Abstract:Increasing atmospheric CO2 levels have generated much concern, driving the ongoing carbon sequestration effort. A compelling CO2 sequestration option is its photocatalytic conversion to hydrocarbons, for which the use of solar irradiation represents an ultimate solution. Here we report a new strategy of using surface-functionalized small carbon nanoparticles to harvest visible photons for subsequent charge separation on the particle surface in order to drive the efficient photocatalytic process. The aqueous solubility of the catalysts enables photoreduction under more desirable homogeneous reaction conditions. Beyond CO2 conversion, the nanoscale carbon-based photocatalysts are also useful for the photogeneration of H-2 from water under similar conditions.

Abstract:Nanosized photocatalysts have been shown to be important to many modern photocatalytic reactions. Control of the microstructure of the nanocrystals enables regulation of their optical properties and enhancement of specific reactions. Here, Cu(2+)-doped ZnS nanosphere photocatalysts with hierarchical nanostructures and controllable sizes were synthesized via a facile wet-chemical reaction. We demonstrated that small amounts of Cu(2+) doping could give rise to the formation of a variety of localized, nanosized Cu(1-x)Zn(x)S solid solutions that are separated by a continuous ZnS medium. The nano-solid-solutions have predictable band structures and an average size of several nanometers, which ensure facile generation of electron-hole pairs by visible light irradiation and quick migration of the photo-generated charges to the interfaces. With Ru as a cocatalyst, the as-prepared 0.5 mol% Cu(2+)-doped ZnS nanospheres showed a high H2 evolution rate of 1.03 mmol h(-1), corresponding to a quantum efficiency of 26.2% at 425 nm. A hierarchical surface structure with a large surface area is considered crucial for the increased activity. Our work not only showed that the non-toxic metal chalcogenides achieve high efficiency but also provides a new concept of localized nano-solid-solution for photocatalytic applications.
Photocatalytic CO 2 Reduction Promoted by a CuCo 2 O 4 Cocatalyst with Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Light Harvesters

Abstract:Spinel CuCo2O4 nanoplates were synthesized through a solvothermal method coupled with a calcination treatment in air. The prepared CuCo2O4 samples were fully characterized by diverse physical and chemical techniques including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and N-2 sorption measurement. The CuCo2O4 material was developed as an efficient, low-cost and stable cocatalyst to boost photochemical CO2 conversion with Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) as a homogeneous photosensetizer. The catalytic performance of the CuCo2O4 samples was evaluated toward visible-light-driven deoxygenative reduction of CO2 to CO under mild conditions. Various parameters of the reaction system and the synthesis conditions of CuCo2O4 were investigated and optimized to maximize the catalytic performance of CO2 reduction system. The stability and the reusability of the CuCo2O4 cocatalyst were examined. Moreover, the CuCo2O4 cocatalyst was further proved to be highly active to promote CO2 photoreduction catalysed by CdS semiconductor as a heterogeneous light harvester, and markedly reinforced photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance was achieved. Electronic Interaction and Band Alignment Between Cu Sub-Nanometric Clusters and ZnIn2S4 Nanosheets Towards Selective Photoreduction of CO2 to CO

Abstract:Engineering the electronic properties of heterogeneous photocatalysts with charge transfer regulated is an effective strategy to boost their CO2 reduction activity. Here, we drew inspiration from the strong metal-support interaction effect, and fabricated ZnIn2S4 supported-Cu sub-nanometric clusters photocatalyst. Within this catalyst, the formed Cu-S bond would redistribute interfacial charge, resulting in diverse chemical states of Cu atoms and the establishment of Ohmic contact between ZIS and Cu. The built-in electric field of such Ohmic contact benefited the migration of photoexcited electrons from ZIS to Cu. Further mechanistic studies unveiled the crucial role of positively charged Cu atom near the interface in facilitating H2O dissociation, and its adjacent Cu atom at the top-surface adopting a distinct chemical state could activate linear CO2 molecule into a bent configuration. These features substantially lowered energy barriers for CO2 adsorption and subsequent *COOH formation, and Cu-ZIS, accordingly, exhibited a remarkable CO production rate of 60.2 mu mol g-1h- 1, approximately 20.8-fold enhancement compared to ZIS counterpart.

Abstract:Local Surface Plasma Resonance (LSPR) effect enhanced Z-scheme ZnO/Au/g-C3N4 micro-needles film (3-ZAC) has been prepared for the photoreduction of CO2 into CO under UV–vis light irradiation. Photoreduction experiments show that 3-ZAC has the excellent photocatalytic performance and reusability. The CO production can be achieved 689.7 μmol/m2 after 8 h reaction time, which is 4.5 higher than that of the pure ZnO film. 13C isotope test shows that CO is produced from CO2 by photoreduction. DFT calculations confirm that build-in electric field formed at g-C3N4/ZnO interface effectively promoted the electron transfer efficiency in Z-scheme interface. FDTD simulations prove that Au NPs not only act as electron-transfer bridge, but also as LSPR excited source to speed up the separation of electron-hole pairs. In-situ FTIR technique was used to investigate the CO2 photoreduction process. The above characteristics together maximize the electron transfer efficiency, which causes the material has enhanced photocatalytic performance.

Facile in Situ Fabrication of Cu2O@Cu Metal-Semiconductor Heterostructured Nanorods for Efficient Visible-Light Driven CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is known to be a promising photocatalyst for CO2 reduction into solar fuels under visible-light irradiation. However, the issues of fast recombination of photogenerated carriers and photocorrosion severely limit its photocatalytic (PC) performance. Herein, we report a unique design of one-dimensional (1D) Cu2O@Cu metal-semiconductor heterostructured nanorods via a simple in situ reduction method for efficient CO2 reduction to hydrocarbons fuels. The well-defined 1D Cu2O nanorod arrays ensure excellent visible-light harvesting capability, and the in situ fabricated Cu2O@Cu heterostructure endows the catalyst with enhanced conductivity as well as highly improved separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers. Consequently, the optimized Cu2O@Cu heterostructure achieves an apparent quantum efficiency of 2.40% for CH4 and C2H4 and as high as 92% activity retained after four PC cycles. Furthermore, the CO2 reduction performance was further improved when applied a low external bias. This study not only provides a novel, low-cost, and efficient strategy to address the stability and activity issues of Cu2O, but also sheds light on the development of active and robust photocatalysts for energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:Combining metal nanoparticles (NPs) featured with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) with metal–organic framework (MOF)‐based photocatalysts is a novel means for achieving efficient separation of electron–hole pairs. Herein, the Au@NH2‐UiO‐66/CdS composites are successfully synthesized by encapsulating Au NPs with LSPR into the NH2‐UiO‐66 nanocage, further growing CdS NPs on the surface of the NH2‐UiO‐66, which exhibits higher photocatalytic activity in hydrogen evolution reaction under visible‐light irradiation than that of NH2‐UiO‐66/CdS and CdS, respectively. Transient absorption measurements reveal that MOF is not only a transit station for electrons generated from CdS to Au, but also a receiver for hot electrons generated from plasmonic Au in Au@MOF/CdS composites. Thus, the LSPR‐induced hot electron transfer from Au NPs is an important manifestation to prolong the carrier lifetime and enhance the photocatalytic performance. This work provides insights into investigating the photoinduced carrier dynamics of nanomaterials with LSPR effects for enhancing the MOF‐based photocatalytic performance. The photoinduced carriers of Au@NH2‐UiO‐66/CdS with two routes (localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation and band edge excitation) are investigated using time‐resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. Under visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution acitivity of Au@NH2‐UiO‐66/CdS is higher than that of pristine CdS nanoparticles and NH2‐UiO‐66/CdS, respectively, due to the antenna effects of LSPR Au and the role of cocatalyst, indicating efficient charge separation.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction driven by solar light is a green approach that can decrease the greenhouse effect induced by high CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and generate carbon-based chemicals/fuels as well. In this paper, non-metal co-catalysts ZnO/ZnS type-II hetero-junction nanoparticles with a rough surface were prepared through a hydrothermal process. When used as a photocatalyst for CO2 reduction, the optimal one showed good cycle stability and a higher yield rate of 27.8 µmol·g−1·h−1 for CO2 conversion into CO. The outstanding catalytic activity originated from i) the rich interfaces between ZnO and ZnS in the nanoscale could significantly reduce the delivery path of carriers and improve the utilization efficiency of photo-excited electron/hole pairs and ii) enriched surface oxygen defects could supply much more reaction active sites for CO2 adsorption.

Abstract:Developing near-infrared responsive (NIR) photocatalysts is very important for the development of solar-driven photocatalytic systems. Metal sulfide semiconductors have been extensively used as visible-light responsive photocatalysts for photocatalytic applications owing to their high chemical variety, narrow bandgap and suitable redox potentials, particularly the benchmark ZnIn2S4. However, their potential as NIR-responsive photocatalysts is yet to be reported. Herein, for the first time demonstrated that upconversion nanoparticles can be delicately coupled with hierarchical ZnIn2S4 nanorods (UCNPs/ZIS) to assemble a NIR-responsive composite photocatalyst, and as such composite is verified by ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra and upconversion luminescence spectra. As a result, remarkable photocatalytic CO and CH4 production rates of 1500 and 220 nmol g(-1) h(-1), respectively, were detected for the UCNPs/ZIS composite under NIR-light irradiation (lambda >= 800 nm), which is rarely reported in the literature. The remarkable photocatalytic activity of the UCNPs/ZIS composite can be understood not only because the heterojunction between UCNPs and ZIS can promote the charge separation efficiency, but also the intimate interaction of UCNPs with hierarchical ZIS nanorods can enhance the energy transfer. Abstract:Copper nanoparticles frequently exhibit unique electrocatalytic activity for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide. However, the synthesis of Cu nanoparticles in aqueous systems remains rare. Herein, we report the synthesis of copper nanoparticles by using a zinc(II) porphyrin-based photocatalytic method in the presence of polyacrylic acid sodium salt (PAA) in water under visible light irradiation, leading to a series of Cu nanoparticles with relatively small average sizes ranging from 69 to 97 nm. PAA molecules adsorbed on Cu nanoparticles were simply removed by washing with copious amount of water. The purified Cu nanoparticles show some activity toward the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide as evidenced by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and gas chromatography (GC).

Abstract:Cu nanoparticles (NPs) are low-cost plasmonic metals and have been used for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution due to their surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. An efficient photocatalyst consisting of plasmonic Cu NPs on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets support (Cu/rGO) is successfully prepared by a facile in-situ photoreduction process to form multiple nanoscale junctions for enhancement of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Compared to individual Cu NPs, the coupling to rGO nanosheets produces a higher photocatalytic ability with the highest H-2 evolution rate of 59 mmol g(-1) h(-1) for sample C, which contains 1.0 wt% of rGO nanosheets. The rGO nanosheet possesses an extremely high conductivity and, can accept and transfer photo generated electrons with no barrier. Therefore, recombination of photoinduced charges can be efficiently suppressed and the accepted electrons can be rapidly transferred to reactive sites for H2 evolution across its two-dimensional plane. More importantly, a near-infrared photocatalytic activity for sample C was obtained under monochromatic light irradiation at 800 and 900 nm due to the broad spectrum response of plasmonic Cu NPs. Furthermore, a possible reaction mechanism is proposed for the photocatalytic activity improvement as well as the detailed charge transfer condition.

Abstract:The photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with H2O to fuels and chemicals using solar energy is one of the most attractive but highly difficult routes. Thus far, only a very limited number of photocatalysts has been reported to be capable of catalyzing the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 under visible light. The utilization of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon is an attractive strategy for developing visible-light photocatalysts. Herein, we have succeeded in synthesizing plasmonic MoO3−x-TiO2 nanocomposites with tunable LSPR by a simple solvothermal method. The well-structured nanocomposite containing two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum oxide (MoO3−x) nanosheets and one-dimensional (1D) titanium oxide nanotubes (TiO2-NT) showed LSPR absorption band in the visible-light region, and the incorporation of TiO2-NT significantly enhanced the LSPR absorption band. The MoO3−x-TiO2-NT nanocomposite is promising for application in the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 with H2O under visible light irradiation.
A rapidly room-temperature-synthesized Cd/ZnS:Cu nanocrystal photocatalyst for highly efficient solar-light-powered CO 2 reduction

Abstract:The utilization of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect and metal cocatalyst decoration to form the Schottky junction are two effective methods to promote photocatalytic performances. However, combining these two approaches into a single photocatalyst system is challenging. Here, a simple solution-phase strategy is employed to integrate plasmonic Cu-Ni bimetal nanoparticles into ultrathin CdS nanosheets to enhance photocatalytic activity. The optimized Cu-Ni/CdS ternary photocatalyst exhibits a photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 28.19 mmol g-1 h-1, which is more than 88 times higher than CdS and also significantly enhanced compared to Cu/CdS and Ni/CdS binary photocatalysts. Furthermore, the 8% Cu-Ni/CdS demonstrates a high apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 21.5% at 400 nm and 12.1% at 520 nm, respectively. The as-obtained nanocomposites showcase exceptional stability during cycling measurements. The impressive photocatalytic activity of the Cu-Ni/CdS can be credited to the synergistic effect of the SPR electrons of Cu and the Schottky junctions from Ni nanoparticles. This synergy allows the CdS nanosheets to absorb wide-range visible light, separate carriers, and enhance the surface kinetics of H2 production. In addition, a comprehensive analysis is presented on how Cu-Ni enhances the photocatalytic performance of CdS nanosheets using experimental and DFT calculations. This work offers valuable insights into developing cost-effective plasmonic Cu-Ni bimetal-modified CdS nanosheets, which hold great promise in advancing novel ternary metal-semiconductor photocatalysts for efficient solar energy conversion.

Abstract:The design of efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysts has become a hot topic due to their potential applications in energy and environmental industries. In this work, sandwiched ZnO@Au@Cu2O nanorod films were prepared on stainless steel mesh substrates in the order of the following steps: electrodeposition, sputtering, and second electrodeposition. The as-synthesized nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and UV-visible spectrophotometry, respectively. Due to their coaxial structure to inhibit the carrier recombination and the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of Au nanoparticles to enhance the visible light absorption, an outstanding visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance is realized. The enhancement magnitude of Au nanoparticles on the catalytic performance of ZnO@Au@Cu2O was estimated as a function of the Cu2O loading amount. The corresponding enhancement mechanism was also explained according to the photocatalytic results under monochromatic visible light irradiation, the active species trapping experiments, and discrete dipole approximation simulation results.
Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction with a Quantum Efficiency Exceeding 60%: Time-Resolved Spectroscopic and X-ray Studies on Cu(I) Photosensitizers in Coordinative Interaction with Co(II) Phthalocyanine Catalysts

Abstract:The utilization of a fully noble-metal-free system for photocatalytic CO2 reduction remains a fundamental challenge, demanding the precise design of photosensitizers and catalysts, as well as the exploitation of their intermolecular interactions to facilitate electron delivery. Herein, we have implemented triple modulations on catalyst, photosensitizer and coordinative interaction between them for high-performance light-driven CO2 reduction. In this study, heteroleptic copper and cobalt phthalocyanine complexes were selected as photosensitizers and catalysts, respectively. An over ten-fold improvement in light-driven reduction of CO2 to CO is achieved for the catalysts with appending electron-withdrawing substituents for optimal CO-desorption ability. In addition, pyridine substituents were implanted at the backbone of the phenanthroline moiety of the Cu(I) photosensitizers and the effect of their axial coordinative interaction with the catalyst was tested. The combined results of 1H NMR titration experiment, steady-state/transient photoluminescence, and transient absorption spectroscopy confirm the coordinative interaction and reductive quenching pathway in photocatalysis corroboratively. It has been found that the catalytic performances of the coordinatively interacted systems are unexpectedly reverse to those with the pyridine-free Cu(I) photosensitizers. Moreover, the latter system enables a very high quantum efficiency up to 63.5% at 425 nm with a high selectivity exceeding 99% for CO2-to-CO conversion. As determined by time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy and DFT calculation, the replacement of phenyl by pyridyl groups in the Cu(I) photosensitizer favors a stronger flattening and larger torsional angle change of the overall excited state geometry upon photoexcitation, which explains the decreased lifetime of the triplet excited state. A Stable Plasmonic Cu@Cu2o/Zno Heterojunction For Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

Abstract:The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect has been widely utilized in photocatalysis, but most reported LSPR materials are based on noble metals of gold or silver with high chemical stability. Plasmonic copper nanoparticles that exhibit an LSPR absorbance at 600nm are promising for many applications, such as photocatalysis. Unfortunately, plasmonic copper nanoparticles are affected by serious surface oxidation in air. Herein, a novel lollipop-shaped Cu@Cu2O/ZnO heterojunction nanostructure was designed, for the first time, to stabilize the plasmonic Cu core by decorating Cu@Cu2O core-shell structures with ZnO nanorods. This Cu@Cu2O/ZnO nanostructure exhibited significantly enhanced stability than that of regular Cu@Cu2O, which accounted for the remarkably enhanced photocatalytic H-2 evolution rate through water splitting, relative to pristine ZnO nanorods, over an extended wavelength range due to the plasmonic Cu core.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) enhanced photocatalysis has fascinated much interest and considerable efforts have been devoted toward the development of plasmonic photocatalysts. In the past decades, noble metal nanoparticles (Au and Ag) with LSPR feature have found wide applications in solar energy conversion. Numerous metal-based photocatalysts have been proposed including metal/semiconductor heterostructures and plasmonic bimetallic or multimetallic nanostructures. However, high cost and scarce reserve of noble metals largely limit their further practical use, which drives the focus gradually shift to low-cost and abundant nonmetallic nanostructures. Recently, various heavily doped semiconductors (such as WO3-x, MoO3-x, Cu2–xS, TiN, etc) have emerged as potential alternatives to costly noble metals for efficient photocatalysis due to their strong LSPR property in visible-near infrared region. This review starts with a brief introduction to LSPR property and LSPR-enhanced photocatalysis, the following highlights recent advances of plasmonic photocatalysts from noble metal to semiconductor-based plasmonic nanostructures. Their synthesis methods and promising applicability in plasmon-driven photocatalytic reactions such as water splitting, CO2 reduction and pollution decomposition are also summarized in details. This review is expected to give guidelines for exploring more efficient plasmonic systems and provide a perspective on development of plasmonic photocatalysis.

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles are synthesized via various methods and have found many applications in areas such as sensing, electronics and catalysis. Light induced formation of noble metal nanoparticles, especially platinum, in solution or loaded on semiconductor surfaces, is an established practice in photocatalysis. Nevertheless, preparation of catalytically-active non-precious metal nanoparticles via photo-reduction still have room to be further explored. Here, we report a visible light driven system that can coordinate photo-reduction of CuSO4 to selectively prepare Cu2O or Cu nanoparticles, while at the same time, mediating efficient hydrogen production with in situ generating Cu catalyst without further need to add any components. The Cu2O and Cu nanoparticles in situ generated are crystalline in nature and can perform as pre-catalyst (Cu2O) or catalyst (Cu) to catalyze hydrogen production when reincorporated into the same photo-reduction system with organic photosensitizers. Our work offers an exploratory pathway to prepare target metal nanoparticles while provides some insight into harnessing solar energy for multi-functional purposes.

Abstract:Highly efficient utilization of solar light with an excellent reduction capacity is achieved for plasmonic Fe@C nanostructures. By carbon layer coating, the optimized catalyst exhibits enhanced selectivity and stability applied to the solar-driven reduction of CO2 into CO. The surface-plasmon effect of iron particles is proposed to excite CO2 molecules, and thereby facilitates the final reaction activity.
