Abstract:To investigate the seasonal characteristics of submicron aerosol (PM1) in Beijing urban areas, a high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol-mass-spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) was utilized at an urban site in summer (August to September 2011) and winter (November to December 2010), coupled with multiple state of the art online instruments. The average mass concentrations of PM1 (60-84 mu gm(-3)) and its chemical compositions in different campaigns of Beijing were relatively consistent in recent years. In summer, the daily variations of PM1 mass concentrations were stable and repeatable. Eighty-two percent of the PM1 mass concentration on average was composed of secondary species, where 62% is secondary inorganic aerosol and 20% secondary organic aerosol (SOA). In winter, PM1 mass concentrations changed dramatically because of the different meteorological conditions. The high average fraction (58%) of primary species in PM1 including primary organic aerosol (POA), black carbon, and chloride indicates primary emissions usually played a more important role in the winter. However, aqueous chemistry resulting in efficient secondary formation during occasional periods with high relative humidity may also contribute substantially to haze in winter. Results of past OA source apportionment studies in Beijing show 45-67% of OA in summer and 22-50% of OA in winter can be composed of SOA. Based on the source apportionment results, we found 45% POA in winter and 61% POA in summer are from nonfossil sources, contributed by cooking OA in both seasons and biomass burning OA (BBOA) in winter. Cooking OA, accounting for 13-24% of OA, is an important nonfossil carbon source in all years of Beijing and should not be neglected. The fossil sources of POA include hydrocarbon-like OA from vehicle emissions in both seasons and coal combustion OA (CCOA) in winter. The CCOA and BBOA were the two main contributors (57% of OA) for the highest OA concentrations (>100 mu gm(-3)) in winter. The POA/CO ratios in winter and summer are 11 and 16 mu gm(-3)ppm(-1), respectively, similar to ratios from western cities. Higher OOA/O-x (=NO2+O-3) ratio (0.49 mu gm(-3)ppb(-1)) in winter study than these ratios from western cities (0.03-0.16 mu gm(-3)ppb(-1)) was observed, which may be due to the aqueous reaction or extra SOA formation contributed by semivolatile organic compounds from various primary sources (e.g., BBOA or CCOA) in Beijing. The evolution of oxygen to carbon ratio (O/C) with photochemical age allows to estimate an equivalent rate constant for chemical aging of OA in summer as k(OH)similar to 4.1x10(-12)cm(3)molecule(-1)s(-1), which is of the same order as obtained in other anthropogenic influenced areas and may be useful for OA modeling.

Abstract:The oxidation state of organic aerosol (OA) substantially influences the optical and hygroscopic properties, toxicity, and atmospheric lifetime of OA. Comprehensive field measurements have been carried out in Beijing to understand the possible mechanism relevant to the evolution of OA oxidation state in the ambient atmosphere. We found that OA was more oxidized in pollution events in autumn than in winter, evidenced by the higher ratios of OA/OC (2.50 +/- 0.69) and f(44)/f(43) (1.90 +/- 0.54) in autumn than the corresponding values (1.80 +/- 0.39 and 1.64 +/- 0.45) in winter. Plumes with highly oxidized OA were identified to be transported from the southern regions of Beijing and strongly correlated with the high concentration of aerosol water content (AWC), which was dominantly affected by the high concentration of ammonium nitrate and the high RH. This suggests that aqueous-phase chemistry, as regulated by ammonium nitrate and RH, plays a crucial role in the formation of highly oxidized OA in Beijing.
Tracing the Formation of Secondary Aerosols Influenced by Solar Radiation and Relative Humidity in Suburban Environment

Abstract:Secondary particulate matter exerts adverse effects on air quality and human health. The production or reaction rate of secondary aerosols in polluted environments remains uncertain and is complicated by diverse emissions and meteorological conditions. By concurrently measuring the mass spectra of compounds in both particulate (using an aerosol mass spectrometer) and gas phases (using proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry) in suburban Beijing, we linked the secondary organic aerosol (OA) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to photochemical age (t(age)) and obtained their reaction or production rates. Factorization analysis of the mass spectra of OA and the 108 VOC species resolved three oxygenated OAs (OOA) and three secondary VOC factors at different oxidation levels. Primary organic aerosols and VOCs from traffic sources were determined to be important sources for secondary aerosol formation. At high pollution levels under the conditions of weaker solar radiation and higher relative humidity, moderately oxygenated OA (O/C = 0.61) and secondary inorganics were coproduced in combination with rapid consumption of all VOCs. At lower pollution levels, the intense solar radiation caused substantial and rapid production of OOA (O/C = 0.81) and intermediate VOCs (both in a high oxidation state) at a rate of 15.0% h(-1) and 14.0% h(-1), respectively. These results highlight the feedback effects between radiation and moisture in terms of altering the formation mechanism of secondary aerosols. In particular, highly oxygenated secondary airborne products under strong radiation should be considered in regard to their environmental impact.

Abstract:Abstract. A severe regional haze problem in the megacity Beijing and surrounding areas, caused by fast formation and growth of fine particles, has attracted much attention in recent years. In order to investigate the secondary formation and aging process of urban aerosols, four intensive campaigns were conducted in four seasons between March 2012 and March 2013 at an urban site in Beijing (116.31° E, 37.99° N). An Aerodyne high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometry (HR-ToF-AMS) was deployed to measure non-refractory chemical components of submicron particulate matter (NR-PM1). The average mass concentrations of PM1 (NR-PM1+black carbon) were 45.1 ± 45.8, 37.5 ± 31.0, 41.3 ± 42.7, and 81.7 ± 72.4 μg m−3 in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. Organic aerosol (OA) was the most abundant component in PM1, accounting for 31, 33, 44, and 36 % seasonally, and secondary inorganic aerosol (SNA, sum of sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium) accounted for 59, 57, 43, and 55 % of PM1 correspondingly. Based on the application of positive matrix factorization (PMF), the sources of OA were obtained, including the primary ones of hydrocarbon-like (HOA), cooking (COA), biomass burning OA (BBOA) and coal combustion OA (CCOA), and secondary component oxygenated OA (OOA). OOA, which can be split into more-oxidized (MO-OOA) and less-oxidized OOA (LO-OOA), accounted for 49, 69, 47, and 50 % in four seasons, respectively. Totally, the fraction of secondary components (OOA+SNA) contributed about 60–80 % to PM1, suggesting that secondary formation played an important role in the PM pollution in Beijing, and primary sources were also non-negligible. The evolution process of OA in different seasons was investigated with multiple metrics and tools. The average carbon oxidation states and other metrics show that the oxidation state of OA was the highest in summer, probably due to both strong photochemical and aqueous-phase oxidations. It was indicated by the good correlations (r = 0.53–0.75, p < 0.01) between LO-OOA and odd oxygen (Ox = O3 + NO2), and between MO-OOA and liquid water content in aerosols. BBOA was resolved in spring and autumn, influenced by agricultural biomass burning (e.g., field preparation burnings, straw burning after the harvest). CCOA was only identified in winter due to domestic heating. These results signified that the comprehensive management for biomass burning and coal combustion emissions is needed. High concentrations of chemical components in PM1 in Beijing, especially in winter or in adverse meteorological conditions, suggest that further strengthening the regional emission control of primary particulate and precursors of secondary species is expected.

Abstract:Winter has the worst air pollution of the year in the megacity of Beijing. Despite extensive winter studies in recent years, our knowledge of the sources, formation mechanisms and evolution of aerosol particles is not complete. Here we have a comprehensive characterization of the sources, variations and processes of submicron aerosols that were measured by an Aerodyne high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer from 17 December 2013 to 17 January 2014 along with offline filter analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Our results suggest that submicron aerosols composition was generally similar across the winter of different years and was mainly composed of organics (60 %), sulfate (15 %) and nitrate (11 %). Positive matrix factorization of high-and unit-mass resolution spectra identified four primary organic aerosol (POA) factors from traffic, cooking, biomass burning (BBOA) and coal combustion (CCOA) emissions as well as two secondary OA (SOA) factors. POA dominated OA, on average accounting for 56 %, with CCOA being the largest contributor (20 %). Both CCOA and BBOA showed distinct polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) spectral signatures, indicating that PAHs in winter were mainly from coal combustion (66 %) and biomass burning emissions (18 %). BBOA was highly correlated with levoglucosan, a tracer compound for biomass burning (r(2) = 0.93), and made a considerable contribution to OA in winter (9 %). An aqueous-phase-processed SOA (aq-OOA) that was strongly correlated with particle liquid water content, sulfate and S-containing ions (e.g. CH2SO2+) was identified. On average aq-OOA contributed 12% to the total OA and played a dominant role in increasing oxidation degrees of OA at high RH levels (>50 %). Our results illustrate that aqueous-phase processing can enhance SOA production and oxidation states of OA as well in winter. Further episode analyses highlighted the significant impacts of meteorological parameters on aerosol composition, size distributions, oxidation states of OA and evolutionary processes of secondary aerosols.

Abstract:Over 300 daily PM2.5 filter samples were collected in two western Chinese megacities, Xi'an and Chongqing, from October 2019 to May 2020. Their aqueous extracts were nebulized simultaneously to an aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) and a recently developed extractive electrospray ionization (EESI) mass spectrometer, for bulk and near-molecular organic aerosol (OA) composition, respectively. Carbonate was quantified using EESI and a total organic carbon analyzer to separate inorganic carbon from dust. Via isotopically-labelled internal standards and positive matrix factorization, seven water-soluble sources were quantified separately using the AMS- and EESI-based analyses, with consistent types, concentrations, and correlations. These include dust, solid fuel combustion (SFC)-related, nitrogen- (and sulfur-) containing, summer/winter oxygenated OAs, and a cigarette-related OA only in EESI. When accounting for water-solubility, SFC-related OAs were the largest (53%) sources in Chongqing, while dust (consisting of 77% OA and 23% carbonates) was the largest (30%) source in Xi'an. Overall, this study presents one of the first times that complementary mass spectrometric techniques independently resolved consistent OA sources-with added chemical information-over multiple seasons and locations of complex pollution. The methods and quantified sources are essential for subsequent chemical, modelling, and health studies, and policy making for air pollution mitigation.

Abstract:The understanding at a molecular level of ambient secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation is hampered by poorly constrained formation mechanisms and insufficient analytical methods. Especially in developing countries, SOA related haze is a great concern due to its significant effects on climate and human health. We present simultaneous measurements of gas-phase volatile organic compounds (VOCs), oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs), and particle-phase SOA in Beijing. We show that condensation of the measured OOMs explains 26-39% of the organic aerosol mass growth, with the contribution of OOMs to SOA enhanced during severe haze episodes. Our novel results provide a quantitative molecular connection from anthropogenic emissions to condensable organic oxidation product vapors, their concentration in particle-phase SOA, and ultimately to haze formation.

Abstract:We present the characterization of the non-refractory submicron aerosol (NR-PM1) in urban Shanghai during winter 2017 by applying an Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM). The results showed that the NR-PM1 in winter in Shanghai was dominated by organics (OA) (43%), followed by nitrate (29%), sulfate (18%), ammonium (7%) and chloride (3%). Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was used to analyze the obtained data, and three types of emission sources of OA were identified and classified as HOA, LO-OOA and MO-OOA. They accounted for 32%, 22% and 46% of OA respectively. The strong increase of sulfate in high-RH pollution episodes indicated that aqueous-phase oxidation of SO2 could be an important formation process for sulfate during particulate air pollution period. The contribution of nitrate was elevated from 25% during clean episodes to 32% during polluted episodes, likely owing to the increase of RH which facilitates the gas-to-particle partitioning of hydrophilic NH4NO3 and the hydrolysis of N2O5. Further analysis of atmospheric formation relevance suggested that the formation of LO-OOA was mainly driven by aqueous-phase chemistry reactions, whereas photochemical oxidation became an important process for MO-OOA formation. Meanwhile, atmospheric oxidative tracer (Ox) may also affect LO-OOA formation, owing to LO-OOA exhibited a distinct peak at noon in high pollution episodes.

Abstract:Samples of PM2.5, PM10, and TSP from 2001 to 2003 have been collected in Beijing during spring (low-dust), spring (high dust), summer and winter. The concentration of TSP, PM10, and PM2.5 was most abundant in spring with high dust followed by winter, spring with little dust and summer. The average mass ratios of PM>10, PM2.5–10 and PM2.5 to TSP show that the large coarse fraction (PM>10) and the fine fraction (PM2.5) contribute most in spring with high dust while PM2.5, PM2.5–10, and PM>10 contributed similar fractions to TSP in summer and PM2.5 in winter.

Abstract:In order to clarify the influence of primary emission and secondary formation on the organic compositions of fine aerosols during the atmospheric pollution process in summer in Beijing, an intensive field measurement were carried out at an urban site in Beijing from July 1 to July 30, 2017. Inorganic ions (SO42-, NO3-, and NH4+) and organic compounds (OM) were the most important components of PM2.5 throughout the whole sampling period, with inorganic ions having the highest concentrations during the polluted period and OM having the highest concentration during the clean period. The apportioned quantitatively primary and secondary sources accounted for an average 86 ± 12% of the measured organic carbon (OC) at the urban site, based on positive matrix factorization modeling and the tracer-based method. Coal combustion was an important primary source for OC in the polluted episode, and biomass burning was the main contributor during the clean period. β-Caryophyllene SOC (secondary OC) was the main secondary contributor for OC during summertime in Beijing. The significant amount of SOC enhanced with an increased ozone and acidification indicated that the atmospheric oxidants and the in-situ acidity of particles were important factors in the formation of SOC during period of high pollution in Beijing.

Abstract:Abstract Emissions caused by the use of coal and by traffic have caused serious photochemical smog and aerosol pollution with unique characteristics in most Chinese cities. This report gives an overview of aerosol concentrations in China based on data obtained from both the literature and recent research by the authors. The results show that TSP (total suspended particulate) and PM-10 (particles with aerodynamic diameter 10 µm) concentrations frequently exceed the National Ambient Air Quality Standard and that ambient aerosol concentrations constitute a serious air pollution problem. PM-2.5 concentrations are also high and account for 60 % of the PM-10 mass. Organic carbon and sulfate are the most abundant components of PM-2.5, while crustal elements represent a minor portion.Nitrate concentrations are almost the same as sulfate in summertime, which implies that NOx control is very important in lowering fine particle concentrations and in improving air visibility. The chemical mass balance (CMB) method was applied in Beijing to identify the sources of PM-2.5. The main sources include fugitive dust, coal burning/industrial processes, traffic emissions, and secondary aerosol produced by atmospheric chemical conversion.
Real-Time Characterization of Aerosol Particle Composition above the Urban Canopy in Beijing: Insights into the Interactions between the Atmospheric Boundary Layer and Aerosol Chemistry

Abstract:Despite extensive efforts into the characterization of air pollution during the past decade, real-time characterization of aerosol particle composition above the urban canopy in the megacity Beijing has never been performed to date. Here we conducted the first simultaneous real-time measurements of aerosol composition at two different heights at the same location in urban Beijing from December 19, 2013 to January 2, 2014. The nonrefractory submicron aerosol (NR-PM1) species were measured in situ by a high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer at near-ground level and an aerosol chemical speciation monitor at 260 m on a 325 m meteorological tower in Beijing. Secondary aerosol showed similar temporal variations between ground level and 260 m, whereas much weaker correlations were found for the primary aerosol. The diurnal evolution of the ratios and correlations of aerosol species between 260 m and the ground level further illustrated a complex interaction between vertical mixing processes and local source emissions on aerosol chemistry in the atmospheric boundary layer. As a result, the aerosol compositions at the two heights were substantially different. Organic aerosol (OA), mainly composed of primary OA (62%), at the ground level showed a higher contribution to NR-PM1 (65%) than at 260 m (54%), whereas a higher concentration and contribution (15%) of nitrate was observed at 260 m, probably due to the favorable gas-particle partitioning under lower temperature conditions. In addition, two different boundary layer structures were observed, each interacting differently with the evolution processes of aerosol chemistry.

Abstract:Organic aerosols, a major constituent of fine particulate mass in megacities, can be directly emitted or formed from secondary processing of biogenic and anthropogenic volatile organic compound emissions. The complexity of volatile organic compound emission sources, speciation and oxidation pathways leads to uncertainties in the key sources and chemistry leading to formation of organic aerosol in urban areas. Historically, online measurements of organic aerosol composition have been unable to resolve specific markers of volatile organic compound oxidation, while offline analysis of markers focus on a small proportion of organic aerosol and lack the time resolution to carry out detailed statistical analysis required to study the dynamic changes in aerosol sources and chemistry. Here we use data collected as part of the joint UK-China Air Pollution and Human Health (APHH-Beijing) collaboration during a field campaign in urban Beijing in the summer of 2017 alongside laboratory measurements of secondary organic aerosol from oxidation of key aromatic precursors (1,3,5-trimethyl benzene, 1,2,4-trimethyl benzene, propyl benzene, isopropyl benzene and 1-methyl naphthalene) to study the anthropogenic and biogenic contributions to organic aerosol. For the first time in Beijing, this study applies positive matrix factorisation to online measurements of organic aerosol composition from a time-of-flight iodide chemical ionisation mass spectrometer fitted with a filter inlet for gases and aerosols (FIGAERO-ToF-I-CIMS). This approach identifies the real-time variations in sources and oxidation processes influencing aerosol composition at a near-molecular level. We identify eight factors with distinct temporal variability, highlighting episodic differences in OA composition attributed to regional influences and in situ formation. These have average carbon numbers ranging from C5-C9 and can be associated with oxidation of anthropogenic aromatic hydrocarbons alongside biogenic emissions of isoprene, α-pinene and sesquiterpenes.

Abstract:China experienced severe haze pollution in the past decades. However, systematic characterization of atmospheric fine particles with advanced measurement techniques has been very scarce in Shanghai, which is the largest megacity in China. Herein, we present the characterization of non-refractory submicron aerosol (NR-PM1) in urban Shanghai during winter 2017 by applying an Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM, Aerodyne Research Inc.). The NR-PM1 is predominated by organics (43%), followed by nitrate (29%), sulfate (18%), ammonium (7%), and chloride (3%). Regarding the organic aerosol (OA) factors, three organic aerosol factors were identified and classified as hydrocarbon-like organic aerosol (HOA), less-oxygenated organic aerosol (LO-OOA), and more-oxygenated organic aerosol (MO-OOA), which contributed 32%, 22%, and 46% to total organic aerosol respectively. The NR-PM1 composition exhibited an increase in secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) (sulfate, nitrate and ammonium) contribution from clean episodes (49%) to pollution episodes (59%), while organic aerosol contribution decreased accordingly from 48% to 39%. The strong increase of sulfate in high-relative humidity (RH) pollution episodes indicated that aqueous-phase oxidation of SO2 could be an important formation process for sulfate during particulate air pollution period. The contribution of nitrate was elevated from 25% during clean episodes to 32% during polluted episodes, likely owing to the increase of relative humidity which facilitates the hydrolysis of N2O5 and the gas-to-particle partitioning of hydrophilic NH4NO3 and. Further analysis of atmospheric formation relevance suggested that less-oxygenated organic aerosol formation was mainly driven by aqueous-phase chemistry reactions, whereas photochemical oxidation became an important process for more-oxygenated organic aerosol formation. Meanwhile, less-oxygenated organic aerosol formation may also be influenced by atmospheric oxidative tracer (i.e., O- x ), as less-oxygenated organic aerosol exhibited a distinct peak at noon under high-relative humidity condition.
Molecular characterization of oxidized organic nitrogen in the polluted urban atmosphere of Beijing

Abstract:Oxidized organic nitrogen (OON) serves as a crucial link between volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides, ozone, and secondary organic aerosol (SOA). However, the comprehension of the molecular composition, formation mechanism, and implications of OON remains limited, particularly in urban environments influenced heavily by anthropogenic emissions. This study presents the field measurements of OON conducted at an urban site in Beijing using chemical ionization mass spectrometry with nitrate as the reagent ion. The molecular characteristics, dominant species, and oxidation states of OON were investigated. Positive matrix factorization analysis disentangled the diverse OON into factors characterized by unique fingerprint features and formation pathways. A modified workflow was used to classify the majority of OON as terpene (3.0 %), isoprene (15.2 %), aliphatic (38.1 %, containing dinitrate), and aromatic (36.0 %, containing aromatic ring retaining) OON. This highlights the significant impact of anthropogenic sources and underscores the need for stringent controls on anthropogenic VOC emissions to mitigate OON formation. Volatility estimates further indicate that aromatic and aliphatic OON, with relatively low volatility, are expected to be the primary contributors to SOA formation by condensation or gas-particle partitioning in urban Beijing. In addition, hazy weather conditions may facilitate multi-generation reactions, leading to the production of large amounts of semi-volatile dinitrate OON and promoting its conversion to SOA.

Abstract:Abstract The oxidative potential (OP) of ambient particulate matter (PM) is a common metric for estimating PM toxicity and linking PM exposure to adverse health effects. Organic aerosol (OA), a dominant fraction of ambient PM worldwide, may significantly contribute to PM toxicity. Here, we investigated the source‐based OA components contributing to the OP of PM in the urban (Beijing, summer and winter) and rural (Gucheng, winter) environments of the North China Plain (NCP). Various OA components as identified by the aerosol mass spectrometer/aerosol chemical speciation monitor (AMS/ACSM), transition metals, and black carbon were compared with the OP of PM measured by dithiothreitol assays. The results consistently demonstrate the importance of OA as a contributor to PM's OP in both urban and rural NCP environments. Higher intrinsic OP was observed in winter Beijing than in summer, possibly due to OA being predominantly from anthropogenic sources in winter. Furthermore, different OA components were found to drive the response of OP in the two environments. More‐oxidized oxygenated OA (MO‐OOA), cooking OA, and oxidized primary OA (during winter) are the OA contributors to OP in the urban environment, with a dominant contribution from MO‐OOA. In contrast, biomass burning OA (BBOA) and OOA play a major role in the OP in the rural environment, with BBOA making the largest contribution. Overall, this work highlights the significance of OA in determining PM's OP and calls for more work to reveal the sources and characteristics of OA components contributing to OP across different regions.

Abstract:Ambient aerosol samples were collected at an urban site and an upwind rural site of Beijing during the CAREBEIJING-2008 (Campaigns of Air quality REsearch in BEIJING and surrounding region) summer field campaign. Contributions of primary particles and secondary organic aerosols (SOA) were estimated by chemical mass balance (CMB) modeling and tracer-yield method. The apportioned primary and secondary sources explain 73.8% +/- 9.7% and 79.6% +/- 10.1% of the measured OC at the urban and rural sites, respectively. Secondary organic carbon (SOC) contributes to 32.5 +/- 15.9% of the organic carbon (OC) at the urban site, with 17.4 7.6% from toluene, 9.7 +/- 5.4% from isoprene, 5.1 +/- 2.0% from alpha-pinene, and 2.3 +/- 1.7% from beta-caryophyllene. At the rural site, the secondary sources are responsible for 38.4 +/- 14.4% of the OC, with the contributions of 17.3 +/- 6.9%, 13.9 9.1%, 5.6 1.9%, and 1.7 1.0% from toluene, isoprene, alpha-pinene, and beta-caryophyllene, respectively. Compared with other regions in the world, SOA in Beijing is less aged, but the concentrations are much higher; between the sites, SOA is more aged and affected by regional transport at the urban site. The high SOA loading in Beijing is probably attributed to the high regional SOC background (similar to 2 mu g m(-3)). The toluene SOC concentration is high and comparable at the two sites, implying that some anthropogenic components, at least toluene SOA, are widespread in Beijing and represents a major factor in affecting the regional air quality. The aerosol gaseous precursor concentrations and temperature correlate well with SOA, both affecting SOA formation. The significant SOA enhancement with increasing water uptake and acidification indicates that the aqueous-phase reactions are largely responsible SOA formation in Beijing.

Abstract:Abstract. Volatility plays a key role in affecting mass concentrations and the lifetime of aerosol particles in the atmosphere, yet our knowledge of aerosol volatility in relatively polluted environment, e.g., north China, remains poor. Here aerosol volatility in Beijing in summer 2017 and 2018 was measured using a thermodenuder (TD) coupled with an Aerodyne high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) and a soot particle AMS. Our results showed overall similar thermograms for most non-refractory aerosol species compared with those reported in previous studies. However, high mass fraction remaining and NO+/NO2+ ratio for chloride and nitrate, each above 200 ∘C, indicated the presence of considerable metallic salts and organic nitrates in Beijing. The volatility distributions of organic aerosol (OA) and four OA factors that were resolved from positive matrix factorization were estimated using a mass transfer model. The ambient OA comprised mainly semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs; 63 %) with an average effective saturation concentration (C*) of 0.55 μg m−3, suggesting overall more volatile properties than OA in megacities of Europe and the US. Further analysis showed that the freshly oxidized secondary OA was the most volatile OA factor (SVOC = 70 %) followed by hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA). In contrast, the volatility of more oxidized oxygenated OA (MO-OOA) was comparable to that of cooking OA with SVOC on average accounting for 60.2 %. We also compared the volatility of ambient and black-carbon-containing OA. Our results showed that the BC-containing primary OA (POA) was much more volatile than ambient POA (C*=0.69 μg m−3 vs. 0.37 μg m−3), while the BC-containing SOA was much less volatile, highlighting the very different composition and properties between BC-containing and ambient aerosol particles.

Abstract:Haze in Beijing is linked to atmospherically formed secondary organic aerosol, which has been shown to be particularly harmful to human health. However, the sources and formation pathways of these secondary aerosols remain largely unknown, hindering effective pollution mitigation. Here we have quantified the sources of organic aerosol via direct near-molecular observations in central Beijing. In winter, organic aerosol pollution arises mainly from fresh solid-fuel emissions and secondary organic aerosols originating from both solid-fuel combustion and aqueous processes, probably involving multiphase chemistry with aromatic compounds. The most severe haze is linked to secondary organic aerosols originating from solid-fuel combustion, transported from the Beijing-Tianjing-Hebei Plain and rural mountainous areas west of Beijing. In summer, the increased fraction of secondary organic aerosol is dominated by aromatic emissions from the Xi'an-Shanghai-Beijing region, while the contribution of biogenic emissions remains relatively small. Overall, we identify the main sources of secondary organic aerosol affecting Beijing, which clearly extend beyond the local emissions in Beijing. Our results suggest that targeting key organic precursor emission sectors regionally may be needed to effectively mitigate organic aerosol pollution.

Abstract:To improve air quality, the Beijing government has employed several air pollution control measures since the 2008 Olympics. In order to investigate organic aerosol sources after the implementation of these measures, ambient fine particulate matter was collected at a regional site in Changping (CP) and an urban site at the Peking University Atmosphere Environment Monitoring Station (PKUERS) during the Photochemical Smog in China field campaign in summer 2016. Chemical mass balance (CMB) modeling and the tracer yield method were used to apportion primary and secondary organic sources. Our results showed that the particle concentration decreased significantly during the last few years. The apportioned primary and secondary sources explained 62.8 ± 18.3 and 80.9 ± 27.2 % of the measured OC at CP and PKUERS, respectively. Vehicular emissions served as the dominant source. Except for gasoline engine emissions, the contributions of all the other primary sources decreased. In addition, the anthropogenic SOC, i.e., toluene SOC, also decreased, implying that deducting primary emissions can reduce anthropogenic SOA. In contrast to the SOA from other regions in the world where biogenic SOA was dominant, anthropogenic SOA was the major contributor to SOA, implying that deducting anthropogenic VOC emissions is an efficient way to reduce SOA in Beijing. Back-trajectory cluster analysis results showed that high mass concentrations of OC were observed when the air mass was from the south. However, the contributions of different primary organic sources were similar, suggesting regional particle pollution. The ozone concentration and temperature correlated well with the SOA concentration. Different correlations between day and night samples suggested different SOA formation pathways. Significant enhancement of SOA with increasing particle water content and acidity was observed in our study, suggesting that aqueous-phase acid-catalyzed reactions may be the important SOA formation mechanism in summer in Beijing.
