Abstract:In this paper, the authors use Ohm-Rayleigh method to obtain the general formulation of dyadic Green's function for the time harmonic current source embedded inside the unbounded biisotropic medium in terms of normalized cylindrical and elliptical cylinder vector wave functions. The singular behavior of the dyadic Green's function in the source region is investigated and taken into account by extracting the delta function singularity. Furthermore, with the help of scattering superposition principle, explicit expressions for the electric-type dyadic Green's functions are derived for source and observation points in different regions of a circular biisotropic cylinder, which is located within a medium of infinite extent made of another biisotropic material. As particular cases, the dyadic Green's functions include achiral, reciprocal and nonreciprocal chiral medium and are therefore of sufficient generality to incorporate most practical applications.
The Implementation of Multilevel Green's Function Interpolation Method for Full-Wave Electromagnetic Problems

Abstract:We extend the multilevel Green's function interpolation method (MLGFIM) developed for quasi-electrostatic problems to full-wave simulations. The difficulty in applying the interpolation approach lies in the additional rapidly changing phase term associated with the full-wave Green's functions. To enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the full-wave Green's function interpolation, a scattered point set consisting of two staggered Tartan grids in conjunction with radial basis function interpolation is employed. To further reduce the computational complexity, the QR factorization technique is applied to compress the low rank Green's function matrices. For electromagnetic scattering from PEC spheres up to a diameter of eight wavelengths, the proposed method compares well with Mie's scattering in accuracy and shows the O(NlogN) efficiency. As the method is "kernel independent", its extension to structures in layered medium is straightforward. In the numerical simulations of finite microstrip patch arrays up to 11 by 11 elements, the proposed method demonstrates very favorable dependencies of CPU time and memory storage requirement versus the number of unknowns

Abstract:In this paper, the electromagnetic scattering from conductive target with open cavity has been simplified as two (inner and outer) equivalent models by using the equivalence principle and introducing an equivalent magnetic current in the aperture of the cavity. For the inner part of the cavity, the equivalent conductance matrix has been obtained by use of connection scheme. Approximate boundary integral method has been used to describe the coupling between inner and outer parts of the cavity, and to obtain the aperture equivalent magnetic current. Finally, the general combined field integral equation was presented to form the electromagnetic model of the scattering problem, and the multilevel fast multipole algorithm was used to solve this problem efficiently. Numerical examples show good agreement between calculated results and measured data.

Abstract:In this work, numerical solution to a general electromagnetic (EM) system is studied using a formalism based on the formulas for the E–B–A– $\phi $ formulas with different gauge conditions. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to discretize these formulas. In addition, the convolutional perfectly matched layer (CPML) technique is successfully applied to absorb outgoing scattered waves described by the proposed formulas. The gauge invariance of EM fields in inhomogeneous environment is demonstrated by numerical examples. Moreover, the proposed EM framework integrated with the Schrödinger equation is introduced to investigate the mesoscopic phenomenon for light–matter interaction, which is useful to design laser pulses for controlling discrete quantum states. The work offers a simple and general numerical EM framework, which is essential to bridge the classical EM and quantum mechanical systems.

Multidiscipline Modeling in Materials and Structures

Abstract:Based on the governing equations of magneto-electro-elastic media, the general solutions in the case of distinct eigenvalues and is introduced and expressed in four harmonic functions. Then, the Green's functions for point forces, point charge and point current acting in the interior of a two-phase infinite magneto-electro-elastic plane in the case of distinct or multiple eigenvalues are given using the method of mirror image source.

Abstract:A multilevel Green's function interpolation method based on two kinds of multilevel partitioning schemes--the quasi-2D and the hybrid partitioning scheme--is proposed for analyzing electromagnetic scattering from objects comprising both conducting and dielectric parts. The problem is formulated using the surface integral equation for homogeneous dielectric and conducting bodies. A quasi-2D multilevel partitioning scheme is devised to improve the efficiency of the Green's function interpolation. In contrast to previous multilevel partitioning schemes, noncubic groups are introduced to discretize the whole EM structure in this quasi-2D multilevel partitioning scheme. Based on the detailed analysis of the dimension of the group in this partitioning scheme, a hybrid quasi-2D/3D multilevel partitioning scheme is proposed to effectively handle objects with fine local structures. Selection criteria for some key parameters relating to the interpolation technique are given. The proposed algorithm is ideal for the solution of problems involving objects such as missiles, microstrip antenna arrays, photonic bandgap structures, etc. Numerical examples are presented to show that CPU time is between O(N) and O(N log N) while the computer memory requirement is O(N).
A Novel Pseudospectral Time Domain Method for Complex EM Simulations

Abstract:A novel pseudospectral time-domain algorithm, combined with the discontinuous Galerkin method, is presented to simulate electromagnetic wave propagation in large-scale complex media. Compared with the edge-/curl-conforming-based finite element method, arbitrary high-order basis function is easily achieved by utilizing the nodal basis functions; compared with the conventional pseudospectral time-domain algorithm, this new algorithm is strictly long-time stable (>300 central periods) for non-orthogonal elements, in terms of both mathematical analysis and numerical experiments. In addition, both h- and p-adaptivity are supported by using the nonconformal-mesh-based domain decomposition method. Numerical examples include 3D full-waveform modeling of 5G electromagnetic pulse propagation in a bedroom (hundreds of wavelengths in each direction) and fully anisotropic heterogenous head-electromagnetics interaction.

Abstract:We use the 2D general solutions of orthotropic electro-magneto-thermo-elastic material to construct the 2D Green's function for a steady line heat source in the interior of two-phase orthotropic electro-magneto-thermo-elastic plane by ten newly introduced harmonic functions with undetermined constants. The corresponding coupled field can be obtained by substituting these functions into the general solution, and the undetermined constants can be obtained by the continuous conditions and equilibrium conditions. All components of coupled field are expressed in terms of elementary functions and are convenient to use.

Abstract:Green's functions play an important role in the analyses of electro-magneto-thermo-elastic composite. However, most works available on this topic are in case of identical temperature. Based on the compact 2D general solution of transversely isotropic electro-magneto-thermo-elastic composite, which is expressed in harmonic functions, and employing the trial-and-error method, the 2D Green's function for a steady point heat source in a semi-infinite electro-magneto-thermo-elastic plane is presented by five newly induced harmonic functions. Numerical results are given graphically by contours.

Abstract:A combined field integral equation (CFIE) with single operator, which is named equalized CFIE (ECFIE) is presented for solving the electromagnetic scatterings from conducting targets with cavities on which surface both the electrical and magnetic currents exist simultaneously. In ECFIE, the different integral operators imposed on unknown electric and magnetic currents are simplified to a single one by properly choosing the coefficients in conventional CFIE. As a result, the computation complexity is dramatically reduced comparing with EFIE, MFIE, and conventional CFIE. Combined with multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) and connection scheme (CS), ECFIE is used to simulate the scattering from conducting objects with cavities. The numerical examples presented in this paper demonstrate the validity and high efficiency of this approach.

Abstract:A boundary integral equation formulation is presented for the electromagnetic transmission problem where an incident electromagnetic wave is scattered from a bounded dielectric object. The formulation provides unique solutions for all wavenumbers in the closed upper half-plane belonging to argument sets for which Maxwell's equations have unique solutions. This includes the challenging combination of a real positive wavenumber in the outer region and an imaginary wavenumber inside the object. The formulation, or variants thereof, is particularly suitable for numerical field evaluations as confirmed by examples involving both smooth and nonsmooth objects.

Abstract:A general near-field thermal electromagnetic transport formalism that is independent of the size, shape and number of heat sources is derived. The formalism is based on fluctuational electrodynamics, where fluctuating currents due to thermal agitation are added to Maxwell’s curl equations, and is thus valid for heat sources in local thermodynamic equilibrium. Using a volume integral formulation, it is shown that the proposed formalism is a generalization of the classical electromagnetic scattering framework in which thermal emission is implicitly assumed to be negligible. The near-field thermal electromagnetic transport formalism is afterwards applied to a problem involving three spheres with size comparable to the wavelength, where all multipolar interactions are taken into account. Using the thermal discrete dipole approximation, it is shown that depending on the dielectric function, the presence of a third sphere slightly affects the spatial distribution of power absorbed compared to the two-sphere case. A transient analysis shows that despite a non-uniform spatial distribution of power absorbed, the sphere temperature remains spatially uniform at any instant due to the fact that the thermal resistance by conduction is much smaller than the resistance by radiation. The formalism proposed in this paper is general, and could be used as a starting point for adapting solution methods employed in traditional electromagnetic scattering problems to near-field thermal electromagnetic transport.

Generalized first-principles method to study near-field heat transfer mediated by Coulomb interaction

Abstract:We present a general microscopic first-principles method to study the Coulomb-interaction-mediated heat transfer in the near field. Using the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we derive Caroli formulas for heat transfers between materials with translational invariance. The central physical quantities are the screened Coulomb potential and the spectrum function of polarizability. Within the random phase approximation, we calculate the polarizability using the linear response density functional theory and obtain the screened Coulomb potential from a retarded Dyson equation. We show that the heat transfer mediated by the Coulomb interaction is consistent with that of the $p$-polarized evanescent waves which dominate the heat transfer in the near field. We adopt single-layer graphene as an example to calculate heat transfers between two parallel sheets separated by a vacuum gap $d$. Our results show a saturation of heat flux at the extreme near field which is different from the reported $1/d$ dependence for local response functions. The calculated heat flux is up to $5\times10^4$ times more than the black-body limit, and a $1/d^2$ dependence is shown at large separations. From the spectrum of energy current density, we infer that the near-field enhancement of heat transfer stems from electron transitions around the Fermi energy. With a uniform strain, the heat flux increases for most of the distances while a negative correlation is shown at the moderate field. Our method is valid for inhomogeneous materials in which the macroscopic response function used in conventional theory of fluctuational electrodynamics would fail at the subnanometer scale.

Continuum Electrodynamics of a Piecewise-Homogeneous Linear Medium

Abstract:The energy--momentum tensor and the tensor continuity equation serve as the conservation laws of energy, linear momentum, and angular momentum for a continuous flow. Previously, we derived equations of motion for macroscopic electromagnetic fields in a homogeneous linear dielectric medium that is draped with a gradient-index antireflection coating (J. Math Phys. 55, 042901 (2014) ). These results are consistent with the electromagnetic tensor continuity equation in the limit that reflections and the accompanying surface forces are negligible thereby satisfying the condition of an unimpeded flow in a thermodynamically closed system. Here, we take the next step and derive equations of motion for the macroscopic fields in the limiting case of a piecewise-homogeneous simple linear dielectric medium. The presence of radiation surface forces on the interface between two different homogeneous linear materials means that the energy--momentum formalism must be modified to treat separate homogeneous media in which the fields are connected by boundary conditions at the interfaces. We demonstrate the explicit separation of the total momentum into a field component and a material motion component, we derive the radiation pressure that transfers momentum from the field to the material, we derive the electromagnetic continuity equations for a piecewise homogeneous dielectric, and we provide a lucid reinterpretation of the Jones and Richards experiment.

Abstract:Electromagnetic formulations are presented that fully utilize the curvilinear geometry information available in parametric geometry codes. These parametric geometry codes (surface patch codes) are in wide use and the formulations presented can be used with any of these geometry codes Independent of the differences between versions. The ultimate goal is a three dimensional moment: method surface formulation enabling computation for bodies composed of metallic and nonmetallic portions. This goal requires that both the magnetic field integral equation operator and the electric field integral equation operator be encoded. To facilitate the presentation of the parametric geometry formulation of these operators, the simpler parametric geometry formulation for the physical optics integral is first presented. Additional background material based on two dimensional analysis is presented to address issues of faceting versus curvilinear and basis function choice.

Abstract:The Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) is a partition of unity based technique for solving electromagnetic and acoustic boundary integral equations. Past work on the GMM for electromagnetics was confined to geometries modeled by piecewise flat tessellations and suffered from spurious internal line charges. In the present article, we redesign the GMM scheme and demonstrate its ability to model scattering from PEC scatterers composed of mixtures of smooth and non-smooth geometrical features. Furthermore, we demonstrate that because the partition of unity provides function and effective geometrical continuity between patches, the GMM permits mixtures of local geometry descriptions and approximation function spaces with significantly more freedom than traditional moment methods.

Abstract:We consider the little-known anthropic argument of Fontenelle dealing with the nature of cometary orbits, given a year before the publication of Newton's Principia. This is particularly interesting in view of the rapid development of the recently resurgent theories of cometary catastrophism and their role in the modern astrobiological debates, for instance in the "rare Earth" hypothesis of Ward and Brownlee.
