Abstract:Fluidized bed (FB) combustion has gained importance in the last years, mainly due to its suitability for managing difficult and low rank fuels, such as high sulphur or moisturized. Fluidized bed combustion’s features show outstanding environmental and technical advantages: the capture of in-bed SO2 by adding calcium-based matter, allows the use of geographically widespread low-rank fuels; the intense inert particles mixing reduce costly fuel pretreatment with uniform combustion temperature. Due to its particular characteristics, fluidized bed technology is now among the most suitable options for feasibly applying oxy-fuel combustion with the aim of concentrating and separating the resulting CO2 for subsequent transport and storage. CIRCE bubbling fluidized bed combustion pilot plant was arranged to work under air and oxy-firing modes (AF and OF). During OF, O2 is diluted either with CO2 from commercial canister or with recycled flue gas. The fuel feeding system allows the use of different fuels, blends and sorbent, expanding the plant flexibility. This study presents a detailed analysis of the results obtained during the combustion of Spanish anthracite under AF and OF modes. We will explore fluid-dynamics, heat transfer, combustion performance and the pollutant emissions results, and how they are affected by the OF particular conditions, for a wide range of O2 concentration, up to 60%.
