Abstract:Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are crucial to high-energy-density lithium metal batteries, but they commonly suffer from slow Li transfer kinetics and low mechanical strength, severely hampering the application for all-solid-state batteries. Here, we develop a two-dimensional (2D) high-entropy lithium-ion conductor, lithium-containing transition-metal phosphorus sulfide, HE-LiMPS (Li(FeCoNiMnZn)PS) with five transition-metal atoms and lithium ions (Li) dispersed into [PS] framework layers, exhibiting high lattice distortions and a large amount of cation vacancies. Such unique features enable to efficiently accelerate the migration of Li in 2D [PS] interlamination, delivering a high ionic conductivity of 5 × 10 S cm at room temperature. Moreover, the HE-LiMPS laminate can be employed as a building block to construct an ultrathin SSE film (∼10 μm) based on strong C-S bonding between HE-LiMPS and nitrile-butadiene rubber. The SSE film delivers a strong mechanical robustness (6.0 MPa, 310% elongation) and a high ionic conductivity of 4 × 10 S cm, showing a long cycle stability of 800 h in lithium symmetric cells. Coupled with LiFePO cathode and lithium anode, the all-solid-state battery presents a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.8% within 2000 cycles at 5.0 C.

Abstract:A new solid polymer electrolyte based on poly(vinylidene fluoride)‐hexafluoropropylene, with methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) chain‐decorated MXene flakes as inorganic fillers, and succinonitrile as an additive is prepared. The batteries assembled with this solid polymer electrolyte show excellent performance and stability. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) offer inherent advantages for battery applications, such as high safety and excellent processability, but their practical use is limited by challenges like low ionic conductivity, subpar mechanical properties, and instability of the electrode/electrolyte interface. Here, novel SPEs are developed by embedding 2D MXenes decorated at the surface with methoxypolyethylene glycol chains into poly(vinylidene fluoride)‐hexafluoropropylene matrices, enhanced with succinonitrile as a plasticizer. This innovative design improves the compatibility of the modified MXene in poly(vinylidene fluoride)‐hexafluoropropylene and, together with the synergistic effects of succinonitrile, promotes the dissociation of lithium salt. The SPE achieves ionic conductivity of 1.49 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 30 °C, and a Li‐ion transference number of 0.59. These results are supported by comprehensive experimental characterization, COMSOL simulations, and DFT calculations. This SPE enables stable and reversible Li plating/stripping for over 2100 h in Li/Li symmetric cells, while fabricated Li/LiFePO4 full cells deliver a notable capacity of 135.4 mAh g−1 with an average Coulombic efficiency of 98.9% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. Furthermore, the Li/LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 full cells also demonstrate a capacity of 140.5 mAh g−1 after over 200 cycles at 0.5 C, showcasing an impressive capacity retention rate of 99.6%.

Abstract:Although solid polymer electrolytes have some intrinsic advantages in synthesis and film processing compared with inorganic solid electrolytes, low ionic conductivities and mechanical moduli hamper their practical applications in lithium‐based batteries. Here, an efficient strategy is developed to produce a unique solid polymer electrolyte containing MXene‐based mesoporous silica nanosheets with a sandwich structure, which are fabricated via controllable hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate around the surface of MXene‐Ti3C2 under the direction of cationic surfactants. Such unique nanosheets not only exhibit individual, thin, and insulated features, but also possess abundant functional groups in mesopores and on the surface, which are favorable for the formation of Lewis acid–base interactions with anions in polymer electrolytes such as poly(propylene oxide) elastomer, enabling the fast Li+ transportation at the mesoporous nanosheets/polymer interfaces. As a consequence, a solid polymer electrolyte with high ionic conductivity of 4.6 × 10−4 S cm−1, high Young's modulus of 10.5 MPa, and long‐term electrochemical stability is achieved.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is regarded as next-generation high energy density and safety battery system. The key challenge is to develop a compatible high-performance solid-state electrolyte. Herein, a two birds with one stone strategy is proposed to simultaneously enhance Li+ conductivity and polysulfide adsorptivity of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based polymer electrolyte via the integration of Nb2CTx MXene. Moreover, the sheet size of Nb2CTx MXene is crucial for the enhancement of Li+ conductivity and polysulfide adsorptivity, attributing to the difference in a specific surface area related to the percolation effect. By tuning the sheet size of Nb2CTx MXene from 500–300 nm to below 100 nm, the ionic conductivity of the PEO electrolyte is increased to 2.62 × 10−4 S·cm−1 with improved Li+ transference number of 0.37 at 60 °C. Furthermore, theoretical calculation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) conjointly prove that polysulfides could be effectively adsorbed by Nb2CTx nanosheets via forming Nb−S bonding to inhibit their shuttle in the PEO framework. As a result, the all-solid-state Li-S cell exhibits an initial capacity of 1149 mAh·g−1 at 0.5C and good cycling stability with 491 mAh·g−1 after 200 cycles. The results demonstrate the necessity of polysulfide inhibition and the application of Nb2CTx MXene in PEO-based electrolytes for all-solid-state Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Composite polymer electrolytes using polyethylene oxide (PEO) are highly appealing by virtue of the fine electrochemical stability, inexpensiveness, and easy fabrication. However, their practical application is currently hindered by the insufficient room-temperature ionic conductivity. Herein, nickel-based ultrathin metal-organic framework nanosheets (NMS) are first introduced as a novel 2D filler into the PEO matrix. The introduction of NMS with a high aspect ratio effectively improves the amorphous region proportion of PEO and thus enhances the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte by 1 order of magnitude. In addition, the Lewis acid-base interactions between the surface-coordinated unsaturated Ni atoms in NMS and the anions of lithium salt could promote the dissociation of lithium salt. Hence, the composite electrolyte with NMS achieves a high Li+ transference value of 0.378. Along with the unique nanostructure of NMS, this NMS composite electrolyte also suppresses Li dendrite growth during cycling. As a result, the assembled all-solid-state Li/LiFePO4 battery demonstrates a high reversible capacity of 130 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C and 30 °C for 50 cycles.

Abstract:All-solid-state Li metal battery has been regarded as a promising battery technology due to its high energy density based on the high capacity of lithium metal anode and high safety based on the all solid state electrolyte without inflammable solvent. However, challenges still exist mainly in the poor contact and unstable interface between electrolyte and electrodes. Herein, we demonstrate an asymmetric design of the composite polymer electrolyte with two different layers to overcome the interface issues at both the cathode and the anode side simultaneously. At the cathode side, the polypropylene carbonate layer has enough viscosity and flexibility to reduce the inter-facial resistance, while at the Li anode side, the polyethylene oxide layer modified with hexagonal boron nitride has high mechanical strength to suppress the Li dendrite growth. Owing to the synergetic effect between different components, the as-prepared double layer composite polymer electrolyte demonstrates a large electrochemical window of 5.17 V, a high ionic conductivity of 6.1 × 10-4 S/cm, and a transference number of 0.56, featuring excellent ion transport kinetics and good chemical stability. All-solid-state Li metal battery assembled with LiFePO4 cathode and Li anode delivers a high capacity of 150.9 mA h/g at 25 °C and 0.1 C-rate, showing great potential for practical applications.

Abstract:High‐Performance Polymer Electrolytes In article number 2107764, Xinran Wang, Ying Bai, Chuan Wu, and co‐workers develop a hyperbranched polyether electrolyte for solid‐state Li metal batteries. The existing ion‐solvation structures allow for fast Li+ migration (1.26 × 10−4 S cm−1, 25 °C), a wide stable voltage window (up to 4.6 V), and Li dendrite suppression, overcoming the insufficiencies encountered by polymer electrolytes. The ion‐dipole‐reinforced solid electrolyte yields sustainable Li stripping/platting and interfacial stability, thus enabling high cycle stability and capacity retention in NCM811|Li solid‐state cells.

Abstract:In all-solid-state batteries, the traditional electrode is assembled with active electrode materials, electronic conductors, and solid electrolytes. This multiple-phase structure with solid–solid contact leads to complicated interface degradations, such as electrolyte decomposition and derived mass/charge transfer obstacle. To ameliorate above issues, the less electrode components are employed, the less interface issue will emerge. Herein, such a conception is implemented by MXene, which not only provides the dual ionic–electronic transport network but also acts as a buffer layer for alleviating volume changes and homogenizing the electric field. The practicability and universality of this multifunctional MXene strategy are verified in intercalation and alloy type anodes, as well as sulfur and selenium cathodes. More excitingly, a thick electrode (∼100 μm) with a high mass loading (16.7 mg cm–2) can even be realized in a germanium/MXene electrode without obvious capacity decay upon cycling. Less MXene turns complexity into simplicity and eventually shows fascinating electrochemical performance in all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Poly(ethylene oxide)-based solid-state electrolytes are widely considered promising candidates for the next generation of lithium and sodium metal batteries. However, several challenges, including low oxidation resistance and low cation transference number, hinder poly(ethylene oxide)-based electrolytes for broad applications. To circumvent these issues, here, we propose the design, synthesis and application of a fluoropolymer, i.e., poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate). This polymer, when introduced into a poly(ethylene oxide)-based solid electrolyte, improves the electrochemical window stability and transference number. Via multiple physicochemical and theoretical characterizations, we identify the presence of tailored supramolecular bonds and peculiar morphological structures as the main factors responsible for the improved electrochemical performances. The polymeric solid electrolyte is also investigated in full lithium and sodium metal lab-scale cells. Interestingly, when tested in a single-layer pouch cell configuration in combination with a Li metal negative electrode and a LiMn 0.6 Fe 0.4 PO 4 -based positive electrode, the polymeric solid-state electrolyte enables 200 cycles at 42 mA·g −1 and 70 °C with a stable discharge capacity of approximately 2.5 mAh when an external pressure of 0.28 MPa is applied.

Synergistic effect of Ti3C2Tx MXene/PAN nanofiber and LLZTO particles on high-performance PEO-based solid electrolyte for lithium metal battery

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have been considered the most promising separators for all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) due to their ease of processing and low cost. However, the practical applications of SPEs in ASSLMBs are limited by their low ionic conductivities and mechanical strength. Herein, we developed a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected MXene (Ti3C2Tx) network and Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) particles synergistically reinforced polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based SPE, where the association of Li+ with ether-oxygen in PEO could be significantly weakened through the Lewis acid-base interactions between the electron-absorbing group (Ti-F, -O-) of Ti3C2Tx and Li+. Besides, the TFSI- in lithium salts could be immobilized by hydrogen bonds from the Ti-OH of Ti3C2Tx. The 3D interconnected Ti3C2Tx network not only alleviated the agglomeration of inorganic fillers (LLZTO), but also improved the mechanical strength of composite solid electrolyte (CSE). Consequently, the assembled Li||CSE||Li symmetric battery showed excellent cycling stability at 35 ℃ (stable cycling over 3000 h at 0.1 mA cm-2, 0.1 mAh cm-2) and -2 ℃ (stable cycling over 2500 h at 0.05 mA cm-2, 0.05 mAh cm-2). Impressively, the LiFePO4||CSE||Li battery showed a high discharge capacity of 145.3 mAh/g at 0.3 C after 300 cycles at 35 ℃. This rational structural design provided a new strategy for the preparation of high-performance solid-state electrolytes for lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) with in-built inorganic fillers are very promising for building safe solid-state batteries, owing to their excellent flexibility, prominent interfacial wettability and low costs. However, the morphology and surface state of inorganic fillers greatly affect ionic conductivity of SPEs. Here, we report that ultraviolet (UV) initiates in situ cross-linking of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (MPEGA), poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and montmorillonite (MMT) between cathodes and anodes of cell, to produce a solid composite electrolyte (CMP/MMT) that is composed of a robust interpenetrating polymer network matrix and layered MMT nanosheets. Surprisingly, the CMP/MMT delivers a high room-temperature ionic conductivity (similar to 1.06 mS cm(-1)), large lithium-ions transference number (t(Li+) = 0.79). The large ionic conductivity enhancement is ascribed to the local electric field effect of montmorillonite (MMT), which accelerates the lithium-ions fast transport in the interlayer of the MMT nanosheets. In addition, the density functional theory (DFT) is conducted to demonstrate the mechanism of improving ionic conductivity. As a result, a solid-state battery with CMP/MMT demonstrates a high capacity of similar to 140 mAh g(-1) and excellent capacity retention of >98% at 0.3 C after 400 cycling.

Abstract:Solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) possess conspicuous merits of facile manufacturing, superior mechanical toughness, and favorable chemical stability with Li anodes, but the intrinsically low room temperature ionic conductivity (~10 −8 −10 −6 S cm −1 ) and negligible Lithium-ion transfer number (0.1~0.2) badly inhibited its commercial application in lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, we design the three-dimensionally and coaxially MXene-confined solid-state polymer electrolyte (C-MX SPE) for the directional acceleration movement of Li + ion by introducing MXene nanosheets into the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber. Benefiting from the confinement effect, the homogeneously and coaxially MXene-confined SPE possess an impressive Li + ion transference number of 0.72 and ionic conductivity of 3.07×10 −3 S cm −1 at room temperature, which are 3 and 20 times of magnitude higher than the randomly MXene-dispersed (R-MX) SPE (0.22 and 1.61×10 −4 S cm −1 ), respectively. Also, the Lithium/SPE/Lithium symmetric cell exhibits a flat galvanostatic charge/discharge under 1 mA cm −2 for 2000 h without dendrites, revealing its 3D skeleton structure could mechanically suppress Li dendrite growth. Based on it, the assembled flexible solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) possess a rate-capability of 101 mAh g −1 @ 10 C, a capacity retention of 85.18% after 500 cycles @1 C at room temperature and a stability of bending-needling-cutting performance. Evidently, this three-dimensionally and coaxially MXene-confined SPE may represent a promising strategy to address the random distribution and agglomeration of inorganic fillers in SPE and guide a direction for the development of high-performance, secure, and flexible SSLMBs.

Abstract:Abstract Electrochemical cells based on alkali metal anodes are receiving intensive scientific interest as potentially transformative technology platforms for electrical energy storage. Chemical, morphological, mechanical and hydrodynamic instabilities at the metal anode produce uneven metal electrodeposition and poor anode reversibility, which, are among the many known challenges that limit progress. Here, we report that solid-state electrolytes based on crosslinked polymer networks can address all of these challenges in cells based on lithium metal anodes. By means of transport and electrochemical analyses, we show that manipulating thermodynamic interactions between polymer segments covalently anchored in the network and “free” segments belonging to an oligomeric electrolyte hosted in the network pores, one can facilely create hybrid electrolytes that simultaneously exhibit liquid-like barriers to ion transport and solid-like resistance to morphological and hydrodynamic instability.

Abstract:Metal organic framework (MOF)-polymer composite solid electrolyte membrane with novel microstructure is expected to show attractive prospect for solid state lithium metal batteries. But the reported MOF were usually regarded as an entirety in composite solid electrolyte resulting in tradeoff between ionic conductivity and lithium dendrite inhibition ability. Herein, MOF-polymer composite membrane with vertically aligned channels and ultrathin MOF layer is proposed to decrease lithium ion transportation resistance obtained by simple phase inversion and in situ coordinated growth methods. The vertically aligned highways can decrease tortuous pathways and intensify ion conduction. The embedded ultrathin MOF layer on membrane surface leads to homogeneous plating/stripping of lithium. This novel structured MOF-polymer composite solid electrolyte exhibits improved ionic conductivity of 0.55 mS cm-1 at 22 degrees C and lithium ion transference number of 0.87. Furthermore, the Li/Li symmetrical cell shows stable lithium plating/stripping performance for 1100 h at 0.1 mA cm-2 and 0.1 mA h cm-2. LiFePO4/MOF-polymer/Li coin battery demonstrates good rate capability and cycling performance with capacity retention of 82 % after 100 cycles at 0.2C and the pouch cell can light up the "DLUT" blue light lamp under folding and cutting states. This work encourages a new avenue to develop composite solid electrolytes with ion transportation highways and uniform distribution plane for solid lithium metal batteries.

Enhanced Ionic Conductivity and Interface Stability of Hybrid Solid-State Polymer Electrolyte for Rechargeable Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Compared to conventional organic liquid electrolyte, solid-state polymer electrolytes are extensively considered as an alternative candidate for next generation high-energy batteries because of their high safety, non-leakage and electrochemical stability with the metallic lithium (Li) anode. However, solid-state polymer electrolytes generally show low ionic conductivity and high interfacial impedance to electrodes. Here we report a hybrid solid-state electrolyte, presenting an ultra-high ionic conductivity of 3.27 mS cm(-1) at room temperature, a wide electrochemical stability window of 4.9 V, and non-flammability. This electrolyte consists of a polymer blend matrix (polyethylene oxide and poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)), Li+ conductive ceramic filler (Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)(3)) and a solvate ionic liquid (LiFSI in tetra ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, 1:1 in molar ratio) as plasticizer. The introduction of the solvate ionic liquid to the solid-state electrolyte not only improves its ionic conductivity but also remarkably enhances the stability of the interface with Li anode. When applied in Li metal batteries, a Li vertical bar Li symmetric cell can operate stably over 800 h with a minimal polarization of 25 mV and a full Li vertical bar LiFePO4 cell delivers a high specific capacity of 158 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at room temperature.

Abstract:The solid‐state electrolytes are keys to achieve high energy, safety and stability for lithium ion batteries. In this review, core indicators of solid polymer electrolytes are discussed in detail including ionic conductivity, interface compatibility, mechanical integrity and cycling stability. Besides, we have also summarized how above properties can be improved by the design strategy of functional monomers, groups and assembly of batteries. Structures and properties of polymers are investigated here to provide a basis for all‐solid‐state electrolyte design strategies of multi‐component polymers. Meanwhile, adjustment strategies of quasi‐solid‐state polymer electrolytes such as adding functional additives and carrying out structural design have also been investigated, aiming at solving problems caused by simply adding liquids or small molecular plasticizer. We hope that fresh and established researchers can achieve a general perspective of solid polymer electrolytes via this review, and spur more extensive interests for exploration of high‐performance lithium ion batteries.

Sio2-Decorated-Montmorillonite Reinforced Poly(1,3-Dioxolane) As a Multifunctional Solid Electrolyte for High-Performance Lithium Batteries

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have garnered considerable attention owing to their remarkable flexibility, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness. However, SPEs are hampered by critical limitations such as inadequate ionic conductivity at room temperature and issues related to lithium-ion migration, which curtail their practical applications. To tackle these challenges, the incorporation of inorganic additives into SPEs is considered as an effective strategy. Montmorillonite (MMT), a typical two-dimensional material, has emerged as an advanced filler for SPEs, displaying increased ionic conductivity, lithium-ion transference, and electrochemical stability. Herein, siliconized-modified montmorillonite (SiO2-MMT) nanosheets are synthesized and incorporated into poly(1,3-dioxolane) (PDOL)-based SPEs, resulting in a multifunctional composite solid electrolyte (CSE). The CSE shows an ionic conductivity as high as 5.58 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 30 degrees C, with a lithium-ion transference number close to 0.58. Symmetrical Li||Li cells utilizing the CSE exhibits stable performance for over 1200 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm(-2). Additionally, the CSE contributes to the stability of electrolytes, facilitates superior Li+ mobility and uniform deposition, thereby forming a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI). Density functional theory (DFT) simulation confirms that SiO2-MMT, containing a large number of adsorption sites, facilitated fast reaction kinetics and effective anchoring of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). As a result, the composite electrolyte is cycled in Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries at 200 mA g(-1) and 30 degrees C for 250 cycles, achieving a high coulombic efficiency (CE > 99.4 %) and a capacity decay rate of 0.15 %. Additionally, when paired with high-voltage Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1)O-2 (NCM811) cathodes and LiFePO4 (LFP) cathodes, both display excellent electrochemical performance. This research presents a highly promising approach for constructing multifunctional solid electrolytes for high-performance lithium batteries.
Two-dimensional Sandwich-Like MXene–conductive Polymer Nanocomposite with In-Plane Cylindrical Mesopores for Long Cycling Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Li-S batteries have received much attention due to their high energy density, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, the poor conductivity of sulfur and the 'shuttle effect' of polysulfides still impede their practical applications. In this study, thin layered MXene nanosheets sandwiched by conductive poly(m-phenylenediamine) with in-plane cylindrical mesochannels (mPmPD/MXene) are constructed as sulfur hosts for the cathode materials of Li-S batteries. The polar active sites on MXene and mesoporous conductive PmPD polymers synergistically alleviate the polysulfide shuttling through chemisorption and physical confinement; the high metallic conductivity of MXene and conductive PmPD ensure the transport of electrons and promote the redox kinetics; the in-plane cylindrical mesochannels on mPmPD/MXene provide hosting space for high sulfur loading (similar to 71 wt%) and facilitate smooth electrolyte transport in the internal space of the cathode. Profiting from these advantages, the Li-S battery based on the mPmPD/MXene cathode exhibits a capacity decay of 0.0593% after 800 cycles at 1 C (53% capacity retention). The optimized battery shows stable cycling performance even at high sulfur loading (6.8 mg cm(-2)) with 5.6 mAh cm(-2) capacity remained after 60 cycles at 0.1 C. This study provides insights for the rational design of 2D heterostructures with in-plane mesochannels for high-performance Li-S batteries.
Nb2CTx MXene boosting PEO polymer electrolyte for all-solid-state Li-S batteries: two birds with one stone strategy to enhance Li+ conductivity and polysulfide adsorptivity

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is regarded as next-generation high energy density and safety battery system. The key challenge is to develop a compatible high-performance solid-state electrolyte. Herein, a two birds with one stone strategy is proposed to simultaneously enhance Li+ conductivity and polysulfide adsorptivity of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based polymer electrolyte via the integration of Nb2CTx MXene. Moreover, the sheet size of Nb2CTx MXene is crucial for the enhancement of Li+ conductivity and polysulfide adsorptivity, attributing to the difference in a specific surface area related to the percolation effect. By tuning the sheet size of Nb2CTx MXene from 500–300 nm to below 100 nm, the ionic conductivity of the PEO electrolyte is increased to 2.62 × 10−4 S·cm−1 with improved Li+ transference number of 0.37 at 60 °C. Furthermore, theoretical calculation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) conjointly prove that polysulfides could be effectively adsorbed by Nb2CTx nanosheets via forming Nb−S bonding to inhibit their shuttle in the PEO framework. As a result, the all-solid-state Li-S cell exhibits an initial capacity of 1149 mAh·g−1 at 0.5C and good cycling stability with 491 mAh·g−1 after 200 cycles. The results demonstrate the necessity of polysulfide inhibition and the application of Nb2CTx MXene in PEO-based electrolytes for all-solid-state Li-S batteries.Graphic Abstract
