Abstract:Leather Trade House, Kings Park Road Moulton Park, Northampton NN3 lJD United Kingdom Current research has focused on complexation reactions between polyphenols and aluminum salts to delineate the structures of complexes. This information is needed to reveal the mechanisms of combination tannage of vegetable tannins and aluminum salts. Tannin-aluminum tannage is a promising alternative to currently-used toxic chrome tannage in the leather industry. Complexes of catechol and methyl gallate with aluminum salts have been synthesized, and the structures of these complexes have been assigned through 13C_ and 27 AI-NMR spectroscopy. A five-member ring structure is proposed for these complexes on the basis of NMR spectral data. This structure has been postulated for a long time but, until now, no supporting physical evidence was available.
