Abstract:A damage detection algorithm based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was implemented in this study using the statistical properties of structural dynamic responses as input for the ANN. Sensitivity analysis is performed to study the feasibility of using the changes of variances and covariances of the dynamic responses of the structure as input to the ANN. A finite element (FE) model of a one-span simply supported beam railway bridge was developed in ABAQUS (R), considering both single damage case and multi-damage case. A Back-Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) was built and trained to perform damage detection. A series of numerical tests on the FE model with different vehicle properties was conducted to prove the validity and efficiency of the proposed approach. The results reveal not only that the ANN, together with the statistics, can correctly estimate the location and severity of damage;but also that the identification of the damage location is more difficult than that of the damage severity. In summary, it is concluded that the use of statistical property of the structural dynamic responses as damage index along with the Artificial Neural Network as tool for damage detection for an idealized model of a bridge is reliable and effective. Abstract:Taking cable-stayed Kap Shui Mun Bridge as an example, this paper presents a new damage locating method for cable-stayed bridges based on the combination of cable tension index and neural network technique. By using BP network, damage localization for 12 potential damage cases are simulated based on a high-precision FE model. Taking cable tension indices as inputs of neural network for both training and testing, damage locations are indicated by the outputs of the network. The outstanding feature of the method is that a good result can be obtained by using only fundamental natural frequencies of a few stayed cables. Because measurement of fundamental natural frequencies of a few stayed cables is much easier than some other damage-oriented measurement, the method has great practical value. The method can be easily used for damage locating of cable suspension bridges.

Abstract:A damage evaluation method for bridges,using their online dynamic responses under passing vehicles,is proposed.The perturbation of the elemental flexural stiffness is used as an index for bridge damage identification.The train-induced bridge responses and the response sensitivities to the damage indexes are calculated based on the train-bridge dynamic interaction theory.Using the response differences between different states as restriction conditions,the sensitivity equation is solved by the least-squares method to get the damage indices,and then the damages are located and quantified by the finite element model updating technique and numerical iteration.A numerical example shows that the proposed damage identification method is insensitive to the railway irregularities and the measurement noises,and that the absolute damage or relative damage of the structure can be effectively identified by acceleration,velocity or deflection responses in railway bridges.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring has become an important research topic in conjunction with damage assessment and safety evaluation of structures. The use of system identification approaches for damage detection has been expanded in recent years owing to the advancements in signal analysis and information processing techniques. Soft computing techniques such as neural networks and genetic algorithm have been utilized increasingly for this end due to their excellent pattern recognition capability. In this study, a neural networks-based damage detection method using the modal properties is presented, which can effectively consider the modelling errors in the baseline finite element model from which the training patterns are to be generated. The differences or the ratios of the mode shape components between before and after damage are used as the input to the neural networks in this method, since they are found to be less sensitive to the modelling errors than the mode shapes themselves. Two numerical example analyses on a simple beam and a multi-girder bridge are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results of laboratory test on a simply supported bridge model and field test on a bridge with multiple girders confirm the applicability of the present method.

Abstract:Systematic research on the step-by-step detection for damage in cablestayed bridge was made based on the neural network technology.The concrete procedure of step-by-step detection for damage in the cable-stayed bridge and the suitable parameters for damage identification in each step were proposed to achieve a resultful identification of damage in principal members,that is,cables and girder of cable-stayed bridge.The probabilistic neural network was adopted to determine the type of damaged elements,and the radial basis function(RBF) network was chosen to fulfill the localization and quantification of damage.Damage simulation analysis for the cable-stayed bridge of Runyang Bridge indicates that(1) the influence of noise on the identification results of the probabilistic neural network can be significantly decreased by averaging the test data;(2) the noise level slightly affects the ability of the two RBF networks to identify the damage location and extent.The step-by-step damage identification method for long-span cable-stayed bridge by use of different neural networks is beneficial to the improvement on both the efficiency and exactness of damage detection and the feasibility of applying the damage identification method in real structures.

Abstract:A neural-network-based damage detection approach with the direct use of actual incomplete time series of earthquake response is developed for a suspension bridge. Two neural networks are constructed and trained using the segment of the timeseries of seismic responses on several locations of the bridge, when earthquakeis in small level, to identify the transversal and vertical velocities responsesat the deck in the middle of the main span of the suspension bridge. The two neural networks are assumed as nonp rametric models for the bridge in health condition before the earthquake occurred. The performance of the trained emulator neural network models for the suspension bridge is evaluated by numerical simulation. The RRMS error between the forecast responses and the measurements in different stages are decided. Results show that the RRMS errors corresponding to the transversal and vertical velocities in the middle of the m in span have a variance in different segments. This results mean that occurrence of damages in some structural members is possible. This analysis result is testified by inspection result that broken stay cables have been found after the earthquake. The proposed approach is a non-parametric damage detection strategy, in which a prior information about the exact model of the suspension bridge is not needed. The proposed strategy has a significant advantage when dealing with large-scale structures inreal-word.

Abstract:This paper is intended to introduce a two-stage detection method to solve the multidamage problem in bridges. Vibration analysis is conducted to acquire the dynamic fingerprints which are regarded as information sources. Bayesian fusion is used to integrate these sources and preliminarily locate the damage. Then, the RSNB method which combines rough set theory and Naive-Bayes classifier is proposed to simplify the sample dimensions and fuse the remaining attributes for damage extent detection. A numerical simulation of a real structure, the Sishui Bridge in Shenyang, China, is conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed detection method. Data fusion based method is compared with single-valued index method at the damage localization stage. The proposed RSNB method is compared with the Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) method at the damage qualification stage. The results show that the proposed two-stage damage detection method has better performances in regard to transparency, accuracy, efficiency, noise robustness, and stability. Furthermore, an ambient excitation modal test was carried out on the bridge to obtain the vibration responses and assess the damage condition with the proposed method. This novel approach is applicable for early damage detection and provides a basis for bridge management and maintenance.

Abstract:This paper presents an intelligent structural damage identification model, where three kinds of intelligent information processing techniques, i.e. fractal theory, probabilistic neural network (PNN) and data fusion, are integrated to implement damage identification from multi-sensor data. This intelligent model proposed consists of 4 modules, which are data preprocessing, box-counting dimension extraction, PNN decision, and fusion decision output modules. The efficiency of the intelligent model proposed is validated by detecting both single- and multi-damage patterns of a two-span concrete-filled steel tubular arch bridge in service. The results show that the intelligent model proposed can not only extract nonlinear features through the fractal theory from the vibration response data, but also provide more reasonable and reliable damage assessment results, and have excellent tolerance and robustness capabilities. Abstract:A damage-detection-oriented finite element model of a cable-stayed highway bridge is established and the modal analysis is then carried out. Modal frequency, displacement modal shape and curvature modal shape are included in BP neural network input vector. BP neural network models are established for bridge damage detection. The result indicates that the method based on vibration modal analysis theory and BP neural networks can detect both the position and degree of the damage.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an effective approach for identifying damages in the Z24 bridge, a large-scale bridge in Switzerland. The dataset of the Z24 bridge is evaluated as a benchmark, reflecting the behavior of a real structure that has been used for numerous studies. However, most of the previous studies have only addressed the issues of updating the model or estimating the location and severity of damages. The core idea behind our proposed approach is to leverage the strengths of two effective Machine Learning (ML) algorithms: K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN), to assess both the location and severity of damages in the Z24 bridge. First, we employ KNN, an unsupervised learning algorithm, for pinpointing the damage location. This strategy proves highly efficient, significantly reducing computation time by circumventing the need for a loss function during KNN training. By adopting this approach, KNN effectively mitigates the risk of encountering local minima in the ANN optimization process. Subsequently, we deploy ANN to determine the damage severity. When compared to previous studies on the Z24 bridge, our proposed method (KNN-ANN) exhibits promising results. Furthermore, our results illustrate that KNN-ANN consistently outperforms traditional ANN methodologies.

Abstract:According to the characteristics of self-anchored suspension bridge, a new method to detect damage is introduced in this paper.It works in two stages.First, a BP neural network model is built to predict damaged position. Next, based on the characteristics of genetic algorithm and simulated annealing algorithm, a new approach, genetic-simulated annealing algorithm, is put forward to identify damage extent of detected positions. Compared with the traditional genetic algorithm, the global convergence effect of this algorithm is enhanced by using of the Metropolis acceptance rule of the simulated annealing algorithm in the searching process.

Abstract:A damage identification approach using train-induced responses and sensitivity analysis is proposed for the nondestructive evaluation of railway bridges. The dynamic responses of railway bridges under moving trains composed of multiple vehicles are calculated by a train–bridge dynamic interaction analysis. Using the stiffness variation of the bridge element as an index for damage identification, the sensitivities of train-induced bridge responses to structural damage are analyzed and the sensitivity matrices are formed. By comparing the theoretical measurement responses of one measurement point in two different states, the damage indices of all elements are updated iteratively, and finally the absolute or relative damage is located and quantified. A three-span continuous bridge numerical example proves that the proposed dynamic response sensitivity-based FE model updating damage identification method is not only effective to detect local damage of railway bridges, but also insensitive to the track irregularity and the measurement noise.

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring, Ahead of Print. With the growing number of well-aged bridges and the urgency in developing reliable, (pseudo-) real-time monitoring of structural safety and integrity, there is a worldwide and widespread campaign toward transforming structural health monitoring practice. Among these attempts, the application of data-driven approaches in developing damage identification techniques has received particular attention in recent years. Given the growing volume of structural health monitoring data, the power of data-driven approaches has been further exploited. These efforts have been predominantly focused on building and training algorithms using direct measurements from bridges. Although recent years have seen transformative technologies in producing cheap and wireless sensors, network-wide bridge instrumentation is logistically difficult and expensive. This has led to a new group of structural health monitoring systems entitled indirect or drive-by approaches. In drive-by systems, measurements from an instrumented vehicle are used to extract structural damage signatures. In other words, in these systems, the instrumented vehicle acts as both actuator and receiver while passing over a bridge. The main challenge in deploying drive-by approaches for damage identification purposes is that the signals collected on drive-by vehicles also embody signatures from the vehicle, road/rail profile and are easily contaminated by environmental and operational conditions. Furthermore, the majority of current drive-by damage identification systems rely on prior knowledge of vehicle or bridge dynamic characteristics which has led to limited application of the concept in practice so far. To address these challenges, this study employs a powerful class of deep learning algorithm to develop a damage identification system using measurements on an instrumented travelling train. The proposed algorithm is capable of automatically extracting damage signatures from train-borne measurements only. To demonstrate the algorithm's capability, the method is applied to measurements collected on a model instrumented train travelling on a simply supported model steel bridge. For this purpose, a deep convolutional neural network is built, optimised, trained and tested to detect damage using acceleration signals collected on the instrumented train only. The hyperparameters of the algorithm are optimised using the Bayesian optimisation technique. The accuracy of the algorithm is experimentally tested for four positive damage scenarios (combination of two different locations and intensity) and three different travelling speeds. This is the first demonstration of the data-driven drive-by damage identification system under scaled operational environment conditions. The performance of the proposed method is discussed under different travelling speeds and different damage states. The result shows that the proposed method can accurately and automatically detect and classify damage under varying speed, rail irregularities and operational noise using train-borne measurements only and offers a great promise in transforming the future of bridge damage identification system.

Abstract:The on-board damage detection methods are recently applied to the structural health monitoring (SHM) for railway bridge, and with more economical and efficient than the traditional methods. However, to improve the calculation efficiency and avoid the detection sensitivity of the on-board methods decreasing, most researchers always leave out the track structure in simulation models, while it is not consistent with the complex actual situation. To realize the accurate detection, a novel on-board damage detection method for heavy-haul railway bridge using bogie accelerations is put forward, which is availably implemented for both of damage localization and damage quantification. A relatively complete model considering train–track–bridge interaction is established, and a model simplification method of railway bridge is proposed based on the finite element shape function to improve calculation efficiency further. The sensitivity of the bogie vertical accelerations to damage is analyzed to construct the sensitivity equation of coupling system. By iteratively solving the sensitivity equation and modifying the numerical model, the bridge damage can be identified. For an exhaustive evaluation of the feasibility of the proposed method, different damage scenarios are taken into account. The results demonstrate that the proposed method has a better performance in localizing and quantifying damage than the traditional method. Moreover, the influences of operational parameters such as track irregularity and vehicle speed on the validity and robustness of method are investigated. It is found that the rougher track irregularity and the higher vehicle speed seem to be more in favor of damage identification.
