Abstract:Land degradation has been defined as Alterations to all aspects of the biophysical environment by human actions to the detriment of vegetation, soils, landforms, water, ecosystems and human well-being (Conacher and Conacher, 2000, 364). It involves two complex systems: the natural ecosystem and the human social system (Barrow, 1994; Scott and Conacher, 2008), and implies the loss of productive potential and increasing unsustainability and instability. Land degradation occurring in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas is defined as desertification (UNCCD, 1999). UNCCD (1999) reported that 70% of global drylands is affected by desertification that threatens some one billion people. Such an estimate is, however, questionable because it is mainly derived from the subjective judgments of scientists, surveys completed by local governments, and data of varying authenticity and consistency (Thomas and Middleton, 1994). During the United Nations (UN) year of deserts and desertification in 2006, geographers at the International Geographical Union (IGU) Congress in Brisbane pointed out that the UN should not confuse deserts with desertification. It was emphasised that deserts have biodiverse ecosystems and rich human cultures and histories (Conacher and Gisladottir, 2006). Uncertainties concerning the extent of land degradation arise partly from the lack of quantified assessments at both regional and global scales. Only five attempts to assess land degradation at a global scale have been made by individual researchers or international organizations since 1977. Dregne (2002) admitted that the first assessment, done by himself in 1977, was based on very little data and has only historical significance. Safriel (2007) commented that none of the five assessments can be considered a reliable source of information. The disparities between various estimates of the extent and severity of land degradation confirm the need for further field-based analysis and research on this theme. It is obvious that precise estimates at global scales need reliable assessments and studies at regional scales as foundations. In this context, this theme issue of Geographical Research is of significance for global studies of land degradation, although each paper deals with separate aspects of a region or country. There is little doubt that humans are becoming an increasingly important factor in changing the earth environment. Hence the latest period of earth history has been proposed to be named the Anthropocene. The commencement of the Anthropocene, however, is still debated among scientists. Crutzen (2002) has suggested the beginning of the 19th Century while Liu (2004) prefers the beginning of the Holocene. With reference to studies of human impacts on global changes, much attention has been given to inferring signals from climate proxies. It has been suggested that rice farming in China more than 5000 years ago probably had already caused an increase in the greenhouse gas (methane) concentrations, in turn triggering an increase in temperature (Ruddiman et al., 2008). On the other hand, Slaymaker (2008) has pointed out that changes of relief should be treated equally with climate in global change studies to obtain a full understanding of earth system changes. It should be recognized that land or landscape can record natural and anthropogenic impacts more directly than climate. Three papers in this issue report case studies on land cover or landscape changes in Southwest Asia, East Asia and Europe, respectively. Hole demonstrates that rain-fed agriculture and transhumant herding prevailed over ten millennia in Southwest Asia, whereas the problem of sustainability has developed only over the last 70 years due to the dynamic interplay between various natural and social factors. Kranjc investigates a rehabilitation case, the history of deforestation and reforestation in the Karst region of Slovenia. Indeed, human deforestation occurred quite early in this area, during the Neolithic Period, 6500–6000 BC. Thanks to people's perception of forest protection since the 12th Century, in particular during the last 150 years, the once barren karst region in Slovenia is again covered by dense vegetation. Zhang, Sun and Zhang present another example of successful human use of an ecologically fragile environment, unfortunately for only a short period of time. The development occurred during a particularly difficult period in China from the late 19th to the early 20th Century, when many people faced the disaster of famine in China. Under strict community-based leadership, crop production was practised successfully in a desert environment in western Inner Mongolia by diverting water from the Yellow River. One of the difficulties in estimating the extent of land degradation in drylands is short-term instability. Temporary loss of vegetation cover due to a short-term drought is distinct from a permanent loss of vegetation. Yuhas and Scuderi present the results of seven years monitoring of vegetation changes during growing seasons in semi-arid regions of western North America. Based on comparisons with semi-arid regions of Australia, South America, Asia and Africa, they conclude that the degree of recent vegetation dieoff due to prolonged drought is too severe for regrowth to occur. Their paper is a new warning sign that land degradation could be exacerbated by natural changes associated with global warming in the years to come. The other three papers of this theme issue reflect recent progress in studying land degradation using research methods not commonly applied to land degradation studies. Wittenberg and Inbar deal with the long-term effects of repeated forest fires on eco-geomorphic processes, integrating data from plot-based, detailed analyses of post-fire runoff and erosion. Their research demonstrates that forest fires could cause a significant increase in runoff and sediment yields in the Mediterranean ecosystem of northwest Israel. Although it is clear that the origins of most deserts are unrelated to human-initiated desertification, some official statistics about the extent of desertification do include the area of deserts formed by natural processes of the Earth system (for example, CCICCD, 1996). On the basis of geomorphological and geochemical investigations, Zhu and Yang show that the sediments of the Taklamakan Desert in western China are poorly weathered and the major-element compositions of these deposits are basically similar to the average composition of the Upper Continental Crust. From the viewpoint of geochemistry, their study suggests that the degree of soil formation varies from desert to desert globally, implying different vulnerabilities to soil erosion and vegetation degradation in each desert. The quality of the scientific assessment depends largely on the precision of the data obtained from field investigations. Finally, Hoon, Thomas and Linton describe the design and capabilities of a new, portable, automated in-situ instrument for measuring CO2 fluxes from cyanobacterial crusts on the surface of dryland soils. These biogenic crusts are crucial in maintaining the stability of desert soils. The papers in this special Land Degradation and Rehabilitation issue of Geographical Research were amongst those presented at ‘The International Workshop on Environmental Changes and Sustainable Development in Arid and Semi-arid Regions’, held in Alashan Left Banner, Inner Mongolia, China on 10–14 September, 2007.
