Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive cooperative medium access control (MAC) protocol, called ACoopMAC, that adopts new frame control formats and is completely backward compatible with the legacy IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF). To adapt to dynamic channel variation and network topology, the sender selects either direct transmission or cooperative transmission adaptively based on the instantaneous channel measurements. An extended analytical model based on elementary conditional probability is adopted to evaluate throughput and average delay performance of our proposed protocol. Analytical and simulation results show that ACoopMAC can improve the throughput performance and substantially reduce system delay, compared to CoopMAC protocol.

Abstract:Technological advances in low-power digital signal processors, radio frequency (RF) circuits, and micromechanical systems (MEMS) have led to the emergence of wirelessly interconnected sensor nodes. The new technological possibilities emerge when a large number of tiny intelligent wireless sensor nodes are combined. The sensor nodes are typically battery operated and, therefore, energy constrained. Hence, energy conservation is one of the foremost priorities in design of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) protocols. Limited power resources and bursty nature of the wireless channel are the biggest challenges in WSNs. Link adaptation techniques improve the link quality by adjusting medium access control (MAC) parameters such as frame size, data rate, and sleep time, thereby improving energy efficiency. In This work, our study emphasizes optimizing WSNs by building a reliable and adaptive MAC without compromising fairness and performance. Here, we present link adaptation techniques at MAC layer to enhance energy efficiency of the sensor nodes. The proposed MAC uses a variable frame size instead of a fixed frame size for transmitting data. In order to get accurate estimations, as well as reducing the computation complexity, we utilize the extended Kalman filter to predict the optimal frame size for improving energy efficiency and goodput, while minimizing the sensor memory requirement. Next, we designed and verified different network models to evaluate and analyze the proposed link adaptation schemes. The correctness of the proposed theoretical models have been verified by conducting extensive simulations. We also prototype the proposed scheme with the MAC protocol on Berkeley Motes. Both prototype and simulation results show that the proposed algorithms improve the energy efficiency by up to 15%.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new bandwidth prediction and control scheme for transmission of real-time video stream over wireless ad hoc network. Our proposed strategy is based on cross-layer, feedback and neural network techniques. We first determine several relevant parameters which directly impact the quality of video transmission. We obtain the topology change, the signal power information by using cross-layer mechanism. We obtain the packet loss statistics and the network jitter from receiver feedback. Subsequently, we extract their relevant features from those sample data, and take them as the input for training data of the neural network. The predicted result of the neural network would be used as the bandwidth of mobile ad-hoc network (MANET). This parameter will be used to control video encoder to adjust the bit rates of real-time video stream. We have implemented an integrated video streaming system simulation for proving our proposed scheme. In contrast to the conventional transfer scheme, the results of our proposed control strategies indicate that there are considerable improvements in the packet loss and the real time visual quality.

Abstract:The IEEE 802.11 wireless media access standard has multi-rate capability in physical layer. These different rates are possible through choosing different modulation schemes. The choice of modulation scheme depends on the current quality of the transmission channel. Present wireless devices often support multiple modulation schemes. However, there are relatively few auto-rate adaptation scheme proposed for wireless Ad Hoc networks to utilize this capability. In this paper we present an auto-rate adaptation scheme called the Sender-Based Auto-Rate (SBAR) scheme. The novelty of SBAR is that SBAR not only possesses efficient channel quality estimation similar to RBAR, but also doesn't introduce other protocol overhead on the basis of IEEE 802.11. Its rate adaptation is in the sender so that SBAR can be applied to existing equipments without modification to the frame formats in IEEE 802.11. The simulation results of SBAR show that SBAR performs consistently well.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks are usually a collection of sensor nodes deployed remotely with limited energy resources. Therefore, conservation of energy is one of the highest priorities in a wireless sensor network design. In this paper we present enhancements at medium access control (MAC) layer to improve energy efficiency. The MAC employs a variable frame size instead of using a fixed frame size, which improves energy conservation. A new approach called extended Kalman Filter is used to predict the optimal frame size. The variable frame size keeps the system degradation caused by a time varying wireless channel to minimum. These enhancements are designed to optimize the MAC layer without losing its fairness while increasing throughput. Simulations have been conducted with different network scenarios and the results suggest that our approach improves energy efficiency by 5 to 15%.

Abstract:The IEEE 802.11ac/n introduced frame aggregation technology to accommodate the growing traffic demand and increase the performance of transmission efficiency and channel utilization. This is achieved by allowing many packets to be aggregated per transmission which realized a significant enhancement in the throughput performance of WLAN. However, it is difficult to efficiently utilize the benefits of frame aggregation in the downlink MU-MIMO channels as stations have heterogeneous transmission demands and data transmission rates. As a result of this, wasted space channel time will occur which degrades transmission efficiency. In addressing these challenges, the existing studies have proposed different approaches. However, most of these approaches did not consider a machine-Learning based optimization solution. The main contribution of this paper is to propose a machine-learning-based frame size optimization solution to maximize the system throughput of WLAN in the downlink MU-MIMO channel. In this approach, the Access Point (AP) performs the maximum system throughput measurement and collected frame size-system throughput patterns which contain knowledge about the effects of traffic patterns, channel conditions, and number of stations(STAs). Based on these patterns,our approach uses a neural network to correctly model the system throughput as a function of the system frame size. After training the neural network, we obtain the gradient information to adjust the frame size. the performance of the proposed Machine learning(ML) approach is evaluated over the FIFO aggregation algorithm under the effects of heterogenous traffic patterns for VoIP and video applications, channel conditions, and number of stations.

Abstract:Sensor nodes are usually battery operated and therefore energy constrained. Thus, energy conservation becomes one of the foremost priorities while designing Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In this paper, we present enhancements at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer in order to improve energy efficiency and increase the longevity of wireless sensor networks. The proposed MAC uses an optimal frame size instead of using a fixed frame size for every transmission. In this paper, we present our study of the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) approach to predict the optimal frame size. The proposed variable frame size conserves energy as well as enhancing system performance by minimizing throughput degradation caused by a time varying wireless channel. We designed and verified different network models to evaluate and analyze the proposed approach. The simulation results show an improvement in energy efficiency of up to 15 %.

Abstract:It is crucial to dynamically predict the future frame-sizes (bit-rates) for multimedia networking. All of the conventional bit-rate predictors are based on the assumption that instantaneous bit-rates are known precisely all the time (in the absence of uncertainty) which is surely not realistic in practice. In this work, we propose a new expectation-maximization (EM) based extended Kalman filter (EKF) to predict the bit-rates, where the EKF state-transition models will be optimized by the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm (LMA). The main advantages of our proposed novel EKF-based bit-rate prediction approach are given as follows. First, our proposed EKF-based predictor can optimally estimate the bit-rates in the presence of uncertainty and/or noise. Second, our proposed novel EKF-based bit-rate prediction approach does not require a separate classifier to determine the individual frame-types as the conventional approach so our approach would be more robust than the conventional approach. Numerical evaluation of bit-rate (frame-size) prediction is also conducted over three movies encoded by the MPEG-4 standard. Compared to the existing Kalman-filter based bit-rate prediction methods, our proposed new LMA-EKF predictor can achieve much better performance in terms of the normalized mean square error (NMSE) and the inverse of signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR).

A Predictive Resource Allocation for Wireless Communications Systems

Abstract:Using event-driven computer simulations, we test a predictive resource allocation scheme for broadband wireless communications systems based on the Kalman Filter. We implemented the filter in six different scheduling algorithms and selected the best performing of them (EXP Rule and FLS) for a detailed analysis. We considered several simulation scenarios with velocities ranging from 0 to 350 km/h representing pedestrian, vehicular and high-speed train scenarios. We also considered different traffic profiles by changing the number of mobile devices between 10 and 250. Our simulations showed improvement in throughput, spectral efficiency, and a decrease in packet loss rates for two schedulers: the EXP Rule and the Frame Level Scheduler. Our predictor can be applied to any wireless system that performs centralized resource allocation based on data rate or any other quantity that needs to be estimated for resource distribution in a network.

These two new approaches use extended Kalman filter (EKF) and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) to predict the optimal frame size for improving energy efficiency and goodput, while minimizing the sensor memory requirement. We designed and verified different network models to evaluate and analyze the proposed link adaptation schemes. The simulation results show that the UKF-based link adaptation algorithm offers a better performance than the EKF-based algorithm due to less errors on estimation and prediction in a nonGaussian nonlinear scenario.

Abstract:Link-adaptation scheme has been recognized as an effective way to improve the performance of energy efficiency of the IEEE 802.11a wireless local-area networks (WLANs). In this paper, we propose a new link-adaptation scheme for energy efficiency by dynamically adjusting the data transmission rate according to network load and channel quality. We first give an overview of the IEEE 802.11a orthogonal frequency domain multiplexing (OFDM) physical layer and the distributed coordination function (DCF) of the IEEE 802.11 MAC. Then, based on the theoretical goodput analysis, we proposed a new method to enhance the energy efficiency via optimizing the goodput performance using nonlinear optimization with constraints. Despite the nonlinearity in the objective function and the constraints, we show that the energy efficiency optimization can be efficiently solved for global optimality through a convex optimization technique. Our simulation results show that our link-adaptation scheme enhances the energy efficiency as well as the goodput performance of an IEEE 802.11a wireless LAN through dynamic frame length control, contention window (CW) selection, and PHY rate selection, depending on the wireless channel condition. Moreover, the proposed scheme can be extended to address some similar problems in other kinds of networks, such as congestion control, admission control, and power control.

Abstract:In this paper, we studied the impact of different frame sizes on the throughput of IEEE802.11 Wireless LAN. We utilized the Gilbert-Elliot Burst Channel model to simulate wireless links. The main objective here is to get the optimal frame size in terms of network throughput and to check the effect of using fragmentation and de-fragmentation on throughput. Through simulations, it is shown that with good channel quality, network throughput will be increasing with increasing the frame size. But with bad channel quality, this rule is no longer hold, in this case, using fragmentation can supply great gain in term of throughput.

Abstract:In mobile radio, Rayleigh fading poses the main threat to accurate data transmission. To solve this problem, an adaptive prediction algorithm of the Rayleigh fading channel is investigated here. We implement the adaptive method based on an autoregressive model of the past fading measurements in the sense of LMSE and predict the future fading multiplicative gain ahead. To mitigate the influence of the noise interference and the disturbance of the non-stationary environment factors, the combination of a pre-filter and gamma-LMS prediction error filter is used. Lastly we give the performance evaluation and the parameters analysis for the prediction algorithm based on simulations. It shows that the prediction scheme has the great tracking capability in both slow and fast fading situations.

Abstract:Frame length control has been widely applied to traditional communication system to improve their performance. However, most of the existing research using the data transmission efficiency oriented approach can not adapt to situation of Internet of Thing (IoT), where quality of received information is more important. In this paper, based on our former work where compressive sensing is applied to facilitate efficient wireless information transmission over lossy communication links, we further investigate frame length effect on signal/information transmission. Noting that correctly received packets corresponds to a deterministic projection matrix which shows inefficiency when using large packet length. To cope with this problem, we first analyze the impact of bit error rate and signal sparsity on frame length control in signal/information transmission, then adopt traditional communication technique-data interleaving to optimize its performance. Extensive simulations has been conducted and results show that signal/information transmission efficiency can be quite different compared with data transmission efficiency, which inspires us to choose different optimal frame length to optimize different communication demand.
A Hypernetwork Based Framework for Non-Stationary Channel Prediction

Abstract:In order to break through the development bottleneck of modern wireless communication networks, a critical issue is the out-of-date channel state information (CSI) in high mobility scenarios. In general, non-stationary CSI has statistical properties which vary with time, implying that the data distribution changes continuously over time. This temporal distribution shift behavior undermines the accurate channel prediction and it is still an open problem in the related literature. In this paper, a hypernetwork based framework is proposed for non-stationary channel prediction. The framework aims to dynamically update the neural network (NN) parameters as the wireless channel changes to automatically adapt to various input CSI distributions. Based on this framework, we focus on low-complexity hypernetwork design and present a deep learning (DL) based channel prediction method, termed as LPCNet, which improves the CSI prediction accuracy with acceptable complexity. Moreover, to maximize the achievable downlink spectral efficiency (SE), a joint channel prediction and beamforming (BF) method is developed, termed as JLPCNet, which seeks to predict the BF vector. Our numerical results showcase the effectiveness and flexibility of the proposed framework, and demonstrate the superior performance of LPCNet and JLPCNet in various scenarios for fixed and varying user speeds.
