Abstract:Programming a network for innovative services or for function improvements has never been easier using Software-Defined Networking (SDN). However, the programming tasks can also be significantly complicated by the asynchrony of data plane states and complexities of service control states. In order to reduce the complexity for programming a network service in Distributed Control Plane of SDN, we propose a proGRAmming Control (GRACE) layer as a generic solution, which provides two key features, namely, reconfigurability and reusability. Their implementations deal with aforementioned challenges, thus to achieve the consistency of the data plane states and the reusability of the service control states at the distributed controllers. This paper introduces the reconfigurability and reusability with their design goals and their impact on the programmability of DCP. We further use two popular network services, ICN (Information-Centric Networking) and CDN (Content Distribution Networks) to illustrate these concepts. NS-3 simulations and PlanetLab emulations are conducted to show the advantage of using the GRACE layer for ICN and CDN. Results show that the ICN Interest delay is reduced by 19.6% and CDN request delay is reduced by 81% in extremely harsh network conditions.

Abstract:Software-Defined Networking proposes to fundamentally change the current practice of network control. The two basic ideas are Centralized State Control and Uniform Device Abstraction, which support the Software-Defined promise. SDN has made significant progress. The opportunities of SDN in carrier access networks have been largely ignored by both industry and academia. In access networks, Quality-of-Service (QoS) oriented bandwidth management is more critical; the flexible QoS provisioning could be the most important opportunity for SDN. In this position paper, the authors show that the unique characteristics of access networks pose significant challenges to the two basic ideas. Contrary to the common agreement on “match-action” abstraction, the authors argue that the object-oriented abstraction might be a better choice for access networks to make a better software-defined implementation.

Abstract:Software defined network (SDN) is a newly emerging network architecture with the core concept of separating the control plane and data plane. Centralized controller is introduced to manage and configure network equipments to realize flexible control of network traffic and provide a good platform for application-oriented network innovation. It thus be able to improve network resource utilization, simplify network management, reduce operating cost, and promote innovation and evolution. Routing is always a major concern in network management. When SDN devices (e.g., OpenFlow switches) are introduced, routing becomes different. The flow table is usually implemented in expensive and power-hungry Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM), which is thus capacity-limited. How to optimize the network performance in the consideration of limited TCAM capacity is therefore significant. For example, multi-path routing (MPR) has been widely regarded as a promising method to promote the network performance. But MPR is at the expense of additional forwarding rule, imposing burden on the limited flow table. On the other hand, a logical centralized programmable controller manages the whole SDN by installing rules onto switches. It is widely regarded that one controller is restricted on both performance and scalability. To address these limitations, pioneering researchers advocate deploying multiple controllers in SDNs where each controller is in charge of a set of switches. This raises the switch-controller association problem on a switch shall be managed by which controller. In this chapter, we first investigate how to schedule MPR with joint consideration of forwarding rule placement. Then, we study a minimum cost switch-controller association (MC-SCA) problem on how to minimize the number of controllers needed in an SDN while guaranteeing the flow setup time.

Abstract:In the Software-defined networking（SDN）,when multiple control domains are used in control services,the transient state problem can occur causing the service flow interruption when border switches are updated asynchronously. We analyze the uniqueness of this problem for SDN, and propose a light-weight protocol for safe reconfiguration of the border switches in order to improve the availability of the services running in SDN. Our solution is designed as a generic supervision layer added in the control plane to support different types of services. To demonstrate the benefits, we implement a prototype of Informationcentric networks（ICN） with the protocol, and conduct experiments using Planet Lab. The results show the ICN service can continuously serve high volume requests for contents despite the congestions built by the heavy background traffic. The performance gains in terms of the mean and standard deviation of the content retrieve delay are40.5% and 21.56%.

Abstract:Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging paradigm that promises to change this state of affairs, by breaking vertical integration, separating the network's control logic from the underlying routers and switches, promoting (logical) centralization of network control, and introducing the ability to program the network. The separation of concerns introduced between the definition of network policies, their implementation in switching hardware, and the forwarding of traffic, is key to the desired flexibility: by breaking the network control problem into tractable pieces, SDN makes it easier to create and introduce new abstractions in networking, simplifying network management and facilitating network evolution. In this paper we present a comprehensive survey on SDN. We start by introducing the motivation for SDN, explain its main concepts and how it differs from traditional networking, its roots, and the standardization activities regarding this novel paradigm. Next, we present the key building blocks of an SDN infrastructure using a bottom-up, layered approach. We provide an in-depth analysis of the hardware infrastructure, southbound and northbound APIs, network virtualization layers, network operating systems (SDN controllers), network programming languages, and network applications. We also look at cross-layer problems such as debugging and troubleshooting. In an effort to anticipate the future evolution of this new paradigm, we discuss the main ongoing research efforts and challenges of SDN. In particular, we address the design of switches and control platforms -- with a focus on aspects such as resiliency, scalability, performance, security and dependability -- as well as new opportunities for carrier transport networks and cloud providers. Last but not least, we analyze the position of SDN as a key enabler of a software-defined environment.

Abstract:Software-Defined Networks (SDN), as newly proposed network architecture, has a great potential in optimizing network traffics. In SDN, the control plane is separated from the data plane. With the help of the centralized controller, we can gather information of the network in real time. In this work, we propose a practical two-stage approach for traffic engineering that takes advantages of SDN. The approach not only assures every newly injected flow gets a suitable route that does not have too much payload on it, but also schedules the overall flows so that they are distributed more equally in the network. Furthermore, we demonstrate its efficiency in terms of port speed and compared it with port speed under the default routing decision. We also use linear programming to find the optimal solution and compare it with our result.

Abstract:With the rapid progress of mobile Internet and the explosion of its applications, network operators are bearing different services from different service providers, content providers, and virtual service providers. It is better for the network operators to converge their network controllers in order to take advantage of open, scalable, and smart traffic transmissions. Meanwhile, efficiency and low cost are still of great importance for network operators. Software defined networking is capable of supporting the dynamic nature of future network functions and upper layer applications while lowering operating costs through simplified hardware, software, and management, whereas converged networking is capable of meeting the huge traffic delivery demand in the near future by taking advantage of different networks designed individually for different purposes. In this article, to benefit from the SDN and converged network techniques, we propose an SDN-enabled convergent network for efficient resource management, E2E QoS enforcement, and flexibility and scalability for future network evolution. We also investigate the system architecture and protocol, as well as key technical challenges. Some promising applications of the proposed network are implemented and evaluated based on our established open test platform to show its superiority to current network architecture and techniques.

Abstract:As the demand for internet and cloud services continues to grow, enterprise network infrastructures are becoming complex to manage. Methods of deployment and management of traditional network devices can become cumbersome and error prone as infrastructure complexity increases. Thus, the need for an easier but highly effective and secured networking approach to confront the growing demands of network environments is necessary. In recent years, software defined networking (SDN) became an effective way that supports the future of networking especially with the introduction of virtualization and cloud computing. The adoption of SDN concepts across different organizations, offers advantages resulting in the reduction of operational cost using simplified software, hardware, and management method. This paper reviews some of the current SDN solutions developed for campus networks, wide area networks (WANs) and datacenters identified by the Gartner Peer Insights reviews. A survey was also conducted to find out how these solutions have been adapted in different organizations.

Abstract:Software-defined network (SDN) allows traffic engineering and flow management by decoupling the control and data planes. SDN has attracted a lot of attention recently because of its centralized control, flow programmability and flexible resource management. However, to support centralized control, flow programmability and flexible resource management, most of the advanced SDN designs require per-flow management, which would easily make the flow table of a software switch overflow and incur undesired processing overhead when a network scales up. To overcome such huge traffic demands, we propose a cluster-based macro-flow management framework to balance the trade-off between customized services and management costs. The key idea of our design is to group similar flows into a cluster and replace per-flow management with per-cluster management. To achieve this goal, we cluster flows with consideration of the similarity of their traffic patterns. To adapt to varying traffic load, we further propose a hierarchical cluster merging scheme to dynamically merge clusters and make the best tradeoff between flow entry saving and routing performance guarantee. Our evaluation demonstrates that the proposed cluster-based flow management framework can significantly reduce the flow table usage, while producing minimum negative impact on routing performance.

Abstract:Software-defined networking (SDN) has emerged as a new network paradigm that promises control/data plane separation and centralized network control. While these features simplify network management and enable innovative networking, they give rise to persistent concerns about <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">reliability</italic> . The new paradigm suffers from the disadvantage that various network faults may consistently undermine the reliability of such a network, and such faults are often new and difficult to resolve with existing solutions. To ensure SDN reliability, <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">fault management</italic> , which is concerned with detecting, localizing, correcting and preventing faults, has become a key component in SDN networks. Although many SDN fault management solutions have been proposed, we find that they often resolve SDN faults from an incomplete perspective which may result in side effects. More critically, as the SDN paradigm evolves, additional fault types are being exposed. Therefore, comprehensive reviews and constant improvements are required to remain on the leading edge of SDN fault management. In this paper, we present the first comprehensive and systematic survey of SDN faults and related management solutions identified through advancements in both the research community and industry. We apply a systematic classification of SDN faults, compare and analyze existing SDN fault management solutions in the literature, and conduct a gap analysis between solutions developed in an academic research context and practical deployments. The current challenges and emerging trends are also noted as potential future research directions. This paper aims to provide academic researchers and industrial engineers with a comprehensive survey with the hope of advancing SDN and inspiring new solutions.

Abstract:Software-defined networking (SDN) is an innovative network architecture that splits the control and management planes from the data plane. It helps in simplifying network manageability and programmability, along with several other benefits. Due to the programmability features, SDN is gaining popularity in both academia and industry. However, this emerging paradigm has been facing diverse kinds of challenges during the SDN implementation process and with respect to adoption of existing technologies. This paper evaluates several existing approaches in SDN and compares and analyzes the findings. The paper is organized into seven categories, namely network testing and verification, flow rule installation mechanisms, network security and management issues related to SDN implementation, memory management studies, SDN simulators and emulators, SDN programming languages, and SDN controller platforms. Each category has significance in the implementation of SDN networks. During the implementation process, network testing and verification is very important to avoid packet violations and network inefficiencies. Similarly, consistent flow rule installation, especially in the case of policy change at the controller, needs to be carefully implemented. Effective network security and memory management, at both the network control and data planes, play a vital role in SDN. Furthermore, SDN simulation tools, controller platforms, and programming languages help academia and industry to implement and test their developed network applications. We also compare the existing SDN studies in detail in terms of classification and discuss their benefits and limitations. Finally, future research guidelines are provided, and the paper is concluded.

Abstract:A major recent development in computer networking is the emergence of Software Defi ned Networking (SDN), whose goal is to provide a centralized, programmable control plane that is decoupled from the distributed data planes on individual network devices. In particular, the development of OpenFlow has demonstrated many potential benefits of SDN, and multiple vendors have started to offer commercial switches supporting the OpenFlow standard. Researchers have also made progress on SDN components including SDN controllers, switches, programming interfaces, verification and debugging tools, and SDN applications in data center networks and campus networks. Despite the progress, many important issues regarding SDN remain. The goal of this Special Topic Issue is to explore research and developments related to SDN to further its state of art.
