Abstract:Nuclear fission is a large-amplitude complex and non-adiabatic non-equilibrium quantum many-body process. In recent years, remarkable progress in studies of microscopic fission dynamics has been made with the development of computing capabilities. This review briefly introduced the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), which is for describing the non-adiabatic fission process, and the time-dependent generator coordinate method (TD-GCM), which is for describing the adiabatic fission process. Based on the TD-DFT, we have obtained some new insights about the role of pairing correlations, fluctuation effects, dissipation effects, non-adiabatic effects, energy dependencies, entanglements between fragments in the fission process. Recently we have extended the TD-DFT framework for fission with finite-temperatures and dynamical fluctuations. The progress in constrained parallel calculations of multi-dimensional potential energy surfaces has been discussed. The role of non-adiabatic effects is significant in the later part of fission evolution, which leads a larger scission deformation. It is a longstanding problem that TD-DFT results are deterministic with insufficient fluctuations. To this end, we implemented random transitions between single-particle levels to mimic dynamical fluctuations. The dynamical fluctuations are important to obtain a spreading distribution of fission observables within the TD-DFT. In addition, the dynamical fluctuations are also essential for the origin of the long-neck fission channel. The dissipation coefficients have been extracted by mapping the microscopic fission trajectories into the classical dynamical equation. The energy dependence, pairing dependence and shape dependence of the dissipation coefficients are obtained, which is useful for constraining phenomenological fission models. Pairing as a lubricant is important for static and dynamical fission. At high excitations, the pairing fades away and has rapid fluctuations while density evolutions are slow. Studies reveal that thermal excitations rather than fluctuations are responsible for the damping of dynamical pairing energies. The energy dependencies in fission probabilities and fission mechanisms have been studied based on the finite temperature DFT. The fission evolution time becomes increased as initial temperatures increased. Thus fluctuations are the main driving force for fission at high temperatures. The finite-temperature TD-DFT can reasonably describe the energy dependence of total kinetic energies and energy sharing between two fragments. The light fragment has a higher excitation energy than that of the heavy fragment and their difference is reduced at high excitations. The entanglement between fission fragments has now attracted great interests and is a promising direction. The entanglement is related to the sharing of particles and energies between two fragments, and correlations between multiple post-fission observables. The particle-number projection based on the TD-DFT can produce a spreading distribution of fission yields. The applications of the microscopic fission theory to very neutron-rich nuclei around the end-point of r-process have also been presented. The microscopic TD-DFT calculations don't found very asymmetric fission channels as predicted by semi-empirical models. Finally we expect a comprehensive and more accurate nuclear fission theory in the future can be valuable for innovative applications.
