Abstract:The structure and catalytic properties of PtSn catalysts supported on SUZ-4 and ZSM-5 zeolite have been studied by using various experimental techniques including XRD, nitrogen adsorption, NH3-TPD, TG, H2-TPR and TPO techniques combined with propane dehydrogenation tests. It has been shown that SUZ-4-supported PtSnNa (PtSnNa/SUZ-4) was determined to be a better catalyst for propane dehydrogenation than conventional catalysts supported on ZSM-5, owing to its higher catalytic activity and stability. Dibenzothiophene poisoning experiments were performed to investigate the detailed structures of the two supported catalysts. The characterization of the two catalysts indicates that the distribution of Pt on the porous support affects the activity. In contrast to ZSM-5-supported catalysts, Pt particles on the PtSnNa/SUZ-4 are primarily dispersed over the external surface and are not as readily deactivated by carbon deposition. This is because that the strong acid sites of the SUZ-4 zeolite evidently prevented the impregnation of the Pt precursor H2PtCl6 into the zeolite. In contrast, the weak acid sites of the ZSM-5 zeolite led to more of the precursor entering the zeolite tunnels, followed by transformation to highly dispersed Pt clusters during calcination. In the case of the PtSnNa/ZSM-5, the interactions between Sn oxides and the support were lessened, owing to the weaker acidity of the ZSM-5 zeolite. The dispersed Sn oxides were therefore easier to reduce to the metallic state, thus decreasing the catalytic activity for hydrocarbon dehydrogenation.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is a commercial propylene production technology that has received much attention, but high reaction temperatures result in a decrease of propylene selectivity and catalyst stability. This paper describes a single-site [PtZn4] catalyst by assembling atomically ordered intermetallic alloy (IMA) as a selective and ultrastable PDH catalyst. The catalyst enables more than 95% of propylene selectivity from 520°C to 620°C. No obvious deactivation is observed within the 160-h test, superior to PtSn/Al2O3 and state-of-the-art Pt-based catalysts. Based on in situ X-ray absorption fine structure, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, and density functional theory calculations, we reveal that the surface [PtZn4] ensembles in PtZn IMAs serve as the key active site structures, wherein the geometry-isolated and electron-rich Pt1 site in [PtZn4] ensembles readily promotes the first and second C–H cleavage of propane but inhibits further dehydrogenation of surface-bounded propylene. This significantly improves the selectivity and stability by prohibiting coke side reactions.

Abstract:Direct dehydrogenation of propane to propylene (PDH) is a promising route to meet the ever-growing global propylene demand, but the industrial Pt-based catalysts usually suffer from serious deactivation derived from coke deposition and sintering under harsh reaction conditions. In this work, PtZn bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated into high-silica SSZ-13 zeolites (PtZn@SSZ-13) were synthesized via a facile ligand-protected interzeolite transformation strategy. In a PDH reaction, the synthesized 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13 catalyst exhibits superior catalytic performance with a propane conversion of 23.7% and a propylene selectivity of 96.8%, which is significantly better than that of PtZn supported on high-silica SSZ-13 (0.5Pt3Zn/SSZ-13). Particularly, the high catalytic activity of this catalyst can be kept during three successive oxidation–reduction cycles. Detailed characterizations including HAADF-STEM, XPS, UV–Vis, H 2 -TPR reveal that the remarkable improvement of PDH performance is attributed to the PtZn synergistic effect as well as the confinement of SSZ-13 zeolites. The DFT calculations and microkinetic simulations also evidenced that the Pt particles anchored on the Zn-doped SSZ-13 zeolite pore framework possessed obviously higher propane dehydrogenation activity, whereas the anti-coking ability of 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13 was also stronger than Pt (1 1 1) surface, demonstrating the superior performance of 0.5Pt3Zn@SSZ-13.

Abstract:The development of thermally stable Pt-based catalysts with superior performance for propane dehydrogenation reactions remains a daunting challenge. In this study, a series of PtSn-Mg(Zn)AlO catalysts with different Zn and Pt contents were synthesized by the anion-exchange method for the propane dehydrogenation reaction. To investigate the influence of Zn on the reaction performance and the catalyst structure, the prepared catalysts were characterized with several analytical techniques, including XRD, TEM, HRTEM, H-2-TPD and CO pulse chemisorption. A good propane conversion (initially higher than 55% and averaging 45.2% over a period of 2 h) and propene selectivity (higher than 99%) were obtained experimentally with PtSn-Mg(3Zn)AlO at 550 degrees C. The results demonstrated that Pt provided the active sites and that Zn was a promoter. The HRTEM and CO pulse chemisorption results indicated that the addition of Zn to the PtSn-MgAlO catalyst can stabilize the dispersion of metal particles and thus inhibit the sintering of Pt particles. Furthermore, the activities of the used catalysts were almost recovered through reaction-regeneration cycles with the burning-off of coke during five cycles.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has great potential to meet the increasing global demand for propylene, but the widely used Pt-based catalysts usually suffer from short-term stability and unsatisfactory propylene selectivity. Herein, we develop a ligand-protected direct hydrogen reduction method for encapsulating subnanometer bimetallic Pt-Zn clusters inside silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite. The introduction of Zn species significantly improved the stability of the Pt clusters and gave a superhigh propylene selectivity of 99.3 % with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 3.6-54 h-1 and specific activity of propylene formation of 65.5 mol C 3 H 6 gPt -1 h-1 (WHSV=108 h-1 ) at 550 °C. Moreover, no obvious deactivation was observed over PtZn4@S-1-H catalyst even after 13000 min on stream (WHSV=3.6 h-1 ), affording an extremely low deactivation constant of 0.001 h-1 , which is 200 times lower than that of the PtZn4/Al2 O3 counterpart under the same conditions. We also show that the introduction of Cs+ ions into the zeolite can improve the regeneration stability of catalysts, and the catalytic activity kept unchanged after four continuous cycles.

Abstract:Highly active and inexpensive catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) are required for largescale propylene production in industrial application. Compared to Pt- and Cr-based catalysts, Zn-based nanomaterial is a promising candidate due to its environmental friendliness and coking-resistant but remains a great challenge. In this study, we developed a novel multi-component structure consisting of low Pt and abundant active Zn species highly dispersed on Fe-doped S-1 zeolite as PDH catalyst. Specifically, Fe-doping in S-1 support provided anchoring sites for loading Zn species with uniform distribution. Moreover, the very small amount of Pt was applied as promoter, which is beneficial to achieve the re-dispersion of Zn species with the formation of Zn δ+ and Zn 2+ active sites. The resulting [email protected] catalyst exhibited the outstanding performance (conversion of propane: 40%, selectivity of propylene: 85%, and yield of propylene: 31.39%) as well as satisfactory regeneration ability. This improvement can be ascribed to the synergistic coupling between Pt promoter and the highly dispersed Zn species on modified S-1 support. This study opens a new way to design efficient and stable dehydrogenation catalysts.

Abstract:The Pt–Sn-based catalyst was intensified using SAPO-34 as support for direct propane dehydrogenation to propylene. The catalyst was prepared by sequential impregnation method and characterized by XRF, BET, XRD, NH3-IR, NH3-TPD, H2-TPR, HR-TEM and O2-pulse coke analysis. NH3-TPD, IR spectra and XRD results suggested that the doping of metals on SAPO-34 did not affect its acidic strength and structural topology of support, respectively. Propylene selectivity of 94% and total olefins selectivity greater than 97% was achieved using Pt–Sn/SAPO-34. The results were compared with Pt–Sn/ZSM-5 under identical conditions. The possible reasons for improvement were the larger surface area, shape selectivity and particular by suitable acidity of SAPO-34.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate a process that constructs highly active Pt–Sn alloy nanoparticles on Sn-Beta zeolite to create highly active and stable propane dehydrogenation catalysts. Sn-Beta zeolite was prepared by the dry-gel (DG) synthesis and dealumination-Sn incorporation (DA) method to stabilize Pt nanoparticles, respectively. Pt–Sn nanoalloy particles with ∼4 nm were formed constructed on Pt/Sn-Beta (DG) via interacting Pt with Sn from Sn-Beta (DG) zeolite, which is realized by series characterizations including high angle angular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) with Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of CO (FT-IR-CO) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). In contract to Pt/Sn-Beta (DG), core-shell nanostructure was realized through the interaction of sufficient Sn species in channel of Sn-Beta (DA) with Pt metal. The as-prepared Pt/Sn-Beta (DG) exhibits superior catalytic performance with a turnover frequency (TOF) at 1.8 h −1 and a high propylene selectivity of 99.0% using 40 kPa propane and 60 kPa nitrogen gas at 550 °C. The stability of the Pt–Sn alloy structure and its resilience to sintering results in a promising one-pass durability over 7360 min.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) provides a promising way to meet the requirement of propylene supply, but the commonly-used Pt-based catalysts still suffer from unsatisfactory stability and deactivation. Herein, an interfacial regulation strategy is developed to construct the Cu, Pt, and Zn species modified hollow porous silicalite-1 (CuPt/Zn-HPS-1). Owing to the regulation role of Pt, the electron-deficient [ZnOH] + Lewis acid sites accelerated the C-H activation, which was beneficial to achieve the excellent PDH performance. More importantly, the additionally introduced Cu 2+ further modulated the geometric structure and electronic density of Pt, thus effectively improving the anti-sintering ability and alleviating the coke deposition. Benefiting from the interfacial regulation and Lewis active [ZnOH] + sites, the optimal CuPt/Zn-HPS-1 catalyst exhibited an excellent catalytic PDH performance with the initial propane conversion of 30.4 % and propylene selectivity of 99.0 %. The CuPt/Zn-HPS-1 also demonstrated robust recycling stability in reaction-regeneration cycling test with the smaller deactivation rate constant. This work affords a strategy for improving PDH performance in practical industrial application.

Atomically Precise Design of PtSn Catalyst for the Understanding of the Role of Sn in Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH), an atom-economic reaction to produce high-value-added propylene and hydrogen with high efficiency, has recently attracted extensive attention. The severe deactivation of Pt-based catalysts through sintering and coking remains a major challenge in this high-temperature reaction. The introduction of Sn as a promoter has been widely applied to improve the stability and selectivity of the catalysts. However, the selectivity and stability of PtSn catalysts have been found to vary considerably with synthesis methods, and the role of Sn is still far from fully understanding. To gain in-depth insights into this issue, we synthesized a series of PtSn/SiO2 and SnPt/SiO2 catalysts by varying the deposition sequence and Pt:Sn ratios using atomic layer deposition with precise control. We found that PtSn/SiO2 catalysts fabricated by the deposition of SnOx first and then Pt, exhibited much better propylene selectivity and stability than the SnPt/SiO2 catalysts synthesized the other way around. We demonstrate that the presence of Sn species at the Pt-SiO2 interface is of essential importance for not only the stabilization of PtSn clusters against sintering under reaction conditions but also the promotion of charge transfers to Pt for high selectivity. Besides the above, the precise regulation of the Sn content is also pivotal for high performance, and the excess amount of Sn might generate additional acidic sites, which could decrease the propylene selectivity and lead to heavy coke formation. These findings provide deep insight into the design of highly selective and stable PDH catalysts.
Particle size effect of SiO 2 -supported ZnO catalysts in propane dehydrogenation

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has shown great potential to meet the increasing global demand for propylene. However, industrial Pt- and Cr-based catalysts are either costly or toxic. The development of cost-efficient and environmentally friendly catalysts is highly desirable. Herein, we synthesized a series of SiO 2 -supported ZnO catalysts (ZnO/SiO 2 ) from atomic dispersion to a few nanometers and to continuous films using atomic layer deposition. In the PDH reaction, we showed that the mass specific rates and propylene selectivity both exhibited a volcano relation with the size of ZnO, where a ZnO/SiO 2 catalyst with a size of approximately 4.8 nm had the maximum PDH activity and propylene selectivity of 95% along with a good long-term stability for at least 10 h. Photoluminescence spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 revealed that the amount of oxygen vacancies and acidity sites in ZnO had the same trend with the PDH activity on the ZnO size and reached the maximum on the 4.8 nm-sized ZnO/SiO 2 catalyst. This result suggests that unsaturated Zn cations accompanied by oxygen vacancies are the active sites for the activation of C-H bonds in propane.

Abstract:Supported platinum-tin over various oxide supports have been widely recognized as the efficient propane dehydrogenation catalysts due to their excellent activity, C3H6 selectivity and stability after oxidative regeneration. The nature of the active species of the Pt-Sn catalysts is still under debate. Here, by controlling the formation of Pt-Sn chloride complexes during the impregnation stage, we managed to tune spatial distribution of Pt and Sn species over Al2O3 and further influence the degree of alloying between reduced Pt and Sn. The structure characterization revealed the co-impregnation method tend to generate PtSn alloy active site, while sequential impregnation of Pt on pre-synthesized Sn/Al2O3 tend to form Sn partially modification of Pt. Performance evaluation demonstrated that the Pt clusters partially modified by reduced Sn exhibited much higher activity and longer life-time than PtSn alloy counterparts under similar C3H6 selectivity. With further optimization, the Pt-Sn/Al2O3 prepared by sequential impregnation method achieved over 64.1 μmol/gcat/h propylene formation rate at the 30% propane conversion with the C3H6 selectivity exceeding 99%.

Abstract:Pt/HSSZ-13 with 0.5-3 wt % Pt load and PtCu/HSSZ-13 with 1-7 wt % Cu load were prepared by the initial wetness impregnation method. Without compromising the original crystal structure and surface texture characteristics, doped Pt and Cu are dispersed uniformly throughout the surface. The Si/Al molar ratio affected not only the texture of the crystal but also the number of acid sites on the catalyst surface. The appropriate addition of Cu significantly increased the dispersion of Pt. The addition of Cu also provided electrons to Pt, affected the electron cloud density on the surface of Pt, and then reduced the adsorption of propylene and improved the selectivity of propylene. Cu can also decrease the number of acidic sites on the catalyst surface, thus slowing the deactivation rate of the catalyst and the amount of carbon deposition during the reaction. 1.0Pt3.0Cu/HSSZ-13(40) had a small number of strong acid sites (3.89 mu mol/g) and showed the best propane initial conversion (73.95%), excellent propylene selectivity (97.60%), lowest deactivation constant (0.33 h(-1)), and good regeneration robustness.

Abstract:The addition of Al2O3 up to 20% (as cementing agent) in SAPO-34 support significantly integrates metal functions of Pt–Sn-based catalyst, ultimately improves catalytic performance for direct propane dehydrogenation to propylene. Superior propane conversion (initially above 40%) and propylene selectivity (around 95%) is obtained experimentally over Pt–Sn/Al2O3–SAPO-34. The results were found promising and compared with Pt–Sn/SAPO-34 under identical operating conditions. Better platinum dispersion and higher active platinum sites are characterized by TEM and hydrogen-chemisorption analysis. Moreover, the possible metal interactions with different supports were configured. Therefore, light alkane dehydrogenation to alkene was enhanced using surface modified support Al2O3–SAPO-34 for Pt–Sn-based catalysts.

Abstract:In this work, we improved the conventional sequential impregnation synthetic method for preparing Pt–Sn/SiO 2 catalysts for propane dehydrogenation. Three different synthesis procedures (Pt calcination (PC), co-calcination (CC) and direct reduction (DR)) were performed and examined for catalytic dehydrogenation of propane. The results shows that the synthesis procedures had a notable influence on the activities of the supported Pt–Sn bimetallic catalysts. Co-calcination method mainly produces Pt 1 Sn 1 alloy nanoparticles over Pt–Sn/SiO 2 _CC, which was totally inactive in propane dehydrogenation. Pt calcination resulted in the coexistence of Pt 0.84 Sn 0.16 , Pt 3 Sn 1 , Pt 1 Sn 1 on SiO 2 . Pt–Sn/SiO 2 _PC exhibited the medium activity. Direct reduction caused the formation of Pt 3 Sn alloy nanoparticle. Pt–Sn/SiO 2 _DR displayed the best catalytic performances among the studied catalysts, with 27% of propane conversion and 99% of selectivity towards propylene. These results in the present work indicated that the beneficial role of Sn requires the suitable catalyst preparation procedures. Direct reduction of Pt–Sn/SiO 2 as prepared can afford more homogenous active Pt 3 Sn 1 alloy on Pt–Sn/SiO 2 _DR. The procedure is simple in operation and much suitable for industrially catalyst preparation. Pt x Sn y (x/y ≥ 3) with face-centered cubic structure are much active than Pt 1 Sn 1 alloy with hexagonal structure.

Abstract:Platinum-based catalysts are promising materials for the propane dehydrogenation (PDH). The Pt sintering and carbon deposition are still the urgent problems to be solved in this system. This paper investigates an investigation of effect of perovskite-type oxide (PTO) lattice confinement on the catalytic performance of Zn(Ni)TiO3/SiO2 supported Pt–Ni bimetallic catalysts for PDH. The supported PTO precursors and derived catalysts were analyzed by XRD, H2-TPR, TEM, XPS and TG techniques. The results show that the Pt–Ni alloy nanoparticles (NPs) are formed and highly dispersed on Zn(Ni)TiO3/SiO2. The optimized Pt loading amount is 0.4 wt%, which enhances the propane conversion to 38.6% and propene selectivity of 96.6%. The superior catalytic performance and anti-sintering and carbon deposition ability of Pt–Ni/Zn(Ni)TiO3/SiO2 catalyst are ascribed to the addition of appropriate Pt amount, which is beneficial to being confined in PTO lattice and building the abundant Pt–Ni alloy sites and moderate Pt–Ni interaction. Highly Stable Propane Dehydrogenation on a Self‐supporting Single‐component Zn2SiO4 Catalyst

Abstract:Current industrial propane dehydrogenation (PDH) processes predominantly use either toxic Cr-based or expensive Pt-based catalysts, necessitating urgent exploration for alternatives. Herein, we present Zn2SiO4, an easily prepared, cost-effective material, as a highly efficient and stable catalyst for PDH. Uniquely, Zn2SiO4 nanocrystals do not require dispersion on support materials, commonly needed for catalytic active oxide clusters, but function as a self-supporting catalyst instead. During the reaction's induction period, surface Zn species on the Zn2SiO4 crystal reduce to coordinately unsaturated ZnOx single sites, serving as highly active catalytic centers. The Zn2SiO4 catalyst demonstrates a stable performance over 200 hours of PDH operation at 550 °C. We further find that introducing a minuscule amount of CO2 into the propane feed significantly extends the catalyst lifespan to over 2000 hours. This enhancement arises from the special role of CO2 in facilitating the removal of strongly adsorbed H*, preventing the complete reduction of ZnOx. After prolonged reaction, the activity of Zn2SiO4 can be fully restored by etching the surface layer to expose fresh Zn species, available throughout the crystals. The combination of CO2 introduction and catalytic site regeneration strategies is expected to enable a year-long PDH operation using a single batch of Zn2SiO4 catalyst.

Silanol-Stabilized Atomically Dispersed Ptδ+-Ox-Sn Active Sites in Protozeolite for Propane Dehydrogenation

Abstract:Crystalline zeolites have been proven to be excellent supports for confining subnanometric metal catalysts to boost the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction. However, the introduced metallic species may suffer from severe sintering and limited stability during the catalytic process, especially when utilizing an industrial impregnation method for metal incorporation. In this study, we developed a new type of support based on amorphous protozeolite (PZ), taking advantage of its adjustable silanol chemistry and zeolitic microporous characteristic for stabilizing atomically dispersed PtSn catalyst via a simple, cost-effective coimpregnation process. The combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy under CO atmosphere, and density functional theory calculations confirmed the formation of highly dispersed active Ptδ+-Ox-Sn species in PtSn/PZ. The PtSn/PZ catalyst exhibited a high propane conversion of 45.4% and a high propylene selectivity of 99% (WHSV= 3.6 h-1, 550 °C), with a high apparent rate coefficient of 565 molC3H6·gPt-1·h-1·bar-1 at a high WHSV of 108 h-1, presenting a top-level performance among the state-of-the-art Pt-based catalysts prepared by in situ synthesis and impregnation methods. The silanol density determined the chemical state of PtSn species, showing a change from atomically dispersed Ptδ+-Ox-Sn sites to PtSn alloy with decreasing silanol density of supports. This work provides a general strategy using silanol-rich amorphous protozeolite as support for stabilizing various metal catalysts by the simple impregnation method and also offers an effective way for fine tailoring the chemical state of metallic species via a silanol-engineered approach.

Abstract:With the growing global propylene demand, propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has attracted great attention for on-purpose propylene production. However, its industrial application is limited because catalysts suffer from rapid deactivation due to coke deposition and metal catalyst sintering. To enhance metal catalyst dispersion and coke resistance, Pt-based catalysts have been widely investigated with various porous supports. In particular, zeolite can benefit from large surface area and acid sites, which favors high metal dispersion and promoting catalytic activity. In this work, we investigated the PDH catalytic properties of Beta zeolites as a support for Pt-Sn based catalysts. In comparison with Pt-Sn supported over θ-Al2O3 and amorphous silica (Q6), Beta zeolite-supported Pt-Sn catalysts exhibited a different reaction trend, achieving the best propylene selectivity after a proper period of reaction time. The different PDH catalytic behavior over Beta zeolite-supported Pt-Sn catalysts has been attributed to their physicochemical properties and reaction mechanism. Although Pt-Sn catalyst supported over Beta zeolite with low acidity showed low Pt dispersion, it formed a relatively lower amount of coke on PDH reaction and maintained a high surface area and active Pt surfaces, resulting in enhanced stability for PDH reaction. This work can provide a better understanding of zeolite-supported Pt-Sn catalysts to improve PDH catalytic activity with high selectivity and low coke formation.

Abstract:Propylene serves as a crucial feedstock for a wide range of industries engaged in the production of diverse petrochemical products. Propane dehydrogenation, an appealing technology aimed at supplanting conventional methodologies, confronts significant hurdles attributable to coke deposition and sintering in Pt‐based catalysts. Here, we report an Ir single atom encapsulated in silicalite‐1 zeolite modified with Sn single atoms as electronic promoters, displaying remarkable activity and stability, which is significantly greater than the previously reported Ir‐based catalysts and comparable to the majority of Pt‐based catalysts under similar industrial conditions (600°C, C3H8/H2 = 2/1). Spectroscopies results reveal that the introduction of Sn atoms promotes the transfer of electrons from Sn atoms to Ir atoms, forming electron‐rich Irδ+ species. DFT calculations show that the unique electronic structure lowers the energy barrier for two‐step dehydrogenation as well as favors the adsorption of propane and desorption of propylene, thus enhancing the activity and stability.
