverse ecosystems. Finally, we discuss the open questions in further studies on atmospheric biological INPs, including the requirements for developing novel detection techniques and simulation models, as well as the comprehensive investigation of characteristics and influencing factors of atmospheric biological INPs.

Abstract:Atmospheric ice‐nucleating particles (INPs) play a critical role in cloud freezing processes, with important implications for precipitation formation and cloud radiative properties, and thus for weather and climate. Additionally, INP emissions respond to changes in the Earth System and climate, for example, desertification, agricultural practices, and fires, and therefore may introduce climate feedbacks that are still poorly understood. As knowledge of the nature and origins of INPs has advanced, regional and global weather, climate, and Earth system models have increasingly begun to link cloud ice processes to model‐simulated aerosol abundance and types. While these recent advances are exciting, coupling cloud processes to simulated aerosol also makes cloud physics simulations increasingly susceptible to uncertainties in simulation of INPs, which are still poorly constrained by observations. Advancing the predictability of INP abundance with reasonable spatiotemporal resolution will require an increased focus on research that bridges the measurement and modeling communities. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge and identifies critical knowledge gaps from both observational and modeling perspectives. In particular, we emphasize needs in two key areas: (a) observational closure between aerosol and INP quantities and (b) skillful simulation of INPs within existing weather and climate models. We discuss the state of knowledge on various INP particle types and briefly discuss the challenges faced in understanding the cloud impacts of INPs with present‐day models. Finally, we identify priority research directions for both observations and models to improve understanding of INPs and their interactions with the Earth System.
An Evaluation of Ice Nuclei Characteristics from the Long-Term Measurement Data over North China

Abstract:An attempt was made to delineate the characteristics of ice nuclei (IN) over North China using the ground-based measurement data from 1963–2003. The results show that: (1) the IN concentrations increased during the period from 1963–1996, but decreased after 2000; (2) the average IN concentrations range from 1.0 to 26.3, 3.6 to 78.9, 19.2 to 627.3, and 92.9 to 5285.0 L −1 at temperature −15, −20, −25, and −30°C, with the overall average of 7.8, 20.6, 167.7, and 890.6 L −1 , respectively; and (3) the number concentration of active IN increased nearly exponentially with decreasing temperature, with the slope (ranging from 0.11 to 0.42°C −1 ) being of a narrow range in a log-linear coordinate; the regression equations for the western central China and the eastern central China can be expressed as N ( T ) = 0.0396 exp (−0.317 ΔT ) and N ( T ) = 0.1496 exp (−0.299 ΔT ), respectively. The present study may be useful toward applications in models for predicting IN effects on the cloud, precipitation and climate over North China.

Abstract:New particle formation (NPF) in the atmosphere i.e. nucleation of gas phase precursors and continuing condensational growth is a crucial secondary transformation process. The freshly nucleated particles can grow into sizes where they can act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and further influence cloud and climate-relevant properties. Hence, the detailed knowledge on the formation mechanisms of new particles and their subsequent growth will help us to improve our understanding on the regional air pollution and global climate change. Recent-developed measurement techniques enable to explore atmospheric nucleation by measuring particles/clusters down to 1 nm. NPF events have been observed in a variety of atmospheric environments. Several methods including field observation, laboratory simulations and model calculations are implemented to investigate the nucleation mechanisms and growth properties. Good agreement between particle formation rates and gaseous sulfuric acid concentrations is observed, indicating that sulfuric acid is a key compnent in the atmospheric nucleation process. In addition, the low-volatile organic vapors are found to be involved in new particle formation. However, the huge variations of the particle formation and growth rates in diverse atmospheric environments suggest that a consistent picture on formation mechanisms of new particles does not achieve. Long-term continuous measurements of NPF events have been first performed in the urban atmosphere of Beijing since 2004. Up to now, NPF events have been observed in many different environments, including coastal area, high-elevation mountain, rural site as well as urban region in China. The current nucleation mechanisms are developed based on the observation in clean environment. Hence, whether it could well explain the NPF events occurred in the polluted atmosphere with strong oxidation capacity is a key issue to be addressed in further studies. This paper reviews the measurement techniques for investigating atmospheric new particle formation and growth, summarizes the observation results in various typical environments, introduces the current understanding of the nucleation mechanisms and discusses the main scientific questions that need further researches.
Long-term deposition and condensation ice-nucleating particle measurements from four stations across the globe

Abstract:Abstract. Ice particle activation and evolution have important atmospheric implications for cloud formation, initiation of precipitation and radiative interactions. The initial formation of atmospheric ice by heterogeneous ice nucleation requires the presence of a nucleating seed, an ice-nucleating particle (INP), to facilitate its first emergence. Unfortunately, only a few long-term measurements of INPs exist, and as a result, knowledge about geographic and seasonal variations of INP concentrations is sparse. Here we present data from nearly 2 years of INP measurements from four stations in different regions of the world: the Amazon (Brazil), the Caribbean (Martinique), central Europe (Germany) and the Arctic (Svalbard). The sites feature diverse geographical climates and ecosystems that are associated with dissimilar transport patterns, aerosol characteristics and levels of anthropogenic impact (ranging from near pristine to mostly rural). Interestingly, observed INP concentrations, which represent measurements in the deposition and condensation freezing modes, do not differ greatly from site to site but usually fall well within the same order of magnitude. Moreover, short-term variability overwhelms all long-term trends and/or seasonality in the INP concentration at all locations. An analysis of the frequency distributions of INP concentrations suggests that INPs tend to be well mixed and reflective of large-scale air mass movements. No universal physical or chemical parameter could be identified to be a causal link driving INP climatology, highlighting the complex nature of the ice nucleation process. Amazonian INP concentrations were mostly unaffected by the biomass burning season, even though aerosol concentrations increase by a factor of 10 from the wet to dry season. Caribbean INPs were positively correlated to parameters related to transported mineral dust, which is known to increase during the Northern Hemisphere summer. A wind sector analysis revealed the absence of an anthropogenic impact on average INP concentrations at the site in central Europe. Likewise, no Arctic haze influence was observed on INPs at the Arctic site, where low concentrations were generally measured. We consider the collected data to be a unique resource for the community that illustrates some of the challenges and knowledge gaps of the field in general, while specifically highlighting the need for more long-term observations of INPs worldwide.

Ice‐Nucleating Particle Concentrations and Sources in Rainwater Over the Third Pole, Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:The ice‐nucleating particles (INPs) modulate the microphysics and radiative properties of clouds. However, less is known concerning their abundance and sources in the most pristine and climatic sensitive regions, such as the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Here, to our best knowledge, we conduct the first investigation on INPs in rainwater collected in the TP region under mixed‐phase cloud conditions. The value of INP concentrations varies from 0.002 to 0.675 L −1 air over the temperature range from −7.1 to −27.5°C. This is within the INP spectra derived from precipitation under worldwide geophysical conditions and is also comparable with INP concentrations in the Arctic regions. The heat‐sensitive INPs account for 57% ± 30% of the observed INPs at −20°C and become increasingly important at higher temperatures, indicating biological particles as major contributors to INPs at temperatures above −20°C over the TP, especially on the day with additional input of biogenic materials carried by dust particles. Chemical analysis demonstrates that the rainwater components are mixture of dust particles, marine aerosol, and anthropogenic pollutants. Combined with the backward trajectory analysis, we show that dust particles transported from the surrounding deserts and originated from ground surface of TP may contribute to the heat‐resistant INPs at temperatures below −20°C.

Abstract:Airborne pollen impacts cloud formation and thus affects radiative forcing and climate. Therefore, there is a growing interest in its ice nucleation activity (INA). In this paper, the latest research progresses in pollen ice nucleating particles (INPs) in the atmosphere are overviewed. Newly developed droplet-freezing assays utilizing sampled particles for subsequent offline processing or post-processing, and different cloud chambers for direct processing of aerosol particles have been widely employed in laboratory experiments to study the INA of pollen. Recent studies focusing on the INA of pollen are gradually shifting from pollen grains to pollen derived macromolecules or nanoscale particles. There are differences in the median freezing temperature (T50) among different types of pollen, which is generally in the range of −10 − −25 °C and slightly lower than those of bacteria and fungal spores. Polysaccharides and/or proteinaceous molecules located in/on the pollen provide a distinct survival advantage by controlling the formation and growth of ice crystals. Atmospheric processing (e.g., oxidants, acidity) during long-range transport, meteorological factors (e.g., high humidity, precipitation), and anthropogenic forcing can alter the pollen INA by affecting the abundance and properties of pollen grains and/or subpollen particles in the atmosphere. The spatial and temporal distribution, as well as the ice nucleation mechanisms and processes of pollen INPs in the atmosphere, require further investigations by applying field observation, advanced measurement techniques, and model simulation in future studies.

Aircraft observations of ice nucleating particles over the Northern China Plain: Two cases studies

Abstract:While the concentration of ice nucleating particles (INPs) in the cloud layer is more relevant to the cloud processes, most previous measurements of INPs were conducted on the ground. Given the lack of knowledge of vertical distribution characteristics of ice nucleating particles (INPs) over China, airborne measurements focused on the INP vertical profiles were conducted over Northern China Plain on December 27, 2018 and May 12, 2019. The INPs data, sampled from 0.5 to 5.5 km above ground, were analyzed using a static vacuum water vapor diffusion chamber. The observed INP concentration ranges from 0.13 to 10.53 L−1 at nucleation temperature from −17 to −26 °C and generally decreases with height. In addition, the large aerosols (>0.5 μm) sampled at higher altitudes have a better ice nucleation capacity based on the vertical distribution of activated fractions. The INPs sampled in the low humidity area show a strong correlation (R2 > 0.7) with aerosol particles larger than 0.5 μm in diameter, indicating that the number concentration of large aerosols (>0.5 μm) is an important parameter in INP concentration parameterization at high altitudes.

Characteristics of Ice Nucleating Particles in the Marine Atmosphere from the South China Sea to the Eastern Indian Ocean

Abstract:Marine aerosols can act as ice nucleating particles (INPs) and thus influence cloud microphysical properties, water cycle, and global climate. The low concentrations and high variability of INPs in the marine atmosphere lead to difficulties in their measurement and characterization and lack of observational data. In particular, there is a large gap on atmospheric INPs over tropical oceans, especially the Indian Ocean, which may cause large uncertainties in the simulation of atmospheric INPs, resulting in radiation flux errors and thus affecting the climate sensitivity in models. In order to characterize atmospheric INPs over tropical oceans, airborne total suspended particles (TSP) and rainwater samples were collected during a cruise from the South China Sea to the eastern Indian Ocean during April to June 2021. Using the ice nucleation detection device (TJU-INA) combined with multiple treatments, the levels of total INPs and INP compositions including organic, nanoscale (<0.22 mm), biological and bacterial INPs in TSP and rainwater samples were measured, and the sources and influencing factors of INPS were investigated. Organic INPs dominated INPs (71.7%), and nanoscale INPs also accounted for a large fraction (57.6%) of INPs in marine aerosols during the cruise, with slightly higher proportions in marine areas closer to continents. The concentrations of total, nanoscale and organic INPs were higher in the South China Sea closer to the continent, straits, and the eastern Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka, while the concentrations were lower in the open areas of the eastern Indian Ocean. Carbonaceous components emitted from the continents strongly affected the levels of total and nanoscale INPs. Biological INPs were generally higher near the coast and lower in the open ocean. However, high wind speeds in the eastern Indian Ocean south of the equator likely produced more sea spray aerosols, resulting in higher concentrations of biological INPs than in other open ocean areas. Scavenging of airborne particles by wet deposition likely led to reduction in airborne INPs. After conversion, the spatial distribution of the levels of INPs in rainwater were comparable to that of INPs in marine aerosols. Organic INPs were also dominant in rainwater, which were likely affected by marine biological activities. However, the proportion of nanoscale INPs in rainwater was only half that in aerosols, while INPs larger than 0.2 μm were more abundant in rainwater, maybe because rainfall removed larger particles more easily. Additionally, Cyanobacteria were probably important contributors to ice nucleation activity in rainwater.
Anthropogenic Dust as a Significant Source of Ice‐Nucleating Particles in the Urban Environment

Abstract:Anthropogenic dust is an important constituent of airborne particles in the urban environment but its ice nucleation activity remains poorly investigated. Here, we studied the sources and ice nucleating properties of size‐resolved particles in the urban atmosphere under mixed‐phase cloud conditions. The heat‐resistant ice nucleating particles (INPs) unexpectedly contributed ∼70% of the supermicron INPs at temperatures below −15°C. A detailed chemical composition analysis of size‐resolved particles revealed that these INPs were associated with anthropogenic dust, such as traffic‐influenced road dust. A parameterization based on supermicron particles was developed to predict the anthropogenic dust INP concentration, given their correlations on concentration and similarity in chemical compositions. Once integrated into global models, this parameterization holds the potential to assess the contribution of anthropogenic dust to INPs on a global scale. Given the considerable presence of anthropogenic dust in the atmosphere and its significant role as INPs, we suggest it may be an important aerosol source influencing cloud microphysics and warrant further investigations.

The Science of The Total Environment

Abstract:New particle formation (NPF) studies have been conducted in China since 2004. Formation of new atmospheric aerosol particles has been observed to take place in diverse environments, even under the circumstances of high pre-existing particle loading, challenging the traditional and present understanding of the physicochemical nucleation mechanisms, which have been proposed based on the investigations in clean environments and under laboratory experimental conditions. This paper summarizes the present status and gaps in understanding NPF in China and discusses the main directions opening for future research.
The Observation of Ice-Nucleating Particles Active at Temperatures Above–15°c and Its Implication on Ice Formation in Clouds

Abstract:A series of measurements of ice-nucleating particles (INPs) were performed at two sites in Beijing. At the Beijing Meteorological Service (BMS) site, which was an urban site, no INPs were found to be active above–15°C. However, at the Yanjiaping (YJP) site, which was a rural site, the concentration of INPs active at temperatures above–15°C was found to be as high as 1.73 g –1 . Two parameterizations were constructed by respectively fitting the data obtained at BMS site and YJP site. The two parameterizations, as well as another parameterization from the literature, were implemented into a parcel model to investigate the effect of INPs active above–15°C on phase partitioning in mixed-phase clouds. At a vertical velocity of 0.01 m s –1 , which is typical for stratiform clouds associated with frontal systems, the INPs active above–15°C nucleate ice crystals at low levels. The growth of these ice crystals remarkably reduces both the maximum liquid water mixing ratio and the altitude where the maximum liquid water mixing ratio is reached. When the vertical velocity of the parcel is increased to 0.1 m s –1 or an even higher value, the evolution of liquid water mixing ratio is not controlled by the INPs active above–15°C but those active below–15°C.
Size-resolved Atmospheric Ice-Nucleating Particles During East Asian Dust Events

Abstract:Asian dust is an important source of atmospheric ice-nucleating particles (INPs). However, the freezing activity of airborne Asian dust, especially its sensitivity to particle size, is poorly understood. In this study we report the first INP measurement of size-resolved airborne mineral dust collected during East Asian dust events. The measured total INP concentrations in the immersion mode ranged from 10−2 to 102 L−1 in dust events at temperatures between −25 and −5 ∘C. The average contributions of heat-sensitive INPs at three temperatures, −10, −15, and −20 ∘C, were 81±12 %, 70±15 %, and 38±21 %, respectively, suggesting that proteinaceous biological materials have a substantial effect on the ice nucleation properties of Asian airborne mineral dust at high temperatures. The dust particles which originated from China's northwest deserts are more efficient INPs compared to those from northern regions. In general, there was no significant difference in the ice nucleation properties between East Asian dust particles and other regions in the world. An explicit size dependence of both INP concentration and surface ice-active-site density was observed. The nucleation efficiency of dust particles increased with increasing particle size, while the INP concentration first increased rapidly and then leveled, due to the significant decrease in the number concentration of larger particles. A new set of parameterizations for INP activity based on size-resolved nucleation properties of Asian mineral dust particles were developed over an extended temperature range (−35 to −6 ∘C). These size-dependent parameterizations require only particle size distribution as input and can be easily applied in models.
The Vertical Distribution of Ice-Nucleating Particles over the North China Plain: A Case of Cold Front Passage

Abstract:Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) are crucial for cloud freezing processes in the atmosphere. Given the limited knowledge about the vertical distribution of INPs and its relation to aerosols in China, we present two aircraft observations of INPs over the North China Plain on 23 October 2019 and 25 October 2019, before and after a cold front passage. We used a well-established method to identify the INPs on a silicon wafer and then performed single-particle chemical composition analysis using an environmental scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer (ESEM-EDS). The INP concentrations range from 0.1 to 9.2 L−1 within activation temperatures from −20 to −29 °C. INPs are mostly concentrated within the boundary layer, and their concentration shows a decreasing trend with height (0.5~6 km) before the cold front passage. However, the highest INP concentration always appears at higher altitudes (4~5 km) after the cold front passage. The cold front passage also significantly weakens the correlations between the concentrations of INPs and aerosol particles at different sizes. The activated fraction (AF) of total aerosols increases from 10−6 to 10−4 with height from near ground to 6 km, reflecting a better nucleating capacity of the aerosols at higher altitudes. There is no obvious variation in AF after the cold front passage. Chemical analysis reveals that the INPs containing mineral dust components comprise the majority of total INPs during both flights. The proportion of pure mineral dust declines from 52.2% to 43.5% after the cold front passage while the proportion of mixed mineral dust increases from 23.9% to 45.7%, suggesting that an increased probability of aging or coating of INPs is introduced by the cold front during their long-distance transport. In addition, 88% of INPs have a diameter larger than 1 μm. This indicates that larger aerosols (>1 μm) are the major contributors to INPs at high altitudes despite their relatively low abundance. Our results demonstrate a significant impact of transport events on the sources and vertical distribution of INPs in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Ice-nucleating particles (INPs) are of great importance for regional weather and climate by altering the microphysical properties of clouds. However, large uncertainties still exist for INP concentrations over the polluted North China Plain (NCP) due to limited INPs observation in this region and the complex physical and chemical properties of aerosols from multiple sources. In this study, the concentrations of INPs active in the immersion freezing mode at temperatures ranging from −5 °C to −30 °C are simultaneously measured for about one month in the Spring season at a mountain site and a suburb site in Beijing representing clean and anthropogenic condition, respectively. Different concentrations and characteristics of INPs are found between the two sites, which reflect the influence of different air masses and INP sources. Consistent with previous studies in this region, dust particles are found to be the most efficient INPs during the Spring season, and the contribution of anthropogenic pollution aerosols was not obvious. Most interestingly, the INP concentration at the mountain site was about one magnitude higher than at the suburban site at temperatures warmer than −10 °C, which is caused by primary biological aerosol originating from the forest in the mountainous area. Our results underline the important role of these biological aerosols, which are also expected to have a strong impact on the glaciation of orographic clouds.

Abstract:Ice nucleating particles (INPs) play a crucial role in initiating ice crystal formation in clouds, influencing the dynamics and optical properties of clouds and their impacts on precipitation and the climate system. Despite their importance, there is limited knowledge about the vertical distribution of INPs. This study focuses on aircraft measurements conducted during spring 2018 above the boreal forest of Hyytiälä, Finland. Similarities between INP concentrations, activated fractions, particle concentrations, and size distributions observed at ground level and in the boundary layer aloft indicate that surface particles and INPs are efficiently transported and mixed within the boundary layer. INP concentrations observed in the boundary layer are best predicted by a parameterization describing near-surface INP concentrations driven by the abundance of biogenic aerosol in the Finnish boreal forest, suggesting that biogenic INPs are dominant in the boundary layer above the same environment. Most of the INP concentrations and activated fractions observed in the free troposphere are notably lower than in the boundary layer, and the distinct particle size distributions suggest that different aerosol populations, likely resulting from long-range transport, are present in the free troposphere. However, we show one case where higher INP concentrations are observed in the free troposphere and where a homogeneous particle population exists from the surface to the free troposphere. This indicates that surface particles and INPs from the boreal forest can occasionally reach the free troposphere, which is particularly important as the INPs in the free troposphere can further travel horizontally and/or vertically and impact cloud formation.
