Abstract:Like the axial vector charges, defined from the forward nucleon matrix element of the axial vector current on the light cone, the nucleon tensor charge, defined from the corresponding matrix element of the tensor current, is essential for characterizing the momentum and spin structure of the nucleon. Because there must be a helicity flip of the struck quark in order to probe the transverse spin polarization of the nucleon, the transversity distribution (and thus the tensor charge) decouples at leading twist in deep inelastic scattering, although no such suppression appears in Drell-Yan processes. This makes the tensor charge difficult to measure and its non-conservation makes its prediction model dependent. We present a different approach. Exploiting an approximate SU(6)xO(3) symmetric mass degeneracy of the light axial vector mesons (a1(1260), b1(1235) and h1(1170)) and using pole dominance, we calculate the tensor charge. The result is simple in form and depends on the decay constants of the axial vector mesons and their couplings to the nucleons, along with the average transverse momentum of the quarks in the nucleon. The result is compared with other model estimates.

Abstract:The nucleon's tensor charges (isovector ${g}_{T}^{v}=\ensuremath{\delta}u\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\delta}d$ and isoscalar ${g}_{T}^{s}=\ensuremath{\delta}u+\ensuremath{\delta}d$) are calculated using the QCD sum rules in the presence of an external tensor field. In addition to the standard quark and gluon condensates, new condensates described by vacuum susceptibilities are induced by the external field. The latter contributions to ${g}_{T}^{v}$ and ${g}_{T}^{s}$ are estimated to be small. After deriving some simplifying formulas, a detailed sum rule analysis yields ${g}_{T}^{v}=1.29\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.51$ and ${g}_{T}^{s}=1.37\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.55$, or $\ensuremath{\delta}u=1.33\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.53$ and $\ensuremath{\delta}d=0.04\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02$ at the scale of 1 Ge${\mathrm{V}}^{2}$.

Abstract:A symmetry-preserving Dyson-Schwinger equation treatment of a vector-vector contact interaction is used to compute dressed-quark-core contributions to the nucleon $\ensuremath{\sigma}$-term and tensor charges. The latter enable one to directly determine the effect of dressed-quark electric dipole moments (EDMs) on neutron and proton EDMs. The presence of strong scalar and axial-vector diquark correlations within ground-state baryons is a prediction of this approach. These correlations are active participants in all scattering events and thereby modify the contribution of the singly represented valence quark relative to that of the doubly represented quark. Regarding the proton $\ensuremath{\sigma}$-term and that part of the proton mass which owes to explicit chiral symmetry breaking, with a realistic $d\text{\ensuremath{-}}u$ mass splitting, the singly represented $d$ quark contributes 37% more than the doubly represented $u$ quark; and in connection with the proton's tensor charges, ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{T}u$, ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{T}d$, the ratio ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{T}d/{\ensuremath{\delta}}_{T}u$ is 18% larger than anticipated from simple quark models. Of particular note, the size of ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{T}u$ is a sensitive measure of the strength of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking; and ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{T}d$ measures the amount of axial-vector diquark correlation within the proton, vanishing if such correlations are absent.

Abstract:We perform the first global quantum chromodynamics (QCD) analysis of dihadron production for a comprehensive set of data in electron-positron annihilation, semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions, from which we extract simultaneously the transversity distributions of the nucleon and π+π− dihadron fragmentation functions. We incorporate in our fits known theoretical constraints on transversity, namely, its small- x asymptotic behavior and the Soffer bound. We furthermore show that lattice-QCD results for the tensor charges can be successfully included in the analysis. This resolves the previously reported incompatibility between the tensor charges extracted from dihadron production data and lattice QCD. We also find agreement with results for the transversity and tensor charges obtained from measurements on single-hadron production. Abstract:The proton's tensor charges are calculated at leading order in a symmetry-preserving truncation of all matter-sector equations relevant to the associated bound-state and scattering problems. In particular, the nucleon three-body bound-state equation is solved without using a diquark approximation of the two-body scattering kernel. The computed charges are similar to those obtained in contemporary simulations of lattice-regularized quantum chromodynamics, an outcome which increases the tension between theory and phenomenology. Curiously, the theoretical calculations produce a value of the scale-invariant ratio (-delta(T)d/delta(T)u) which matches that obtained in simple quark models, even though the individual charges are themselves different. The proton's tensor charges can be used to constrain extensions of the Standard Model using empirical limits on nucleon electric dipole moments.
New Sum Rules for Nucleon Tensor Charges

Abstract:Two new sum rules for the quark tensor charges of the nucleon are proposed, based on a relation connecting the quark transversity distributions to the quark helicity distributions and the quark model spin distributions, and on the sum rules for the quark helicity distributions. The two sum rules are useful for an estimate of the values of the quark tensor charges $\delta U$ and $\delta D$ from the measured quantities of $\Gamma^p$, $\Gamma^n$, $g_A/g_V$ and $\Delta S$, and two model correction factors with limited uncertainties. We predict a small value for the sum of the quark tensor charges compared to most other predictions, in analogy to the unexpectedly small quark helicity sum which gave rise to the proton ``spin puzzle''.

Abstract:We construct directly the quark-antiquark scattering kernels of Bethe-Salpeter equation from the quark self-energy, under two specific forms of quark-gluon vertices. The quark dressed tensor vertex is then calculated within this consistent framework and rainbow-ladder (RL) approximation. After employing a simplified nucleon model, the nucleon tensor charge can be defined with the tensor vertex. We then compute the tensor charge with the bare tensor vertex and the dressed vertices obtained in this framework and in the RL approximation. The obtained results are consistent with the lattice QCD calculations. We also find that typically the gluon dressing effects suppress the nucleon tensor charge compared to the bare tensor vertex, by about 23% for the RL approximation, and turn out to be about 13% in this framework.
Delineating Effects of Tensor Force on the Density Dependence of Nuclear Symmetry Energy

Abstract:In this talk, we report results of our recent studies to delineate effects of the tensor force on the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy within phenomenological models. The tensor force active in the isosinglet neutron roton interaction channel leads to appreciable depletion/population of nucleons below/above the Fermi surface in the single-nucleon momentum distribution in cold symmetric nuclear matter (SNM). We found that as a consequence of the high momentum tail in SNM the kinetic part of the symmetry energy Ekinsym(ρ) is significantly below the well-known Fermi gas model prediction of approximately 125(ρ/ρ0)2/3. With about 15% nucleons in the high momentum tail as indicated by the recent experiments at J-Lab by the CLAS Collaboration, the Ekinsym(ρ) is negligibly small. It even becomes negative when more nucleons are in the high momentum tail in SNM. These features have recently been confirmed by three independent studies based on the state-of-the-art microscopic nuclear many-body theories. In addition, we also estimate the second-order tensor force contribution to the potential part of the symmetry energy. Implications of these findings in extracting information about nuclear symmetry energy from nuclear reactions are discussed briefly.

Abstract:A symmetry-preserving truncation of the quantum field equations describing hadron properties is used to deliver parameter-free predictions for all nucleon elastic electromagnetic form factors and their flavour separation to large values of momentum transfer, $Q^2$. The proton electric form factor, $G_E^p$, possesses a zero, whereas that of the neutron, $G_E^n$, does not. The difference owes to the behaviour of the Pauli form factor of the proton's singly-represented valence $d$-quark. Consequently, $G_E^n>G_E^p$ on a material large-$Q^2$ domain. These predictions can be tested in modern experiments.

Abstract:At the TeV scale, low-energy precision observations of neutron characteristics provide unique probes of novel physics. Precision studies of neutron decay observables are susceptible to beyond the Standard Model (BSM) tensor and scalar interactions, while the neutron electric dipole moment, $d_n$, also has high sensitivity to new BSM CP-violating interactions. To fully utilise the potential of future experimental neutron physics programs, matrix elements of appropriate low-energy effective operators within neutron states must be precisely calculated. We present results from the QCDSF/UKQCD/CSSM collaboration for the isovector charges $g_T,~g_A$ and $g_S$ of the nucleon, $\Sigma$ and $\Xi$ baryons using lattice QCD methods and the Feynman-Hellmann theorem. We use a flavour symmetry breaking method to systematically approach the physical quark mass using ensembles that span five lattice spacings and multiple volumes. We extend this existing flavour breaking expansion to also account for lattice spacing and finite volume effects in order to quantify all systematic uncertainties. Our final estimates of the nucleon isovector charges are $g_T~=~1.010(21)_{\text{stat}}(12)_{\text{sys}},~g_A=1.253(63)_{\text{stat}}(41)_{\text{sys}}$ and $g_S~=~1.08(21)_{\text{stat}}(03)_{\text{sys}}$ renormalised, where appropriate, at $\mu=2~\text{GeV}$ in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme.

Abstract:It is widely known that the nucleon scalar charge is proportional to the pion–nucleon sigma term as one of the important low-energy observables of QCD. Especially interesting to us is the physics of the nucleon scalar charge densities. This comes from the fact that the corresponding operator has the same quantum number as the physical vacuum. It indicates unusual behavior of the nucleon scalar density as a function of the distance r from the nucleon center. Namely, it would not be reduced down to zero at the spatial infinity but rather approach some nonzero constant corresponding to the vacuum quark condensate. Naturally, this unique nature of the nucleon scalar density in the position space also affects the corresponding density in the momentum space, i.e., the corresponding parton distribution function (PDF) as a function of the Bjorken variable x. This PDF is known as the chiral-odd twist-3 PDF e(x). We argue that e(x) is likely to have a delta-function-type singularity at x=0 and that the appearance of this singularity can be interpreted as a signal of the nontrivial vacuum structure of QCD.

Neutron Electric Dipole Moment and Tensor Charges from Lattice QCD

Abstract:We present lattice QCD results on the neutron tensor charges including, for the first time, a simultaneous extrapolation in the lattice spacing, volume, and light quark masses to the physical point in the continuum limit. We find that the "disconnected" contribution is smaller than the statistical error in the "connected" contribution. Our estimates in the modified minimal subtraction scheme at 2 GeV, including all systematics, are g_{T}^{d-u}=1.020(76), g_{T}^{d}=0.774(66), g_{T}^{u}=-0.233(28), and g_{T}^{s}=0.008(9). The flavor diagonal charges determine the size of the neutron electric dipole moment (EDM) induced by quark EDMs that are generated in many new scenarios of CP violation beyond the standard model. We use our results to derive model-independent bounds on the EDMs of light quarks and update the EDM phenomenology in split supersymmetry with gaugino mass unification, finding a stringent upper bound of d_{n}<4×10^{-28} e cm for the neutron EDM in this scenario.

Abstract:Quantitative information on the tensor force induced isospin-dependence of short-range nucleon-nucleon correlation (SRC) extracted from recent J-Lab experiments was used in constraining the high-momentum tails of single nucleon momentum distributions in both symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) and pure neutron matter (PNM). Its effects on the Equations of State of SNM and PNM as well as the nuclear symmetry energy are investigated. It is found that the tensor force induced isospin-dependence of SRC softens significantly the nuclear symmetry energy especially at supra-saturation densities.

Abstract:We determine the axial, scalar and tensor isovector charges of the nucleon, sigma and cascade baryons as well as the difference between the up and down quark masses, $m_u-m_d$. We employ gauge ensembles with $N_f=2+1$ non-perturbatively improved Wilson fermions at six values of the lattice spacing in the range $a\approx (0.039 - 0.098) \,$fm, generated by the Coordinated Lattice Simulations (CLS) effort. The pion mass $M_\pi$ ranges from around $430 \, $MeV down to a near physical value of $130 \, $MeV and the linear spatial lattice extent $L$ varies from $6.5\,M_{\pi}^{-1}$ to $3.0\,M_{\pi}^{-1}$, where $L M_\pi \geq 4$ for the majority of the ensembles. This allows us to perform a controlled interpolation/extrapolation of the charges to the physical mass point in the infinite volume and continuum limit. Investigating SU(3) flavour symmetry, we find moderate symmetry breaking effects for the axial charges at the physical quark mass point, while no significant effects are found for the other charges within current uncertainties.

Nucleon charges and $σ$-terms in lattice QCD

Abstract:We determine the nucleon axial, scalar and tensor charges and the nucleon $\sigma$-terms using twisted mass fermions. We employ three ensembles with approximately equal physical volume of about 5.5~fm, three values of the lattice spacing, approximately 0.06~fm, 0.07~fm and 0.08~fm, and with the mass of the degenerate up and down, strange and charm quarks tuned to approximately their physical values. We compute both isovector and isoscalar charges and $\sigma$-terms and their flavor decomposition including the disconnected contributions. We use the Akaike Information Criterion to evaluate systematic errors due to excited states and the continuum extrapolation. For the nucleon isovector axial charge we find $g_A^{u-d}=1.250(24)$, in agreement with the experimental value. Moreover, we extract the nucleon $\sigma$-terms and find for the light quark content $\sigma_{\pi N}=41.9(8.1)$~MeV and for the strange $\sigma_{s}=30(17)$~MeV.

Tensor-force effects on nuclear matter in relativistic ab initio theory

Abstract:Within the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory in the full Dirac space, the tensor-force effects on infinite nuclear matter are elucidated by subtracting the matrix elements of tensor forces from the realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. The tensor-force effects for the binding energy per particle of symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) as well as the symmetry energy are attractive and are more pronounced around the empirical saturation density, while the tensor forces have little impact on the pure neutron matter. By tuning the tensor-force strength, an infinite (negative) scattering length in the spin-triplet channel is found. This locates the dilute SNM with only the $^3S_1$-$^3D_1$ channel interaction at the unitary limit. Its ground-state energy is found proportional to the energy of a free Fermi gas with a scaling factor 0.38, revealing good universal properties. This work paves the way to study the tensor-force effects in neutron stars as well as finite nuclei from realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions, highlights the role of the tensor force on the deviation of the nuclear physics to the unitary limit, and provides valuable reference for studies of the four-component unitary Fermi gas.

A Potential Model Study of the Nucleon's Charge and Mass Radius

Abstract:We study the charge and mass distributions within a nucleon and compute the associated squared radii based on a potential model approach. Different constituent quark configurations such as $\Delta$, $Y$, and quark-diquark are considered and compared, with model parameters calibrated by experimental measurements of the proton and neutron charge radius. The results suggest that while the charge radius is dictated by quark dynamics, the mass radius is strongly influenced by nonperturbative QCD contributions to a nucleon's mass that are not sensitive to the constituent quarks. As a result, the mass radius could become substantially different from the charge radius. The obtained nucleon mass distributions of different configurations are further used for simulations of the initial conditions in heavy ion collisions. The computed eccentricities $\varepsilon_2$ and $\varepsilon_3$ are found to demonstrate a considerable sensitivity to the input nucleon profiles, especially to the mass radius in the peripheral region as well as for systems with fewer participants.
