Abstract:We study equilibrium problem on general Riemannian manifolds, focusing on existence of solutions and the convexity properties of the solution set. Our approach consists in relating the equilibrium problem to a suitable variational inequality problem on Riemannian manifolds, and is completely different from previous ones on this topic in the literature. We apply our results to the mixed variational inequality and the Nash equilibrium problem. Moreover, we formulate and analyze the convergence of the proximal point algorithm for the equilibrium problem. In particular, correct proofs are provided for the results claimed in J. Math. Anal. Appl. 388 (2012) 61–77 (i.e., Theorems 3.5 and 4.9 there) regarding the existence of the mixed variational inequality and the domain of the resolvent for the equilibrium problem on Hadamard manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we first provide a simple variational proof of the existence of Nash equilibrium in Hilbert spaces by using optimality conditions in convex minimization and Schauder's fixed-point theorem. Then applications of convex analysis and generalized differentiation are given to the existence of Nash equilibrium and extended versions of von Neumann's minimax theorem in locally convex topological vector spaces. Our analysis in this part combines generalized differential tools of convex analysis with elements of fixed point theory revolving around Kakutani's fixed-point theorem and related issues.

Abstract:This paper generalizes the Fan-Knaster-Kuratowski-Mazurkiewicz (FKKM) lemma to the case of weak topology, and obtains the Ky Fan minimax inequality defined on non-empty non-compact convex subsets in reflexive Banach spaces, then we apply it to game theory and obtain Nash's existence theorem for non-compact strategy sets, together with John von Neumann's existence theorem in two-player zero-sum games.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new mathematical paradigm to analyze discrete-time mean-field games. It is shown that finding Nash equilibrium solutions for a general class of discrete-time mean-field games is equivalent to solving an optimization problem with bounded variables and simple convex constraints, called MF-OMO. This equivalence framework enables finding multiple (and possibly all) Nash equilibrium solutions of mean-field games by standard algorithms. For instance, projected gradient descent is shown to be capable of retrieving all possible Nash equilibrium solutions when there are finitely many of them, with proper initializations. Moreover, analyzing mean-field games with linear rewards and mean-field independent dynamics is reduced to solving a finite number of linear programs, hence solvable in finite time. This framework does not rely on the contractive and the monotone assumptions and the uniqueness of the Nash equilibrium.

Abstract:We consider the extended Newton method for approaching a Pareto optimum of a multiobjective optimization problem, establish quadratic convergence criteria, and estimate a radius of convergence ball under the assumption that the Hessians of objective functions satisfy an L-average Lipschitz condition. These convergence theorems significantly improve the corresponding ones in [J. Fliege, L. M. G. Drummond, and B. F. Svaiter, SIAM J. Optim., 20 (2009), pp. 602-626]. As applications of the obtained results, convergence theorems under the classical Lipschitz condition or the gamma-condition are presented for multiobjective optimization, and the global quadratic convergence results of the extended Newton method with Armijo/Goldstein/Wolfe line-search schemes are also provided.

Abstract:In recent and past works, convexity is usually assumed on each individual part of the action functional in order to demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium on some interval [0, T] (this meant that each hessian was assumed to be nonnegative). Particularly, a certain assumption was imposed in order to quantify the smallness of T. The contribution of this project is to expand on this with the key insight being that one does not need the convexity of each part of the action, but rather just an appropriate combination of them, which will essentially "compensate" for the other two terms to yield convexity in the action. This is meaningful in both the pure and applied settings as it generalizes the existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium slightly more, but maybe more importantly matches real world application slightly closer, as in reality there are many settings in which not each part of the action have convexity. Thus, it is more accurate for modern application of Mean Field Game Theory.

Abstract:In this paper, I prove the existence of a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium for a large class of games with nonconvex strategy spaces. Specifically, if each player's strategies form a compact, connected Euclidean neighborhood retract and if all best-response correspondences are null-homotopic, then the game has a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium. As an application, I show how this result can prove the fundamental theorem of algebra.

Abstract:The paper explores n-player multi-objective interval differential games, where the terminal payoff function and integral payoff function of players are both interval-vector-valued functions. Firstly, by leveraging the partial order relationship among interval vectors, we establish the concept of (weighted) open-loop Pareto-Nash equilibrium for multi-objective interval differential games and derive two theorems regarding the existence of such equilibria. Secondly, necessary conditions for open-loop Pareto-Nash equilibria in n-player interval differential games are derived through constructing Hamilton functions in an interval form and applying the Pontryagin maximum principle. Subsequently, sufficient conditions for their existence are provided by defining a maximization Hamilton function and utilizing its concavity. Finally, a two-player linear quadratic interval differential game is discussed along with a specific calculation method to determine its open-loop Pareto-Nash equilibrium.

Abstract:Solution methods for generalized Nash equilibrium have been dominated by variational inequalities and complementarity problems. Since these approaches fundamentally rely on the sufficiency of first-order optimality conditions for the players' decision problems, they only apply as heuristic methods when the players are modeled by nonconvex optimization problems. In contrast, this work approaches generalized Nash equilibrium using theory and methods for the global optimization of nonconvex bilevel programs. Through this perspective, we draw precise connections between generalized Nash equilibria, feasibility for bilevel programming, the Nikaido-Isoda function, and classic arguments involving Lagrangian duality and spatial price equilibrium. Significantly, this is all in a general setting without the assumption of convexity. Along the way, we introduce the idea of minimum disequilibrium as a solution concept that reduces to traditional equilibrium when equilibrium exists. The connections with bilevel programming and related semi-infinite programming permit us to adapt global optimization methods for those classes of problems, such as constraint generation or cutting plane methods, to the problem of finding a minimum disequilibrium solution. We propose a specific algorithm and show that this method can find a pure Nash equilibrium even when the players are modeled by mixed-integer programs.

Abstract:In this paper, we studied a generalized Nash equilibrium problem where the constraint conditions were limited to a certain probability. The existence of an equilibrium solution for the vector-valued optimization problem was verified using Ky Fan's inequality and Lusin's theorem, considering the conditions of lower semi-continuity and concavity. Based on the study of the variational inequality method, we proposed a new algorithm to solve the problem. Furthermore, we analyzed the convergence of the algorithm. Finally, we applied the model to examine the economic benefits of digital currency issuance, corroborating the algorithm's effectiveness with a concrete numerical example.

Abstract:This note qualifies some results in Cotrina and Flores-Bazán (2024) on the 'Finite intersection property'. We remind the essential role of this property for proving our results. In this note, we recall the statement of this property. We then specify the restrictive conditions that should be provided. An example proves the interest of this note revising some points in Cotrina and Flores-Bazán. Furthermore, it is showed that a class of generalized Nash equilibrium problems can be viewed as a particular case of a vector optimization problem, whose vector-valued function always possesses the Finite intersection property on its natural domain. Thus, the existence of a generalized Nash equilibrium will be a consequence of our Berge-type theorem and the Kakutani fixed point theorem, being it more general than those existing in recent literature, as shown by our examples.

Abstract:Many machine learning problems can be formulated as non-convex multi-player games. Due to non-convexity, it is challenging to obtain the existence condition of the global Nash equilibrium (NE) and design theoretically guaranteed algorithms. This paper studies a class of non-convex multi-player games, where players' payoff functions consist of canonical functions and quadratic operators. We leverage conjugate properties to transform the complementary problem into a variational inequality (VI) problem using a continuous pseudo-gradient mapping. We prove the existence condition of the global NE as the solution to the VI problem satisfies a duality relation. We then design an ordinary differential equation to approach the global NE with an exponential convergence rate. For practical implementation, we derive a discretized algorithm and apply it to two scenarios: multi-player games with generalized monotonicity and multi-player potential games. In the two settings, step sizes are required to be O(1/k) and O(1/√k) to yield the convergence rates of O(1/ k) and O(1/√k), respectively. Extensive experiments on robust neural network training and sensor network localization validate our theory. Our code is available at https://github.com/GuanpuChen/Global-NE.

Abstract: Wide machine learning tasks can be formulated as non-convex multi-player games, where Nash equilibrium (NE) is an acceptable solution to all players, since no one can benefit from changing its strategy unilaterally. Attributed to the non-convexity, obtaining the existence condition of global NE is challenging, let alone designing theoretically guaranteed realization algorithms. This paper takes conjugate transformation to the formulation of non-convex multi-player games, and casts the complementary problem into a variational inequality (VI) problem with a continuous pseudo-gradient mapping. We then prove the existence condition of global NE: the solution to the VI problem satisfies a duality relation. Based on this VI formulation, we design a conjugate-based ordinary differential equation (ODE) to approach global NE, which is proved to have an exponential convergence rate. To make the dynamics more implementable, we further derive a discretized algorithm. We apply our algorithm to two typical scenarios: multi-player generalized monotone game and multi-player potential game. In the two settings, we prove that the step-size setting is required to be $\mathcal{O}(1/k)$ and $\mathcal{O}(1/\sqrt k)$ to yield the convergence rates of $\mathcal{O}(1/ k)$ and $\mathcal{O}(1/\sqrt k)$, respectively. Extensive experiments in robust neural network training and sensor localization are in full agreement with our theory.
Approximating the set of Nash equilibria for convex games

Abstract:In Feinstein and Rudloff (2023), it was shown that the set of Nash equilibria for any non-cooperative $N$ player game coincides with the set of Pareto optimal points of a certain vector optimization problem with non-convex ordering cone. To avoid dealing with a non-convex ordering cone, an equivalent characterization of the set of Nash equilibria as the intersection of the Pareto optimal points of $N$ multi-objective problems (i.e.\ with the natural ordering cone) is proven. So far, algorithms to compute the exact set of Pareto optimal points of a multi-objective problem exist only for the class of linear problems, which reduces the possibility of finding the true set of Nash equilibria by those algorithms to linear games only. In this paper, we will consider the larger class of convex games. As, typically, only approximate solutions can be computed for convex vector optimization problems, we first show, in total analogy to the result above, that the set of $\epsilon$-approximate Nash equilibria can be characterized by the intersection of $\epsilon$-approximate Pareto optimal points for $N$ convex multi-objective problems. Then, we propose an algorithm based on results from vector optimization and convex projections that allows for the computation of a set that, on one hand, contains the set of all true Nash equilibria, and is, on the other hand, contained in the set of $\epsilon$-approximate Nash equilibria. In addition to the joint convexity of the cost function for each player, this algorithm works provided the players are restricted by either shared polyhedral constraints or independent convex constraints.

Abstract:We present an analysis of generalized Nash equilibrium problems in infinite-dimensional spaces with possibly non-convex objective functions of the players. Such settings arise, for instance, in games that involve nonlinear partial differential equation constraints. Due to non-convexity, we work with equilibrium concepts that build on first order optimality conditions, especially Quasi-Nash Equilibria (QNE), i.e. first-order optimality conditions for (Generalized) Nash Equilibria, and Variational Equilibria (VE), i.e. first-order optimality conditions for Normalized Nash Equilibria. We prove existence of these types of equilibria and study characterizations of them via regularized (and localized) Nikaido-Isoda merit functions. We also develop continuity and (continuous) differentiability results for these merit functions under quite weak assumptions, using a generalization of Danskin's theorem. They provide a theoretical foundation for, e.g. using globalized descent methods for computing QNE or VE.

Generalized Nash Equilibrium Problems with Mixed-Integer Variables

Abstract:We consider generalized Nash equilibrium problems (GNEPs) with non-convex strategy spaces and non-convex cost functions. This general class of games includes the important case of games with mixed-integer variables for which only a few results are known in the literature. We present a new approach to characterize equilibria via a convexification technique using the Nikaido-Isoda function. To any given instance of the GNEP, we construct a set of convexified instances and show that a feasible strategy profile is an equilibrium for the original instance if and only if it is an equilibrium for any convexified instance and the convexified cost functions coincide with the initial ones. We develop this convexification approach along three dimensions: We first show that for quasi-linear models, where a convexified instance exists in which for fixed strategies of the opponent players, the cost function of every player is linear and the respective strategy space is polyhedral, the convexification reduces the GNEP to a standard (non-linear) optimization problem. Secondly, we derive two complete characterizations of those GNEPs for which the convexification leads to a jointly constrained or a jointly convex GNEP, respectively. These characterizations require new concepts related to the interplay of the convex hull operator applied to restricted subsets of feasible strategies and may be interesting on their own. Note that this characterization is also computationally relevant as jointly convex GNEPs have been extensively studied in the literature. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of our results by presenting a numerical study regarding the computation of equilibria for three classes of GNEPs related to integral network flows and discrete market equilibria.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a theoretical math problem of game theory and calculus of variations in which we minimize a functional involving two players. A general relationship between the optimal strategies for both players is presented, followed by computer analysis as well as polynomial approximation. Nash equilibrium strategies are determined through algebraic manipulation and linear programming. Lastly, a variation of the game is also investigated.

Abstract:The fundamental theorem of game theory states that for every matrix game with finite strategies there exists at least one optimal strategy. It is known that the fundamental theorem of game theory does not hold, in general, in infinite matrix games. In this paper, we provide a characteristic of Nash equilibriums for ∞×∞ matrix games and prove an existence theorem of optimal strategies by using the Fan–KKM theorem. We give some applications of these theorems.

Abstract:We mainly study the existence, structural stability and robustness of fuzzy slightly altruistic equilibria for a class of generalized multiobjective fuzzy games which are expressed as . Firstly, we introduce the concept of fuzzy slightly altruistic equilibrium and prove the existence of equilibrium for the by Fan–Glicksberg fixed point theorem. Secondly, the connections between and bounded rationality are discussed by an abstract rationality functions. Moreover, we construct the problem space of which is represented by and show that most are structurally stable and robust to -equilibrium on the meaning of Baire category. These results are new and extend some existing results in recent literature.
