Abstract:Recently, new technological advances in biosensors, Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and wireless communications have enabled the design of low-cost, miniature, lightweight and intelligent physiological sensor nodes. These nodes, capable of sensing, processing and communicating one or more vital signs, can be seamlessly integrated into wireless Body Sensor Network for health monitoring. Using different forms of communication technologies(such as WLAN, Bluetooth, ZigBee, Satellite, GSM/GPRS, 3G, WiMax, etc.), these networks promise to revolutionize healthcare by allowing inexpensive, non-invasive, continuous, ambulatory health monitoring with almost real-time updates of medical records via the Internet. The objective of this paper is to provide a snapshot of the applications of Wireless Sensor Networks in healthcare monitoring. After analyzing a common three-tier architecture, a novel in-community healthcare monitoring system is introduced and studied. A brief review of the spectrum of these applications and the potential benefits of these efforts are also presented.

Abstract:Nowadays,increasing attention has been paid to people's health conditions.Based on the body sensor networks and the application of the architecture of wireless sensor networks in the community,we studied the technologies for continuous and non-invasive measurements of physiological parameters and the implementation platform of wearable medical devices and finally created a multi-layer architecture for Community Healthcare Monitoring applicable to the special group of persons with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes.In the mean time,a new data aggregation model called Set Aggregation Model is brought out in order to decrease the energy consumption and prolong the life time of wireless sensor networks in the system.The security problems happened in the data process are also put forwards in the end.

Abstract:In this paper, we present our recent progress of designing a real-time system, SocialAnalysis, to discover and summarize emergent social events from social media data streams. In social networks era, people always frequently post messages or comments about their activities and opinions. Hence, there exist temporal correlations between the physical world and virtual social networks, which can help us to monitor and track social events, detecting and positioning anomalous events before their outbreakings, so as to provide early warning.The key technologies in the system include: (1) Data denoising methods based on multi-features, which screens out the query-related event data from massive background data. (2) Abnormal events detection methods based on statistical learning, which can detect anomalies by analyzing and mining a series of observations and statistics on the time axis. (3) Geographical position recognition, which is used to recognize regions where abnormal events may happen.

Abstract:Healthcare scientific applications, such as body area network, require of deploying hundreds of interconnected sensors to monitor the health status of a host. One of the biggest challenges is the streaming data collected by all those sensors, which needs to be processed in real time. Follow-up data analysis would normally involve moving the collected big data to a cloud data center for status reporting and record tracking purpose. Therefore, an efficient cloud platform with very elastic scaling capacity is needed to support such kind of real time streaming data applications. The current cloud platform either lacks of such a module to process streaming data, or scales in regard to coarse-grained compute nodes.

Abstract:Data streams, or data sets which continuously and rapidly grow over time, are a prominent form of clinical data generated during the monitoring and treatment of patients in the health care industry. We propose the name Health Data Stream Analytics (HDSA) to the application of stream data processing to clinical data. Our work in this area is demonstrating the useful role Health Data Stream Analytics can play in clinical decision support, patient safety improvement and early detection of adverse patient outcomes. Two major challenges in applying stream data processing to heath care are tailoring query support for the clinical context and dealing with the clinical requirement of online query processing. In this paper, we propose the Anaesthetic Data Analyser (ADA) as a Health Data Stream Analytics System for the anaesthetics specialty and describe how it addresses these challenges. ADA differentiates from current approaches by looking at trends in the data stream rather than a single data value against a preset threshold. The trend analysis supported by ADA is a novel application in this area, and enables support for adverse symptoms monitoring in physiological stream data, alerting clinicians when a pre-defined adverse data pattern is detected in the physiological signals. This paper also describes an online query processing algorithm and the results of experiments on “real world” physiological steam data which indicate the algorithms has sub-second response times for trend queries.

Abstract:Fundamental advances in low power circuits, wireless communication, physiological sensor design, and multimedia stream processing, have led to the deployment of body sensor networks for the real-time monitoring of individual health in diverse settings. In this paper we will present a summary of the state-of-the-art in the design and development of aggregation, processing, analysis, and retrieval techniques for body sensor network data streams. In particular, we will focus on multi-modal stream analysis techniques, in distributed and resource constrained environments, for effective real-time healthcare applications. We will describe the associated research challenges ranging from designing novel applications and mining algorithms to systems issues of resource-adaptation, reliability etc., and the intersection of these. We will also present practical deployments and emerging applications of body sensor networks both in individual healthcare as well as in applications for large-scale public health tracking of communities. We will conclude with a summary of open challenges in the field.

Abstract:The emerging of wireless sensor network has profound impacts on many fields, among which medical application is important one. Wireless biomedical sensor network can provide long-term, real-time and non-obstructive medical supervision for the patients. The large scale application of wireless medical sensor network can effectively reduce higher cost burden owing to the aging society and long term healthcare for the chronic ill. It can also enhance the quality of life for elderly people and chronic patients, and decrease the probability of medical errors. This paper presents a pervasive medical supervision system based on the wireless sensor network on the acceptable cost and application feasibility. Except for bio-information such as the oximetry, the heart rate/pulse and the blood pressure, our system also provides some associated context data, e.g., the environment temperature, and the patient's video/picture in emergency situation which distinguishes our research with other similar systems. The design and implementation of the system composition are discussed in this paper. We also preliminary explore the network schedule mechanism of compound data transmission in this system.

Abstract:Using data-driven technologies to support the healthcare of the elderly has been largely celebrated as an effective means. This paper focuses on the issue of using video-based sensing technologies to remotely monitor the activities and conditions of the elderly. Although it is a widely explored field, the high cost and high infrastructural requirements of most existing technologies usually challenge their effectiveness and efficiency in practical caregiving context. To address these challenges, we propose a lightweight network based real-time anomaly detection system, which consists of video-based ADL sensing and pre-processing, AI streaming aggregating and cluster computing. We examine our method by implementing and deploying it into a real-world care facility for the elderly in Shanghai China. The results show that our method has good performance in expansibility, reliability, bandwidth availability, accuracy and privacy protection.

Abstract:Wearable sensors and social networking platforms play a key role in providing a new method to collect patient data for efficient healthcare monitoring. However, continuous patient monitoring using wearable sensors generates a large amount of healthcare data. In addition, the user-generated healthcare data on social networking sites come in large volumes and are unstructured. The existing healthcare monitoring systems are not efficient at extracting valuable information from sensors and social networking data, and they have difficulty analyzing it effectively. On top of that, the traditional machine learning approaches are not enough to process healthcare big data for abnormality prediction. Therefore, a novel healthcare monitoring framework based on the cloud environment and a big data analytics engine is proposed to precisely store and analyze healthcare data, and to improve the classification accuracy. The proposed big data analytics engine is based on data mining techniques, ontologies, and bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM). Data mining techniques efficiently preprocess the healthcare data and reduce the dimensionality of the data. The proposed ontologies provide semantic knowledge about entities and aspects, and their relations in the domains of diabetes and blood pressure (BP). Bi-LSTM correctly classifies the healthcare data to predict drug side effects and abnormal conditions in patients. Also, the proposed system classifies the patients' health condition using their healthcare data related to diabetes, BP, mental health, and drug reviews. This framework is developed employing the Protégé Web Ontology Language tool with Java. The results show that the proposed model precisely handles heterogeneous data and improves the accuracy of health condition classification and drug side effect predictions.

We discuss challenges such as population aging, chronic disease management, and infectious disease transmission, highlighting big data's role in addressing these issues. We examine big data application mining methods, including data collection, storage, preprocessing, cleaning, and analysis, with applications in disease prediction, early diagnosis, clinical decision support, and epidemiological research, illustrated through case studies. Challenges encompass data privacy, ethics, data cleaning, integration, and model interpretability, necessitating continuous technological innovation. Future trends include enhanced data privacy, technological innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Abstract:Wireless Sensor Network(WSN) has been widely used in information collection and monitoring applications. At the center of attention in these applications are data, which come from the sensor part of each WSN node. Sensor faults are common due to the sensor device itself and the harsh deployment environment. These faults may degrade the data quality from the very beginning and thus have a possible large influence on the final success of specific WSN application. Our work presented in this paper is to monitor the health status of sensors in WSN. Inspired by the latest development of time series data mining technology, a flexible approach is proposed for unspecific fault monitoring. Each deployed WSN node learns the frequent patterns periodically. Any sensor fault follows a pattern that is different from the node's learned frequent patterns. The proposed method can find fault patterns efficiently. We show how this method works well in Castalia simulation environment.

Abstract:Real-time monitoring and timely risk warnings for the safety, health, and fatigue of underground miners are essential for establishing intelligent mines, enhancing the safety of production, and safeguarding the well-being of miners. This concerns the collection, transmission, and processing of relevant data. To minimize physical strain on miners, data collection functions are consolidated into two wearable terminals: an electronic bracelet equipped with reliable, low-power components for gathering vital sign data and transmitting them via Bluetooth and a miner lamp that integrates multi-gas detection, personnel positioning, and wireless communication capabilities. The gas sensors within the miner lamp undergo regular calibration to maintain accuracy, while the positioning tag supports round-trip polling to ensure a deviation of less than 0.3 m. Data transmission is facilitated through the co-deployment of 5G communication and UWB positioning base stations, with distributed MIMO networking to minimize frequent cell handovers and ensure a low latency of no more than 20 ms. In terms of data processing, a backpropagation mapping model was developed to estimate miners' fatigue, leveraging the strong correlation between saliva pH and fatigue, with vital signs as the input layer and saliva pH as the output layer. Furthermore, a unified visualization platform was established to facilitate the management of all miners' states and enable prompt emergency response. Through these optimizations, a monitoring system for underground miners' status based on mine IoT technology can be constructed, meeting the requirements of practical operations.

Abstract:Stream data mining has been a hot topic for research in the data mining research area in recent years, as it has an extensive application prospect in big data ages. Research on stream data mining mainly focuses on frequent item sets mining, clustering and classification. However, traditional steam data mining methods are not effective enough for handling high dimensional data set because these methods are not fit for the characteristics of stream data. So, these traditional stream data mining methods need to be enhanced for big data applications. To resolve this issue, a hybrid framework is proposed for big steam data mining. In this framework, online and offline model are organized for different tasks, the interior of each model is rationally organized according to different mining tasks. This framework provides a new research idea and macro perspective for stream data mining under the background of big data.

Abstract:Post surgical care is an important part of the surgical recovery process. With the introduction of minimally invasive surgery (MIS), the recovery time of patients has been shortened significantly. This has led to a shift of postoperative care from hospital to home environment. To prevent the occurrence of adverse events, the care of these patients is mainly relied on routine visits by home-care nurses. This type of episodic examination can only capture a snapshot of the overall recovery process, and many early signs of potential complication can go undetected. The development of Body Sensor Networks (BSNs) has enabled the use of miniaturised wireless sensors for continuous monitoring of postoperative patients. This paper examines the potential of processing-on-node algorithms for further reducing the wireless bandwidth, and therefore the overall power consumption of the sensors. The accuracy and robustness of the technique are demonstrated with lab experiments and a preliminary clinical case study.

Abstract:Heart sounds deliver vital physiological and pathological evidence about health. Wireless cardiac auscultation offers continuous cardiac monitoring of an individual without 24*7 manual healthcare care services. In this paper, a novel wireless sensing system to monitor and analyze cardiac condition is proposed, which sends the information to the caregiver as well as a medical practitioner with an application of the Internet of Things (IoT). An integrated system for heart sound acquisition, storage, and asynchronous analysis has been developed, from scratch to information uploading through IoT and signal analysis. Cardiac auscultation sensing unit has been designed to monitor cardiovascular health of an individual. Bluetooth protocol is used to offer power efficiency and moderate data transmission rate. The Hilbert-Huang transform is used to eliminate interference signals and to help to extract the heart sound signal features. Subsequence segmentation algorithm based on double-threshold has been developed to extract physiological parameters. Preprocessing, segmentation, and clustering technique were performed for significant health information interpretation. The cardiac auscultation monitoring system may provide a way for heart disease self-management.

Abstract:Many challenges exist in health monitoring and management, such as continuous, accurate, and comfortable monitoring of multi-parameters, early detection and warning of diseases, as well as the interaction with environments. The challenges in healthcare raise health risks and imposes significant economic and social burden. Thus, seeking for the innovative solutions and new technologies to address these issues is very important. The development of modern sensors, Internet of Things, advanced materials, machine learning and AI technology has inspired the innovation on smart designs for healthcare. The novel intelligent wellness sensing platforms seamlessly integrate unobtrusive sensing technologies, data fusion techniques, advanced materials, and clinical practice. Physiological signs, behaviors and environmental information can be obtained effectively. By jointly analyzing physiological and behavioral parameters with environmental interaction information and using data fusion technology, the health-related activities can be identified, predicted and evaluated. With intelligent wellness sensing platform, personal health monitoring and forecasting will be provided assisting to develop personalised healthcare and health management plan, guiding people towards a healthier lifestyle. Abstract:In modern healthcare, sensing technologies such as IoT empower the quality of assisted living service by knowing what a resident is doing in real-time. Using extreme connectivity and cloud computing in a smart home, where a collection of sensors is installed, the sensors sample continuously from the movements of the resident as well as ambient data from the surrounding inside the house. Automatic human activity recognition of the resident's activities is one of the key components of assisted living in smart home. For monitoring in-home safety, the ability in recognizing abnormal activities such as accident, falling, acute disease attack (e.g. asthma, stroke, etc.), fainting, wobbling, is particularly important. The detection and machine learning process must be both accurate and fast, to cope with the real-time activity recognition. To this end, a novel streamlined sensor data processing method is proposed called Evolutionary Expand-and-Contract Instance-based Learning algorithm (EEAC-IBL). The multivariate data stream is first expanded into many subspaces, then the subspaces which are corresponding to the characteristics of the features are selected and condensed into a significant feature subset. The selection operates scholastically instead of deterministically by evolutionary optimization which approximates the best subgroup. Followed by data stream mining, the machine learning for activity recognition is done on the fly. This approach is unique and suitable for such extreme connectivity scenario where precise feature selection is not required, and the relative importance of each feature among the sensor data changes over time. This stochastic approximation method is fast and accurate, offering an alternative to traditional machine learning method for smart home activity recognition application. Our experimental results show computing advantages over other classical approaches.

Abstract:Sensor networks provide means to link people with real world by processing data in real time collected from real-world and routing the query results to the right people. Application examples include continuous monitoring of environment, building infrastructures and human health.Many researchers view the sensor networks as databases, and the monitoring tasks are performed as subscriptions, queries, and alert. However, this point is not precise. First, databases can only deal with well-formed data types, with well-defined schema for their interpretation, while the raw data collected by the sensor networks, in most cases, do not fit to this requirement. Second, sensor networks have to deal with very dynamic targets, environment and resources, while databases are more static.In order to fill this gap between sensor networks and databases, we propose a novel approach, referred to as "spatiotemporal data stream segmentation", or "stream segmentation" for short, to address the dynamic nature and deal with "raw" data of sensor networks. Stream segmentation is defined using Bayesian Networks in the context of sensor networks, and two application examples are given to demonstrate the usefulness of the approach.
