Abstract:The CALMET-RIMPUFF is composed of the California Meteorological Model and the Risø Mesoscale PUFF model, which provides reﬁned atmospheric dispersion modeling for nuclear emergency response. Because the performance of an atmospheric dispersion model can be case-sensitive, a multi-scenario validation is important to understand a model's behavior and limits. In this study, a multi-scenario validation of CALMET-RIMPUFF was performed based on six wind tunnel experiments simulating a real China's nuclear powerplant site with complex topographies and dense buildings. The CALMET-RIMPUFF simulations were compared with the measurements of the vertical wind profiles, 2D ground wind and concentration fields, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The results demonstrate that the CALMET-RIMPUFF can simulate the ground-level wind with acceptable accuracies. For vertical wind profiles, the accuracies show high dependencies on the local topography and building layout. The simulated ground concentrations generally agree well with the measurements, though the plume axis showed slight discrepancies from the measurements in three cases. Because the CALMET-RIMPUFF lacks a building effect module, it shows noticeable discrepancies in the building area. However, such discrepancies do not propagate to the downwind mountainous and sea areas, which the accuracies are quite satisfactory. Thus, the CALMET-RIMPUFF is capable for local-scale modeling at this site.
Improving Rimpuff Prediction Using Calmet Diagnostic Meteorological Model

Abstract:The Risø Mesoscale PUFF model (RIMPUFF) predicts dispersion of released hazardous material and plays an important role in the emergency response system of many Chinese nuclear power plants (NPPs). The wind field over the calculation domain is a critical input of RIMPUFF, which dominates the performance of RIMPUFF. Due to the complex topography of most Chinese NPP sites, it remains challenging to provide a refined wind field for RIMPUFF prediction. To solve the problem, California Meteorological Model (CALMET) is coupled with RIMPUFF for wind field calculation in this study. Moreover, the computing scope and capability of RIMPUFF are enhanced in order to obtain more accurate prediction for the emergency response and source term inversion in nuclear accidents. Except for that the unlimited amount of grid with higher resolution is supported, a new sampling module is added to RIMPUFF for predicting the concentration of radioactive materials and dose at number-unbound arbitrary location. To verify the CALMET-RIMPUFF method, a wind tunnel experiment that replicates the topography of one Chinese NPP site within 10 km-range, is conducted. In the experiment scenario, the speed and vertical profile of the incoming flow is carefully set according to the annual mean wind speed and wind profile data measured in recent years on the meteorological tower of this NPP. The results demonstrate that the wind field calculated by CALMET is consistent with the topography. With this wind field, the RIMPUFF-predicted concentration distribution matches the measurements well both qualitatively and quantitatively. Moreover, the calculation of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) statistical evaluation metrics indicate that the random scatter is within a factor of 1.8 and the FAC2 is nearly 80%. It proves the acceptability of CALMET-RIMPUFF over the complex topography of Chinese NPP sites.
Optimization for Rapid Dose Calculation of the RIMPUFF Model and Its Evaluation Against Belgian Field Experiment

Abstract:Abstract The Risø Mesoscale PUFF model (RIMPUFF) is a Lagrangian atmospheric dispersion model that uses consecutive Gaussian puffs to simulate accidental release which is widely used in nuclear emergencies. Based on the real-time puff size and the distance between the puff and the monitoring station, RIMPUFF can calculate the dose results quickly by using the dose calculation interpolation table within its dose calculation module but the results are biased. To improve the accuracy of dose results under the requirement of rapid dose calculation, in this paper, a new interpolation table for dose calculation is proposed utilizing a 3D integral dose calculation method. And the proposed interpolation table was evaluated against the Belgian field experiment. In order to assess the quality of the optimization, the dose results of the new interpolation were compared with that of RIMPUFF, the 3D convolution method and observations from the field experiment. The comparisons indicate that the dose results of the new dose interpolation table are closer to the observed values and have better statistical metrics (0.39 for FB, 0.56 for NMSE, 0.72 for FAC2) than that of RIMPUFF (0.53 for FB, 0.76 for NMSE, 0.65 for FAC2).

Abstract:An enhanced air dispersion modelling scheme is proposed to cope with the building layout and complex terrain of a typical Chinese nuclear power plant (NPP) site. In this modelling, the California Meteorological Model (CALMET) and the Stationary Wind Fit and Turbulence (SWIFT) are coupled with the Risø Mesoscale PUFF model (RIMPUFF) for refined wind field calculation. The near-field diffusion coefficient correction scheme of the Atmospheric Relative Concentrations in the Building Wakes Computer Code (ARCON96) is adopted to characterize dispersion in building arrays. The proposed method is evaluated by a wind tunnel experiment that replicates the typical Chinese NPP site. For both wind speed/direction and air concentration, the enhanced modelling predictions agree well with the observations. The fraction of the predictions within a factor of 2 and 5 of observations exceeds 55% and 82% respectively in the building area and the complex terrain area. This demonstrates the feasibility of the new enhanced modelling for typical Chinese NPP sites.

Abstract:Based on the CMAQ simulation results,we summarize the function relationships between various pollutant emission control factors and the concentrations of pollutants to establish air quality response surface model (RSM).The cross validation and external validation are used to evaluate the model reliability.In the study of the PM2.5 response of different pollutants and the future emission control scenarios (Ⅰ and Ⅱ) in Hangzhou,we find that Nox,SO2,NH3,and VOC have obvious nonlinear response characteristics to PM2.5 emissions and that the effect of scenario Ⅱ is stronger than that of scenario Ⅰ and the effect in summer is stronger than in winter.
Evaluation and Intercomparison of Ozone Simulations by Models-3/CMAQ and CAMx over the Pearl River Delta

Abstract:Ozone pollution over the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in October 2004 has been simulated using the regional air quality models Models-3/CMAQ and CAMx. The results from both models were evaluated and compared with the observed concentrations from 12 monitoring stations. By integrated process rate analysis, the influences of different physical and chemical processes were quantified, and the causes of the deviations between the two models were investigated. Both CMAQ and CAMx reproduced the magnitudes and variations of ozone at most stations over the PRD. The correlation coefficients (R) between the simulated results and monitoring data were 0.73 for CMAQ and 0.74 for CAMx. The normalized mean bias (NMB) for CMAQ and CAMx over the 12 sites was − 8.5% and 8.8% on average, respectively. The normalized mean error (NME) for CMAQ and CAMx was 36.7% and 37.9%, respectively. The correlation between the results of two models was very high (R = 0.92), and their simulated ozone spatial distributions exhibited common features. But the values obtained using CMAQ simulation were about 17% lower than those obtained using CAMx on average. The results of simulations using the two models were not identical in certain regions, or for different types of monitoring stations. The differences in dry deposition, reaction parameters and vertical transport near the Pearl River Estuary can account for the discrepancies in the results obtained using the two models. In the upwind areas, the discrepancy in the boundary concentration of the finest nest was the main cause of the higher values obtained using CAMx compared with those obtained using CMAQ. There is a need for CAMx to provide more choices of dry deposition algorithms. Improvement of the calculation methods for photolysis rates would also improve the ozone simulation of CMAQ.

Abstract:The SWIFT-RIMPUFF is composed of the Stationary Wind Fit and Turbulence model and the Riso Mesoscale PUFF model, which has explicit building modules for atmospheric dispersion modeling. A com-prehensive evaluation of SWIFT-RIMPUFF was performed to the vertical profiles of wind speed, horizontal wind and concentration fields based on six wind tunnel experiments of the Sanmen nuclear power plant site, where the topographies are featured with surrounding mountains, sea, and dense buildings. The results demonstrate that the simulated wind flows reproduce the detail distribution of both speed and direction, which agrees well with the observations in both the building area and diverse topographies. For the concentration fields, the biases of plume axes around the release position are visible in half of the scenarios, leading to inaccurate predictions of the highest observations. The global FAC2 (0.587), FB (0.172), and PCC (0.752) illustrate the capability of SWIFT-RIMPUFF for local-scale modeling at this site. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The basic principle of Random-walk Particle-Puff Model(RPPM) is introduced.The diffusion of radioactive contaminant released from different source of early nuclear accident plum in the different surface layer is analyzed.Results show that the pollution area near the surface of stack release in the unstable layer is the largest.And the concentration of pollution in the neutral layer is the highest in some place.The RPPM model can simulate the evolution of early nuclear accident plume.
Development and Application of a Random Walk Model of Atmospheric Diffusion in the Emergency Response of Nuclear Accidents

Abstract:Plume concentration prediction is one of the main contents of radioactive consequence assessment for early emergency response to nuclear accidents. Random characteristics of atmospheric diffusion itself was described, a random walk model of atmospheric diffusion (Random Walk) was introduced and compared with the Lagrangian puff model (RIMPUFF) in the nuclear emergency decision support system (RODOS) developed by the European Community for verification. The results show the concentrations calculated by the two models are quite close except that the plume area calculated by Random Walk is a little smaller than that by RIMPUFF. The random walk model for atmospheric diffusion can simulate the atmospheric diffusion in case of nuclear accidents, and provide more actual information for early emergency and consequence assessment as one of the atmospheric diffusion module of the nuclear emergency decision support system.
SWIFT-RIMPUFF Modeling of Air Dispersion at a Nuclear Powerplant Site With Heterogeneous Upwind Topography

Abstract:Abstract The SWIFT-RIMPUFF can provide refined atmospheric dispersion modeling for nuclear emergency response, but its performance for the mesoscale range in a nuclear power plant (NPP) site with highly complex topographies hasn’t been fully investigated. In this study, a validation of SWIFT-RIMPUFF was performed based on a wind tunnel experiment simulating a real China’s multi-reactor NPP site with heterogeneous upwind topography and dense buildings to understand the potential discrepancies or limits. The results demonstrate that the SWIFT-RIMPUFF can reproduce the sharp changes of wind flows for both speed and directions near the buildings, but usually overestimate the wind speed in the complex topography. For vertical wind profiles, the accuracies show high dependencies on the local topography and building layout, and the deviation of those near the building is more obvious. The simulated ground concentrations match the topographic changes of high-altitude mountains. The concentration predictions in the downwind building area are acceptable which displays that the influence of building effects can be well introduced, but the simulations in the building area still show noticeable discrepancies when compared with those in the sea area. However, such deviations do not propagate to the downwind mountainous and sea areas, which the accuracies are quite satisfactory.

Abstract:Hazardous chemical gases will spread rapidly after leakage. For emergency response to that, people need to obtain the information of wind and pollutant in time. However, it takes a lot of time to calculate the flow in large-scale urban areas by numerical simulation. Therefore, reduced-order model(ROM) is developed to improve the efficiency. In this paper, we propose a model based on proper orthogonal decomposition(POD) and radial basis function(RBF) interpolation. We validate the model by calculating the wind field and the pollutant propagation process in a 144 square kilometer area of Beijing. The results show that ROM can reduce CPU times by more than 99% at the cost of only 0.1% information loss, comparing with the traditional approach of computational fluid dynamics(CFD).

Abstract:Quantification of the nonlinearities between ambient ozone (O3) and the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compound (VOC) is a prerequisite for an effective O3 control strategy. An Enhanced polynomial functions Response Surface Model (Epf-RSM) with the capability to analyze O3-NOx-VOC sensitivities in real time was developed by integrating the hill-climbing adaptive method into the optimized Extended Response Surface Model (ERSM) system. The Epf-RSM could single out the best suited polynomial function for each grid cell to quantify the responses of O3 concentrations to precursor emission changes. Several comparisons between Epf-RSM and pf-ERSM (polynomial functions based ERSM) were performed using out-of-sample validation, together with comparisons of the spatial distribution and the Empirical Kinetic Modeling Approach diagrams. The comparison results showed that Epf-RSM effectively addressed the drawbacks of pf-ERSM with respect to over-fitting in the margin areas and high biases in the transition areas. The O3 concentrations predicted by Epf-RSM agreed well with Community Multi-scale Air Quality simulation results. The case study results in the Pearl River Delta and the north-western area of the Shandong province indicated that the O3 formations in the central areas of both the regions were more sensitive to anthropogenic VOC in January, April, and October, while more NOx-sensitive in July.
Atmospheric Dispersion Simulation in Low Wind Conditions in Inland Hills and Valleys

Abstract:The atmospheric dispersion under conditions with moderate and low winds was simulated for the hill and valley area in the centre of Hunan province. The non-steady-state Lagrangian Gaussian puff model CALPUFF recommended by USEPA was used in the simulation. The inputs of the meteorological model included the intensive observations of surface wind and temperature,profiles of wind and temperature in the boundary-layer,and the multi-layer turbulence data from the tower. Results showed that the model was sensitive to the categories and resolution of land use data. Simulated results were compared with those of the tracer experiments. It is seen that the near field concentration simulated by the default micrometeorological scheme was significantly lower than that observed in the tracer experiment. This is partly because the default land use category and the corresponding surface parameters in the model cannot represent the actual surface conditions in the simulated area. When utilizing the direct measurements of turbulence,the modeled results were greatly improved. Modification was made for land use data,geophysical parameters and the parameterization scheme of the turbulent velocities of the model,based on the actual underlying surface features and the measured turbulence data. The simulated results of the modified scheme were in good agreement with the measured values,and were comparable with those modeled with the direct measurements of turbulence profiles. These facts show the effectiveness and the necessity of the modification.

Abstract:The simulation performance over complex building clusters of a wind simulation model (Wind Information Field Fast Analysis model, WIFFA) in a micro-scale air pollutant dispersion model system (Urban Microscale Air Pollution dispersion Simulation model, UMAPS) is evaluated using various wind tunnel experimental data including the CEDVAL (Compilation of Experimental Data for Validation of Micro-Scale Dispersion Models) wind tunnel experiment data and the NJU-FZ experiment data (Nanjing University-Fang Zhuang neighborhood wind tunnel experiment data). The results show that the wind model can reproduce the vortexes triggered by urban buildings well, and the flow patterns in urban street canyons and building clusters can also be represented. Due to the complex shapes of buildings and their distributions, the simulation deviations/discrepancies from the measurements are usually caused by the simplification of the building shapes and the determination of the key zone sizes. The computational efficiencies of different cases are also discussed in this paper. The model has a high computational efficiency compared to traditional numerical models that solve the Navier–Stokes equations, and can produce very high-resolution (1–5 m) wind fields of a complex neighborhood scale urban building canopy (~ 1 km ×1 km) in less than 3 min when run on a personal computer.

Using CALPUFF for Near-Field Atmospheric Dispersion Simulation over Complex Terrain

Abstract:Based on data from a comprehensive atmospheric dispersion experiment of high temporal and spatial resolution over a complex hilly-valley area in Hunan province,the applicability of USEPA(United States Environmental Protection Agency) recommended guideline model CALPUFF(California Puff Model) in near field over complex terrain was investigated.Using diagnostic wind fields of different temporal resolutions and various dispersion schemes,the near-field concentration distributions under various meteorological conditions were simulated and compared with the observed tracer concentrations.The results show that using the measured turbulence profiles to calculate dispersion parameters can better simulate near-field concentration distributions.The modeling results can be improved if the fitted relationships between standard deviations of turbulent velocities and stability parameters are used instead of the default CALPUFF turbulence parameterization scheme.The modeling results are not sensitive to the temporal resolution of wind fields and dispersion schemes when the wind speed is high and wind direction is steady.However,under low and variable wind conditions,the 10 min wind field is needed to model the ground concentration distributions.The modeling results of measured turbulence scheme are higher than those of similarity scheme and closer to the observed values.Overall,CALPUFF modeling system can well simulate the near-field peak concentrations over this hilly-valley complex terrain by using either the hourly wind field and turbulent measurement or 10 min wind field and modified similarity scheme.
Construction and Validation of an Urban Area Flow and Dispersion Model on Building Scales

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical model that simulates the wind fields, turbulence fields, and dispersion of gaseous substances in urban areas on building to city block scales. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach using the steady-state, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with the standard k-ɛ turbulence model within control volumes of non-uniform cuboid shapes has been employed. Dispersion field is computed by solving an unsteady transport equation of passive scalar. Another approach based on Gaussian plume model is used to correct the turbulent Schmidt number of tracer, in order to improve the dispersion simulation. The experimental data from a wind tunnel under neutral conditions are used to validate the numerical results of velocity, turbulence, and dispersion fields. The numerical results show a reasonable agreement with the wind tunnel data. The deviation of concentration between the simulation with corrected turbulent Schmidt number and the wind tunnel experiments may arise from 1) imperfect point sources, 2) heterogeneous turbulent diffusivity, and 3) the constant turbulent Schmidt assumption used in the model.
Simulating near-road reactive dispersion of gaseous air pollutants using a three-dimensional Eulerian model

Abstract:In this study, the TAMNROM-3D model, a 3D Eulerian near-road air quality model with vehicle induced turbulence parameterization and a MOVES based emission preprocessor, is tested using near-road gaseous pollutants data collected near a rural freeway with 34% heavy duty vehicle traffic. Exhaust emissions of gasses from the vehicles are estimated using a lumped vehicle classification scheme based on the number of vehicle axles and the default county-level MOVES vehicle fleet database. The predicted dilution of CO and NOx in the downwind direction agrees well with observation, although the total NOx emission has to be scaled to 85% of its original emission rate estimated by the MOVES model. Using the atmospheric turbulent diffusion coefficient parameterization of Degrazia et al. (2000) with variable horizontal turbulent diffusion coefficient (Kxx) leads to slightly better predictions than a traditional non-height-dependent Kxx parameterization. The NO2 concentrations can be better predicted when emission of total NOx is split into NO and NO2 using the NO2 to NOx ratio of 29% measured near the road. Simulations using the SAPRC99 photochemical mechanism do not show significant changes in the predicted NO and NO2 concentrations near the road compared to simulations using a simple three-reaction mechanism that involves only NOx and O3. A regional air quality simulation in Houston, Texas during a high O3 episode in August 2000 shows that using the NO2 to NOx ratio of 29% instead of the traditional 5% leads to as much as 6ppb increase in 8-h O3 predictions.

Abstract:A practical, multipurpose urban diffusion model (APRAC-1A) has been developed and evaluated for predicting concentrations of inert, vehicle-generated pollutants. The model requires only routinely available meteorological and traffic data to give the following outputs: 1.(1) areal concentration isopleths,2.(2) sequential hourly point values,3.(3) frequency distributions. An extensive field experiment was conducted in San Jose to evaluate and refine all components of the model. A street effects submodel was developed to account for the high concentrations and large gradients observed in urban street canyons. Results are presented from a second experimental program conducted in St. Louis to further evaluate the performance of the model. Predicted and observed concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) in St. Louis differ by root-mean-square values of the order of 3 ppm (parts per million), while frequency distributions of hourly concentrations are given within 2–3 ppm. Along-street observations of CO concentrations show variations generally less than 1 ppm.

Abstract:To validate the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM) developed by the U.S. Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA), the discrete ordinate radiative transfer (DISORT) model and the line-by-line radiative transfer model (LBLRTM) are combined in order to provide a reference benchmark. Compared with the benchmark, the CRTM appears quite accurate for both clear sky and ice cloud radiance simulations with RMS errors below 0.2K, except for clouds with small ice particles. In a computer CPU run time comparison, the CRTM is faster than DISORT by approximately two orders of magnitude. Using the operational MODIS cloud products and the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) atmospheric profiles as an input, the CRTM is employed to simulate the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) radiances. The CRTM simulations are shown to be in reasonably close agreement with the AIRS measurements (the discrepancies are within 2K in terms of brightness temperature difference). Furthermore, the impact of uncertainties in the input cloud properties and atmospheric profiles on the CRTM simulations has been assessed. The CRTM-based brightness temperatures (BTs) at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), for both thin (τ<5) and thick (τ>30) clouds, are highly sensitive to uncertainties in atmospheric temperature and cloud top pressure. However, for an optically thick cloud, the CRTM-based BTs are not sensitive to the uncertainties of cloud optical thickness, effective particle size, and atmospheric humidity profiles. On the contrary, the uncertainties of the CRTM-based TOA BTs resulting from effective particle size and optical thickness are not negligible in an optically thin cloud.

Abstract:Numerical simulations are extensively used as a predictive tool to better understand complex air flows and pollution transport on the scale of individual buildings, city blocks and entire cities. Fast-running Non-Intrusive Reduced Order Model (NIROM) for predicting the turbulent air flows has been proved to be an efficient method to provide numerical forecasting results. However, due to the reduced space on which the model operates, the solution includes uncertainties. Additionally, any computational methodology contributes to uncertainty due to finite precision and the consequent accumulation and amplification of round-off errors. Taking into account these uncertainties is essential for the acceptance of any numerical simulation. In this paper we combine the NIROM method with Data Assimilation (DA), the main question is how to incorporate data (e.g. from physical measurements) in models in a suitable way, in order to improve model predictions and quantify prediction uncertainty. Here, the focus is on the prediction of nonlinear dynamical systems (the classical application example being weather forecasting). DA is an uncertainty quantification technique used to incorporate observed data into a prediction model in order to improve numerical forecasted results. The Reduced Order Data Assimilation (RODA) model we propose in this paper achieves both efficiency and accuracy including Variational DA into NIROM. The model we present is applied to the pollutant dispersion within an urban environment.
