Abstract:Abstract. The ISPRS Technical Commission I Midterm Symposium on "Intelligent Sensing and Remote Sensing Application" was held in Changsha, China, during May 13–17, 2024, aiming to provide a platform to share the latest researches, advanced technologies and application experience, to discuss the future development and to seek international cooperation in various forms. The Symposium has received 229 full paper and abstract s, among them 45 double-blind peer-reviewed full papers were published in ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information, and 165 papers accepted through abstract review were published in the International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences. These papers are mostly dedicated to topics of the 8 TC I Working Groups, 3 Inter-commission Working Groups, including Satellite Missions and Constellations for Remote Sensing, Mobile Mapping Technology, Multispectral, Hyperspectral and Thermal Sensors, LiDAR, Laser Altimetry and Sensor Integration, Microwave and InSAR Technology for Earth Observation, Orientation, Calibration and Validation of Sensors, Data Quality and Benchmark of Sensors, Multi-sensor Modelling and Cross-modality Fusion, Robotics for Mapping and Machine Intelligence, Autonomous Sensing Systems and their Applications, Digital Construction: Reality Capture, Automated Inspection and Integration to BIM, Point Cloud Generation and Processing, Artificial Intelligence Technology Related to Sensor Systems, Multi-sensor Remote Sensing Applications.. These papers presented the latest trends of sensor systems. Analysis of Shanghai Urban Expansion Based on Multi-temporal Remote Sensing Images

Abstract:Being different from the traditional analysis of urban expansion in Shanghai from the perspective of humanities or urban geography, this study applies the Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) spatial information technologies to analyze the spatio-temporal characteristics and evolution of urban land expansion in Shanghai's urbanization process. It provides a basis for further research on the mechanism of urbanization process. In this study, we processed and analyzed the multi-temporal remote sensing images (Landsat series) in Shanghai from 1995 to 2016. A multidimensional feature space was constructed. Then the image classification was carried out by the support vector machine (SVM). On the basis of classification results, the central city zone was extracted by method of regional connectivity. After analyzing the change of area, center of gravity, location and spatial distribution of the central city zone, the spatial layout and trend of urban expansion are obtained. Finally, the driving force of urban expansion in Shanghai is analyzed. The analysis results accurately reflect the process of Shanghai's urban expansion.

Abstract:Urban residential environment surveillance plays an important role in modern intelligent city. Satellite images have been applied in various fields, and the analysis and processing of satellite images has become an important means to obtain the information perceived by satellites. This paper focuses on city residential environment surveillance based on massive-scale visual information retrieval. Since the shortcomings of low contrast, blurred boundary, large amount of information and susceptibility to noise, the performance of satellite image segmentation is not satisfactory, which will affect residential environment surveillance. We design an improved rough set fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm combined with ant colony algorithm. More specifically, satellite images are classified based on the gradient of pixels according to the indistinguishable relation of the image combined with rough set theory. Then, the traditional fuzzy set-based fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm is applied to the satellite image segmentation technology. Subsequently, the improved algorithm-quantum ant colony algorithm and rough set fuzzy clustering C-means algorithm are combined to achieve accurate segmentation of satellite images. Afterwards, we propose a satellite image retrieval algorithm, which can assist city residential environment surveillance. Comprehensive experiment show that our proposed method is effective and robust in residential environment surveillance.
Design and Implementation of a High Spatial Resolution Remote Sensing Image Intelligent Interpretation System

Abstract:Very high spatial resolution remote sensing images have applications in many fields. However, research on the intelligent interpretation of such images is insufficient partly because of their the complexity and large size. In this study, a high spatial resolution remote sensing image intelligent interpretation system (HSR-RSIIIs) was designed with image segmentation, a geographical information system, and a data-mining algorithm. Some key methods such as image segmentation, feature extraction, feature selection, and classification algorithm for interpreting high spatial resolution remote sensing image have been studied. A land cover classification experiment was performed in the Zhuzhou area using a Quickbird multi-spectral image. The classification results were consistent with the visual interpretation results. In additional, the proposed interpretation method was compared with the traditional pixel-based method. The results indicate that the method proposed in the literature is more effective and intelligent than that used previously.

Abstract:Urban remote sensing is a significant field of remote sensing applications.Under the processing of new-type urbanization in China,remote sensing will not only play an irreplaceable role in many areas such as urban eco-logical construction,land and space development,resource and environment carrying capacity monitoring,but also provide data source for urban planning management.Based on the researches of urban remote sensing,this paper mainly analyzes the development of several important directions of urban remote sensing.Moreover,a framework of urban remote sensing based on geographical perspective is constructed.Combined with typical examples,aspects in-cluding structure and pattern,elements and interactions,change and processes,functions and responses are further explored to demonstrate the development of urban remote sensing research.Finally,combined with the national de-mands and technological development,the future development of urban remote sensing is prospected from aspects of data sources,research objects,application topics,research objectives and technical methods.

Abstract:As urbanization and economic globalization gather pace, cities are facing a spate of problems in pursuit of sustainable development despite their rapid progress. Against the backdrop of China’s initiatives to develop smart cities, introducing remote sensing big data technology into refined urban management can enable coordinated, accurate and timely exchange of information among different units in cities, thereby improving the level of intelligence in urban management and develop a urban management mode that is efficient, precise, continuous and all-covering. This study explored the framework of the big data platform for refined management of cities, analyzed the processing and application of remote sensing big data technology was in refined urban management that involved dynamic monitoring of data on the bare soil, built-up land and water bodies, thus providing a technical basis for construction of smart cities.

Abstract:The rapid processing, analysis, and mining of remote sensing big data using intelligent interpretation technology on remote sensing cloud computing platforms (RS-CCPs) have emerged as a new trend. However, existing RS-CCPs primarily focus on optimizing data storage and intelligent computing for common visual representation, overlooking key characteristics of remote sensing data such as large image size, large-scale change, multiple data channels, and geographic knowledge embedding. This oversight hinders computational efficiency and accuracy in remote sensing image interpretation. To address this, we have developed the LuoJia-AI platform, comprising the LuoJiaSET standard large-scale sample database and the dedicated deep learning framework, LuoJiaNET. This platform achieves state-of-the-art performance on five crucial remote sensing interpretation tasks: scene classification, object detection, land-use classification, change detection, and multi-view 3D reconstruction. LuoJia-AI bridges the gap between the sample database and the deep learning framework, exhibiting significant potential for high-precision remote sensing mapping applications.

Abstract:With the ongoing development of Earth observation techniques, huge amounts of remote sensing images with a high spectral-spatial-temporal resolution are now available, and have been successfully applied in a variety of fields. In the process, they bring about great challenges, such as high-dimensional datasets (the high spatial resolution and hyperspectral features), complex data structures (nonlinear and overlapping distributions), and the nonlinear optimization problem (high computational complexity). Computational intelligence techniques, which are inspired by biological systems, can provide possible solutions to the above-mentioned problems. In this paper, we provide an overview of the application of computational intelligence technologies in optical remote sensing image processing, including: 1) feature representation and selection; 2) classification and clustering; and 3) change detection. Subsequently, the core potentials of computational intelligence for optical remote sensing image processing are delineated and discussed.

Applications of Multi-source Remote Sensing Information to Urban Environment Monitoring in Mining Industrial Cities

Abstract:Remote Sensing (RS) has been viewed as the one of the most effective tools for environment monitoring, urban resources and environment investigation, change detection and urban growth analysis in mining industrial cities. Firstly, the framework and structure of applying multi-source RS information to environment monitoring of mining industrial cities is proposed based on the general methodologies of RS applications and the characteristics of mining industrial cities. RS can be used to monitor land use/cover change, extract subsidence land because of underground mining, analyze the dynamic change and simulate the trends of mining industrial city growth, monitor the extension of mining contamination, analyze the impacts of mining to farmland and ground buildings, assess the feasibility and performance of land reclamation and ecological reconstruction, and so on. Land subsidence is a very serious environmental damage caused by mining, and that leads to more negative impacts to ecological system, even leads to geological disaster. Three methods to extract subsidence land from RS image: thematic information based on decision tree, object-oriented subsidence land extraction and target identification based on RS information, geographical data and domain knowledge are experimented. Multi-source and multi-temporal RS information fusion is used for environmental analysis in mining areas. By the fusion of Landsat TM and SAR image, both high spatial resolution and multi-spectral information can be integrated so high classification and target extraction accuracy can be got. IHS fusion algorithm is improved by considering the image content and adaptive IHS fusion is experimented. Multi-temporal RS information fusion is used for change detecting and dynamic monitoring. By the case study in Xuzhou city, it proves that remote sensing can play important roles in environmental analysis and assessment in mining industrial cities and serve as the efficient decision-making support tool f- or regional sustainable development.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a growing role in remote sensing (RS). Applications of AI, particularly machine learning algorithms, range from initial image processing to high-level data understanding and knowledge discovery. AI techniques have emerged as a powerful strategy for analyzing RS data and led to remarkable breakthroughs in all RS fields. Given this period of breathtaking evolution, this work aims to provide a comprehensive review of the recent achievements of AI algorithms and applications in RS data analysis. The review includes more than 270 research papers, covering the following major aspects of AI innovation for RS: machine learning, computational intelligence, AI explicability, data mining, natural language processing (NLP), and AI security. We conclude this review by identifying promising directions for future research.

Abstract:China has a significant portion of land in landslide-prone areas, and remote sensing technologies are becoming a tool of choice to investigate and monitor landslides. Although much progress has been made with remote sensing technologies and their applications in China, there is no systematical summary report. Thus, we summarize Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), optical remote sensing, and laser technologies currently being used in China, and their associated platforms (space-borne, air-borne, and ground-based). Multi-temporal optical images and time series SAR are often used to detect active landslides at time scales of years and months. The latest optical images and SAR intensity images are usual adopted to map fresh landslides, especial for coseismic landslides. LiDAR technology has been widely applied to identify ancient landslides. Combining advantages and limitations of every technology, an integrated space-air-ground collaborative investigation strategy has been proposed for early identification and early warning of landslides. Additionally, a comprehensive landslide investigation integrating multidisciplinary approaches, including remote sensing, geology, and geophysical exploration, could be a further developing trend, because remote sensing technologies just provide surface information, while a complete understanding of landslides requires more than surface information – knowledge of geotechnical parameters, geological features, and field conditions is also needed.

Abstract:Remote sensing imagery has been widely used in urban growth and environment analysis with many effective and advanced strategies being developed. However, most of these approaches are separated from each other. There is an urgent need to combine different modules into some practical processing chains. Firstly, we present a comprehensive analysis of key processing chains in applying remote sensing images to urban environment analysis from such aspects as Land Use/Land Cover (LULC), urban landscape ecology, Urban Heat Islands (UHIs), vegetation and water monitoring, change detection, urban ecological security assessment and urban environmental mapping. Secondly, an integrated system, namely Urban Environment Analysis System (UEAS), is implemented based on the aforementioned processing chains to analyze urban environment using multi-temporal and multi-source remotely sensed data. Several case studies are demonstrated to confirm the effectiveness of the integrated system and the combined processing chains. The contributions of this paper lie in introducing ensemble learning to urban environment remote sensing, combining remote sensing derived information with thematic models for urban environment assessment, and developing an integrated system for urban environment analysis.

Digital Processing and Information Extraction of the Remote Sensing Images in the Yangtze Three Gorges Project Region, China

Abstract:Multi-temporal SPOT images, ERS-SAR image, Radarsat images and Landsat TM images were applied in the study. The ARSIS method was mainly used to make fusion of the SPOT XS and Panchromatic images, achieving high quality of image results. many new geological, structural features and hazard phenomenon are found, achieving remarkable results: (1) An orthophotomap is a new type of map that is accurately corrected for geometry and is composed with a simplified topographic map. In this study, fusion of Landsat TM, SPOT and ERS SAR images was done. Then utilizing RS-OrthoMapper v1.0 software, which was explored by the authors, three kinds of orthophotomap were made, which were respectively 1:250000 map of Kaixian, 1:100000 map of Baishahe and 1:50000 map of Yunyangxian. The last one is an orthophotomap of fusion image of TM453 and SPOT panchromatic band, whose ground resolution is 10 meter, and DEM used in the rectification come from SPOT stereopairs.(2) In the study of Wanxian—Yunyang district, through fusion's of the Landsat TM 4,5,3 images and SPOT P image, a lot of the best image results with high spatial resolution of 10m and being affluent in colors were obtained. With the method of 3D-visualizing of remote sensing images and imaging dynamical analysis, 3D-visualizing maps of landslides and the landform relief, with a high resolution RS image and being projected from different directions, were established. With which, quantitative analysis as extracting information of landslides, drawing a section of landform and detecting DEM of some objects can be done directly and rapidly.(3) In the study of Wanxian—Wushan test region, with the theory and method of phase-separation analysis of remote sensing information field, which was proposed by the authors, geological and structural features were systematically interpreted with remote sensing images and the linear and circular structures were quantitatively analyzed. With a synthesizing analysis of the combined folds, faults and related major joint systems, four periods of structural deformation and the resulted deformation fields were determined. As a result, four tectonic stress fields were recovered.
